This place is a godsend for late night eats! I'm a semi professional dancer so iykyk, us dancers always be eating dinner at weird time. I usually try to eat before rehearsals but tonight was not my night. I was starving and craving something substantial. I didn't want joe's pizza or 7th street burger because thats not a healthy habit to start. So I was very happy when I passed this food truck. I got the oxtail with coconut rice. The portions are huge and I appreciate that the oxtail was so tender and had a good meat to fat ratio. All the hot girls know that eating collagen is the key to plump skin, so run don't walk to this food truck! read more

The service was great and typical food truck, lots of places on the sidewalk to sit and enjoy or take back to your office. Stumbled upon this gem on a random weekday afternoon and had the best meal! My brother and I ordered a large oxtail bowl to share since I wasn't too hungry but the super nice man insisted we also needed to try their 2nd best seller which is the jerk chicken so he very kindly hooked us up with a small bowl as well! I was recently on a business trip to Brooklyn. It was a really quick trip, fly in from Florida, quick meeting, bite to eat, overnight in the city and back to the airport. Everything went fine except my decision to eat at the Original Caribbean King. I got the chicken curry bowl which came with rice and peas. It was a good size portion, but the food was definitely not freshly made and looked like it had been sitting for a while. The curry had a weird flavor and didn't seem authentic, plus the rice had crisp pieces in it like it was reheated too long. In my rush to eat and be on my way, I unfortunately overlooked these issues. Big mistake. As I went back to the hotel a few hours later, I got a pretty notable stomach ache and had wound up in the bathroom for a big part of the night. Clearly something was wrong with the food. After a rough night and a precarious trip to CVS to get meds, I started to feel a bit better. But wow what a night. If I had to fly home immediately after eating at Caribbean King I would have had a major problem. Luckily I got to recuperate a bit overnight. Overall 1 star. My oh my, what an experience! I say, probably the best HALAL Caribbean food food truck I have ever come across. Out of the hundreds of food trucks I came across today at the Halal Food Festival in Nassau County, Caribbean king definitely won. The lines were jammed packed with hungry foodies and I was lucky enough to wait 30 minutes for their jerk chicken. However, they did run out of the oxtail but the jerk chicken and the scotch bonnet sauce? Was to DIEEEEE for. My platter came with plantains, rice and three meaty pieces of jerk chicken. Definitely a 10/10! Such friendly workers that volunteered to be a part of this festival which was vital FYI ! and I have to say that I was impressed by how great of a quality their food was. The dish was heaping; good portion of chicken breast, side of cabbage salad, lettuce with tomatoes, pickles, jalapeños, and red onions, and fried plantains. The plantains has a nice putter crunch. The meal comes with a small packet of balsamic salad dressing. The chicken curry is spicy and not for those who can't tolerate heat! Unfortunately, the meat was extremely dry. For the price point, I would have much rather ordered from a different food truck. UPDATE: A full refund was issued with an apology for the quality of their food. I saw this Caribbean food truck parked outside of Whole Foods Market in Williamsburg on Saturday late afternoon and decided to walk over to see the menu. I was immediately greeted by the friendly worked and I asked him for his recommendation. He said for sure the jerk chicken bowl was his favorite. I'm kinda picky sometimes with my meats....I don't always like too much fat on my dark meat chicken. I asked him if the dark meat jerk chicken was on the leaner or fattier side . He said "hang on" and came back with a large sample for me to try of the dark meat jerk chicken and the rice and peas. So kind of them and they gave me such a generous portion! The jerk chicken meat was delicious, tender and juicy with an amazing jerk sauce that covered the rice. I decided to order the bowl for $15 which comes with a large portion of chicken, rice and peas, and some veggies like seasoned cabbage and scallions along with some perfectly cook plantains. This food truck in Williamsburg is incredible, and I'm so glad I stumbled upon it on a random Saturday. For $10, we got a bowl with chicken curry that came with two sides (steamed cabbage & white coconut rice). The owner was also super friendly and since it was our first time he gave us an extra plantains and a drink on the house. Highlights, curry is very flavorful, not too spicy. Chicken was a white meat so it was slightly drier, but the coconut rice paired with the sauce was sublime. Plantains were incredibly delicious as well and weren't too greasy. Also, did I mention the portions here are INSANEly HUGE. You will definitely be full for just a cheap $10. I'm noticing the critical reviews are saying the food isn't authentic. I am not a fair judge for authenticity since I am not from the Caribbean. I think from a value, flavor, customer friendliness, and portion perspective, this place is going to be hard to beat (To the owner, thank you for being so nice to us today!). Don't get me wrong this oxtail bowl wasn't bad. In fact I'd give it a solid 7.7/10. The sauce was rich, you can tell it was steeped in flavor for a good time, and the meat was tender. I was just displeased with the low quantity and lack of quality in every other aspect: coconut rice had mushy texture and wasn't cooked properly (maybe intentional to soak up the sauce better and be more like a porridge but no not my thing) and this was $20 for a portion that skimps out on meat and tried to fill you up on mediocre beans and even worse rice. read more

