Was here for a conference and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised at this hotel. It is located on one of the major streets of Monterey that feeds towards the conference center, but the area is relatively quiet, so noise really isn't an issue. It's walking distance to almost everything in the area. The people who work here are amazing and they really take care of you! First time staying at the historic Monterey Hotel centrally located in downtown Monterey where the shops and restaurants are close to Fisherman's Wharf. We've stayed in Monterey multiple times at other hotels. We saw this hotel rate was 50% less than other hotels in the area. It's a charming hotel with good customer service. I always call to confirm reservations and discovered our reservation was placed for the wrong date. I think it had to do with the third party website, but they fixed it. There are a few things to contend with as you stay here and you pay for what you get. There is a 3-minute loading zone outside the hotel to unload and load your bags. $30 for valet parking but we decided to park our car in one of the public parking lots over night for $24 each night. The first parking lot recommended on the website on Calle Principal is very small and was all full. I asked the front desk and was recommended to go to the east garage on Franklin and that was much bigger and I was able to find a spot. It's kind of inconvenient but something we were ok with and knew in advance. The room was spacious. It's a historic hotel, so no central HVAC. There was a fan and you can open the windows but I wouldn't recommend staying here when the weather is hot. The bed sheet had a couple of stains on it and I called the front and they brought up sheets right away. Also noticed stains on the lamp shade and carpet floor. There is a small gym downstairs and you can get ice. Although the lights were off and some other light was flashing like in one of those horror movies! Also maybe this was due to COVID but they do not clean your rooms daily and clean them after you leave. If you call them, they will bring you towels and etc. We weren't staying very long, so we felt that was ok. I can see why this hotel gets some unhappy reviews but for us this is just fine. Overall, a charming historic hotel with its quirks. I liked the parlor rooms with the antique telephone. Nice area to read a newspaper. Thanks to smaller hotels like this one, families can afford to have a nice little beach trip and not have to pay $400 a night like at other hotels nearby. read more

Great location and friendly staff. Stayed here three nights as business travel. Location is very, very good. I knew they didn't have onsite parking and while it was not convenient, I stayed here specifically to save my company money and I was able to schlep my bags from a public parking lot. However, the lack of air conditioning (which necessitates opening windows and using a fan) means that the room was kind of stuffy and this made things uncomfortable. Each morning I was awakened early by the sound of the garbage collection from the street. I understand it might be expensive for the hotel to add air conditioning but it would really improve the guest experience. The WiFi in my room did not work well enough to manage video conferencing and the staff recommended using the common area living room instead. The WiFi was still choppy. Based on this issue I wouldn't stay here again for business travel. On the plus side, location was great and the staff was very friendly and helpful consistently throughout my stay. read more

My boyfriend booked a one night stay here on Saturday 6/29/24. I believe he said the room cost less than $400. It's still pricy though just for a night stay. The hotel was ok. 1.The elevator had a sign saying not to hold the door open too long or it will break down. 2. Our room was small and did not have A/C, microwave or mini fridge but we did have a ceiling fan. Apparently there are two type of rooms to book from online. They have historical and deluxe rooms. Deluxe rooms have the microwave and refrigerator. 3. When the ceiling fan was in use, it was loud. We had to turn it off so that we can sleep. 4. The walls are thin. 5. The hotel does not have parking onsite. You can valet your car for $30 day which is what we did or park at a near parking garage/lots. Overall, our stay was not bad. Location of the hotel is great. It's located near many restaurants and only 8 min walk to the Old Fisherman's Wharf. read more

