My first exposure to Mockingbird was during the Yelp Instameet at the Custard Factory where I learned about the venue with a backstage tour. I've since stopped by three more times and I love it more each time than the last. The Mockingbird opened roughly two years ago as a cultural arts theatre and cinema with a focus on community events. In August 2015 the venue was taken over by the former proprietors of the Sunflower Lounge's kitchen. A refurbishment has since made the venue look bright and fresh, with an expanded bar and full kitchen. If you don't venture down to Digbeth often there are two good reasons to visit Mockingbird; the delicious food and the classic movies on screen. The bar and kitchen portion of the venue is a destination for me any time I'm in Digbeth. Located in one of the inner courtyards of the Custard Factory, opposite what used to be Alfie Bird's, you'll find some of the best American inspired burgers and sides in the area. The menu is reasonably priced, with their vegetarian burger with fries hitting the £8 mark. The cuisine may be down home and dirty, but this is the kind of grease I can support. The bar excels at cocktails of all types, and stocks a pretty good selection of craft beers. Traditional ales and craft beers range from local (Indian Brewery, Sadler's) to international (Sam Adams, and even a lager from Iceland). The 100+ person theatre is currently set-up with a commercial grade projector and screen, with a fidelity that is perfect for dvd quality films from the 1980's and before. There are plans in the works to upgrade to a cinema quality digital projector in the near future. For now, Mockingbird is concentrating on classic movies at reasonable prices. A screening of 'Big Trouble in Little China' cost £3 per person. On some nights the Mockingbird concocts a special cocktail for the movie. These can be added on to the ticket price for £3. A showing of 'The Thing' featured a 'MacReady' themed cocktail that was out of this world. A special screening of the Blues Brothers hosted a live band that played before the movie, at intermission, and afterwards. Fresh and inventive ideas like this are creating experiences at Mockingbird unlike what you'll find at any other cinema in Birmingham, while their food menu provides a destination not only for cinema fans.

Really great space with poolside table and chairs as well as food, drinks and an independent theatre showing local films and cult classics the mocking bird is a win win. Drinks are a mix of cocktails, draft and bottles at pretty standard prices with the welcome addition of sliders and sharing plates. If you are looking to watch a film in Brum, get food or have a drink in the interesting areal of the custard factory this place is a win win

First time at the Mockingbird was absolutely fabulous!! Seth S. and I got tickets to see The Thing for event cinema. Included with the ticket is a movie-themed cocktail - The Thing cocktail was a red looking Jim Bean mixer. The Mockingbird were hosting a luau party for a local business at the same time so they had some fun coconut cups. I was curious and asked about the coconut cup and the bartender served up our two cocktails in them. So cute. We got to the theater about 20 minutes before the start of the movie and wanted to order some food. I got a side of mac n cheese and Seth got some sweet potato fries. The food was taking a little longer because of the luau foods. The Mockingbird staff are incredible! The guy in charge of the theater helps make sure people are inside before starting the movie. He personally set us up with two special seats in a box in the back and brought our food out during the movie so we wouldn't miss anything. I felt like we were back in Portland at a McMenamin's cinema. The theater seats are really comfy and the drinks and food are great. Mockingbird have a fantastic selection of movies and other arts performances. This is definitely one of my favorite venues in Birmingham.

Went here on a Saturday lunchtime with a friend. We came here having been put off by the queue at original patty men, but ended up being very satisfied with our meal. We both went for the 'pig and blue cheeseburger' - smoked bacon, gorgonzola cheese and pickle on a handmade patty. I was actually Really impressed by this burger, it wasn't greasy, you could tell it was handmade, the bun was fresh and the toppings tasty. I was also impressed by the home slaw which was nice and sweet. This was £8 for burger, chips and slaw. The service was friendly, it wasn't busy and the music was good. We got 10% off using the Birmingham Independent card which bought our meals plus a beer and a cider to less then £20. Brilliant value. I like the atmosphere of this place and the events they put on look interesting. I'll be returning!

