The latter which I had yet to experience in Brisbane. Sporting four areas, the venue has something for pretty much anyone. On Saturday, it was bustling. Almost every table will filled (which is good going seeing as they only opened on the 19th) and amongst the couples and a friends populating the venue, there was one big family table having dinner. It diversity of the venue was comforting and reminded me of the English pubs I spent time in growing up. We had one quick drink on Saturday and tonight I returned to grab a quick dinner. It was quieter tonight, which suited what I was looking for. The menu, in my opinion, is spot on in size. Bat snacks, sharing sized options, sandwiches, sides and bigger plates. It's creative, but not over the top or complicated. I opted for the chip butty, because chips in bread. Come at me. The bread came filled with shoe strings fries, black garlic mayo and homemade tomato sauce. It was crisp and saucy and... bloody perfect really. Sitting at the bar (it's all bar service), I chatted to the bar staff who were just the right level of attentive. I asked for a glass of red to go with my sandwich, a slightly odd pairing, I know. My glass of Pinot was light, velvety and was the perfect match. For a venue that's been open for an entire seven days, they're doing something right. Wait, scratch that. Everything right.

Unfortunately I had just missed the live music so I will have to go again but the vibe made me feel like I had been transported back down South. I really liked the red interior, booths, and chandeliers. I am a bit confused by the stuffed monkey on the stage though... Will be able to give a better review next time when I grab a drink off the menu! Will share if the drinks are as good as they make them in the South.

Hey, Lefty's! I'm feeling what you're putting down. You're so cool and yet you probably don't even…read morerealise it. Well played, Sir, well played. We were set to see a movie at The Barracks across the road from Caxton Street and rather than dine at any number of the respectable choices in the Barracks centre, I made a beeline for Lefty's. Arriving just before 6 I was the sole punter in this seriously brooding and sexy bar. Would it seem out of place to see Saloon girls do the can can atop the higher level balcony? Probably not. I approached the bar and asked the bar keep what their house drink was. "Whiskey and apple," he said tossing a Granny Smith apple in his hand. Yeah, not just apple juice from a bottle but freshly squeezed, baby. I was all prepped to order said drink when he let slip it also goes well with Gin. You, mister, are good. "I'll take a gin and apple, thanks!" My dining partner arrived and we settled each on having their interpretation of the cheeseburger. Be warned: unless you are ravenous, you'll easily be able to share this between two. We didn't realise this and I tapped out long before I could claim my plate of fries and burger complete. Still, it was delicious and for $12 it's an affordable take on "pub grub." This place already had some serious swagger at 6pm on a Wednesday night, I can only imagine (and look forward to seeing it) in full swing on a Friday or Saturday eve.

So, I end up at one of Brisbane's major entertainment districts, or should I say pub streets, on a…read morenight when there happens to be a major sporting even going on down the road. As such, places like this are certainly going to be packed, as was the case here. Still, despite that I did manage to get served in a reasonable amount of time, though I did find it rather difficult to find a seat, namely because all of them had been taken by this time. I'm not going to claim that this place is necessarily all that bad though, particularly since there were some rather nice beers on tap as well.

As far as I'm aware there are only two places in Brisbane you are likely to hear Bon Jovi's "living…read moreon a prayer" eight times in one night - My uncle's living room and the Cacko dance floor. And believe me when I say you would much rather spend a Saturday night at the latter. The Caxton Hotel is the highlight of the many bars and restaurants that line Caxton Street. In a testament to its growing legend I've heard it said it was the street that was named after the Hotel, not the other way around. And true enough, if you happen to stop in at the right time on the right night (after any game at Suncorp Stadium is a safe bet) you will be greeted by a vibrant party atmosphere and a vastly diverse group of people all having a great time. At the Cacko young patrons barely of drinking age share bar space with men who look as if they've been there since the establishment opened in 1884. Quality steaks are served with tasty home-made hollandaise sauce and the dress code is relaxed - in the sense that there isn't one. It's worth noting, however, that the Caxton will not be to everybody's taste. The music is often dated and always cheesy and all available wall space is given to large televisions airing sports of every variety. As a result there is a bit of a skewed male to female ratio on most nights. But in the end if you're looking to have a fun night out, hate waiting in lines and don't want to worry about dress codes or the responsible service of alcohol than the Caxton should be your first port of call.

I returned 9 years later to have lunch with my parents. Although I'm not a footy fan, I quite enjoyed myself. When you walk in, you can turn right into the pokies room and lose yourself in a wash of rainbow, neon machines begging to take your dollars, one by one. Beyond the pokies is the Halfway Cafe, where you'll find a fine pub lunch. My mother and I are suckers for buffet, so we went downstairs and got the smorgasboard ($20 each excluding drinks). The buffet stations are huge. It's the standard soup- salad- vegetables- carved meat- pasta options with some surprising added extras. The cheese kransky is delicious, the spring rolls are more-ish if nothing else, and the grilled octopus salad is succulent and juicy. There is also quite a large assortment of asian cuisine including honey king prawns and sweet and sour pork. The only inconvenience is having to go to the bar and pay for your drinks separately. You've got a wealth of tables to choose from- booths, or window seats, so you can watch the Broncos train while you dine. While you're there, go have a gander at all the old jerseys and trophies. My favourite area is the wall just outside of Alfie's Bar that has old photos of big beefy footballers who were snapped while getting tackled, and getting their junk yoinked up to their armpits. There's some corkers in there, let me tell you. Even if you're not into footy, Broncos Leagues Club isn't a bad place to have a beer or to have a sit down meal. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
