Beautiful trail. This was one of our Zion NP Highlights. It is the last stop on the national park shuttle bus and theN you have a mile hike to the start of the trail. We hiked to the floating rock and then turned around. The terrain is beautiful and Wall Street is beautiful. This is a hike that you need to plan before you head out. Weather, distance planned, hydration and snacks are very important things to consider before the hike. Also make sure that you have adequate hiking shoes as you will be in water almost the entire time. Have fun and be safe. read more

The Narrows hike (bottom-up) is by far my favorite hike so far. Walking through the water being surrounded by the canyon walls is unlike anything else and the beauty never stops throughout the entire hike. We arrived at Zion in late August 2017 around 8/8:30am (time change had us confused and a little later than we hoped) and hopped on a bus to get us to the trailhead. The bus stops at every stops along the way. We met a couple of nice people one the way who shared some previous experiences and talked about other parks. We finally reached the beginning of the trail around 9am. The beginning of the trail at the trailhead (riverside walk) is dirt until you reach the canyon which is hiking in water from there on. This stretch is a short and easy hike and is nice for helping you dry off on your way out and back on the bus. Once you hit the water the fun begins! Definitely try to arrive early so that most of the canyon is to yourself. A few people had gotten off of the bus with us and those were who were around us until some would stop for photos or just hike at a different pace. The water was very cold but not unbearable. We had bought hiking poles specifically for this hike and we were so glad that we did! It is definitely worth having poles or a walking stick. We hiked round trip roughly 5 hours with stops for photos and lunch/snacks briefly passing Oderville. The water depth varies throughout with some areas being dry. The rocks are slippery so you definitely want to take your time so that you don't fall in the water. While it was a hard choice initially only having time for 1 hike in Zion I am extremely happy we chose to do the narrows. Next time I hope to take the top-down route! read more

NOT as bad as they make it seem. Near the entrance there is a sign that sales "warning, it's a 16 mile hike, don't hike unless you're a marathon runner etc" but that's honestly just there to scare you. As long as you hike on a good day (no flash flood warning) then you're good! The majority of the hike is in the shade, so even though it might be super hot that day (I went when it was 104 degrees) it's very do able. I think this hike is a must even if you don't make it all the way inside. I think I only hiked half of the trail but it was pretty worth it still. The views and scenery does seem repetitive but it's very fun. I highly recommend renting the neoprene socks at the rental store. Hiking shoes with ankle support is a MUST otherwise you'd be twisting both your ankles as hiking on the rocks under water can be dangerous. Hiking sticks are also necessary in my opinion to keep your balance as you hike. You can rent all these three items for $25. BRING FOOD. I suggest fruits, sandwiches, granola bars, and lots of water. I hiked about 6 hours back and forth and i'm glad I packed food. Nature is beautiful and this is definitely a spot you must visit yourself! read more

Very cool experience, but I will say, I think it is a bit overhyped. However, we did do it in the winter requiring extensive layers of clothing. We went from the bottom up, which requires you turn around and hike back out. Looking back, I wish we would have down top-down because on the way back I was pretty miserable, because I wasn't seeing anything different an I was very cold. I would have liked warmer weather, but a positive of going in the winter was having the place totally to ourselves. Overall cool experience, but my least favorite hike of the trip. read more

We hiked in waist deep water at the deepest but most of it was just ankle deep. Bring a stick or hiking pole and something to keep your feet warm. My friends and I just wrapped up our Top Down Narrows overnight hike. I am an avid hiker/backpacker and this is hands-down my favorite trail EVER! You don't have to have a permit to hike Bottom Up but you do need one to go Top Down. The great thing about this trail is that you cannot get lost and you can hike around and turn around when you've gone far enough. Make sure to rent neoprene socks or water booties, water shoes and a hiking stick/pole. The neoprene socks keep you warm and the stick helps you not slip on the rocks. You can pick these up in Springdale before entering the national park. The entire Narrows trail is along a river in a deep (and narrow) canyon prone to flash floods, especially during monsoon season. The trail is strenuous if you plan to hike the whole 17 miles (one way) but if you hike the bottom section, it's not too bad since you can leave when you get tired. Most of the trail is in water at least knee deep and can get to waist high in certain areas, especially if there was recent rainfall. Make sure to keep your phone in a ziplock bag in case you fall in the river. There are tons of people around the bottom portion of the trail and fewer people the farther along you go. The trail is definitely more picturesque with fewer people so if you want cooler pictures, hike at least 2-3 miles in. Note that your speed with be much slower than a land trail. Having to wade through a rocky river slows you down. Expect to hike about 1.5 miles per hour. I saw many young children on the trail and they were loving it! I think it's safe for children 8 years and up. Definitely take some time to explore the Narrows if you're in the area. It's a truly a unique and beautiful hike! read more

