    An Electrik Cappuccino!
    Richard L.

I've been going to Electrik for a while now, as they make the best Cappuccino in Chorlton! When I'm not working, I always pop in for one and enjoy sitting at the front, watching the world go by! The staff are really friendly and polite, the actual bar is a funky place to sit and relax in (and use the free Wi-Fi!) and the coffee is great value for the size of cup you get. It's rare I visit Electrik in the evenings (actually it's rare I visit any bar, as I don't drink alcohol anymore!) but for a relaxing daytime caffeine fix, it's the place to go! :)

I'm generally not a huge fan of establishments which use a 'k' where a 'c' would suffice....Krunchy Fried Chicken springs to mind. However, I gave Electrik the benefit of the doubt as I thought the word may be Danish for electric, and the bar is supposedly Danish-inspired. After just looking this up on an online translator it turns out it is not Danish at all, but it's too late - I already like Electrik. Whether or not this self-proclaimed 'publicsocialhousecafebar' lives up to Justin and Luke's other venues/nights is for me irrelevant. This bar used to be called Revise and was empty on every night of the week including weekends. Electrik is busy every night of the week and heaving at the weekends. The place does have a European feel about it and is proof that us Brits can drink outside without being drunken yobs. I get a feeling that this place will be packed in the summer, as the drinkers often spill out onto the street at this time of year. When it's not raining the large patio doors which lead to the outdoor area at the front are open making the bar an airier option than Dulcimer, which is found just two doors down. I like the wooden chalet feel to the place, the quiz night is a good night, the drinks are averagely priced for Chorlton and where else can you find a FREE jukebox?

I've been to Electrik a few times now, it's a great place to grab a drink with friends. The food is quite alright and reasonably priced. The Sunday lunch sharing platter is definitely worth a try for only £24.

Located very close to Chorlton Tram Station is this charming cafe where you can find the most gorgeous strawberry and white chocolate cake. My coffee snob friend said that he absolutely adores the coffee here because of the great beans they use (says a lot). I had a flat white without syrup (I need caramel in my drink) and to my surprise I actually liked it! The decor inside is very chilled out and warm with comfortable couches with an artsy feel. The waiters were very friendly as well, happily chatting about things on the menu. There is an outdoor seating area as well which is perfect for soaking up the rare sunshine we get in Manchester. But when the sun sets this place takes a complete different turn and transforms into a buzzing pub and it seems like they have a good range of DJ's playing here as well. The crowd is mostly young professionals so you are not expecting any kind of brawls here (phew). Verdict : Definitely going back again when I am in the hood!

Veggie friendly menu: halloumi, falafel, veggie dog!

Friendly little neighbourhood bar with a casual vibe and a great ever changing selection of real ales. I plumped for a German wheat beer which they had on tap and it was blinking delicious. Didn't sample the food as we were heading into the city centre for dinner after a few drinks. I confess I was reluctant to leave Electrik having made myself right at home in one of the cosy booths. Family friendly earlier in the evening, Electric stays open later at weekends than fellow local bars. Seating available outside. Free WiFi.

After spending close to a decade running one of the biggest and best Manchester club nights in Electric Chair, Unibombers Justin and Luke have gone all mature and opened a bar in leafy but lively Chorlton. Like most people, I expected a real 'scene' bar, akin to the Deaf Institute. Somewhere where the boys could really make a success of things by applying all of their years of experience and their wealth of contacted contacts. But after spending an albeit pleasant night there, I have to be honest and voice my fears that this feels a little bit too much like a pension plan. All that time running one of the most crazy but clued up nights around, were they just saving up enough money to escape? I thought we really had something together! Was it all just a front? I ask these questions because for all its Scandinavean style charm, Electrik just feels like any other bar-for-thirty-somethings. I suppose it is a little unfair to expect such a seemless transition- just look at Cream owner James Barton's attempts at opening up a series of Babycream bars- they are completely different arts. I just feel like nobody is trying very hard- there isn't even a DJ box, with the main source of melody coming from a jukebox.

I took up residence in the dimly lit back area, where the cheerful waitstaff promptly took my order of a blood orange hot chocolate made with almond milk (!) The drink came out frothy and light, with a cloud of chocolate-dusted milk foam atop subtle, smooth chocolate. No bitter or artificial aftertaste. While bopping along to the background music and working on my laptop, I was informed that Leaf would close early at 19h instead of 20h, so I seized the opportunity to order dinner as well: the jerk lamb rump, and an order of jasmine pearl tea. The waiter helped me verify that the lamb was free of dairy, and soon I was chowing down on succulent roast lamb and garlicky roast beans. The mango jam was a perfect accompaniment to the meat, but I found the coconut/coriander rice too mushy to my taste. It helped me to imagine them as mashed potatoes instead, haha. The tea was sensuously fragrant, and I welcomed the scented fog clouding my glasses. I wish I could have stayed there longer, but I might return for brunch or tea - Leaf is truly a serene, wonderful establishment.

