My boyfriend booked a one night stay here on Saturday 6/29/24. I believe he said the room cost less than $400. It's still pricy though just for a night stay. The hotel was ok. 1.The elevator had a sign saying not to hold the door open too long or it will break down. 2. Our room was small and did not have A/C, microwave or mini fridge but we did have a ceiling fan. Apparently there are two type of rooms to book from online. They have historical and deluxe rooms. Deluxe rooms have the microwave and refrigerator. 3. When the ceiling fan was in use, it was loud. We had to turn it off so that we can sleep. 4. The walls are thin. 5. The hotel does not have parking onsite. You can valet your car for $30 day which is what we did or park at a near parking garage/lots. Overall, our stay was not bad. Location of the hotel is great. It's located near many restaurants and only 8 min walk to the Old Fisherman's Wharf.

    Urine spots on the sheets

Under no circumstances should anyone book this hotel. We booked a standard queen room for 3 nights and checked out after the first night. There were multiple problems with the room, but the worst were the MULTIPLE piss stains on the sheets that looked so fresh I wonder if they even changed the sheets. The toilet didn't work. A single flush would swirl for hours. No wonder the last customer pissed the bed. The room was also incredibly small and didn't look anything like the pictures on the web site. The entire room consisted of the bed, and two feet of space around the bed and that's it. This property is extremely shady as they also requested us to cancel the booking through the website we used, and instead pay them directly. I cannot under any circumstances recommend this hotel to anyone staying in downtown Monterey. Instead, spend a little bit more and book anything else in the area.

No chairs, desk, or ice bucket

Very friendly staff however the "standard room" is extremely small. No desk or chair which makes eating or doing work hard if you dont want to worry about getting the bed dirty. They dont even have an ice bucket to keep beverages cold. It feels as if I am in a bedroom as opposed to a hotel room. Ive never been in a hotel room this small. Extremely tiny TV and the doors where the TV is located dont even stay open on their own. I had to put things to hold them open. Probably wont be returning to this location again.

This place was filthy when you walk in the door. The carpeting is stained and ripped, old decor, dirty furniture and non-functioning elevator on historic side. The only way to get to historic side, besides the stairs, is to take elevator on new side and then navigate outdoor stairs to historic side. First room we were in had an armoire that wouldn't open all of the way, making it impossible to get from one side of bed to another. There was only one nightstand with plenty of room for another. We requested to move to another room. Better but still sub-par. Terrible mattress, no chair, no luggage holder and broken coffee maker. Requested a new coffee maker and never received. Bathroom was tiny. Fixtures were discolored and paint was peeling. If staying more than one evening, had to request housekeeping to make bed, etc. Don't expect to sleep late because the seagulls are so loud, you'll be up by 6 a.m. This was more like a transient hotel rather than a historic hotel. Badly in need of remodeling and updating. Historic doesn't need to mean old and decrepit.

    Room HVAC offering.

Of all the hotels I have stayed in across the world I've never stayed in a room without its own HVAC. When we entered our room we noticed that both windows were open. It did not dawn on us until bedtime when the outside noise was very loud that there was no thermostat. What they placed in our room instead was a portable box fan and portable floor heater unit. When we inquired about the lack of Thermostat/HVAC they indicated it was an old hotel (1904) and they were not able to rehab some rooms. My wife and I had a real laugh at that as a week earlier we had stayed in a hotel in Galena Il where Abraham Lincoln had stayed in 1850 that had all rooms with HVAC. In the hotel room descriptions they never mention this detail or we would have booked elsewhere. Also add to this issue is that the hotel has 25+ pairs of nesting seagulls on the roof that are extremely loud most of the day and especially at 4:30am to 7:30am. Since you had to keep the windows open all night to cool the room, this was a huge disruption to sleeping. The hotel also sits under the approach/departure path of the airport adding to the noise. Pros: The Location is really good for walking to Fisherman's Wharf and lively Alvarado St. The hotel, while dated in appearance, is clean overall and the employees were polite and professional. The beds and bedding were very comfortable.

The hotel offers a nightly happy hour and musical performances. During our visit we had the pleasure to discover a highly talented artist by the name of Adrea, who has the most incredible voice and presence. We were so impressed by her and were very fortunate that she performed both nights of our visit. It was a performance we would have gladly paid to see, she is a rising talent for sure. I can't state how exceptional our experience was to enjoy the music in such an elevated atmosphere, relaxing by the fire, enjoying the outstanding craft cocktails by their highly talented mixologist. Schooners is not to be missed, the food is as outstanding as the ocean view! A special mention to the superior customer care provided by Pracha, a guest service manager at the hotel, who is an absolute star. This was our second time staying in Monterey and I had been looking forward to staying at this hotel someday. It was everything I imagined and more! The service was exceptional from the valet to the bellhop to registration and restaurant staff. We are also IHG elite members and we were given a room upgrade with a thoughtful card and gift for our anniversary. Our room was facing the ocean on Cannery Row with a balcony. It was a very nice, spacious and clean room with alot of thoughtful attention like providing refillable water bottles, robes and an amazing Nespresso machine. There was also a wine bar and snacks available for purchase. The hotel had a wonderful scent throughout and we enjoyed walking through the ocean vibes staircase featuring a jellyfish. Definitely look for that! We loved having our anniversary dinner at The C Restaurant, but that will be another well earned review on it's own. However, we did have two negative experiences, one was that we waited a bit too long for our car at the valet once and there was an accidental spa charge on our receipt when checking out. I still gave them 5 stars because they rectified it right away and even removed the valet charge for us, which was much appreciated. I would love to come back to this hotel someday to bring my parents and we hope you love it too!!

