We rented road bikes to ride from Carpinteria to Ventura about 35 miles round trip. Skip, the owner, sized us with the correct bikes, made sure we knew how to use the gears, included all the equipment to make repairs. Called this bike shop to ask if they could check our new electric bikes that we purchased, they came 85% assembled professionally from RadCity Bikes. We assembled the rest, which followed assembly video. We have ridden the bikes and both work perfectly. All we needed was the pedals greased and tightened, the rest just confirmed tightened professionally. Not only was the guy (assuming owner) rude, but wanted to charge $160.00 per bike! After 35 years of bike racing I find the best bike mechanic ever--in sleepy little Carpinteria? Who would have thought that possible? I hesitated going there at first because they're in such a tiny shop and stopped by the local "bike shop." The ridiculous pricing, attitude and poor work I experienced there soured me and I took all my repair work to Santa Barbara. Then, one day, someone told me that Jim, the owner, was a fantastic bike mechanic. I gave him a try...and will never have anyone else touch my bike as long as we live in Carpinteria. There's more. The pricing is more than fair. A friend had been told by the earlier mentioned Carp shop that the problem with her bike would cost over a hundred dollars to fix. She asked me to look at her bike and I recommended she take it to Bikesmiths. Her bike got fixed, runs great, and she was charged $10.00. A small part was all she needed. You cannot go wrong going here. This is only the second review I've ever written on Yelp, and it is without question the most heartfelt I will ever write. read more

I decided not to order some parts online and support a local shop instead. This place is awesome. They have a little of everything... beach cruisers, mountain bikes, even bikes for those dreaded Santa Barbara riders who don't understand what a bike lane is giving us all a bad name (or understand the physics behind force = mass x acceleration both of which come in huge supply from an automobile). I spotted some 60's style seats and handle grips, even a cool book on the history of Bianchi. Skip, the owner, was great! I was in and out of the shop within a few minutes and the price was about what I'd pay online. Yes, Jim is the best bicycle mechanic I have ever run across. I have driven over from L.A. to have Jim work on my bikes. He is one of the few bike mechanics who knows how to repair the old 3-speed Sturmey-Archer English bikes of the sixties and is able to do repairs on older bikes that other bike shops won't touch. I was inordinately impressed with this quaint little bike shop and the extremely knowledable and helpful owner Jim. I am not from the area, but as I was on my way down on a big SF to LA bikeride with a puzzling recurring flat tire issue. His shop was recommended to me by a couple of local cyclysts I met on the road. He solved the mystery, fixed up the problme really well and while he was doing it he told me all sorts of useful information. I have been cycling for many years and have never come accross anyone with so much knowledge about bikes. Even though I live about 100 miles away, I will aim to take any serious bike repair/upgrade issue to this great guy! read more
