I have been housebound for some time so was excited by the prospect of lunch at Publovers Aspley. Once my favourite place to go, I had to admit the atmosphere had been getting "tired" but the food was great and the prices appealing. Since the renovations the space is much more open and attractive, but that's where the magic stopped. Prices have risen at least 25% across the board, the service is much less friendly and the food was more than disappointing. Having both ordered 200g steaks, my portion was MUCH smaller than my companion's. The salad was a dozen assorted leaves, five shreds of onion, three of carrot, a tiny wedge of tomato and another of cucumber. There was a pile of chips, and my RARE steak was more like well done, tough and dry. When the waitperson asked if everything was great I actually said, for the first time in my life, that I was disappointed and my meal was not actually as ordered. She rushed off to check that I was telling the truth and came back to say there must have been a problem in the kitchen as they take pride in their steaks. With a full glass of soda water in front of me she then offered me another drink to make up for my disappointment. Unfortunately that was. to me, rather insulting, so I will not bother with the venue again. read more