My favorite hike of all time. So cool to see how small you are compared to the canyon cliffs when you look up. The water level was not too bad when I went. It only got to make knee high at its highest. The canyon does give shade at some points. Highly recommend to start really early if you want to get a head start. The were a lot of people at the time I went. We didn't even finish the whole thing because it was real long. One of the Best hikes! On a hot day or even on a cool day, the hike is mostly in the water. From ankle to waist high. Of course all depending on the winter that they had. This year the water depth was between the ankle to knee, with some spot up to the waist. It's a very relaxing hike as you take your time and enjoy the amazing views and fun atmosphere where everyone is friendly and having as much fun as you are. The water is cold at 1st but you do get use to it. The river rocks can't be very slippery (especially the black rocks) so be careful and take your time. Water shoes are a must! You can even do water socks and or a walking stick as well but are not needed. Make sure to bring lots of water and food. Once you get out there you may not want to stop, it's so much fun you will just want to keep going. Bring a trash bag with you so that you can take out all your trash with you. There are no trash cans or restrooms after you start the hike. Bring a light jacket or sweater with you, most of the hike is in the shade, with little sunshine so being in the water it could get cold. This hike can easily turn into a all day hike, so plan ahead and keep track on how long it takes you and how far you go because you will have to go back the same way you go in. It's such an amazing hike, it's definitely a must when in Zion. read more

This is the 2nd trip within 3 years for my family, and The Narrows is the main reason that brings us back. Perhaps, this is one of the most popular place besides Angels Landing in Zion National Park. You have to take park's shuttle (it's free) to get there and you can't miss because it's the last stop of the route. Before get in the shuttle, don't forget to check the weather condition of the Narrows in Visitor center. Flash flood can happened if there is thunderstorm in the forecast. And the dangerous thing is there are not much of high grounds for you to shelter once you in there. This is an experience of a lifetime once you are in there. Trust me, I'm not exaggerated. Hiking underwater? It's unreal and so much fun. It's challenging because nothing but rocks and water, they're super slippery, but, you'll be rewarded with the views of the Narrows. It's awesome. Walls color is changing depending on the sunlight, and the time when you get there... Water levels ranging from frequent mid-thigh deep to chest deep in certain areas. Sometimes you have to climb over a large rock if you don't want to go deep underwater. Lol. Ninety percent of time you'll be under COLD water. However, when the sun rises, it'll be warmer. To achieve a full, fun experiences, there are few important things that I need to mention: 1/ Wear proper footwear. I found that Keen waterproof sandals are pretty good (or any waterproof sandals that you like). FYI, I learned these info from previous TripAdvisor Narrows' hikers forums and, Boyz, they are so right. The good thing is you can wear these sandals anywhere. They are very comfortable. 2/Get at least a 5'-6' pole (you can find it in HD or Lowe's, I got a pair of hiking poles on Amazon for about $22.00), you can't go far without the pole because it's very slippery. And the deeper in the Narrows the better views. 3/ Bring enough water, snacks, and a small plastic bag for trash. There is no trash bin once you are in the canyon. 4/ Put your wallet, phone... in Zip lock bags because 100% you'll be wet. - Last, but not least, check the time for return back to the shuttle. Sometimes, we lost track because of many things such as the views, fun, excitement... Lol. read more

What a thrill! We went in later April when the water was really flowing and cold. That means no crowds! We were properly outfitted with cold water gear, although I didn't need the water shirt/jacket because I managed to not fall in the Virgin River. Takes a while to get to the Narrows because you get there by hiking the Riverside Walk. That hike takes a bit of time, so it's not like you jump right into the river. The challenge starts immediately when you cross the river and try to stay upright due to the power of the flowing river that only goes up to your calves! Certain parts of the river get really challenging to remain upright. You end up using your walking stick with both hands in front of you to brace yourself against the current. Use short steps because long steps will expose you to the rushing current. The deepest we got was to our upper thighs. Believe me, that was high enough. There weren't too many in the river with us and we could look out for each other easily, which was comforting. Very tiring because your leg muscles aren't used to pushing against a current. You go as far as you want, because there's only one way back and that's the way you came. Not an easy hike. But the thrill of a lifetime. read more

