Visited The Orange Store for the first time on Saturday March 8, 2026. Young lady at counter in front not very friendly, nor was the Young lady in the back cooking the food. Ordered a shrimp po-boy on French bread. Noticed the young lady actually counting the shrimp to be fried. I have never seen anyone doing this when making a poor boy sandwich and I have been eating poor boy sandwiches most of my life. Very disappointed when I sat down to eat my sandwich. There is touristy New Orleans - and then there's the working class, local, every day New Orleans - corner store po boys and bodega style places off the main strip. Po boys were created for poor people, the working class. The French Quarter is like a disney land version of the culture beyond the borders. You can find so many gas stations, corner stores and the like outside the city like this selling GIANT po boys, New Orleans dressed, for waaaaay cheaper than what you find in the strip. I like supporting families who own their business and not just the big corporate places that are all owned by the same people on the strip. Love this place! It's known for the teriyaki wings and they do not disappoint. I will say because it seems as if they have new owners the taste of the teriyaki wings are a bit more salty. The first time I came in my brain couldn't make sense of this place. It looks like a house, but I found it online by searching for a grocery store. They didn't have much in the way of grocery items. No produce, in fact the shelves were half empty, but there was an entire wall dedicated to t-shirts and hats? And then there was a kitchen in the back...with po boys? Yes, po boys. This ended up being the last thing I ate on a flight out of the city. I always try to grab a little something for the plane ride, and in a rush ordered the shrimp po boy, not knowing the amazing quality of the meal I was about to enjoy miles in the sky. Damn. I wish I had more to say, I know this is one of my favorite po boys in the city (right up there with Verti Marte). Against my better judgment I went to this place on the recommendation of my Uber driver for a poboy. I usually go to another place on Claiborne St. The shrimp were fried like fried chicken instead of fish fry and the hot sausage poboy used links instead of patties. I'm a patty lover. The burger is institutional, mostly a stale bun drenched in condiments and its jacked-up patty is only 1/16th of an inch thick (see photo). Rampart street food store is one of those places known simply as the "orange place" by locals including Sylvester Francis, of the Blackstreet Cultural museum. They serve the best shrimp po boys we had in New Orleans. Lemme warn you, its not a restaurant by any means. It's a convenience store. Step in, and you'll be greeted with your basic necessities: vegetable oil, candy bars, and a row of refrigeration units stock full of beer. Walk to the back and you'll find a window into a kitchen. It may be difficult to navigate through the menu. Don't stray to the lo mein side of the menu, stick with the sandwiches and you'll find the shrimp sandwich right above the oyster sandwich that's been crossed out with a sharpie. The day we were in New Orleans, it was raining cats and dogs. While we planned to go back to the hotel to consume our sandwiches (you're not allowed to eat there), we couldn't. It's a convenience store that looks like a house from the outside, but has a kitchen in the back and a window where you can order food. Some random guys at a bar overheard us looking for po boys and they recommended this spot. Once I consulted with Yelp, we immediately headed over. It's quite the experience. Walk to the back and you'll see a big menu on the wall and a window where an Asian lady will take your order and then yell at you when its done. We did the shrimp po boy and the hot sausage po boy. They were served on French baguettes and were pretty legit. The shrimp was the better of the two, but both were great. Hefty pieces of fried shrimp and just the right amount of mayo and veggies. At $7, you really can't beat it. The hot sausage was a bit cheaper at a hair over $5. We also got the yaka mein because my friend who grew up in NOLA told us we had to try it. It wasn't great. And not only because it was 85 degrees out. Pretty bland and the beef was an unappetizing shade of grey. I later looked up photos of yaka mein on the internet, and those looked much more delicious. But yeah, come here for the po boys. Stay because you can also buy toilet paper and off-brand laundry detergent while you wait for your food. Cash only, as if you had to ask. read more

Last year I ate 13 shrimp poboys in the drivers seat of my Dodge Charger car while I drove to Jacksonville Florida with just my knees and no hands on the steering wheel because I needed my both hands for the sandwich so that I could cram them into my mouth but I almost crashed into the guardrail and sendt sparks flying onto the nearby flora before regaining control of my vehicle since i was falling asleep even though i was eating; so I went ahead and drove so fast. In my opinion, this was once the best shrimp po boy in town.. big shrimp, perfectly tempura battered and fried. Ive given it 3 tries since I got my first bad shrimp po boy but after the 4th of the same low quality today, I'm forced to accept that it's just not going to happen. The shrimp have been small, dirty and dry,with the tails of the uncleaned shrimp left on. The battered has changed. Very sad to see your favorites disappearing on the block. Best. Shrimp. Po'boy. Ever. I will be the first to admit that our 4-day trip to New Orleans centered around food. We'd been off the plane for about 45 minutes, and we'd already shared a muffaletta and an order of beignets from Cafe du Monde. We're foodies (though I hate the term). That's why I was glad to have read about this place in the New York Times 36 Hours column (http://travel.nytimes.com/2007/12/16/travel/16hours.html). Rampart is basically a convenience store, and in a part of town where we never would have "stumbled" upon it, or even known to go in if we had. But boy are we glad we did. We ordered one shrimp sandwich, and watched with delight as she stacked on a giant gorgeous French roll: -mayonnaise -shredded lettuce -tomatoes then, the magic started happening. She proceeded to start stacking what I feel are JUMBO shrimp onto the sandwich, so big in fact that only 4 fit on this easily footlong roll when stacked across. I was briefly disappointed when I thought she was stopping at 4 shrimp... THEN 4 more shrimp (8!) THEN! 3 more staggered across on top of *those*. OMG. That's right; nearly a dozen shrimp on this sandwich. She then closed the top bread "lid" onto the sandwich, gave it a good press down, cut it in half, and wrapped it beautifully. I am the luckiest lady in the WORLD because my family lives around the block from this corner store, and we can stroll on over, get jumbo, panko-breaded shrimp piled on French bread (a HUGE sammich for just $5.99--try to get THAT price in the FQ) and then walk back and lounge in the courtyard at the house. Located in the back of a bare convenience store, this is the best po-boy I have had so far in NOLA. Excellent shrimp po-boy. Huge sandwich (about a foot long) with huge shrimp to match. About 10 or 11 stacked three high. Super fresh... hand battered and fried while you wait. Dressed with mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickle, and hot sauce. Solid roll. Sandwich and a 24 oz High Life for under $8. Walked to Esplanade and ate in the middle of the street under a tree. As another review mentioned, you can't eat in the store. And you wouldn't want to. On the day I visited, it was about 90 degree outside and probably about 110 degrees inside. Waiting was the hardest part... was dripping sweat. My husband loves holes in the wall with delicious food, so when I told him we were staying near a place that people called "the orange place," that sealed the deal. The counter is at the back of a convenience store - first you order in back (or call ahead), then you pay at the front when you get your food - cash only. While we were waiting for our catfish po-boy and shrimp po-boy (the "french" size), we got a couple of beers out of the fridge (only $2 each). They've got a number of toppings, including hot sauce, ketchup, lettuce, tomato, and some others. As for the sandwiches, yum!
