    The Royal

The Royal has undergone a killer renovation and come out the other end like the Swan from the Ugly Duckling. It's now a really nice place to enjoy something to eat with specials abounding and a really good range of booze too. Had the pasta and got the prawns too - it was really good, quick prompt service and the food arrived really quickly, which was great given it was lunch time. Give it a crack, you'll be Royally surprised. You're welcome.

However, upon wandering inside I discovered that they actually had a nice tap beer available. That, to be honest, was pretty cool. In fact, it made this place feel much better. We were seated and had a look at the menu and were told that when we were ready we should order at the bar. So we headed to the bar to order our meals and grab a couple of drinks and when we got back to our table another couple had been seated there...not happy. We found another table and awaited our meals but the mix-up put a dampener on my mood. We ordered the Roast Duck and Eye Fillett to share. The roast duck was described as orange and madeira oven roast duck with braised cabbage and creamy potato. It was a very pretty dish but let down terribly by overcooked duck and an undercooked potato stack despite the menu promising creamy potato.. Very disappointing. The medium rare Eye Fillet with mushroom sauce was very well cooked and accompanied by a side of delicious chips. The salad a bit bland and boring but who orders a steak for the salad anyway...

The seats in the new booths are all grubby and totally unappealing to sit on. I am not a fan of lining up and ordering food and being given a buzzer to collect my meal, especially when the prices are pretty much the same as some restaurants nearby where you get full table service. But, it's The Beach House and this is how their processes are, so that's cool, I just like some good ole fashioned service when I decide to dine out. I ordered the Monday night rump special, it was ok, food was fresh and reasonably tasty but not a mind-blowing foodie experience, but it filled me up, which is what I needed at the time. When it comes to this strip of eating options at Chermside Shopping Centre, there are more preferable options.

Beach House is a pretty standard generic chain tavern with locations all about Southern Queensland…read more I've been to this one at Chermside quite a few times and always felt disappointed. The first annoyance was when I bough a jug of cider for my friends as it was my round and some of them didn't drink beer. The jug was not cheap, which I expected, but the bar man filled the jug up with over 50% ice. I'd never seen any bar do that before, and as it came from the same cider tap that delivered chilled cider for pints and schooners it looked just like a nasty way to save a few dollars. The second annoyance was when I bought a Coopers in a bottle from the bar. The bar man didn't roll it before he opened it. When I told him that a coopers is meant to be rolled before opening he claimed he had never heard such a thing. Ok, well if you work behind a bar you need to know these thing. The third and the worst annoyance was another time when I went to the bar to buy a jug of beer. As the bar man was filling the jug the keg ran out half way through the filling of the jug. The bar man then went to the back to find another keg of that beer but informed me that they were all out of that type. He then helpfully suggested I just let him mix the second half of the jug with a completely different beer, and assured me that "they tasted great mixed together." He was clearly just trying to save a few bucks for the bar by not filling another full jug and was trying to take me for a fool. I refused but was amazed that any bar man would try and cheat their paying customers like that. I'm not sure if things like that a common but it's a terrible way to treat your customers. It might save a few dollars in the short run but treating customers like fools like that is a good way to make sure they won't come back. The food is ranges from good to rather plain. The burgers were especially nice but the chicken parmigiana was quite average and overpriced for the $20.90 it cost. Other meals are standard pub grub and generally it's overpriced for the sub par quality. Unless you have a particular reason to go there its best to avoid. There are better pubs around. Pubs that don't fill your cider with ice or try and give you half and half mixed beer. Avoid.

At first glance, it still has a bit of that 70s feel in the decor but looks clean & tidy. Staff are friendly & Reuben, the F&B Manager seemed to be everywhere ensuring it all ran smoothly. There was a big party already there when we arrived for dinner on a Friday night, but we were seated promptly. Old-school pub style: you order and pay at the bar & meals are delivered to your table. The food was sensational! MSA quality beef served with chips or potato AND veges or salad. Up there with the best steak I've had in Brisbane I'd say. We had a 2 for 1 voucher from their advertising brochure, so the most expensive items we ordered: Reef & Beef with prawns & calamari though normally $33 was a bargain priced $16.50 each. There is a buffet as well, and many other meal choices under $20 They also do a $10 steak on Monday nights if your looking for a cheap date night out, and a few other bargains throughout the week, trivia etc There was a good little guitarist playing covers & a play area for the kids. Pokies & a TAB in the adults play area ;) All in all it reminded me of going to the footy club with my parents in the country in the late 70s, back when kids fitted in with what the family schedule rather than the other way around ;) We will definitely be back. Without fail from lunchtime and into the evening there are hoards of tired, hungry and thirsty individuals packing out the place for cheap pub feeds and drink specials. I have been there with a couple of mates for dinner and my hats off to the chef for being able to maintain a high lever of food. I do only order the steak, salad and chips but it's worth more than what I shell out. This doesn't matter because the remainder of my money is always spent on cheap drink specials they have. In six months I hope this place is still going when the Northern Busway is completed, but I wouldn't be surprised that the owners pack up and leave because of the major change they would have made over the past year.

Well, I can't say that it is one of those trendy inner-city pubs where all the hip and cool people hang out, but it isn't a bad pub, even if it is because of its old style frontage (I like those old style pub frontages). Seriously, it is basically your typical, everyday, suburban pub with a pokies room, sports bar, and restaurant (though it doesn't have a beer garden). Oh, I should mention that the staff were really cool, so if you do like in the area I do recommend it (but then you probably already know about the place anyway).