We love staying here at The Monterey Hotel and are coming back Valentine's Day weekend! This will be our 10th stay since 2018. Allison at the Front Desk is outstanding and goes up and beyond the extra miles to want to please us! She is so friendly too and provided us with many restaurant recommendations. We love the location with it being walking distance to many restaurants. Parking can be an issue but we seem to manage. They use to have nice continental breakfasts before Covid but now only provide their guests with coffee or hot chocolate in the mornings. I know there are a lot of 2- and 3-star reviews, but I want to share a bit of perspective, especially for those who aren't familiar with Monterey. This is a small, historic town with a lot of charm, and everything tends to be on the cozier and pricy side. I personally come here every year for the Jade Festival, and I choose to stay here. Let's talk about location: this place is very walkable. Yes, parking isn't directly on the property, but it's literally across the street and only $8 for overnight. Compared to many other hotels in the area where parking can range from $20 to $50 a night, this is a great deal. I called around quite a bit before booking and still chose this one for the value and distance. Is it perfect? No. Loading/unloading your bags can be a bit inconvenient, if the three unloading spot is filled, and the rooms are smaller with no fridge in-room. But here's a pro tip: they do have a designated refrigerator in the lobby if you need to store any food, just ask! If it's complete comfort maybe not. But personally I just need a comfortable place that's not an inn and this personally check my list! The free coffee service runs from 7-9am, and while Monterey isn't exactly known for its coffee, it's a nice touch. What really stood out to me was the customer service. Shoutout to Katie: she was so bubbly, kind, and genuinely helpful. That energy really made my stay feel special. Overall, I'd say the accommodations are around 3-4 stars, but because of the excellent service and great walkable location, I'm giving this place a 5. If you book in advance, you can even get 20% off, which I'll definitely be doing again next year. What an unpleasant experience with this hotel. So many negatives regarding our stay, the carpet in the lobby needs a deep cleaning, needless to say that it's not a good sight when you enter a hotel. Our room was also a big disappointment, although the room was spacious, the mattress was very uncomfortable and I couldn't believe that there was no AC . Instead they put a big fan that was so loud, we couldn't sleep from the noise. I really don't recommend this place. read more

Under no circumstances should anyone book this hotel. We booked a standard queen room for 3 nights and checked out after the first night. There were multiple problems with the room, but the worst were the MULTIPLE piss stains on the sheets that looked so fresh I wonder if they even changed the sheets. The toilet didn't work. A single flush would swirl for hours. No wonder the last customer pissed the bed. The room was also incredibly small and didn't look anything like the pictures on the web site. The entire room consisted of the bed, and two feet of space around the bed and that's it. This property is extremely shady as they also requested us to cancel the booking through the website we used, and instead pay them directly. I cannot under any circumstances recommend this hotel to anyone staying in downtown Monterey. Instead, spend a little bit more and book anything else in the area. read more

THERE IS NO PARKING AT THE HOTEL!!!! THERE IS ALSO NO EV CHARGING STATION AT THE HOTEL!!! There is 3 spots at the curb, both sides of the block for loading/unloading at the hotel doors. Nearest parking is across the street and a half a block up City of Monterey Lower Parking Lot #7, or the "East Garage" (or the "West Garage") one block down and two blocks over. Lower Parking Garage #7 has a single EV Charging Station with two cords, both vehicles one was actively being charged and the other was COMPLETED, for who knows how long. The "West Garage" also has EV charging station (2 cords). BOTH EV Charging Stations are SLOW CHARGE! (5+hrs 36% to 80%) The rooms (at least our room) have NO AC, had to "sleep" with the windows open (without screens) and put up with everyone driving by, walking by (drunk), plus the hotel sits under the departure pattern for Monterey Airport. Don't even get me started on the trash trucks at 6am, followed closely behind by leaf blowers and weedwackers cleaning up the sidewalks. The bed was less comfortable than sleeping on concrete, despite it being more like a soft box spring. Tub was not as clean as it should have been. One of the outlets in the room was UNSAFE because it was loose, thought we were going to short it out and trip the breaker while we were plugging in and unplugging our phones. read more

On September 1, 2025 at 10:00 PM, I had the worst experience with two staff members. I did not get the man's name but the women's name is Katy/Katie (blonde lady). She was very unprofessional, unnecessarily rude, and condescending our whole interaction. She definitely needs to be retrained in hospitality because her attitude is not suitable for this business; especially someone who works front desk. This hotel will not be receiving any more of mine or my family's business and I will definitely spread the word of my experience to my friends and associates. Very disappointed. read more

If you hate sleeping this is your place. We stayed in a cramped room on the second floor for the whole weekend and kept waking up every couple of hours from the non stop noise coming from our neighbors next to us, the loud floor boards creaking upstairs and the noise from outside. It's non stop. So if you have any anxiety issues, do not stay here. There's only one tiny trash can in the room which was quickly filled. The TV was only a laughable 28inches. There is also no parking as advertised (vallet only on some days) The only reason it didn't get a 1 star was the staff was nice and its within walking distance from everything. Oh and the jacuzzi room has a camera directly facing you, so there is no privacy. read more

