My name is Sam, and my wife Amanda and I spent a long time searching for a venue that felt elegant but still warm and personal--and the Manor delivered on every level. From the very beginning, the experience was seamless. The staff was incredibly organized, responsive, and genuinely invested in making our day special. Planning a wedding can feel overwhelming, but they guided us through every step with patience and clarity. No question felt too small, and no request felt like a burden. That kind of support made a huge difference for us. The venue itself is stunning. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and the manor has this timeless, classic charm that makes everything feel elevated without being stuffy. Our ceremony was held outdoors, and even in early April, the setting felt magical. The landscaping created the perfect backdrop for photos--honestly, we barely had to "pose" because every angle looked incredible. Inside, the reception space was just as impressive. The room felt spacious but still intimate, and everything flowed perfectly--from cocktail hour to dinner to dancing. The staff coordinated everything so smoothly that Amanda and I were actually able to relax and enjoy the night instead of worrying about logistics. One thing that really stood out was the food. We had heard good things beforehand, but it exceeded expectations. Our guests are still talking about it weeks later. From the cocktail hour selections to the main courses, everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. They were also very accommodating with dietary needs, which was important to us. If I could give one piece of advice to future brides and grooms, it would be this: trust the team at Old Tappan Manor. They know exactly what they're doing. We came in with a vision, but they elevated it in ways we didn't even think of. Let them guide you--it will take so much stress off your shoulders. Also, take time on the day to really soak it in. The setting, the atmosphere, the way everything comes together--it goes by quickly, but it's unforgettable. Amanda and I both had moments where we just looked around and thought, "This is perfect," and that's something we'll carry with us forever. We truly couldn't have asked for a better place to start our marriage. If you're considering Old Tappan Manor, don't hesitate. It's not just a beautiful venue--it's a team that cares deeply about making your day everything it should be. --Sam & Amanda

He was very communicative--even with the 13 hour time difference, I was able to coordinate with him easily. I had my husband be taken out of the house three hours before the party to set up... the balloon arch was delivered right on time. The photographer showed up half an hour earlier than the party. The magician I wanted to hire was booked somewhere else and I only found out a few days before, but the balloon sculpture artist Mark recommended instead was an absolute hit with the kids as well as the adults, which was a pleasant surprise. He made my husband the most outrageous birthday hat. Right when he was supposed to be done, one of the kids tripped and popped his balloons and got upset, and he stayed longer to make him (and a few other stragglers) more balloons. Truly kind. The photographer David was also really so helpful, friendly, and on it! He came early and helped with some of the set up... he was attentive and also very nice to talk to. Very natural (sometimes it's awkward when a photographer's in your face taking pictures but it wasn't awkward at all). We got a USB full of pictures right after the party! Wisely recognized as America's oldest tavern with its stone facade, the Old '76 House, located on Main Street in Tappan, has been welcoming guests and was restored to its pristine condition by the Norden family. Step inside, and nearly every corner tells a story that served as a meeting place for local patriots during the American Revolutionary War. It also welcomed General George Washington for dining on occasion. He once received plans at the establishment that exposed Benedict Arnold as a traitor--prompting a dramatic reaction still talked about today. Upon entering without a reservation today for lunch, my partner and I were greeted by the host and got a cozy table by the fireplace with original Delft tiles in the Tap Room. The interior features rustic beamed ceilings, four fireplaces, vintage portraits, historical certificates and documents, as well as costumes and artifacts where patrons were able to walk around and marvel at them. The menu reflects the tavern's heritage, with dishes inspired by early American cuisine. We decided on the Thanksgiving Sandwich accompanied with fries and the Traditional American Meatloaf over Mashed Potatoes and Steamed Vegetables. For dessert, we shared Hannah's Apple Crunch with vanilla ice cream. But even more than the great and delicious food was the history, ambiance, and especially the way we were treated. Our server was Joe and checked on us often. The portion was healthy and the price comparable to the area's. If one has even a passing interest in American history, then it's a must to come here. Not just a meal, but an experience!

How much does one know about the history of the Revolutionary War in the Hudson Valley?…read more Like a well-written mystery novel, the Hudson Valley unfolds its secrets, luring history buffs for good reason. The American Revolution played out along the Hudson's banks--from the first riots protesting the British Quartering Act on Golden Hill in Lower Manhattan to the chaining of the Hudson and Benedict Arnold's attempted betrayal of West Point in the Highlands. Just north of the New Jersey border, Tappan, derived from a Lenape Indian word thought to mean "cold water," has the oldest surviving building in Rockland County. The DeWint House, owned by Patriot Johannes DeWint, holds a special place in American history as it served as a temporary headquarters for George Washington during the American Revolution. Washington was a guest of the house twice in 1780 and twice in 1783. It was here that Washington signed the death warrant of British Major John Andre, a spy who conspired with American General Benedict Arnold to betray West Point. Upon arrival as first-timers yesterday, my partner and I were the only vehicle in the spacious parking lot. The house built using brick and indigenous stone is a prime example of Hudson Valley Dutch Colonial architecture, showcasing the unique blend of Dutch and American styles that were prevalent during the colonial period. The house's bottom floor (the top floor is off-limits) houses the North and South Rooms. The South Room was where Washington and his staff resided. The North Room was where work was done, especially with regard to the trial and execution of Andre. The rooms are both open to the public for viewing through glass partitions. Period furniture, bedding, and desks are among the items one sees. An adjacent 19th-century carriage house contains displays of artifacts uncovered at the site during archaeological digs. A 15-minute video about the historic site can be seen, and an over 150-year-old grandfather clock keeps the correct time. So much history happened in this spot that changed this country forever. Don't miss it.

