This is sort of one of those inner-city pubs, probably because it wasn't all that far from the city. However, it still had a sort of suburban feel about it. That doesn't mean that it was necessarily a bad pub, and it did have a pretty decent beer garden with a pretty large screen, no doubt for the State of Origin game that was going to be on later that night. I'm not a student anymore, so I don't enjoy the RE. And even when I was a debaucherous, binge drinking student, I still didn't enjoy the RE. Let me count the ways: 1. Pretty sure I've seen every stupid fight take place inside and directly outside the RE between young boys who can't handle their drink. 2. Every 'special event' aimed at students will either have creepy older men who come to see young girls prance around in skimpy outfits. 3. Every 'special event' means I will be going home with regurgitated dinner and drinks on my shoes, and sometimes even on my clothes. And it's not my own regurgitation. 4. During busy periods the staff will ignore you unless you pretty much yell for attention. Which only adds to the ridiculous volume in the RE during aforementioned busy times. 5. The epic battles for the pool tables. 6. The epic battles for space on the dance floor, the smoking terrace, the bar..... 7. The 'live music' seem to have 'Jesse's girl' on automatic repeat. 8. The surly security guards who eye off my male friends, and eye my female friends up and down (read between the lines). In fairness, karaoke can be a hilarious experience at the RE, Sunday afternoon sessions can be nice if you can get a pool table, and the drinks can be very cheap. But they wont mix cocktails so don't order any or you may get the long winded story from the bartender about, 'how much it sucks because the chicks dig it.' If you're not a student I'd say avoid it unless you want a pretty trashy night out, and honestly every now and then I do succumb and show up for cheap drinks and to 'support my local.' But I think I may just pump my music really loud and pour syrup on the floor to recreate the sticky, sticky feeling, and save my cash. Goon sack anyone? read more

The funny thing about the RE is that everybody always claims to hate the place but that never stops them coming back. I am not shy to say that I am one of those people. The thing is, the RE has everything has a lot to hate about- it is filled with bogans and loud-mouths, plays pretty bad music and can get overcrowded but it also has a few perks- cheap drinks, cheap food and it is in a convenient location (for anyone living out west). I hardly come here during their busy nights mainly because I want to avoid the crowds. I generally will come here on a Sunday or a weekday during the day time. My friends and I will usually try and find a quiet spot so we can enjoy a cheap jug and chill out. For that aspect, I do like coming here. They also serve $10 lunch deals every day which are pretty good for what you pay. The RE was not designed for the posh and upper class. It is just a casual pub that offers cheap drinks and food and can gets a little crowded.If that is not your kind of thing, come here on a Sunday afternoon or on a weekday for lunch. read more

I have spent many a sunday sesh in my youth relaxing at the Royal Exchange. Fondly known as the R.E. by its patrons, this pub mainly caters for uni students with its large beer garden and upstairs seating and pool tables. You will always find a few local, older regulars in the downstairs bar, however, who are often watching whatever sport is being streamed on the many TVs. The R.E. is known for its sunday sesh and as a wednesday night venue for students. They also hold annual student parties, like Toga at the start of the year and the Beach party at the end of semester. For the latest Beach party they filled the parking lot with sand and even had a mechanical surfboard and extra bar set up. The R.E. also often has live music in the beer garden. While normally just your average pub covers band, it does the job and will get many an inebriated uni student bopping along. As well as cheap drink deals (which often change but are up on posters inside easy enough to see), the R.E. also has some good deals on their pub food, like the $12 Monday Parma or $11 Thursday steak and beer. While the R.E. is not the classiest of venues it is much beloved by past and present student populations. I have many fond memories of the place and when I visit it now, years on since my days of Toga parties and Wednesday night drinks, it still gives me that warm fussy feeling inside. read more

Ohhhhhh, the RE. it's cheap basics and leering men lure me back every time. When I think I've had enough and I never want to see it again, someone suggests a Sunday sesh, and I'm right back where I started, drinking beer and dancing to Brown Eyed Girl. It's not my fault I end up there, really it's not. It's my local, so it's the logical choice. But honestly, I do have a soft spot for those token songs that are always sung live at such places and I can't help but become drunk on the atmosphere alone some nights. It's a solid, safe choice for a student like me and is in all honesty one of the great pubs to watch a game of footy in (not that I do that sportsfans, I'm just there for the sticky floors and good company). Look, it's just a staple in my life now. If I go out at all on a Sunday, it's got to be the RE. Class and sophistication be damned, I'd prefer to have a casual and always-fun night out at the RE. I have mixed feelings about this established, and even about this three start rating. The Royal Exchange (Known to its patrons as the RE) controls everything that it can quite well. The bouncers aren't thugs, the bar staff don't get frazzled and are proficient, and the DJ knows what they're doing (choice of playlist notwithstanding.) But what really lets the RE down is the one thing it really can't control: the clientele. After stepping in, one can feel their IQ drop by several points. You expect every second man to punch you in the face, and public sex is apparently in the cards. So unpleasant were the other people I had to spend the evening with, that I left shortly after my arrival. In closing, the RE would and will be a fantastic establishment once it stops being trendy for 18-19 year-olds to go there, and when it starts functioning like a normal bar. read more