I don't take pleasure in giving negative reviews and hammering in the nail on negative points about an establishment, but unfortunately, there is not much that is Caribbean about the Caribbean King food truck. I might not be from the Caribbean, but I've been to many Caribbean restaurants and food trucks (Sunrise Grill, Veronica's and R Retha's when they were still operating) and the flavors here just didn't add up. I had seen the Caribbean King food truck in the past in the FiDi area, but it's rare when they do drop by and park their truck at Old Slip by Hanover Square. At first, I wanted to go to my favorite Caribbean cart, Veronica's, but I decided to give Caribbean King a try because I didn't know when they would be back. I already had a feeling something was off when I took at the menu and saw that their sides were limited. I have no problem with them serving jerk chicken, curry chicken, fried chicken, curry goat and coconut shrimp as some of the meat selections, but I had never seen sweet potato fries and french fries as Caribbean sides. Also, there really wasn't much to choose from overall from the sides. The meats didn't give me much to work with either. Anyhow, I went with what I thought would be the best selections, jerk chicken with a side of rice and beans, sweet plantains and cole slaw. Basically, I regretted almost all of my selections, but I'm not sure if there was anything else that I would have wanted. Maybe the curry chicken? The flavors were just off on everything. The jerk chicken was bland, wasn't very tasty and didn't have those Caribbean spice flavors. I knew it was a bad sign when one of the employees squirted BBQ sauce onto it like it was a chicken and rice dish. When did it become OK to put BBQ sauce on jerk chicken? If I had known they were going to put BBQ sauce, I would have said no because it just didn't go well together. I found it to be a turn off. The jerk chicken should have been good on its own. The rice and beans were dry as well and not great. The sweet plantains were anything but sweet. They seemed to be overcooked and dry. There were only 3 pieces, but I had a hard time eating 1. The cole slaw might have been the dish's saving grace. The scoop I received was huge, but it wasn't like it was spectacular. It was solid and the most edible out of anything in the plate. I know the food truck business is tough, but sometimes bad food needs to be called out and I can only hope that a review like this will motivate them to shake things up. Usually in Manhattan along lower 6th avenue, was surprised to see this food truck parked in Williamsburg on a Saturday afternoon. Not many people in line so was able to order and get food fairly quickly. Decided on the Jerk Chicken Tacos w/Rice and Peas ($10) and a side of Sweet Plantains ($4). Tacos are three to an order - super flavorful jerky meat mixed with a tangy sauce. Maat is definitely tender; would have preferred a spicier sauce/marinade. Rice and beans are basic, so best to mix in with the tacos. Plantains are about 8 to an order - the softer ones of the bunch packed a lot of flavor while the bigger ones are more hardy. Definitely value for your money here as I was full 3/4ths of the way in. Seems like this truck is here often, so a nice stopover if drinking around in the neighborhood. read more

Based on their old photos and their reviews, I suspect their food has gone through a few iterations, and this latest one is really quite delicious. I notice most of their critical reviews are from folks who are completely incensed that the food is not authentically Caribbean because the menu contains ingredients like jerk tofu. To that I say, are the flavors good? I think so! Most dishes throughout history, of any culture, had to have been conceptualized at some point, and often borrow from other culture's cuisine. Cuisines tend to evolve over time, and I really can't speak to the "authenticity" of this food truck's dishes, but my late night coconut shrimp bowl made me say 'wow!' many times over. All bowls come with 2 generous sides, and I picked rice & peas and plantains. The bowl traveled really well through transit and the plantains maintained their crispy edges even an hour after I received my bowl. The shrimp was perfectly breaded and crispy, with a fragrant coconut coating that paired well with the rice & peas. The portion was enormous and I was able to eat my bowl spread out over two meals. For $12, this is great value! I want to poo poo the naysayers, but I also didn't try any of the jerked meats, which seem to be the main offender in most people's reviews. It's possible their kitchen has implemented feedback and stepped things up because the meal I had was delicious, and my partner loved the jerk chicken taco and plantains they ordered too. read more

Coworker and I tried this food truck after finding the ceviche truck missing from the usual lineup. To keep it simple, here are my impressions starting with the positives: Pros: -The portion size is generous for the price (for NYC) and you get 3 sides in a bowl for $12-$14 -This is a good option for people who have bland palates and can't tolerate spice. - food came out quickly (3 minutes?) -salad side is more than just your usual iceberg and a couple tomato slices. I got the shrimp meal and I must say The rice and peas is terrible! It's salty and for some reason there is an overpowering taste of something else that I can't put my finger on. Im so glad I found this cart, the best part is that it's halal! They're located at 49th and 6th ave on Wednesdays, check their instagram for their locations throughout the week! At first I couldn't find the cart so I called their number and he helped me out. Anyway lets get to the food now! I ordered the jerk chicken bowl, with green salad, rice and beans and seasoned fries.
