One of the very few old man pubs still left in Brisbane, that hasn't been renovated and turned into a shiny new bar. The Brunswick Hotel is home to Harry's Trivia, which now runs on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights due to the popularity. It originally was just a weekly event, but then went up to twice a week, and now it's held there 3 nights.... and it has been running for well over 10 years. The Brunnie is also known for the weird round pool table and Karaoke nights on Thursday night. I used to live only a hundred metres or so down Kent Street and could hear the warbling from the drunk patrons on Karaoke night. Not great when you're trying to sleep, but if you're up for a crazy fun night, it's the place to be. The food is just your usual pub fare. There are always meal deals and special offers. There is also a bottle shop/drive through attached to the hotel.

Well this is a down-to-earth pub if I ever saw one. But I suppose that the Brunswick Hotel is far enough removed from the indie scene of the Valley that it can retain its own identity, and good on it for doing so. Any place that does trivia is a raging success with me, so I naturally give the Brunswick hotel a massive amount of brownie points just for that. The best part about trivia here though is that your group can be a big as you please, which is handy when unexpected people show up. And it wouldn't be a pub scene if there wasn't karaoke. Depending on my mood, I either cringe or whoop in delight at the prospect of karaoke, but at least here you can serenade people and have full audience support. That's every Thursday and Saturday from 9pm, by the way. It's a little bit bogan but hey, aren't all the best pubs? And it's a decent place to come and get a good feed and a tender steak with chips. Give this slightly scary looking (in my opinion) hotel a go if you're passing through the Teneriffe end of the Valley and particularly if you're feeling like some trivia or karaoke.

The new Brunswick Hotel is a pretty great place for a relaxed afternoon or evening watching some sports, enjoying some drinks, hanging out with friends that should suit a local clientele. Is this a place to go out of your way for and visit from adjacent neighborhoods? I doubt it. The place has very recently gotten a big facelift and only just reopened (importantly, the bottle shop too). The cool old corner building is still there but it's now flanked by a much more modern outfit with indoor seating w table service and spiffy outside area with many separate seating nooks, cushioned benches, and full bar (the 2-3L beer taps are pretty cool). Outside the food ordering works via the buzzing / flashing plates system where you'll have to go pick up your order inside. The place looks definitely great but the experience is not really unique. Convenient if you're in the area, but not a 'destination venue'. Prices are actually very decent for food and drinks (for example, cocktails $10-15), but the one food item we tried was a bit disappointing.

The reno on this place has added another spot to the New Farm area. With a live music playing on a Sunday arvo, this place is good just to sit back and chill. Lots to choose from on the menu. Prices a little high for a pub meal but were very yummy.

The Brunswick Hotel: the stalwart of Brisbane's inner city shitty pub scene. This place is a riot- I can't express my affection for this place with words (but I'll try). I live in fear that one day someone's going to put the Brunswick under the knife and transform it into another stainless steel, odorless, cultureless pub- just like what's happened to so many other pubs in the area. I address this to those who look upon my fears as fantasy: I want the tiles on the wall, the stupid round pool table, the pokies, the buffet dinners, the beer sodden wood furniture, the down to earth bar tenders, the tradies, the gamblers, the pensioners. I want to often be the only woman in the corner bar. I want my Tooheys New, and I want it cheap and to keep on coming. I want to be able to go into the 'Brunno' on a Thursday or Saturday night and watch munted blokes do karoake versions of Copperhead Road and Tubthumping by Chambawamba. I want to watch a lost hipster girl get ogled by the fellas while she does a spritely version of Lou Reed's 'Walk on the Wild Side'. I want to be able to put money down on a bet that says I'm probably going to have to help some drunk bastard out toward the end of the night. I want to go to Harry's Trivia on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights, make up a crude team name, and pretend that I know something about anything. There's no other place I'd rather go for a $10 pub lunch. All I have to say is this: Keep the Brunswick shitty! Vive la Brunswick Hotel!

Head to Brunswick Hotel on a Tuesday night and you'll find the bar packed with Trivia goers and pokie enthusiasts. If you're coming on a Trivia night make sure you rock up earlier to secure yourself a table. Then settle in and order a Wagyu beef burger. They come with a side of chips and are disgustingly delicious. The buns are crispy and the patties juicy; it's the perfect pub food. However, they took the water cooler away at around 9pm, which I found strange considering there were still a lot of people eating who may have been designated drivers. There were also sticky rings from glass bottoms that people had rested on the leather lounges by the Pokie machines. Not a place you'd bring your parents, but a place you'd come for a sloppy night out with friends.

It's a semi-fancy-ish bar & restaurant and only offers a wide range of drinks (of course), but also has some delicious food you must try. The menu lends itself to sharing with small & large plates on offer, but if you're feeling hungry, you can have it all for yourself. Small share plates range from $8- $22, & large share plates range from $22-$42. We highly recommend trying the Pork & beef ragu pappardelle ($24), and the pan fried house gnocchi with guanciale, lemon sage & truffled peccorino. These two dishes were so heavenly. The pork & beef ragu was so tender & full of flavour, & the Pappardelle pasta was amazing. The gnocchi was cooked perfectly;light & fluffy like clouds. The pecorino & guanciale gave the right amount of saltiness, & the beautiful addition of the lemon sage was devine! Yum, yum, yum! We also ordered a side of the sweet potato wedges with taragon aioli. This is a MUST! So tasty! Service at the time was a little mixed, but it was only their first night, & it improved as the night wore on. We love what they've done with the place, especially the Frank & Mimi mural, & some old pinball machines near the bar. We unfortunately were way too full to fit in dessert, so we will definitely be back!