The RE really is my favorite spot for a night out. Wednesday is student night which means $4 basics, loud music, good vibes, and generally packed. The venue really isn't the nicest of all the places you could go in Brisbane, but there's 3 bars, some pool tables, a concrete floor to dance your heart out on, 3 different smoking areas, and places to sit down all around. RE really is what you make of it. All the basics for a great night out are given to you, you just have to make the most of it. I rarely see fights break out here, but if there are, security are onto it pretty quick. Bartenders are fast and have a pretty good system for getting to all the people lined up. Tips: 1. Make sure you have cash 2. Don't bother dressing up too much 3. Be careful when opening the door to the ladies bathroom - you WILL hit someone 4. If you're looking for a good time RE is the place, but don't be too impressed with it. Wednesday nights are student nights and as the name may imply, it's the night where there's no filter and everyone is at it. I'm all for having a good time and really like packed places, but when it gets to the point where every time you move somebody is elbowing you from all directions, that gets a little too crazy for me. You've got to love a pub so casual that they'll let you in wearing thongs and flood there establishment with sand every year for an annual beach party. This is the kind of joint where the beer comes in jugs, the bar staff wear novelty hats and are encouraged to show a bit of bellybutton and the bands crank out the soundtrack to the clientele's young lives (with occasional helpings of Cold Chisel and Australian Crawl for the older blokes). Often I've found I've enjoyed the styles of their mid-week acoustic soloists more than the three-piece bands they get in for the bigger nights. One particularly good act is a guy called Harry Healy, though I don't thin he gigs there anymore. If the downstairs smoking section and dancefloor area become too hectic for you, you might try weaving your way upstairs for a game of pool of to relax in the lounge. There's also another bar in an inside room on the lower level which hosts karaoke some nights. If you find yourself there during the day you might want to try one of their $10 lunches (good for lining the stomach if you're settling in). read more

The Royal Exchange Hotel, otherwise known by locals as the RE, is a famous tavern located in the middle of Toowong. It's known for it's cheap drinks, crowded bars and high population of UQ students. Believe it or not I frequent the RE for one reason or another. I prefer to go on Sunday evenings. On a Sunday you can expect a really chilled vibe, with a busy bar, but not overwhelming crowds. In essence, it's the perfect balance between busy and accessible. Alternatively you can head to the RE on a Wednesday night and be swamped by the high volumes of eager drinkers heading in for cheap spirits. On a Wednesday you can also expect the security to high sensitized to any behavior that could warrant expulsion from the bar. I can only speculate, but I anticipate this is done to manage to the high volumes of patrons, so they can allow more drunkards in, so they can order their two drinks before being asked to leave for some menial reason. From the way I've been describing the RE you may anticipate it to be a small venue however you're absolutely wrong. It's quite huge truth be told. I have no idea how they manage to gain so many visitors every single week. The bar is always clean and is mostly designed for functionality. This being said, the best seat in the house in my opinion is the balcony on the top floor. So if you get in early I'd order a few jugs and stake out that area. Overall, I enjoy attending the RE for the crazy atmosphere but in reality it can be a bit of a pain sometimes. Oh, the Royal Exchange or RE as the locals call it. This is where all the students come to party, especially the ones that recently turned 18. This is not a place for people who wants to enjoy a cocktail and have a meaningful conversation on any night of the week. Midday, this place has a relaxed vibe where you can order a pitchers or beer and chill with mates. Once the sun goes down, especially on Wednesday and Sunday nights, all the students come to party. The RE hosts tons of theme party night, always with student priced drinks. This is the place to drink and act cheaply. There's a dance floor area that always has some sort of DJ, and on REALLY special occasions the wolly's parking lot with turn into a second dance floor with another DJ stands. There is an upstairs area, usually with a second DJ every Wednesday and Sunday, though sometimes it's the same music from downstairs. The balcony has places to sit and overlook the dance floor. It's hard to have a quality conversation because it's a loud venue and privacy is not a thing. The most common attendees are recently 18 year olds, students, and creepy older guys looking to get younger girls, though don't let that deter you. For a backpacker or student, this is the place to be. The RE will provide you with the chance to have a good night as long as you have enough drinks in you, which they'll provide for student friendly prices. Ok from other reviews I can see it is popular with the students! But I can tell you I am NOT a student but again only frequent the RE during lunchtimes every now & then. Some describe it as run down but for me I say it has character & atmosphere. Whenever I am there for lunch its always relaxing & quiet & the food is cheap but tasty! And the service is great it never takes all that long to get the food to our table. The R.E is a place my dad used to go to. So this place has a lot of history in Brisbane and depending on what nights you go it can still live up to the reputation that it had up to 30 years ago. Sunday sessions at the R.E are a favourite of mine, $4 basics all night and a dance floor that is all kinds of good. Live music is always great in Brisbane as well and the R.E will deliver on this front every time. Try and get in early and grab a seat upstairs on the balcony, it really is a great place to go. For a younger crowd go on a Wednesday or Sunday as the UQ college campus is just up the road and these guys will always be there in force. Fridays and Saturday nights are usually reserved for the older local crowd so if that's more your thing give it a go then. If I'm being honest about the R.E then I have to mention that it really is an old place, it's run down, dirty and filthy at the wrong times at night. There are fights, drunk idiots, sloppy girls, creepy old men and any other number of potentially bad things. But that's all part in parcel with the places biggest charms. It offers up it's best and you can either take it or leave it. Also don't worry about collared shirts or anything, t-shirts and shorts are almost expected. read more