The Mockingbird Theatre and Bar is a great addition to the Custard Factory. Long held as a hub for independents and creative types the Custard Factory was on a bit of a decline until recently and the opening of Alfie Bird's and The Mockingbird are hopefully just the start of a massive upward trend in the quality of places here. The Mockingbird, as a little independent cinema, shows cult and classic movies (most of which are free, with a free coffee) all through the week including double (and triple) bills so you can while away your day checking our some classics on the big screen. Yes, the quality isn't up there with some of your big name chains but these guys are just starting out and their ethos is just right. A cinema run by film lovers for film lovers. The bar is where the 'bird shines. One of the cheapest bars around with a pint of cider setting you back less than £3, the coffee is spot on and only £1.50 and as I've just spotted on Stoo. P's review there may be a kitchen there soon so you won't have to run over the way to another venue to get some eats. You can also hire the 100 seater theatre for your own private screening of whatever you want and the guys at the Mockingbird are always up for hosting new events.

I have walked past this venue several times, but this Thursday was the first time I had popped in for a drink. It is quite dark inside, but this adds to the relaxed vibe I think. The bar isn't massive and with a group of people sat on the low chairs and then our small group, I think there was a nice crowd for in there for midweek. The staff are great fun too and happy to chat, which is always a massive plus. I had a pint of Carling (there was only Carling and Stowford Press on tap), and it only came to £2.80! This place looks expensive but it really isn't!

*Update* 1st visit: I visited as part of group event. We were given a look around and the owner Alper told us about the business and their forthcoming plans. I like the sound of their business model: to give the customer the best cinematic experience. This includes - themed nights , recent ones include Star Wars and Pulp Fiction - adding live elements to films, Whiplash with real drummer - providing a great bar & food experience, so you can talk film like Woody Allen after the performance too Well, we tried the coffee and it was quite special. Look out for Blues Brothers with a live band next month 2nd visit: Date nite! Brought my wife to '10 Things I Hate About You', neither of us had seen this rom-com before & gladly she didn't take the film's title to heart. There was a good vibe in the bar area beforehand, the drinks were good, but we didn't try the food. Oddly there was no menu at the table, I think if there had been I may have been tempted. The theatre was about half full, everyone seemed to enjoy the film, there was plenty of laughter. The seating is comfortable and the sound and screen quality was fine. My 1st cinematic experience was really good and we'll certainly be back.

Thanks for looking after our group with drinks and the tour of the theatre. Can't wait for the horror nights!

The only reason I'm giving four rather than five at the moment is because The Mockingbird is not just a bar and bistro- it's an arts and events space also. As I haven't experienced that side of it I can't really give it 5 stars! However, the food and bar are fantastic. It looks friendly and welcoming as you walk into the Custard Factory, with big windows giving you a clear view in. I love the big letter lights announcing where you are! Lots of wood and bare brick walls. There is a brunch and dinner menu displayed on the wall and put up on twitter and facebook. These both change regularly which is nice. We went along on a Saturday night. It was busy but comfortable. We had cocktails which were great, strong and a bargain at two for £10. We ordered at the bar but a staff member did come over to ask if we needed anything else and to take drinks orders. We were also able to set up a tab. Onto the food. I went for jambalaya. A humongous bowl of rice, beans, spicy sausage, peppers and onion, topped with cheese and fresh tomato salsa. I loved the freshness of the salsa with the comforting cheesy jambalaya. A bargain at £8.50 too. Edd had a burger topped with avocado, bacon, blue cheese and duck egg. It was pretty giant but he loved it- a great burger. We were really impressed with the food, but that's hardly a surprise from the guys behind Big Papa's!

The Mockingbird Theatre is a hidden gem in Brum located in Digbeth. Head down and grab some drinks and food before catching a cool movie. They usually have themed movies which is cool so would recommend checking out what they are showing beforehand. We tried the veggie burger (a sweat potato burger) with fries which had a really nice seasoning (maybe paprika?!) and slaw. I would recommend trying the strawberry lemonade - perfectly refreshing mocktail. After the yummy food you can head through to the boutique cinema hall; we were watching the classic 80s movie, The Breakfast Club (awesome film)! You can take treats and drinks into the cinema which makes the experience even better. The seats are super comfortable and spacious. Also a shoutout to the staff who are really friendly and cool - thumbs up! I will definitely be keeping an eye on future events happening at The Mockingbird Theatre as it sounds they some pretty cool things coming up. The owners are all about great cinematic events and creating a unique viewing experience for example they had a live band play during one of their movies - how sounds cool does that sound!! So all in all a five star experience all round for this awesome independent cinema hall - look forward to visiting again! Note to self - definitely book the two premium seats at the back!!!

