There have been so many times that i've walked into a 'deli' to find that it is really just a sandwich shop with no 'Delicacies' in sight! When you walk in you're greeted by the friendly and very knowledgable owners - i immediately felt welcome. The shop has a bright little outside cafe with fresh coffee, cake and sandwiches on offer. Inside though they are a 'proper' deli and sell cheeses and meats and sundries which are very different to anything i've ever seen before, but this doesn't really matter because samples of the food are laid out to try so you're not buying blind so to say! I've been a couple of times now and bought myself french bread, a small langres cheese, some salami, a latte and a peice of carrot cake - and by god it was all amazing! Really tasty authentic stuff. This place is a little family run bakery, which is obviously very popular, and is just a little way off the centre (as it were) of Pudsey. It's not difficult to see why they are so coveted, as soon as you go in you are greeted by a super friendly team (I assumed a husband and wife team, but can't be 100% sure) ready to help you. I went in to browse and found myself instantly attracted to their lovely looking home-made preserves sets. The gentleman asked me if I was ok, which I was, and then apologised for having to turn on his mixer for a moment! It was lovely, and really wasn't a problem. As I had wandered in around 3pm ish the shelves were looking rather bare - the sign of a great bakers - and so I wandered to the glass counter at the front. I didn't want to walk out without something tasty. In the end I settled for a beautiful heart shaped chocolate brownie, complete with raspberry in the centre, for my boyfriend. It was going to be Valentine's day after all! I'm told that it was delicious, so I'm glad I made that choice. I bought a set of six mini breakfast jams as well, for a friend, and they were totally bargainous. I won't say exactly how bargainous, lest she discover how much I spent, though with any luck it'll be the gesture that counts! All in all this is a delightful place to purchase breads, jams, cakes and any other home made goodies. Just get in early to avoid disappointment!

Whilst the surroundings of the arcade may have faded during the 21 years that the cafe has been in business, the honesty and wholesome quality of the food remains consistent. I have frequented Roots and Fruits on many occasions, usually on an overcast day, accompanied with a good book. It is the perfect place to lose yourself for a couple of hours, away from the frenetic speed of the city centre. Although the decor has aged slightly, this somehow adds character to the ambiance. Their rich, flavourful soups are perfect on a gloomy day. My favourite dish from the cafe is the falafel kebab, served warm with salad, raita and pitta breads, it is absolutely delicious. After eating, I often wile away the rest of the afternoon with a Darjeeling tea and a moist slice of cake. Who says procrastination has to be dull. A well-used haunt for dedicated vegetarians and fans of meat-free cooking, long may Roots and Fruits continue.

This time we came however we had to sit outside,the cafe as tables had been booked inside (the people who booked it were 25 mins late and they still kept the table) quite irritating for us but at least they give you ages if you're late! It wasn't IDEAL sitting outside, but actually turned out to be quite nice as loads of people were walking past in fancy dress (we visited on Halloween) so got some really interesting people watching in! The waiter came over and took our order (after we'd deliberated for ages) I had the mandarin jigger and others ordered hot drinks etc. Everything was bought quickly and efficiently, our waiter was so lovely when we took ages to decide our food too! I eventually decided on the nachos, complete with salsa, coconut sour cream (!!!!) and jalepenos! All of it was amazing and so tasty!! I definitely didn't expect the coconut sour cream (vegan of course) to taste so good but it was great! The vegan cheese on top was also great and generally really tasty while also feeling you were being (quite) healthy! After much more deliberation we chose the chocolate cheesecake (all vegan) with a desiccated coconut base- different but very delicious! I have to give this place 5 stars, its ethical, friendly and everything I aspire to in life- really makes you think twice about what you're eating and how you're eating it! Ideal for a quick snack (my kids love the nachos) or a lunch platter for people with a huge appetite or even a cup of tea accompanied by one of a large selection of cakes. Yesterday I had a seafood platter which consisted of king prawns, feta cheese, patchwork mackerel pate, salmon, black and green olives, some healthy looking green leaves (which I didn't eat but was told that they were very nice) and two large chunks of rustic bread. More than enough for two people to share. Patchwork pate is truly amazing and if any of you have ever eaten any of their pates then you'll know what I mean - it is nothing like supermarket pate and I refuse to buy any pate from a supermarket nowadays! A quaint little cafe away from all the busy humdrum of harrogate town…read more.. some of the waitresses i have to say are almost dismissive but the owner and the rest are absolutely lovely so full of hospitality Whilst you are there you must sample some banana and cinnamon cake (it was so delicious I crave it and i can't find anywhere else that does it apart from here) The chocolate cake is also one to try, I haven't yet gone through the whole menu but i can tell you that the egg mayonnaise sandwich,ham and cheese toastie, jacket potato, cappuccino, latte, are top notch (by the way i did not have all this to eat and drink in one sitting!) Now it's not cheap but come on this is harrogate! Oh and it's definitely one for the cat lovers! (there are cute little cat statues and figurines on display for one to see as they eat their meal)

I was enticed by the sight and smell of…read morethe omlettes which other people were eating with gusto. as well as plenty of seating inside there are six tables lined up under the awning outside the window. I appreciated the fact that they let me sit outside for an hour doing Sudoku and watching the world go by, on just one cappaccino. the omlette came up to expectations when I came back, it didn't just say it had mushrooms in. the chips were crisp and hot, always a good indicator of a places turnover and therefore popularity.