Bucket list....check! I totally enjoyed this place & would do again. This water hike is for all skill levels. So here is the deal on deciding to rent gear. I went last Saturday and started at 11ish. Weather was 82F, water temp was 46. My girlfriend and I rented pants package($45ish) from Zion Outfitters. After walking around the parking lot, I decided to take them off and boy was I glad! First, not the most flattering and second the water wasn't cold! I'm a San Deigan & it felt awesome. The water level in most areas was mid calf & highest it got was mid thigh...totally tolerable. I was dry by the end of hike. The shoes and stick are a must! You still get wet, but neoprene socks help keep warmth, comfortable and offer protection. I saw people in some crazy a** footwear and I'm sure they were hurting. We hiked 5 hours & felt like a champ the next day...no footsie/ankle pain. Go early, avoid crowds & photo bombers. Thing to keep in mind: -No charge for parking, but $20 to get into park -Shuttle takes about 35min to get to Narrows, which is last stop. Last returning one was around 7pm (shuttle make stops every 10-15 min) -wait time to catch initial shuttle can vary, ours was 20 min - time zone change (thot we were early....not) -one way in, one out -bring sandals for when ur done, it felt good to put those babies on read more

This was hands down one of my favorite hikes EVER! Yes, it can be crowded during the summer, but it's popular for good reason. Don't let the crowds stop you from going in - the further you walk in, the less people you'll see around you. I found that a lot of people stopped and turned around about 45 minutes in. You have to take a short walk to get to the entrance of the Narrows. It's a nice, brisk walk with different things to see (like a "crying" rock, great views of the red canyons amongst green trees) and the river quietly running next to the path. Once you get to the entrance, you'll see a little area where you can (responsibly) eat your last minute energy snack (mine was half of a Lee's sandwich) and change into your gear. My first step into the water was awful - in the beginning of the hike, the water is TREACHEROUSLY cold. I really didn't know if I could go on, but as I walked in further, the water warmed up and became a lot more bearable. When I went in June, the water level was pretty low. There was only one deep section that I had to dunk 3/4 of my body in. TIPS * START EARLY! We really wanted to walk in further, but unfortunately because the sun started setting we decided to head back. It would be a nightmare to have to walk back to "shore" in the dark. Also, we noticed the currents getting stronger and the water getting colder as the day progressed - especially as we were walking out. * Take sturdy waterproof shoes. The path is 90% rocky, so you really don't want to be stuck walking barefoot. I would recommend taking an extra pair of walking shoes to walk back in after the hike just in case this hike destroys your water shoes (like it did mine; the soles of my cheap water shoes ended up at the top of my foot. Don't ask how). * Rent a walking stick. If it hadn't been for my walking stick, I probably would've been swept by a current multiple times. The last thing I want is to fall into the cold water with no sun to warm me up! * If you get cold easily, it might help to take a light jacket and/or wear leggings. * LAST BUT NOT LEAST, take time to look up. I found myself looking down most of the time navigating through the rocks, forgetting to enjoy and really take in the amazing views. This is an added benefit to starting the hike early - you'll have more time to sit down, relax, and admire nature at its finest. Touch the cliffs, embrace the water on your skin, and marvel at the grandiose views around you. This stuff is priceless. read more

Go, go now...Ok maybe wait until they are open. If you have Angel's Landing, Fiery Furnace, The Wave, Coyote Buttes South, Bryce Canyon National Park, All the Arches in Moab, White Sands National Monument add The Narrows to your list of must do's. This is #3 of one of my favourite hikes to date! Good things and tips...from a short girl. For going in the middle of a scorching summer. 1. Being surrounded by the Canyon left and right at all different angles and heights is unbelievable. 2. Check the weather before you go...flash floods come quick though the area. 3. Go in Earlier!!!! I went in August so it is HOT! So being mindful of that like when I did Angel's Landing in 2017 I was on the 2nd shuttle bus in (in the AM-When I drove to Zion it was pitch black outside). It was cooler and less crowded. For the Narrows I think I was on the 3rd or 4th bus in and it was equally not as crowded (I was at the trailhead at 730 AM). 4. If you come in earlier and you want to drive/park at Zion you can actually find close parking because by the time you finish the narrows your most likely will be tired and having RockStar Parking is invaluable (I parked in Row/Area 1!!!!) 5. It is the last stop on the Shuttle (Stop 9 from the visitor center it takes roughly 40-45 minutes). 6. The walk (Riverside Walk) to the start of The Narrows is only about 1 mile (One Direction...it is a super easy walk). And it is paved! 7. Wear shorts in a wicking/quick drying material (keep in mind this was in August and the day I went the high was 102 degrees)! I saw so many people wear long pants and they ended up being dragged down by the wet sopping pants and just plain hot, or trying to hike up their pants (and not doing a good job). 8. Wear layers-I had a tank, a t-shirt and a hoodie...by the time I finished The Narrows the day had gotten progressively warmer...I only had the tank top on...I had peeled off the other layers. 9. The right shoes...(I am not going to preach to you what you have to wear or that you need to lay down money for specific hiking shoes) wear shoes that you are not that precious to you...they will get wet, they will get sandy, they will get a little dirty. I did not wear hiking shoes and I never fell...the sneakers I did wear did have traction...my normal running shoes are slick at the bottom. One type of shoes I would probably not wear is true flip flops. Or shoes that are true opened toed shoes. Make sure they have traction and that you are comfy in them. 10. Take a walking stick!!!! It will #1 help balance you, #2 see how deep some of the water is (in some area the sand does dip down without warning), #3 it will save your butt a lot of the time when you do lose your balance. (I thought it was hooey at first but I am so glad when I did bing one)...I think it helps you stay out on the Narrows longer...a lot of people with incorrect shoes (Like Flip Flops-turned around rather quickly). 11. Drink plenty of water (In summer it is super hot even hen you are playing in the water) and eat snacks...there are a few places where you can take a breather. I brought three 16 oz containers with me...by the time I got to my car they were gone. 12. I didn't take a water proof backpack but I did see several people. My backpack was dry as a bone. 13. Get a waterproof pouch or use a zip lock baggies for your phone for other expensive electronics...in case you do fall into the water. 14. If you go top down you do need a permit. Which you can get at the visitors center. 15. On the way back to the shuttle The Narrows was so over crowded and claustrophobic...get in early and leave early :). 16. I am 5'3 1/2" and the water at highest hit me mid thigh. 17. Be respectful to your fellow hikers. Be nice and play nice. It took me 8.5 hours (I started bottom up). I think The Narrows was really overcrowded the day I went due to the fact it is super fun, it is summer...and also Angel's Landing was closed (August 2018) because of falling rocks/flooding (they said it could be a year before it re-opens...which is sad). TAKE YOUR TIME!!!! This is not a race unless you feel you can finish the whole thing in an hour...Be prepared and know your limitations (I did 2 other hikes this weekend)...I was tired and knew that this would be my last hike for the weekend. read more