I have been into the Mockingbird Theatre and Bar a few times, but visited for a actual chilled out drink (read not work related) for the first time yesterday after popping down to Eye Candy Festival to check it out. This venue hasn't been open long (possibly about 6 months) and is perfectly located in the centre of the Custard Factory. It has a medium sized theatre/cinema space out the back of the venue and a chilled out bar area at the front. It's painted in dark colours and feels classy, without being at all snobby or intimidating. I love the logo for the venue. Like a phoenix on fire, it's bright and vibrant and definitely in-fitting with the cool vibe of the Custard Factory. Inside the venues bar area is a mix of sofas, tables and bar stools - so a great spot for grabbing a drink with friends. Last night, we grabbed a couple of pints of cider (Stowford Press at the bargainous price of £2.80 per pint) and chilled in the venue for around an hour. I had no idea the bar was so cheap! Carling/Stowford Press £2.80, double spirit and mixer £3.50 and soft drinks at £1.50. Probably the cheapest drinks around the Custard Factory. The venue has regular film screenings (free to attend) and the theatre space has a focus on community theatre. I have also attended a social media conference in this space, so it's well worth keeping an eye on what's going on via their website. Another great hot spot in the Custard Factory. If you haven't been yet, check it out.

This is a hideous excuse for a cinema. Not my first bad experience here neither hence my review here. Spoke to the Manager and his response was "what do you expect on an opening weekend?" SERIOUSLY?? What a stupid response!! Well let me inform you... I expect you to have a proper queuing system which is fair and tended to promptly and professionally, I expect a dedicated service by staff members serving me with a little sense of sympathy for all the ppl waiting and getting late for their movies through no fault of their own. Which other cinema do you have to turn up over 1 hour before the movie in order to wait in a long queue whilst watching others form their own ques, it defeats the purpose of paying in advance online?! I WILL NEVER ATTEND THIS CINEMA EVER AGAIN!! The manager (an older asian guy with whitening beard in a suit), didn't care for his name tbh, made a bad experience worse with such a stupid response, standing around like a lampost, atleast a lampost provides light, much more useful than you. This was after I had already called for him before the movie started and he walked off pretending to be busy. Poor management and sick of the service. Will be telling everyone to avoid. Don't waste 3 hours of your life like I had to. People work hard for their money and if we spend it we have a reasonable right to watch our movies with comfort and ease. There are much better cinemas local, will be sticking to those. I stormed out of the cinema after the silly basic response from the Manager, he needs retraining or moving to the toilets, maybe he can be of some use there, however i doubt it. An insult to the Vue name unless its how Vue is training their staff?? The people of Birmingham deserve better, its not good enough and needs to change immediately. Or close your doors. Let a proper chain like Odeon do things properly, even on opening weekends, what a joke of a manager!! #Disgusted #Rude #WorstCinemaInBirmingham #useless Manager #neveragain Ps. I've toned my feelings down compared to how I'm left feeling after this atrocious experience. Could say alot more. Please close your doors Birmingham Vue!

The ticket prices here are higher than other cinemas with the standard adult 2D ticket costing over £10 and IMAX costing a whopping £16.20. There is no box office at this cinema meaning that tickets have to be purchased from automated machines (card only) or the snack counter. Although the cinema was not busy by any stretch of the imagination, I did have to wait a substantial amount of time to be served as there were only one or two members of staff serving (both tickets and refreshments) at any one time. There was the usual selection of snacks available and we ordered a large popcorn to share. There was also a small Costa Coffee in the entrance area which served a great range of coffee and treats. The actual theatre was a nice size (if an unusual layout) and the seats were very comfortable. Everything at the cinema indicated newness which was a nice change from the other well used multiplex's in Birmingham. The screen was the perfect size and the volume level was set just right for a children's film. While we did enjoy the film, the cinematic experience was in no way outstanding. Taking into consideration the higher ticket price I am left only able to offer four stars.