Aquila's gives a 30-minute grace period, which helped since the area gets very dark at night and the roads are narrow. I knew ahead of time there would be a lobster food truck and a live salsa band. When you arrive, you check in with the hostess, though there's no clear hostess stand since she's stationed at the end of the bar. The inside was crowded with no available seats, but we weren't there for the band anyway. Our igloo had a heater, but two would've been ideal. They recommend bringing a blanket, which I forgot, but it wasn't too cold--around the high 40s. We tried the "Sweet Wine Flight," which included Sparkling Rosé, Moscato, and white and red wine slushies. The white wine slushy was my favorite. It started raining while we were there, and everyone with fire pits cleared out, so I was extra glad we chose an igloo. They offered a cheese box, but it looked too small, so we stuck to drinks. Our server was polite and brought everything out quickly. Reservations give you two hours, and we had a great time. I like the variety of reservation options they offer. For suggestions: it would be nice to have a real charcuterie board instead of tiny cheese and veggie boxes. The indoor space could also be larger, especially for people coming for the live band, and there are no seats around the bar. Overall, though, it's a cozy spot, and I enjoyed the experience.

So many 5-star reviews convinced me this was the place to try. With Fink's BBQ now closed for good…read morein Suffern, I've been aching for a local Rockland joint with solid BBQ to visit time and time again. I admit that my disappointment may be weighing on my rating, but let me get this out of the way: Country music? Sure. It's BBQ. That's standard. But having Fox News on both downstairs TV? A very poor precedent to play politics in the area that guests first walk into. Most restaurants with TVs will play sports. Upstairs, they at least were showing Food Network, and that is also fine. Politics is an immediate 1.5 star deduction, and I noticed 13 stars on the menu that indicated this is a recurring theme, not just an error by the waitstaff. I'll also note the waitstaff... well, the one girl who greeted us as first was not the best. She had very little to say, so I asked about upstairs vs. downstairs and she said we could pick. We picked upstairs to get away from the door and the politics, and while that was nice, after bringing us water and taking our order she immediately disappeared and was never seen again. My appetizer came out with the main course, water wasn't going to be refilled unless I shouted down the stairs... very poor start. Fortunately, this was made up by the nice guy (24 years old I think?) who served our food and tended to us the rest of the night. Maybe he could sense the peeve. Maybe he fired her on the spot and took over. But he was very personable, visited frequently to see how we were doing and what we needed, chatted up quite a bit about the food and the restaurant and himself. Great guy, so service is a "push". Other than the music, the ambiance is... interesting. Upstairs is nice and cozy, and there are two sets of stairs leading up to it, one behind the other. Strange. They're both open stairs, but they look totally different. I asked about that, and the nice guy said that the upstairs actually spans two neighboring businesses. Which doesn't quite explain the double staircase but was still interesting to hear about. There are also catered events up there, since this place is first and foremost a catering establishment. He showed us the catering menu, and it's quite a bit more expansive than the regular menu. But no desserts on them, except for special times like Thanksgiving and Christmas, since the owner gets exhausted baking desserts (I'm told). And with all that, we get to the food... First, I tried the sauces. Only two options, neither has heat. Their standard sauce is the darker, redder of the two, tomato based NY-style. The lighter (orange from the outside) is their custom sauce that is apparently Carolina themed with mustard included. I would not call it Southern, as it is rather over-sugared for Carolina BBQ. Second, the wait for the meals was so long, I almost left. It was at least 30 minutes and we were the only ones in the restaurant. Any good BBQ place is doing enough business to have meat at the ready and dishes to prepare and send out. I can finally report that once the food did arrive, it was very good overall. The quesadilla was a little imbalanced - parts were too much cheese and not enough meat. My corn souffle appetizer was delicious, but not Southern in how it came across - too dense and squishy. Southern style is a little softer and puffier. My ribs were tasty but not fall-off-the-bone tender. They were cooked neither low nor slow enough, which makes me think they were not left cooking overnight but rather partially cooked (at best) and completed when I ordered. Which is not right for BBQ. As far as the sides, cole slaw was nothing special. The homemade dill pickles that came with the quesadilla are actually really good! I'm not a dill guy normally. Finally, the potato salad was interesting. Not sure if that counts as a hit or a miss, as the bacon was too crunchy (I can't believe I'm hating on bacon) and the texture threw off the overall impression. Because the waiter who took over was so nice, I ordered dessert. The whipped cream pie is really good, I just wish it wasn't so small for the money, but homemade has its cost and I respect that. Order the $30 pie while it's on the Thanksgiving catering menu! In the end, I'm balancing a lot. Food that would get at least 4 stars by itself, and could be higher with a repeat visit. Both 5 star service and 1 star service. 4 star atmosphere upstairs, 1 star downstairs. That's fifteen stars total, divided by five numbers, so I hereby award 3 stars and will continue to look for a Fink's replacement I can truly enjoy.
