This is one of those pubs that I have been wanting to visit ever since I discovered it while exploring Brisbane. Okay, it is a bit out of the way, but it is certainly a rather large pub with a pretty large beer garden. The problem that I found with it though was that their beer selection was rather limited, which was a shame because I actually expected more from a pub like this. Then again, half of it was closed, so maybe there are better beers in the other bars, but I would have also expected that to be the case in the beer garden. read more

I'll be the one to say it. There's secret toilets downstairs you should be using if you come to The Normanby. If you're upstairs, you have the toilets with Barbie and Ken dolls on the door to signify gender. (Yeah, I know.) If you're downstairs and outdoors like most patrons, you have the toilets beside the bar. A long queue out of the female toilets is not out of the ordinary on a busy night, nor is a staff member coming to unlock the door to a stall where a girl has passed out and/or vomited. I hate queuing for anything. There are secret toilets inside the downstairs restaurant (Bovine). It's as easy as walking in and using them. You're welcome. read more

Best meal I have had anywhere in Qld. We ordered 2 bowls of the olives stuffed with feta and lightly crumbed, expecting around 10ish small olives. We got 20 large olives each, so half are going home as a takeaway. For $6, a cheap appetiser for 3-4 while waiting for mains. Sticky chilli pork ribs, melt in your mouth, very tasty, just enough chilli, best ribs I have ever had. Partners Pork steak was fabulous, blue cheese sauce was great. Mains range in price, but value for money. Would highly recommend, and will be back. read more

The Normanby; another place that goes down in history for its claim of amazing steaks and its penchant for a loose Sunday sesh. It's been a while since I've had the opportunity to see the inevitable Normanby crowd with boys in muscle tees and girls in clubbing dresses. More recently, I got to experience the other side of the Normanby and had a really great and surprisingly upscale meal at their Bovine Restaurant. They've converted it into a really classy area, which is nice; the young'uns keen for a hectic night have a great time outside and upstairs while those keen for a really nice meal enjoy the furnishings and atmosphere of the restaurant. Good work Normanby for balancing yourself out so well. I don't know about the steak, but I had a chicken salad the night I was there and it was fantastic. Never, ever have I had a salad as delicious and perfect as the one at the Normanby that night. Plus the most you pay is for a steak and the other meals generally sit near the $15 mark. I'd go back in a heartbeat; whether for the great meal or for the raucous fun, I'm not too sure yet. Alas, the Normanby has impressed me and I therefore bestow upon it a rave review! read more

In this day and age of restrictions on the advertisement of alcohol prices and specials in QLD pubs like the Normanby are becoming all about the food and drink combos. The popular Red Hill pub now offers the following deals: * (Saturdays) -4 Smirnoff Vodka + Mix (any mix) + Petite Eye Fillet with Chips and Salad and Sauce or Grilled Barramundi with a Rocket, Pear and Parmesan Salad for $19.95 -'CIDERDAY' 3 schooners of Bulmers Cider or 3 Coronas + a giant 400g rump, chips, salad & sauce for $19.95 ** (Sundays) 4 Smirnoff Vodka + Mix (any mix) or 4 Coronas + a roast dinner, veg & gravy for $14.95. It's a pretty good deal when you break it down. Of course, it means you'll have to settle in for a while. Fairly dirty, very loud! People are everywhere and drinks are flying. I'm not sure how much drinks were, but if you're lucky enough and wear a short enough skirt you may score a drink or 2 from a gentleman, ladies. It's a bar. Being a buffalo wing fan, the first thing I had to try was the aptly named Buffalo wings on the menu. Once they arrived I was a little shocked by the dark brown colour opposed to the traditional deep orange red associated with Buffalo. Sadly, the wings had no resemblance to Buffalo wings and same, same for the accompanying sauce. The wings were a smoky BBQ flavour with an aioli type side sauce. As any die hard Buffalonian knows that the wings should have spice, vinegar and deep richness. I would have loved the more traditional offering of blue cheese and sour cream concoction for the side sauce too. In contrast, the wings in their own right were quite tasty and satisfy your chicken hunger pangs, but they just aren't Buffalo derived. Overall a fair offering at a high price. Oh Lordy do I have some memories of this place...more accurately 'lost' some memories at this place and I dare to say that I'm not the only one. I have always had fun at the 'Normbo' as its commonly known and that probably has something to do with the fact that I only ever go on Sundays. If you are going to potter on down to this 122 year old, heritage listed watering hole of mammoth proportions I suggest you do it on a Sunday. Every Sunday without fail, there will be a stream of cabs lined half way up Musgrave road and often an almost equally long queue of people waiting to get in. So obviously a hot tip would be to get in early to avoid the wait. The Normanby has many bars and various different indoor and outdoor areas to cater for groups of all sizes and preferences. The live music on the weekend is surprisingly decent and the atmosphere is very casual, where you often see guys walking around in boardies and t-shirts. If you become hungry despite the fact your mates tell you that eating is cheating there is some decent bar food on offer in addition to the award winning food served up in the restaurant 'Bovine' which is too good to pass up. read more

