Love going to the Reading Market and exploring all the restaurants and shops they have to offer. I have walked by this food counter more times than I care to count always saying I will stop by and check it out. On my last visit to Philly I did just that... and can I say WOW !!! Definitely a five star sandwich all the way. Got a BLT Turkey Wrap, ended up splitting it as it was large and packed with meat. The Original Turkey is a Thanksgiving lover's dream!! On a recent visit to Philly, I was told I just HAD to stop by and get a plate. I ordered the turkey platter with three sides (I chose stuffing, corn, and mashed potatoes) and cranberry sauce. I also opted for gravy, because you can't have Thanksgiving without gravy! The food was absolutely delicious. The turkey was very juicy and tender, the corn was seasoned well, the mashed potatoes were creamy, and the stuffing was rich and comforting. The stall was also extremely clean and orderly! I'm not sure if it's because I'm from deeper down in the south and Philly is just different, but I didn't find the staff very friendly. They weren't rude to me by any means, but I got no smiles or conversation and mostly blank stares between asking what I wanted and telling me how much my order was. Getting through the Reading Terminal Market is a very specific experience and not for the faint of heart. I entered through a side door that already had a line out the door, due to a rib restaurant right inside, but after navigating through the crowd and every other line crowd within the market, finally found myself at the open seating section. There was no place to sit, so we did what many others were doing and watched those seated closely. The minute any group indicated they might be leaving, the table vultures (myself included) descended on them to see who could claim the table first. After a few foiled attempts on my part, I finally scored a table for 4, after which my party and I all agreed to tag team heading out on the floor for food. I was not in the first search and acquire mission and so had some time to plan what I was going to go for once it was my turn...and then I spotted...The Original Turkey counter RIGHT across the way. Many may not understand my love of turkey dinner. I love everything about it; the potatoes, the stuffing, the other sides, the gravy AND the cranberry sauce! Once I spotted The Original Turkey, there was no going back. The food is amazing and one of the only places I can enjoy the comfort food of Thanksgiving all year round! GO ELSEWHERE!!! I should've checked the lowest Google reviews beforehand but now I know! Apparently rudeness, bland food and even food poisoning are "a thing" here. Check the reviews and do a walkby to see for yourself... I came here with my son as we were looking for some good homestyle grub for lunch. We were there around 11:30am today (Saturday) but the place was not particularly busy. The customer in front of us asked for a sample of the Mac and Cheese so her daughter could taste it. The server quickly obliged and grabbed a small sample/condiment cup and dipped out some Mac and gave them a fork to eat it with. When it was our turn at the counter I asked the same lady if we could try a sample of the stuffing (which was honestly the main thing we were looking forward to and had driven in from NJ to try)...Would you believe.... she didn't say a word or acknowledge us at all and grabbed THE LID of one of the sample/condiment cups and dipped out a small taste of stuffing onto this thin plastic lid... I guess she thought I was going to eat the sample directly off the lid, but instead I asked for a fork which she went to get with the most stank attitude and grumpy expression on her face (imagine the seahag from the old Popeye's cartoons for a visual).. The customer who had been ahead of us even reacted with surprise looking at what we got vs what she got... As I looked at the other employees behind the counter they all gave off a vibe of either being annoyed, angry or both. Now regarding the stuffing... It was as bland and flavorless as could be. I had been ordering our turkey dinner from here since 2013. They recently started vacuum wrapping (in heavy plastic) the turkey which was also cut into a few large pieces as opposed to smaller, easier to eat pieces. If you are a great Dane though, they're just the right size. This info was not disclose when I ordered. And if you are trying to ward off a vampire or have in-laws you wish would go elsewhere, be sure to converse with them after having OT's mashed potatoes, which are probably 80 percent garlic and little mashed potatoes. I came here on a busy Saturday and while most people are getting orders form DiNic's, I was recommended to try The Original Turkey. They are known for their cranberry turkey sandwich. I ordered this and it did NOT disappoint. It was basically thanksgiving in a sandwich. It contained soft, tender, and most cuts of thick turkey meat, as well as a generous portion of gravy and cranberry sauce. I asked the gentlemen behind the counter if they sold just the turkey by the pound, as their menu is made up of turkey sandwiches, bowls, salads, etc - and he gave me a resounding yes. So I order a 1/2 a pound of turkey... no wait... I stop him... 3/4 of a pound. He expertly carves up 3/4 lb of a turkey, put it in a little black tray and passes it onto the cashier. I think I paid something like 8-10 dollars for it. It was D-FREAKIN-LICIOUS. I can imagine this turkey on anyone of their sandwiches is just awesome. But me... I just ate it with a fork. I went to my car... ate about half. Then I went over and parked under the Love Park where there was an xmas market... and polished off the other half. Totally happy, totally satiated. I mean...