Rooms were ok but our toilet leaked constantly from the moment we arrived and despite notifying the front desk, never got fixed. This place was filthy when you walk in the door. The carpeting is stained and ripped, old decor, dirty furniture and non-functioning elevator on historic side. The only way to get to historic side, besides the stairs, is to take elevator on new side and then navigate outdoor stairs to historic side. First room we were in had an armoire that wouldn't open all of the way, making it impossible to get from one side of bed to another. There was only one nightstand with plenty of room for another. We requested to move to another room. Better but still sub-par. Terrible mattress, no chair, no luggage holder and broken coffee maker. Requested a new coffee maker and never received. Bathroom was tiny. Fixtures were discolored and paint was peeling. If staying more than one evening, had to request housekeeping to make bed, etc. Don't expect to sleep late because the seagulls are so loud, you'll be up by 6 a.m. This was more like a transient hotel rather than a historic hotel. Badly in need of remodeling and updating. Historic doesn't need to mean old and decrepit. read more

No AC just a fan left in a corner of our room in a spot where the cord wasnt long enough to reach a plug. Of all the hotels I have stayed in across the world I've never stayed in a room without its own HVAC. When we entered our room we noticed that both windows were open. It did not dawn on us until bedtime when the outside noise was very loud that there was no thermostat. What they placed in our room instead was a portable box fan and portable floor heater unit. When we inquired about the lack of Thermostat/HVAC they indicated it was an old hotel (1904) and they were not able to rehab some rooms. My wife and I had a real laugh at that as a week earlier we had stayed in a hotel in Galena Il where Abraham Lincoln had stayed in 1850 that had all rooms with HVAC. In the hotel room descriptions they never mention this detail or we would have booked elsewhere. Also add to this issue is that the hotel has 25+ pairs of nesting seagulls on the roof that are extremely loud most of the day and especially at 4:30am to 7:30am. Since you had to keep the windows open all night to cool the room, this was a huge disruption to sleeping. The hotel also sits under the approach/departure path of the airport adding to the noise. Pros: The Location is really good for walking to Fisherman's Wharf and lively Alvarado St. The hotel, while dated in appearance, is clean overall and the employees were polite and professional. An iconic hotel in a heart of the old town. It was build in 1917, it feels like Ernest Hemingway will just step in during his visit to Monterey. The hotel is old, not fancy, but very charming. No AC in the old building, it's not renovated and walls are really thin. A lot of the noise from the street during the night. I couldn't sleep without earplugs. Location is great, a lot of restaurants, bars, breakfast places, bakeries and coffee places. It is in a very short walking distance to a wharf. I loved this place and would definitely stay here, but, honestly, cannot recommend it:) read more

The hotel staff are amazingly polite and welcoming. They are the shining star of this hotel. The location is the next best thing. Alvarado Street is right there, you can walk to the wharf, and all of Old Town Monterey. The hotel itself is a budget experience and if you mentally prepare for that, you won't feel disappointed. The staff and the location make this hotel worth visiting again. The bed or the furnishings, not so much. It's clean, but not comfortable. Leaves and trash by front door old coffee cups sitting around. Check in was a mad scrramble as they let everyone check in at 3:00pm.(No early arrival) Parking was non-existent paid to valet park. This is a historic hotel with some beautiful architectural elements, but it is run down. The shade in our room was torn. Windows open only four inches. No air conditioning in the entire building, and no heat! A portable heater is in the closet for use on cold nights. The elevator has a sign posted that warns the elevator will break if the doors are held open. This seems unsafe to me. Our door key-cards failed to work several times; had to return to the desk for replacements. The "breakfast" is bad coffee and a granola bar. At $240 per night, this place is definitely not worth it particularly since our room was so small that there was only 18 inches of walk space between the bed and walls. We stayed here for one night, and for a night's stay we enjoyed the hotel. It is centrally located in the downtown area and very close to coffee shops, restaurants, and only a short drive to the wharf and aquarium. The hotel is quaint, with a lot of charm, and our standard king room was small, but for an overnight stay it was just fine. The bed and pillows were very comfy, and the rooms don't seem to have AC/heating, but we like to sleep in a cool room, so we kept the windows slightly open. Staff was very friendly, check in was simple, and we did use the $30 (a night) valet since we knew we wouldn't be needing our car during our stay, and we didn't want to have to park at one of the parking structures a block or so away. FYI, if you do want to use the valet, you will have to park in their "loading zone" which is not located near the main entrance, this is located in the back entrance and you will see a sign that'll let you know it's the hotel's loading zone. Once you unload your luggage, check in leave and leave your keys with the front desk and they will then take your car to their valet lot. read more

