The place itself has a great laid-back beach-bar vibe however the attitude behind the bar just didn't quite match it. The 3 star rating is primarily based on that fact. We took a weekday trip to the beach at the end of July and were pleasantly surprised to find Tacklebox Tavern open late on a Sunday night and it was karaoke night too! The bar was fairly busy for a Sunday, with a fun mix of locals and travelers and an age range that seemed to go from early 20s all the way into the 60s. The crowd was friendly, the drinks were cheap, and the atmosphere was exactly what we needed for a fun Sunday night at the beach! My biggest complaint was the service. The bartenders consistently seemed annoyed and irritated, and at times it felt like simply ordering a drink was an inconvenience to them. I completely understand that working behind a busy bar can be hectic, but the attitude was noticeable enough that it took away from an otherwise really enjoyable experience and was mentioned by multiple patrons. A little more friendliness behind the bar would have made this place a home run for us.

Our server was friendly, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the meal. The atmosphere is hard to beat, especially with the beautiful waterfront views and the live music on the pier, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The only downside was the seagulls, which can get pretty aggressive once people finish eating. There is a certain charm about this hole in the wall bar establishment that has kept me coming back over the course of the 5 years of me being stationed in Jacksonville. Just like any spot you go around with frequency everyone knows your name. It really didn't matter what time I went around there because someone I knew always ended up coming in for a little. As long as you are friendly and make an effort to meet the others that hang out here you will have no problems having your own little new group of friends. Tony owns a great spot here. This is the best karaoke bar in North Carolina. They have an outside bar that is open when there is good enough weather and an inside bar that somehow always maintains the ability to be maneuverable no matter how packed it gets on the weekends. They have a drink special almost every night of the week and free pool once a week on the two pool tables located inside. I've never gotten involved with the dart league they have but there is one available to sign up for. They also have an electronic dart board that my group usually takes over on the weekends while everyone takes turns going up to sing. They do have snacks at the bar and small tombstone type pizzas, popcorn, and corn dogs. From what my experience is they serve until it gets too busy which usually isn't until the later hours. The main bar inside usually has 2 bartenders on the weekends and one at the outside "Paddy-O". I've never had a bad experience or had to wait too long for a drink. As long as you speak clearly and are polite you'll never have a problem ordering. Jaime, Jera, Marilyn, Sheldon, and Charlie are usually the ones working on the nights I go and I wouldn't have it any other way. The parking situation is pretty good but make sure you get there a little earlier on weekends or you'll park in the grass or along the road on the side. That isn't a bad thing but I prefer parking on the actual asphalt. I will be moving out of the area soon and will definitely miss the bar and the community. It's just one of those places I have a ton of memories of friends that have come and gone throughout the years and am glad I found this spot. There is a ton more I can write about this place so all I will say is that you just need to visit. I will say that if you are going for the first time I would bring a friend or two along because you can't go wrong. If you don't have fun it's because you probably just don't know how to.