Toddler Notes for the Hotel: [[ Pro's ]] 1.) The room we got on the 3rd floor corner was very spacious and had a ton of room. We were able to set up a pack and play and still had a generous amount of room left to walk around. 2.) Blackout shades and see-through shades for double coverage which keeps the room nice and dark at night. 3.) Location is great as it's super close to Cannery Row, lots of restaurants, and Monterey Bay Aquarium which was our ultimate destination. 4.) Parking Garage is free and decently sized and can fit a mid-size SUV with no issues. It will get tighter if you have a humongous full-SUV though (see pictures). [[ Con's ]] 1.) So Many STAIRS. Like legitimately, there are so many stairs. I took a ton of pictures to give you an idea. Stairs coming down from the elevator, stairs between floors, etc. This is not very young kid friendly when you have a stroller, a bunch of kid items, etc. I'm not sure I would stay here again due to the amount of stairs and inconvenience. 2.) Noise Level - If your kid is sensitive to noise, be prepared to have a ton of sound machines because you really could hear a ton of things. Cars, honking, other people's rooms, etc. 3.) Shower - It did seem a bit rusty in certain places and our shower wouldn't drain so there was a big puddle the whole time we were showering. The steam also set off the fire alarm like another person mentioned. Quick conclusion - I think it's an okay IHG hotel but not very good for families with young kids. Good for the location though.

We only tried breakfast at the restaurant but it was great. The serving sizes were huge. Definitely could have split one plate between 2 people. Even the kids meal was a large portion size. I will say however, that this is not the most accessible hotel if you have a stroller or wheelchair. The lobby has an accessible lift (the entrance is at the bottom of a small staircase), but we didnt know this when first walking over. So I spent a few minutes walking around the property trying to look for a way to get my stroller and 2 kids up to the front desk. The lift is also pretty narrow. I have a tandem double stroller so I was able to fit, but I dont think I would have been able to use the lift if I had a side by side double stroller. The only other way to get up to the lobby is to go through one of the elevators in the parking garage. But if you didn't park in the garage, then you'd have to walk your stroller (or move your wheelchair) into the parking garage and then use the correct elevator to get to the main lobby. Having small kids, this was just more inconvenient than anything. Not the hotel's fault, but just not a great fit for us at this time. I am grateful that they have multiple elevators throughout the parking garage so that you dont have to walk all the way across the property to use the elevator. The hotel was also recently renovated, but the attention to detail just wasnt there. One of the towel hooks in our bathroom was hanging off our wall, the light in the hallway was crooked and was very wobbly, and there was a panel that was supposed to covering the wires from the phone that was kinda just hanging loosely. Not a big deal for us, but just things that we noticed that could've used some work. Overall, not a bad hotel, but the stroller accessibility was just not a great fit for us as a family with young kids.

So either housekeeping was being dishonest about finding it originally, or they're being dishonest about changing the bedding between guests.) And now, after nearly a month of waiting, calling, and emailing, the kindle was FINALLY mailed. My initial review still stands. What an incredibly disappointing and frustrating experience. "Disappointed" would be an understatement. Booked one night (using points) at this property and really wish we hadn't. Was charged a mystery $50 fee at check in. Then at checkout we asked what it was for, the guy working the front desk didn't have a clue and he tried to say he'd fix it "when the computers were working again." When we called his bluff by saying we'd come back in an hour, it was magically fixed. Shady! The room itself was meh... the floors were strangely sloped/didn't feel level. The real kicker here: there was no bedside table on my side of the bed (an inconvenience in itself), so my kindle was placed on the bed with me. I unfortunately forgot my kindle on the bed and didn't realize until we had checked out and were hours away. We called the hotel and were told they didn't find anything in the room. I know for a fact it was left in that room (I've double triple quadruple checked my luggage and there's no where else it could possibly be). Again, SHADY.

Between the ocean views, cozy spaces, and local touches, it really captured the spirit of Monterrey. And then there were the ghost stories. Whether you're a believer or just love a good tale, they add an extra layer of fun and mystery to the stay. If you're someone that believes (or not), go to the front desk and ask for the "book".