This was my favorite hike at Zion! Did this hike on day 1 and I am glad that I did that because I wasn't super sore afterwards so I felt like the rest of the trip I can still use my legs. But if this can't be on day 1, definitely do on a day after your legs are super tired and need rest. But also take that with a grain of salt because if they are super fatigue, it might be harder to go through the rapids and the slippery rocks. There are A LOT of slippery rocks, even with the water shoes. Below are some of my recommendations and advice based on my experience at Zion. Recommendations: 1. Start as early as possible! I started my day at 7am and after the shuttle ride, arrived a little after 8am. From Zion (Stop 1) to Narrows (Stop 9), it's about 40 minutes. 2. Day before your hike, rent the water shoes. To save time, rent the water shoes (that comes with socks and a hiking stick) the day before in the evening and wear them to the shuttle (not uncomfortable at all). There will be lots of people that do not rent them but I'm tell you, RENT THEM! It will save your feet and your shoes from getting ruined. I rented mine at the Zion Outfitters, that is right outside the entrance on the left. 3. Dress appropriately based on season you go. I went during Labor Day weekend and the average temp was 104 degrees but there is a lot of shade in the canyon so it's best to wear long sleeve (but it's not necessary, just a recommendation for people that get cold easily) 4.. Bring a Dry Bag. Even if you start early, the water level will get pretty high. Especially later in the day, it will get even higher. I went up the Narrows for about 4 hours. Start of the hike, water was around ankles, and then towards the top, it was at chest level. So if you don't want to hold your bag over your head (that is what most people did if they did not have a dry bag), I recommend a dry bag. 5. Optional - Unlike the other hikes, you probably don't need to carry as much water. So if you are worried about carrying too much weight because it's tiring, I feel like this hike is one of those that you can cheat and get away with less water. You are in the shade most of the time and barely any elevation. 6. Optional - Cellphone water case/bag. I love taking pictures and if you feel like you are going to be the same, I recommend to get one of those phone water cases. I bought one from Amazon (think it was only $5.99) and it was great to grab and take pictures while in the Narrows and not worry about trying to put it back in my pocket. read more