As I was in a rush, I wasn't able to check my order but, I asked the staff member serving me, "Is everything I ordered in the bag?" as it seemed small for what I ordered. The staff member replied, "Yes, it is all in the bag.". I believed her and drove off. I only realised when I reached my destination that the box of timbits and all the sauces were missing. Honestly, terrible service, as this isn't the first time my order hasn't been correct via drive thru. Otherwise the food is delicious and location is OK.

It also had a drive through and the website says it is open 24 hours, however, i can not vouch for this so i shall just assume its right. I decided to go into the branch, as i needed the toilet, so didn't try the drive through. On first arrival it looked very nice, lots of glass, lots of natural light, lots of space and it wasn't anywhere near to capacity. Considering it was after midday when i visited, this was a good thing. The store was very clean, I got served and finished very quickly and got everything I wanted to get so this is all good. Its a very nice store. If i was to have any criticisms about the store, my only one would be its location. the mile drive down from the Manchester arena wasn't the best, its one of those where (not meaning to offend) I made sure my windows were up and doors were locked. Lots of store openings which seemed dodgy as the smaller shutters were up and were probably selling niike clothing (as in knock off, wasn't a mis spell). However when i was inside waiting for my brother to order, i noticed a Deliveroo rider coming in to collect an order, so when i can finally move up to Manchester, i would more than likely just get someone else to bring it to me so I don't lose a kidney on my way there. its a nicer store than Bury and a lot bigger but I would probably go to the Bury one more due to the surrounding area. I ordered the french vanilla (which I'm still not 100% sure what it is .. so gonna say its a hot choc) and i got the reindeer doughnut, the maple cream and the iced topped crueller. All very nice

The decor is still quite homely however the seating is still very close, to a point where my friend could not even sit opposite me due to the narrow gap between the chair and table. Embarrassment set aside I went to grab some menus to find there was none. I was informed by a waitress that I had to read off the wall..so for ease I took several pictures of the menu to enable my friend to browse with ease. The menu was limited, I mean when I think of breccy I imagine eggs to be present at the very least. But no this was eggless, baconless with just options of toast, avocado, and nothing inspiring really..also there were NO PRICES. Walking up to the till I was acknowledged by a grumpy guy. Perhaps he needed a Smile latte. Anyway I ordered a cold brew along with the avocado on toast, paying extra for some additional smoked salmon. After choosing what fresh bread I wanted, he slapped me with a £12 bill.. I was gobsmacked.. Returning to my seat I reassured myself " This is going to be the best avocado on toast ever". So the cold brew arrived with a fresh piece of orange floating in it. It was pleasing to note that the brew making is still top notch. Now the food itself.. this arrived on two pieces of toast, half a pear sliced on each piece with a sliver of smoked salmon. This was dressed with a light mixture of chili and lemon. My friends beans and toast was deconstructed, she had to make it up herself...this was I think £6-8 ...for beans on toast.. I found my victuals tasty enough but could not justify the price, £5.99 would have been more realistic at best. Anyway overall the service was poor, the lack of important details such as no physical menus, napkins, prices, inquiries if the food was okay and lack of logical seating. I might pop in for a coffee to take away but this I doubt.

Not for lack of custom, there were people dotted around, but they were all alone, reading or laptopping, and everything - was - silent. My companion and I found ourselves speaking in whispers while we awaited our order. Perhaps it was study day. This particular review is based on two items, one of which I didn't experience. Or at least experienced by default thanks to an occasional satisfied food noise and I myself being fed delicious morsels of sundried tomato from the ciabatta which encased... you guessed it... a meat sandwich. Salt-beef and gherkin to be exact. As you know I don't eat meat, but heck, that bread seemed awesome from the tomatoes I snaffled and my flat-hunting companion was all kinds of happy. Now, we come to the other thing. Thing two. The coffee. The oozing black nectar of the jittery gods. This was my area. I have to say, Engine House, bravo. If you can give me an early lunchtime caffeine high amidst me going back and forth between Deansgate, Castlefield and this little edge of the Oxford Road Corridor no one else sees taking in apartment buildings and living dimensions and kitchen units and such on very little sleep, then I commend you. And considering to eat that sandwich at the table would have cost a fiver alone, to take out, that and the coffee came to £4.50. Takeaway it is! Bonus points for having Anthony Worrall Thompson strawberry handsoap in the bathroom. Did you know such stuff existed? I didn't! Check my photo. It's for reals.
