Cheese menu
Hannah Q.

Cheese is one of my very favourite things in life, so imagine my delight upon discovering not only a cheese shop I'd never heard of but also that they run regular cheese and wine nights - heaven! Pretty much as soon as this discovery was made a few of us made a booking onto one of the aforementioned cheese and wine nights, or at least tried to. Due to their popularity the soonest date we could get was 4 months away. Clearly there are a lot of other cheese loving people out there. However before I knew it the time had arrived and off we set for Ramsbottom. The way the cheese nights work is that you can arrive any time from around 7.30pm and rather it being a led tasting as we'd initially thought, it's really just a fun and informal evening to try loads of different cheeses and enjoy a night out with friends in a slightly different setting. It's also BYO so you're welcome to bring your own wine and beer, with an array of soft drinks on sale. The 'menu' consists of 30 regular cheeses the shop stocks plus 5 specials that change on a weekly basis. The normal rule of thumb is that each couple can choose 5 cheeses between then, although as there was 5 of us we were allowed to choose 13 and I can tell you now this was not an easy decision! Choices made we were soon brought over several slates piled high with a variety of crackers, bread, chutney, olives and grapes as well as the stars of the show. The lovely man who looked after us all evening guided us through each cheese and then assured us that if any of the accompaniments were to run out he'd be happy to replace them. I can safely say that all the cheeses we tried we utterly delicious, with a couple of the ones we chose from the specials reigning supreme. The portions were also really generous and alongside the accompaniments I was absolutely stuffed at the end. At £9.95 this is an absolute steal and if they'd charged us double I probably wouldn't have blinked (did I mention they threw in a hot drink at the end?). It was a really fun, relaxed night and the guy who looked after us was an absolute delight. We've already booked our next visit and I can't wait!

Choose from 36 cheeses (not including their specials)

Where to begin? This place is a bona fide hidden gem in the market town of Ramsbottom. A café exclusively selling cheese alongside its coffee, they stay open in the evenings for turophiles (i.e. cheese lovers - I had to look that up). It's also BYO so you're free to choose whatever tipple you desire to accompany your slates, not plates, of dairy goodness. Tables are only available if you pre-book. When we arrived we saw on the chalkboard that they were now taking bookings for March 2015, so that told us just how popular they are. Seating was plentiful, yet the café was only about three quarters full when we were there - we assumed it was because they only do one cover per night. If it was in Manchester city centre you'd probably have an hour slot and that was it, but they have a much more relaxed attitude here, the same goes for the prices. "I'm sorry? £15 each for a party of four? But we had ELEVEN different cheeses, with unlimited crackers, bread, grapes, olives and chutneys - plus you brought us a hot drink to end the night. AND two of the group had desserts!" We would happily have paid twice that amount. Add to this the fact that the father and son team are quite possibly the friendliest, most accommodating hosts I've ever come across. It felt like we were guests in their house, not their workplace. Their standard 'menu' lists an impressive 36 varieties from the UK and Europe. There's also a set of four specials that changes regularly. We ended up choosing all the specials and then seven from the menu (typically five cheeses between two people would be sufficient and that comes to £10.95 per person). Tip: All the cheeses are available to buy for you to fill your face at home.

This is the cheese for 5 people at Mouse Trap's cheese tasting night!

More cheese Grommit and plenty of it. The Cheese Board is pretty much a celestial invention then. It stocks 200 types of speciality cheese, hampers and cheese wedding cakes; local, British and Continental cheese. I mean how good is that. Cheese tastic goodness and so much of it. You best get Daisy eating more cud, we're going to need the milk. Now I pride myself on knowing my fromage from the babybels but if you don't fear not. The people who work there all know their stuff and are really approachable. I wonder if there is such a position as a cheese guru and if so how can I apply. I left armed with the smelliest stilton ever. The more mould the better but only on my cheese not in general everyday life. It would also be rude not to try a nice slab of Wensleydale too. Remember to try keeping it local folks. I may stop mid sentence because this is me in my element. Cheese arama and total indulgence. What a winner.

But this is quickly demolished by the fact that the shop is very cramped to the point where i nearly fell over a basket. The staff ask you what you want straight away too, which i don't like, as i like to take my time and have a good look through everything and not feel harrassed. I love cheese, but i find it rather expensive to be honest for what you get as well - i got some sheeps milk wenslydale and it came to about £7 for my average sized hunk. It was nice, but for £7 i expect it to blow my socks off which it didn't. I've paid less for other, rarer cheeses at newer deli's in Harrogate - where i've been allowed to taste them first before buying as well - and been blown away by what i got. Its an ok shop, but i'm afraid that there are better contenders out there now to be honest.

In what looks like a newly built court yard with a bakery and a brewery this cheese shop really brings a modern touch to the village of Cartmel. We only found out about this shop after paying in the carpark and getting a little ticket from the machine that says see the noticeboard for this months offers with this voucher. Where's the noticeboard? Nowhere, but there is a man in the little ice cream hut in the car park who knows what the offers are. £1 off a £10 shop in the cheese shop. WHAT CHEESE SHOP? The hunt is on.... Found it.... and it's amazing!! I think the best thing about this shop (apart from it bring 14degree inside and a million degrees outside) are the little hand written tags on all the cheeses saying who made them - the actual name of the person not just the farm, where it is made, the type of cheese and what kind of rennet, so easy for a veggie to pick from. The man who served us, Harry, was very knowledgeable about all the cheeses and we listened to him serving other customers while we decided what to buy. There were many other customers! A lovely little busy shop. We eventually decided on the most local Cheese made 2 miles away called Saint John (a smelly cheese similar to stinking bishop), the best goats cheese i have ever tasted called Prospect, a Red Leicester and a smelly blue. We ate them all with a load of fresh bread from the bakehouse next door....

BTW, cake there is tasty, it's a pity that we didn't buy more.

Wow, where had this place been all our lives? Situated right near Castlefield Gallery, it seems to be operated by one or two friendly staff, and it's a lovely hotch-potch corner-shop-like offering with a surprising range of products. Walking upstairs we had luckily booked a table. It was chaotic ,full of screaming kids playing frisbee with the saucers and knocking teacups off the table. Cautiously I sat down avoiding this kid with sticky mitts behind me. The waitress came swiftly to take our order. The menu consists of some indulgent £4 hot chocs, cakes, sandwiches and well.. chocolate. I did consider the chilli but for 12 quid you can purchase a tea for one. This combined a hot choc/ drink of your choice, toasted sandwich , scone and some chocolate. I chose the ameretto white hot chocolate which turned out quite sickly. Then eventually the food arrived. Most of us had selected tuna melt or ham and cheese apart from one veggie.. so when the tuna arrived dripping all over the veggie sandwich she was not amused. We got this swapped. The tiered trays were intimidating so I just ate half a sandwich to make room for the scone and chocolate. The scone was nice the choclate was too experimental and sweet for me.. especially the honey choc. Also i Never saw any waitresses again..it was like tetris trying to balance all the plates and I really needed a drink . The noise level was high and the decor was that of a soup kitchen.. In the end we just went downstairs to pay. Needless to say I won't be back. I do what to try the Mousetrap instead?