Very decadent and can even be shared if you aren't feeling too greedy. The coffee is yummy and service is excellent. The moment you signal that you're ready to order (sailing a little flag on the boat which decorates the table) the waiters swoop in. It's nice because you aren't heckled or bothered like in the USA. When you are ready to order, the mast goes up and the service comes running. The restaurant is pretty loud because of the concrete floors, so I try to avoid it on the weekends or grab a table outside if at all possible. The gyros are delicious, I recommend the chicken and the vegetarian. Cheap, generous and tasty- Mediterranean done well.

We visited early one weekday morning for a lazy breakfast at the new kid on the block. I selected from a large menu which unfortunately didn't identify which dishes were gluten free. The staff were very happy to help however, and advised all of the breads could be substituted with gluten free versions so I could satisfy my toasted sandwich cravings. I opted for the Truffled Cheese Toastie with gruyere cheese and truffled salsa. It was presented on a wooden board with fresh greens and red onion to help liven it up. My beverage was aptly named "Sunshine" and contained a mixture of pineapple, orange, apple and strawberry. All up I paid $22.50 for my breakfast and was happy with the serving size and quality of everything. It was fairly quiet at that point with most of Bulimba at work, but I can imagine it getting busier on weekends or Friday afternoons for after-work drinks and food. My toastie was golden and crunchy and the truffle filling was gorgeously decadent when paired with the copious amounts of gruyere. Surprisingly I ate all of the greens and found they helped avoid getting overwhelmed with the big flavours on my plate. The juice was fresh with just the right balance between the fruits and was definitely filling for what I paid. Service was friendly and accommodating and the food arrived quickly. As we were paying our bill I noticed an array of baked goods in the front cabinet with some interesting looking gluten-free options. I think I can see at least one other visit to Ambrosia & Co in my future..

Patrons are happily packed into this small establishment, with inside and outside seating. At first you think the place is busy because they offer carefully selected craft beers on tap. But it's this and so much more; they've a full bar that allows them to feature delicious craft cocktails, and a very nice wine offering. I appreciate purveyors who have narrowed their offering so you can't make a bad decision. The staff is fantastic too. Friendly, helpful and efficient. All this gets them to 5-stars, despite my high standards, but then the food starts to arrive... Their offering of "morsels" are excellent! Presentation, check. Value, check. Quality, check. The…read moremenu is hearty and unless you have super-human eating ability you really won't be able to experience the best of the menu as a solo diner. Still with me? Okay let's begin. I stopped in for lunch and dined solo mid-week. Despite being school holidays it was relatively quite. This is definitely a place that needs the atmosphere of many diners to make it feel like (what I imagine) a true Honky-Donk American bar would be like. The waitresses on duty were so lovely and polite. She explained the flag system they have. Just pop the flag atop the menu holder and it signals to them you would like to ask them a question / order / ask them the meaning of life. This worked fairly well with but a handful of patrons, but I do wonder how it goes when they're at capacity. Defeating the very purpose of dining in an American-style venue, I ordered the Mad Dog Tortilla Salad - grilled chicken, mixed lettuce, smoky bacon, tomatoes, avocado, corn, beans (green), goats cheese, sour cream, house made dressing and tortilla chips. It's a hefty salad and it's probably an illusion to think it's remotely healthy, but I did figure it was more virtuous than a burger or hoagie. As far as salads go, it was filling, a good balance of all ingredients but, and this is entirely personal preference, something this robust needs to be served in a bowl not a silver platter. It's just easier eating. All in all: a solid addition to Bulimba and gives them a part of the Brisbane fixation on US-style eateries.

I pursued the menu and the first thing I thought is "YES 'MURICA!" Eager to try them out, I mentioned to my DH when he was finally 'settled in' (and in the midst of removing his shoes) that I'd like to get drinks to 'celebrate.' He put back on his one shoe, and off we went! We ended up sharing a 'Southern Special' 10 Hour Braised Brisket with our chosen sweet potato fries and Bourbon glazed carrots. There's a few of those specials (it's on the second to last page of the menu, just after the BBQ page) - reasonably priced and they come with two sides. I'm not a big meat eater, but daaaammmn that brisket is fiiiinnnnne. And naturally, I came for the drinks - I got the Chipotle and Grapefruit margarita -- perfectly sea salt rimmed Mason wide-mouth jars. Yummily sweet with a nice heat at the back of the throat. I winkled my nose at my DH's choice of Long Island Iced Tea, because I was being a snob as that drink was my 'young, stupid, cheap, and often watered-down preferred drink' - but I am pleased when I tasted it -- good mix and definitely not watered down (just don't let the ice melt, k?). We also ended our meal sharing 'Mum's Milk Punch' (my original desire for one of their Chocolate Peanut Butter milkshake was denied by DH - he's looking out for me). I enjoyed looking at other people's meals, and had a giggle when I glanced at a pretty lady taking a bite out of one of their German hot dogs (...sorry, I know.) In all, we have been impressed, especially as it is a sister restaurant to La Quinta next door (we weren't terribly impressed with the food there). They have the same ordering system where when you're ready to order, put up the flag on the Longhorned cattle head at your table.