One of the Wonders of the Ancient World, The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, has never been confirmed as real but the Hanging Gardens of Zion National Park definitely are. That natural anomaly is certainly one of the most unique and beautiful aspects of hiking The Narrows, which is Zion's most popular hike. The name is based on the fact that the canyon walls are very close together at this section of the park where the Virgin River cuts through. As a result, the trail is narrow. Similarly, the distance between the top of the canyon rim walls is narrow. Consequently, it acts like a small crevice that allows but limits the amount of sunlight that hits the trail. At times, it looks like a divine light coming from and through the gates of heaven to grace the walls of the canyon. In addition to the beauty, the water element of the hike makes it a very fun experience. It is the first river that I hiked in. Moreover, the stones and rocks are surprisingly stable but obviously still slippery at times. Use a stick to poke at the ground or step gingerly on the ground ahead to test the stability of the rocks beneath before committing to crossing from one side to the other when the current is not very calm. In addition, the current of the river can be much stronger at various spots. If you see the water rushing hard over some rocks, it is a good indicator that it is not the most ideal spot to walk on or cross the river since the rocks are less stable and the current is stronger at those points. I wiped out once on the hike. My friend and I were about to turn around on the hike to return to the starting point. I went to cross the river to see if the scenery up ahead was meaningfully different than what we had already seen. I did not have my bag on me so I felt emboldened and carelessly crossed where water was rushing strong over rocks. The rocks were slippery so I did not have good footing. Then, the power of the water knocked me over. Luckily, I landed on my butt which cushioned my blow. Unlike Angel's Landing, The Narrows are not very dangerous if conditions are ideal. For this reason, it is a more trafficked and popular trail than Angel's Landing. The trail is closed when the water flow is greater than 150 cubic feet per second. The time of year that it is first open for visitors can vary drastically depending on the amount of snowfall during the past winter. In 2017, The Narrows were not open until Memorial Day Weekend. In 2018, there was significantly less snow and one of my friends was hiking there at the end of March. When the trail is in season, flash flooding is still a real danger. However, the park posts the conditions and likelihood of a flash flood. Ideally, the meter is at 0% chance. As the meter moves toward the right, which is in direct correlation with precipitation, the rush of the water becomes stronger and the hike becomes more difficult and dangerous. Obviously, do not attempt it if flash flooding is likely. Park guests have died during flash floods. The Narrows can be hiked "Bottom Up" or "Top Down". Most visitors opt for "Bottom Up" and so did my friend and I. We took the shuttle to the last stop: the Temple of Sinawava. Next, we walked a little over a mile on the RiverWalk before we reached a set of short stairs that brought us to the entry point for the river. Of course, it is more difficult to hike upstream against the current than downstream with the current. Moreover, you are snapping a lot of pictures on the way up too. On the way back, you have already seen everything and will spend less time to stop and take pictures. For those reasons, it is a quicker and less strenuous hike on the way back. Nevertheless, the amount of time and distance you want to hike in the Narrows is totally based on your preference. If you get tired or bored, you can turn back at any time. Most hikers make it up to Wall Street. There are no markers on the river. However, you will know you have reached it when the distance between the canyon walls become a lot more narrow. From the bus stop, it is approximately 3 miles to Wall Street. It took us 2 hours to each it. Near Wall Street, there is also a fork in the trail. Go straight to stay on the main path. If you take the sharp right, there is a side hike to Orderville Canyon. It gets even more narrow and darker down that route. We decided to keep on hiking up the Narrows for an hour past Wall Street. There were a couple of challenging and fun points after Wall Street but the scenery was more or less the same as what we had already seen. Oh my goodness, it was BEAUTIFUL! It can be difficult so watch some orientation videos online first to see if you can handle it. As far as views go, it's unbelievable, especially if you make it to Wall Street where the canyon walls narrow. You probably know what to expect because of pictures you've seen online, but when you're on the canyon floor looking up at the walls, it's just so amazing and it's hard to believe that the water you're walking through is the cause of such depth. It is a must see! Disclaimer: I am not a super experienced hiker. I'm mediocre at best, which I've come to realize more so after this hike. If I can do it, you probably can too if you are at least as healthy as I am. We hiked on October 29th. Weather, temperatures, and water levels may vary depending on the time of year so research accordingly. Keep in mind that it's colder in the Narrows than on the other trails due to less sun exposure. My boyfriend and I went upstream from shuttle stop #9 at the Temple of Sinawava with the goal of making it to the End of Wall Street and back by 6 pm to catch the last shuttle. The map said it would take 3 hours one way and I thought, "Yeah, right." Well, we made it to Wall Street before we had to turn around but we did not make it to the end... Ugh. It took us 3.25 hours to get to a point right before Hiccup Springs, which is almost at the End of Wall Street, with 3 stops to munch and hydrate, 1 stop to potty, and 1 stop to take pictures. We took pictures on the way too, but only stopped the one time for about 10 minutes to take good shots. We expected the return hike to be shorter, and it was. With no stops, it took us much less than 2 hours. To make an adventurous long story short, this is what I plan on doing next time: --Arrive as soon as the rental stores open to start as early as possible OR get rentals the night before and catch the very first shuttle, which I believe is at 7 AM. It will be colder, but I hear it's even more beautiful at dusk. Also, the earlier you show up, the cheaper it will be for you because you can park inside the actual park grounds. Parking does run out! --Rent neoprene socks, canyoneering shoes, and a walking stick. These babies were my best friends to help me stay warm and well balanced. My feet also appreciate the comfort of not hitting my toes harshly against the rocks, while my ankles appreciate the fact that I didn't slip so much. The shoes really saved me from much potential pain and I am so grateful there were places to rent from. I rented from Zion Adventure Company and it was $23 for the package--not bad at all! --If it's any colder than when I went, I'd rent dry pants also and bring some hand warmers. I was comfortable so I'm glad I didn't rent the pants, but if it got any colder, I might have cried . --Wear dry fit everything. Thank God that I wore dry fit leggings, but it would have been better if I wore dry fit everything. I wore cottons tops that retain water when wet, which would have made me much colder. Because of that, I made it my goal not to get wet at all above my waist. I accomplished that, but it slowed us down a bit since we took a little extra time to find shallower waters. --If bringing a camera, bring a Go Pro or waterproof one. We were chickens and didn't bring a camera at all--only our phones. Granted iPhones take excellent photos as well, but if you'd like to bring a camera and you're not used to going on such an adventure with bigger equipment, I'd suggest bringing something that is waterproof and light the first time you go. Otherwise, you'll have to make sure you stay balanced enough so as not to dip the camera into the water. If you drop anything, it can get lost between various sized rocks or maybe even get carried down the stream and end up stuck between rocks somewhere else. Visibility isn't very high unless you're in very shallow water, and the current can get pretty strong at some points so you won't want to lose something there where you won't be able to crouch down to find it. --BRING LUNCH. We only brought granola bars/beef jerky with some water and Gatorade. You might want to bring a sandwich or something. You will get hungry, especially if you hike further than we did. We survived, but then we each also ate and finished a steak with three sides at a restaurant in St. George afterwards--that's how hungry we were. --Be courageous and positive. I'm afraid of water so my goal of not getting totally wet also had something to do with my fear of falling in the water. If it pushes you, don't freak out. Stay calm and try to find your balance. It can be dangerous to fall depending on the rocks around you and the strength of the current. Be calm, be careful, and be positive because if you are able to complete as much as you want, then you'll find that it is a very rewarding hike! This hike is one of the most challenging and exciting ones to do when visiting Zion. Trust me this hike is worth the commute across the river and the large crowds. I would definitely recommend, but make sure to pick up some sticks it really does help when crossing the river. read more

