But what I remember most of all is the food, particularly ducking into a little shop off a piazza somewhere to grab whatever I could buy and eat while we walked to our next sightseeing destination--a pastry, a slice of pizza, or a sandwich. At Alveo, I almost feel like I'm right back there. The restaurant is small and lively, not a place to linger exactly but a place where you can tell you'll be taken care of. Just as many patrons are ordering to go as they are to stay. And the sandwiches? Good enough to power many, many steps of sightseeing across cobblestones, or just get you through the afternoon at your home or office in Cincinnati. They've absolutely nailed the ingredients on every sandwich I've tried, with high-quality components selected specifically for how they go together. (Like those little sandwich shops in Europe, there are no substitutions here--unless you'd like gluten free bread.) The bread? Unreal how it can hold these constructions together while being soft and delicious. The meats? Perfection. The cheese? Incredible. That pistachio stuff? I see it in my dreams. The one area where Alveo definitely deviates from its European brethren is portion size--these sandwiches are huge! They come in a paper wrapper, inside a to-go box, and believe me, you will probably need it. Each time I've been to Alveo I've ended up eating about half the sandwich for lunch and the rest for dinner, maybe with a snack in between, and felt perfectly satisfied for the day. So, yes, the $20+ price tag might discourage you, but don't let it. It's a $20 investment in a very, very delicious day.

I stopped by for a quick lunch during the week and wanted an easy to-go sandwich. They have a medium sized menu but a lot of different options which makes it a bit hard to pick haha! I decided on a reuben sandwich with all of the fixens inside. I was surprised that I was the only one in there because of the amount of rave reviews. It was a small quaint little place. The employees were suppperrrr nice and gave me a lot of time to think about my order. The vibes in there were very cool with fun music and just overall a good time. Now onto the Reuben. Holy cow! It was juicy and very flavorful, with the perfect amount of sauerkraut. The bread was toasty and the sandwich was nice and warm but not too hot. I think this will be a new spot for me for lunch!

Essentially for me I had waited too long to eat and the idea of waiting longer was a non starter for me. Sandwiches are not my go to food outside the house, it seems silly on some level. However, the sandwich I had was fantastic and well balanced. There was a good amount of everything without it being too much. Sometimes it's too much. This was great. They also had good, homemade or freshly made sides like potato salad and other salads you could get. It was great.

I have heard good things about their muffins. Choices make this spot ideal for breakfast or lunch. Chewy on the outside, bagels give way to a light and fluffy inside. Even days later, they maintain this consistency, when reheated, in a toaster oven. The mix on the everything bagels is well distributed, and does not all fall off when being cut. Everything bagels are made with choice of plain or wheat bagel base. Wheat are a little more dense. Not only are the plain fluffier, but the flavor of the toppings is more pronounced. One of my children loves the pretzel bagels. It is more on the dense side, yet still soft. The sourdough bagels are light and airy. They get a thicker crust than the other bagels. These are great for sandwiches. The pumpernickel work well for sandwiches as well. Cheese bagels are cheese and garlic. We have yet to try their sweet bagels. Even late morning or early afternoon, on a weekday, they are busy. The parking lot fills up. Many people seem to be getting their orders to-go. As such, a parking spot opens up quickly. There seems to be an adequate number of tables. The staff has a bit of that short, to the point, stereotypical, Big Apple attitude. Staff is quick and efficient. The line moves quickly. Orders may be placed via their app. Catering is also available.