I can't say I love the atmosphere, but the food (which has in the past been a bit on-again, off-again) is pretty good these days. Standard pub food like steak and ribs are well done, and they're pizzas are surprisingly good too. The Bovine 'restaurant' offers a marginally less yuppie-bogan ambience than outside, but I believe the food is the same wherever you order it, so sit where you like. read more

On any afternoon or early evening other than a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, The Normanby is a great pub with an even better restaurant. Its got nice outdoor areas, is very relaxed and casual but still classy looking and has fantastic food both at the bar and the restaurant. On a weekend, however, the place gets crazy packed. Chock-a-block full of girls and guys dressed to the nines right alongside those in shorts and thongs, there are lines to get in, lines to get drinks, lines to go to the toilet and lines to get cabs when its time to leave. The noise level is too high too hear anything and there is barely enough room to move inside. Obviously the rest of Brisbane thinks otherwise, but I go to pubs to enjoy quieter drinks and a chilled out session, whether before a massive night or the afternoon after. The Normanby is not the place to go if you feel likewise. read more

This is where a lot of people come after work on a Friday, it is always packed with pretty people I like to say. Everyone is still in their work gear and having a good time. The atmosphere is indoor and alfresco, the tables are high, low and round... the food is really good. I've only ever had the steak here, and I remember it was really good, it did take a while to come but when it did, it was cooked perfectly. The edges were just a little burnt and crispy and the meat was fresh and cooked perfectly medium like I like it. Not well done... or medium well... just right. The prices are very reasonably and it's a great place to listen to music hang out with friends especially on Sundays and they have cheap package drink deals you can win so you can always bring your friends and drink for free (yippee!). Parking is a bit of a premium but it's good, it's clean and it's very refreshing to go to every now and then just for a change. read more

The Normanby is always going off on Friday after 5 and Sunday Funday. Lots of noise and masses of people. But it is also good for a cheap steak or fish and chips and few pints of brew on a chill night. I would consider this to be our local go-to pub, which we avoid on Friday and Sunday:) read more

Good atmosphere good happy hour price, But the steak was really not good. Took the rump steak at 29$. I ask medium rare (ob the rare side) they told me that the steaks here are cook on the rare side. I didn't eat my steak.... It was medium on the well side their answer was: thats how we do our medium rare here. Was really dry and could eat it :( read more

Great on a Sunday arvo/night, grab a group of friends for a quiet few beers or big Sunday sesh. Having driven past in the morning and seen their ever changing signage at the lights we wanted to try Bovine. The meals took a while but when they arrived they looked enticing. However my steak felt a little overcooked, but maybe it was my fault for choosing medium. The pepper sauce helped but interestingly it was grey, so I wasn't that keen on it. My wife's rib and ribs was interesting. The meat was beautiful and tender however it was completely overshadowed by the *texas* sauce, which was far more chilli than barbeque. The waitress told us the chilli level changed depending on who was in the kitchen. We won't be playing this particular lottery again, it took four days for her to regain any taste in her mouth, but if we could revisit the steak without the compromise we'd give it another go. read more

Despite the many urban myths (e.g. "there's an ambulance parked outside permanently on Saturday nights") and words of warning told me by friends ("The girl's toilets are decorated with Barbie dolls! It's messed up!") I was pleasantly surprised by The Norm. I went as one of the attendees for my friend's Normanby win. She won a round of drinks and food platters for a group of friends and I was invited along. I got two free drinks and during the night they brought out huge plates of fried foods, including spring rolls, chips, and curry puffs. Afterwards, we went upstairs for a round of snooker, where there was plenty of seating for those who weren't participating to mill around, socialise, and drink. Overall, it wasn't a bad experience, but it wasn't particularly memorable night. I'd drop by the Normanby for a drink after work, but I wouldn't stay for a night out. read more

My daughter has her 21st party in a function room at the Normanby last night and and both the food and service were really ordinary. The only time the staff spoke to me was when they wanted more money for the bar tab. The guy on the music would not turn the volume down when asked to even though via the Normanby I was paying him. The security guy was openly rude . If you want an overpriced, noisy average venue with average food and below average food choose the Normanby Hotel. read more

If I could give the Bovine less than 1 star I would. Over 2 hours from ordering to receiving our meal & given we had kids, it was a Wednesday night and there weren't that many people, I expected more. When we mentioned this to the waiters we got attitude and finally our meals, which were cold and not what we asked for. They offered to give us free bowls of hot chips as a replacement for our cold, dry and either over cooked or undercooked steaks (which we paid a minimum of $30 for). went there saturday night for dinner, it wasn't really busy but the service was extremely slow, couldn't order a glass of wine from the bar, we tried for about 10 minutes to get the attention of a waitress, placed the drinks order and waited another 10 minutes for them to arrive. we ordered steaks and were asked how we liked them cooked. not one of the steaks were cooked as ordered. a very disappointing dinner. as we had da table in the garden we had to pay when placing our order. won't go theree again. read more