Amazing experience and beautifully up-kept, I hope it stays this way! The park has done an amazing job of only permitting so many into the top down camping sites/hike and ensuring it doesn't get over ran. We camped out for permits at the office from 3am the day before and scored a sweet camp spot that made it totally worth it! Do your research and come prepared, be smart to keep it safe for yourself so that it can continue to be used for others. Everything about the hike was gorgeous and perfect. We did it with my 4 year old daughter, but I carried her the whole way and I wouldn't suggest the hike for young children, it's doable but the water is cool and hike is long. She loved it but carrying the 40 lbs for 17 miles in the water was definitely not the way I imagined it. read more

The Narrows hike has impressive scenery and was great on a hot day, but it was also incredibly crowded. The temperature that day was about 105 degrees in the afternoon, so the water was refreshing and the whole park seemed to be there. There were tons of families with children doing the partial bottom-up hike at the end of the River Walk, and it is a good place for kids to splash around a bit. We walked about a mile and a half through the water/over the short banks. Rocks varied from stable to loose and slippery, and we saw a few people fall, so make sure electronics are safe. There were a few teeny waterfalls that you can walk over that are definitely manageable for adults (and most kids 8+). To get to the Narrows, take the Zion shuttle to the last stop. From there, the beginning of the hike is past the 1 mile long River Walk, which is partially paved and relatively flat. At the end of the mile, you can get in the river and walk as far as you want. In the summer, we just wore our hiking boots and were completely fine. The water temperature was good in the heat, and I saw no need for water shoes (although a lot of people had then) or water proof pants in the summer. Then, I just put my shoes next to the AC when I got back to the hotel and they were dry by morning. The depth of the river varied from 0 inches (dry parts of river) to about 2 feet deep. There were a couple of spots were I saw some people go waist deep, but there were other parts along the width of the river at the same spot where it was only knee-deep. Obviously, this can change with rain and flooding. A walking stick also didn't seem necessary then. My expectation of this was beautiful canyons, which it was, but not as nice as I expected - partially because I'm guessing we didn't go as far as we should have and partially because there were SOOOOO many people. It was definitely worth the trip, but probably best if you go deeper into the canyon. read more