So you have to keep paying for parking in public garages near the hotel for the max duration ( only 9 hours) several times during your entire stay of just a couple of days. Absolutely everything about this hotel was great! Vintage hotel with some of the most beautiful furniture I've seen. The bathroom was beautiful and the room itself was smaller than most chain rooms, but perfect. The staff was friendly and helped us find parking nearby. A half-mile from the Monterey Pier, but a lot of restaurants and food places are closer than that. My only reason for four stars is there's no parking on site -- but free parking at a lot half-block away (overnight). There is a drop-off location at the rear of the building (on Calle Principal). A hotel that very conveniently located in the center of the towns hustle and bustle with nice staff. That's probably the only reason I would give this hotel two stars. I think for the price per night and maybe the fact that we came during a marathon weekend that it just didn't add up. It was around 360 a night. There is no AC or central heating. They do offer fans and heating units though. The deluxe rooms do have a fireplace to keep warm as well. The style of the hotel is very old Victorian and some parts definitely need updating in the rooms like the window shades. They even have a sign on the elevator that if left open too long it could break down. They don't offer complimentary water in the fridge. Shower pressure isn't very strong and the water in our shower was unfortunately running into the other parts of the bathroom. Great location but just the facilities themselves need to be updated. read more

The elevator rattles everytime you get to your floor (pretty scary) also there's a sign that says the elevator will break down if the doors held open too long...again, total red flag. The water pressure is non existent. Their breakfast consists of fruit and coffee, so don't rely on that. Honestly we felt like the hotel wasn't as advertised on their website. This hotel is perfectly placed for eateries and things to see, in Monterey. My mom and I easily walked everywhere we wanted to go. There is no parking, so you need to park at a nearby garage. The one we parked at was $12 per entry/max per day... We didn't have much interaction with the hotel staff, so I can't say much there. We were in one of the newly refurbished rooms. My mom loved the fireplace and enjoyed reading on the couch nearby. Yes, you can hear outside street noise and people in the hall, but it is an older hotel, so you should expect that. Turns out they gave our room away and put us in the quarter where Quasimodo would sleep. Please do not come here, it's filthy, very outdated and just not worth the savings or the location. If I had an establishment especially one that is struggling I would want staff that work this hard excellent hospitality! The hiring manager is doing something right. Hotel is one star though! I wanted to like this place. Unfortunately our "weekend" two weekday away from the city was ruined because of the hotel not having air-conditioning, not having proper ventilation, not having proper system for parking cars, and the extremely loud noise from outside. let me give you more detail. the number one thing the hotel needs to do is get air conditioning the rooms are very hot I think our room 423 was about 110° the first night I barely slept at all I was given two fans as requested but I still couldn't sleep because it was so hot. this is. in the "newly renovated side" Then 5 AM the garbage man was doing recycling and the recycling / garbage continued for three hours! when I mentioned and I said at least tomorrow will be better they said no it's every day of the week! The hotel should start taxing the city for noise complaints. I live in a very loud area and when i tell you this was excessive noise! unlike any other. also I'm wondering why is there no air conditioning is the city involved in that too like they didn't give them permits for it or something I'm unsure but there's no way that you can have a hotel that that's hot and then have such a loud recycling service outside and you can't even shut the window! The second night they moved us to an inner room without amenities so we went from a very hot room that had a refrigerator and a microwave to an inner room with no refrigerator and no microwave no view. And because I didn't sleep the first night we ended up going to bed early the second night so we didn't get to enjoy the town as we had planned on going out having a nice dinner and going to bed later on our second night but we were too tired to do so. in addition on our second day we asked for our car to be brought around from valet and the city gave us a ticket!!! I was told by one a staff not named that rarely happens maybe twice a year but then neighbor room told us that they got a ticket as well! we still paid for parking! and one of the staff asked me to call to deal with the ticket (name not mentioned) after saying Im not willing to deal with it on my own time staff handled it. I do hope that management can figure out the air conditioning and it would be nice to be compensated for two nights there. Maybe stay at a better sister hotel or get two nights in a cool room with amenities. read more

No one is on the same page here is the most annoying issue. Also the rooms remind me of a Harry Potter basement shack that smells like a 109 year old grandma passed away in last week.