So.... I tried. I tried once and I tried again and the Everyman still hasn't quite won me over yet…read more After the initial launch, I booked tickets to go and see Avengers in April for a bit of a date night treat with Dan G. As the cinema specialises in bringing food to your seat, I figured it would be worth heading down for a spot of dinner and a film on a Thursday evening to give this place a proper try. Firstly, I do love the layout and vibe. You're welcomed into a smart, stylised bar and eatery area and invited to take a seat before your film. You can order food before the showing if you would prefer or order for delivery during the film. On our first trip we flashed our tickets (on email, rather an a paper ticket system) and headed to the bar to order a couple of burgers and beer. I went for a veggie burger and Dan went for a smoked. This with a couple of beers came to around £30 (which was incorrect as per the website and seemed to be quite pricey - especially for drinks), still, we duly paid up and headed to the screen for a punchy extravaganza of superhero proportions. The food was bought out to us during the adverts and bought out to us on a tray (so you can pop it on your lap). The burger was really atrocious. I couldn't taste anything at all! Considering it was packed with all kinds of lovely veg - this was a total shame. The seats were comfy enough (every seat at the Everyman is a sofa seat), but as Dan has pointed out - the sound didn't seem to be great (which was another disappointment). Following this visit I got in touch with the Everyman to tell them about my experience (I would have spoken to the manager on the night, but the film didn't finish until nearly 12pm and I was shattered). Their customer service was top notch (that gets 5*) and I received an email reply stating that they would update their website and offered another two burgers on the house to make up for our sub-par food on our first visit. We decided to give them another go and visited a second time in May to see Mad Max. We popped in, flashed the email and were offered the free food without any issues. I went for a house burger this time and we just ordered a couple of glasses of water (as it was a roasting hot day and we were parched). The screen we were in a second time (downstairs) was a lot better. Even comfier, more leg room and better sound. This was a much more pleasant screening experience than we had, had previously. The food didn't come out until the film had started (which was a bit of a pain as we had to eat in the dark) and although my burger seemed to be a lot more flavoursome, it was a tad burned. All in all, I would give the venue 3.5 stars due to the great customer service, comfy seating and great screening area downstairs (which has it's own dedicated bar). I am not in a hurry to head back (it's quite expensive for films at around £12 - £13 a ticket) and the food hasn't wowed me yet. Don't let that put you off though! It's definitely worth a visit if you haven't yet been, just be sure to keep in mind that the drinks are quite pricey. I would recommend it for a date night or a treat, but for an everyday cinema experience I would probably head elsewhere.

It reminds me of the cinemas back home: lots of screens, an Imax, big theatres etc. I purchased the tickets online because I could save about £1 per ticket if I registered for their online club. Tickets were more expensive than Odeon, but this place let's you book seats ahead of time. I really like that feature because I'm one of those people who arrives way too early just to guarantee a good seat. The location was easy to get to. We didn't even have to go down Broad st or enter the 5 Ways Roundabout. Parking is free at the parking ramp next to the theater (for first 3 hours). Just remember to have your ticket validated. Picking up my tickets was easy as I just used the ticket kiosks. Type in the booking code and you're done! As for snacks, it was a lovely warm day so ice cream was in order. I had one scoop while he had 2. It came to £7.60 which is a bit much for ice cream. We also grabbed a drink and munch box from the snack bar. I thought the cost of those 2 items was extremely reasonable. Our theatre was very big. The seats were actually in good condition unlike the nasty torn seats at Odeon. We had no problems with people in our seats. Once the previews began the projector was distorted. An employee came quickly to sort it out, and it was fixed in less than 5 minutes. The only reason I'm not giving this place 5 stars is because I felt it was odd our movie wasn't fully utilising the wide screen. It had black bars at each end of the picture as if it was playing in the wrong setting. Like watching TV when something isn't wide screen. I mean it's 2015 so the movie should be using the entire screen, that's why they build them so big. So my final thoughts: I love Cineworld. Clean facilities. Great variety of movies and show times. Pretty affordable. I'm even considering getting the unlimited pass because it seems like a great deal for those who love to watch movies. And I think they offer food deals on Tuesday and Wednesday if you are looking to save some quid.