Notes to self: 1. Take the hiking stick. I rented shoes and socks at Zion Outfitters for $23. I had the option to take the hiking stick as well but decided not to, thinking it might be in the way. Definitely was wishing I had it on the way back. Can't tell you how many times I almost slipped. 2. Take a light jacket. Since a good deal of the hike is in the shade, it gets pretty chilly. 3. Take a change of clothes. Buy one of those waterproof bags and keep a light change of clothes for after the hike. 4. Go early. My friends and I went at noon but since this is a super long hike, definitely start early. 5. Take a lunch. You will be on this hike for the whole day essentially. 6. Invest in a Go Pro. This is something I've been meaning to do, but this hike definitely made me wish I had bought one prior to visiting. I was taking photos with my phone and one of my friend's cameras. We kept these in waterproof bags but it was kind of a drag to keep taking them out and putting them back in the bags. With all that said, this was an amazing hike. read more

Its wet. Its Steep. Its Awesome. Its an adrenaline rush. Its Dangerous. Its Deadly. Its a site to behold. Literally the Narrows is many things that combine together to be one of the most unique and special spots on the entire planet, let alone is a place that you can gain easy access to. Pro Tip #1: Do not hike here during the rainy season or the cold season. Well unless you have a death or frostbite wish... The views here are unparalleled almost anywhere else on earth. Perhaps a handful of other places have such special canyons worn through the plateaus/mountains of other regions over the eons, but this one is definitely special. Various minerals color the rocks as they seep out and down the sides. These minerals paint the rocks, Orange, Red, Purple, Black, Blue, and several others. The views up and out of the Narrows from the river bed are extraordinary and spectacular. Even at the beginning where you are surrounded by people, the scenery is unique and brilliant. Toss in the flashes of green from trees grasses shrubs and well it just enhances the beauty here. It's a trudge to get through the water as you hike into the Narrows. Sometimes it is up to waste deep with an occasional pool that is about 7 feet tucked into a random corner. The one pool I found like this, I went and cliff jumping into from about 15-20 feet up. Definitely a big thrill and lots of fun. However the water is a constant and ever changing part of this canyon. Sometimes great and sometimes a pain, it definitely is a huge part of what makes up Zion National Park. Pro Tip #2: If you don't own waterproof boots/shoes and having wicking or neoprene socks, rent some! It is a wise and cheap investment. I love the sign at the foot of the Narrows that warns you how to avoid flash floods and that you are taking your life and anyone who enters with you lives at your own risk. People can and have died here. A flash flood is not a joke at all. Be wary and pick where you will go should a flash flood come upon you. It may be raining 15 miles away and you are in imminent danger in the sunshine and not even aware or cognoscente of the issue. However the water is also a life saver. It lowers your body temperature unbelievably as you are hiking through upwards of 90 degree weather in the summer and makes it seem as though it is a perfect 70-75 degree day. Essentially this is a must see place at least once in your life if you like the outdoors and or beautiful scenery. You don't have to be a super outdoorsy or in shape person to be able to enjoy a short trek into this canyon in order to behold how special it truly is. Just be careful, the river is full of shifting rocks in places and that can twist or break an ankle. I cant wait to return to this place with my daughter so she can see it too! read more

Had a great time hiking the narrows! We rented the neoprene socks,boots, and walking sticks from zion outfitters near the park. They were around $30 per person, which isn't super affordable. But if your looking to hike the narrows, they are necessary if you want to have a pleasant experience. The boots helped with balance and overall walking during the hike. The neoprene socks are unlike normal socks and they were super valuable for the integrity of such a long hike. They kind of seal your feet off from the water. It bubbles it around in your boot so it very rarely gets your foot noticeably wet. It was a very strange sensation that you get used to pretty fast. The walking stick was also a huge plus because it helped with balance and it caught me before falling many times. Throughout the entire hike you need to be focused and pay attention on walking.Because the current, and all the rocks make it easy to trip. Although it was a 105°+ day on the surface, the sun doesn't get into the canyon until late morning. And most of the time you are in shade which helps to not get overheated! Bring lots of protein snacks and goodies because you will get very hungry. Absolutely stunning inside the canyon and it was truly a bucket-list experience! read more

Took my family to the Narrows mid July 2017. Loved the place! A must go if you love the nature, hiking, or have kids older than 10. I'd strongly recommend gearing up with water shoes, neoprene socks, and hiking stick. We rented them for $23 pp at the Zion Adventure. When we went, the temperature was about 15 degrees cooler at the virgin river. There were 1,000s of people between noon and 3 pm. I'd def go earlier next time. read more

Great hike up this canyon. Highly recommend. It is very important that you have the proper equipment. If you don't, rent. We rented shoes, neoprene socks and a pole from the outfitter in town. On our hike we watched many people struggle who did not nave a pole or proper shoes. Water was not the cold in Sept, but other people complained of cold feet. Pretty cool place to check out when you're in the area! The hike is fairly easy and is manageable for both adults and kids. The water is freezing cold but you'd get used to it after while. This place is the most popular of the 9 stops, so be prepared for the congestion of tourists! A lot of good photo opportunities. It may be hot and humid overall, but when you're in the actual narrows it is cool and breezy. read more

Hiked the Narrows bottom up. Definitely an amazing and unique experience! Make sure you check the river flow rate and weather forecast prior to hiking this trail. Pro tip: rent water socks/boots/walking stick and possibly a dry bag from Zion Adventure Company the night before you venture out to do this hike. If you are a Lover of nature and hiking then you must make it a priority to visit the beauty of The Narrows in Zion National Park. Make sure to check the weather before hand and verify the chance of precipitation is non existent or very very low. You should not attempt to go on a rainy day due to the risk of flash flooding. I would also recommend starting early and keep in mind that it will take around 45 minutes on the shuttle to reach The Narrows stop as it is one of the last stops. Also water shoes, neoprene socks and a hiking stick are a must! Why struggle when you can rent all of these itms for 25$ and go through the narrows with more comfort and ease. A dry bag is also good idea and kept my phone and Go PRO safe during the hike. I bought my dry pack off Amazon for around 20$. You will want to bring your Go PRO to remember this beautiful place and I was glad I did. I went mid September and was comfortable in shorts, sports bra, and a wind breaker. The water was not nearly as cold as I had previously read about so don't be scared. I loved The Narrows and want to go back again!! read more

The Narrows is an amazing hike and I personally believe you shouldn't leave Zion without trying it. I went with a group 10 and after breaking for lunch we split way some heading back and others(4) continued. This was during November and we all rented the dry pants, socks, shoes, and a walking stick. As a hiker you need to know your limits and understand when to stop. Make sure to come prepared with dry clothes if you are planning on going far in. Judge the water flow very carefully and judge the depth of the water even though in some part it can be hard. This hike is pretty strenuous and I don't recommend doing the entire thing for less experienced hikers. Don't carry to many things but also carry enough!!!! GOOD LUCK read more

My friend and I hiked this in January, and boy! what a truly incredible hike. A little forewarning if you go during the winter: 1) You're only able to hike from the bottom-up and back; you can't hike through. 2) The temperature is cold (the air temperature was 37 degrees-Fahrenheit, and the water temperature was 34 degrees-Fahrenheit during our hike), so you need to bring or rent a drysuit and neoprene socks (I recommend Zion Outfitters). 3) While the risk of flash floods are low during the winter, the overall water level is a bit higher than during the summer -- which leads me to my final point... 4) The last mile (north of the final landmark "Boulder Pair") is definitely the most difficult. Because of the higher water levels, the boulders create both rapids and pools. So you have to navigate slick, algae-covered rocks while attempting to maneuver around various obstacles. I enjoy a challenge, so went onto Big Springs, but my friend (and it seems most people) turned back at Boulder Pair. read more

I finally got to hike the Narrows, a total of 7 miles in all. The first time I tried, some people I was with didn't want to continue after a little way and we turned back. The Narrows is such a beautiful place as is the entire park of Zion. The amazing rock structures that form the Narrows tower above you and look so gigantic and amazing. The water the day we hiked was a murky compared to the first time I was there. That's because it had rained a day or two before. This made it harder see the rocks you were walking over. However, I never fell and only got wobbly in a couple of places. The best thing was that it was a refreshing hike, especially in the heat. The water was cold, but my feet adjusted quickly. I do recommend having 2 trekking poles or a walking stick to keep your balance in case you might fall. Many times it was slippery walking over some boulders because they had algae. Towards the end of the hike and close to the turnaround point, we actually had to do some scrambling. It was a bit hard because you're scrambling over wet boulders or small waterfalls going over the boulders. Hiking the Narrows is an experience that I'll never forget and definitely a bucket-list type of hike. If I can do it, being not in the greatest shape, pretty much anyone can. I wasn't even exhausted during the hike. It hit me an hour or so after we were done. read more

This was my favorite hike in the park. We did 5 miles round trip in and out. We rented the socks, shoes, pants, and walking stick just outside the park on Springdale side. It was October so we were glad we had the pants. It's pretty easy to cross the river if you just lift your feet (don't drag) find a rock, step up and keep going. Think rock hoping. People who were more cautious it seemed had more trouble. It was hard to stop at just five miles. You wanted to keep going to see what was around the next bend. We stayed warm with the rented gear. Dress in layers. We went in October, I had a tank top, long sleeve shirt and light jacket. Depending on if you were in an open sunny part of canyon verses shaded part changed temp a lot. If you can bring some sandals or shoes to change out of when you leave the river. Walking back in soggy shoes/socks wasn't the best. Plus the pants got kind of warm in the sun. I wish we could have taken it all off and walked back to car. read more
