We ordered the "AGED wagyu tartare" and 650 gr of the "Butter AGED Southern Range Rib-Eye+" for 2 people. Both were delicious! The tartare tasted nice, fresh, beefy, the taste of aioli came through. The crispy chips were also really nice to complement the tartare. The steak itself was so aromatic. I could smell the truffle aroma when I was brought out. The menu said the steak was "Encased in beef dripping butter infused with Bone Marrow & Confit Garlic" - must I say more? Super moist, juicy, aromatic, tender and delicious steak. The crust was really aromatic with all that encasing. But still found a small piece of inner fat a little undercooked, tough and greasy. read more

Fantastic experience. I went here my final night in Australia and had the kangaroo skewer. It was perfection; the meat was perfectly cooked. My sides were also fantastic; I ordered a side of Mac n cheese, and it was creamy and cheesy. The service was also attentive and were proactive in taking care of anything I needed. I wish I went here before my last night because I definitely would have frequented again. Be sure to make a reservation because this place gets packed. read more

I really haven't been that disappointed in years. Overall experience was meh. First , my bad for not checking their menu before sitting down. We wanted to try kangaroo, but it had been removed from the current menu. Our wine was brought to the table in dirty glasses. Both glasses had lint, a hair , and some thing small and white clinging to the inside. Sent them back to receive two glasses that still had lint. After the food arrived, we were only checked on once. Glad we didn't need a second glass of wine or dessert. Empty glass and empty plate sat on the table for a good 15 plus minutes. The table was also so sticky. The upside- the local Pinot Noir for $17 a glass was delicious. The totally new to me, Biltong was tasty and interesting. Biltong is a form of air dried meat from South Africa. Related to beef jerky in that they are both spiced, dried meats. The typical ingredients are malt vinegar, sugar, dry ground chili pepper and cumin. The rump eye, $32, seemed a little tough cutting. The restaurant was full and I was only able to get a booking at 5.45pm for dinner. The server was knowledgeable and made such great recommendations that we had a really lovely meal. His choice of Cabernet Sauvignon to go with the steak and ribs was very good too. It was quite an experience! I ordered up the kangaroo skewer, of course. The kangaroo meat was chewier than the norm of steak meat and juicier. There was a bit of gaminess to the skewer pieces. The kangaroo meat pieces were complimenting with what tasted seemingly like cranberry sauce and I asked for substitute of thinly sliced onion rings rather than chips! It was the most delicious and surprising combo that I have ever had for awhile! I asked for Dijon mustard to add spazz to the meat and it was overwhelmingly savory and indulging! I enjoyed every bite! I got the full on attention of my bartending waiter during my dining here and was satisfied with the pleasantry and wine samples exchanged! Tipped generously (even though there's no suggested tipping in Australia). I loved the cab red wine that enhanced the flavor of the kangaroo meat. I came, I tried, and then I left overly satisfied. The service is mediocre, there was a bug in my salad and the waiter took a long time to change it.there was barely any table service we had to track down the waiters to refill water. The food. Came here wanting to try kangaroo meat, as I couldn't find too many places in the area that serve it. Plus, it was nearing the end of the day and we were too tired to take the subway from Circular Quay to somewhere else, so we opted for The Meat & Wine Co. Seeing another one of its locations by Town Hall, I knew this was a chain but didn't think too much about the quality of the food. This is located below the Intercontinental Hotel, and although hotel restaurants usually scream "FANCY," this was not. The dim lighting and old wooden interiors give this place an intimate ambiance that also reminds me a bit Australian wildlife--almost as if I was dining at a hunter's kitchen. We had the Farmhouse Lamb Shanks and Short Rib Steak. Both were okay--not spectacular or anything. I think the Lamb Shanks were much more flavorful since it was stew-like and had an explosion of spices. The Short Rib Steak was average--I didn't enjoy this too much because the meat was pretty hard to chew. We also had a rack of Kangaroo skewers; I've had kangaroo before (obviously not so fresh), but I thought this was tasteless. The meat was great and tender, either they didn't season it well enough, or it just wasn't enough to overpower the kangaroo meat taste. I did like the onion rings and the Yukon Gold potatoes though. It was a bad idea ordering entrees with a rack, had we known the portions of a rack would be so big. I think it would be enough for 2 people to have their own meat rack as a meal, or maybe even 3. I was a bit annoyed that they asked if we wanted sparkling water as if it was at no charge, only to realize we were going to be charged $8 when the Pellegrino bottle came. Not cool, guys. The service, however, was excellent though--my phone needed some serious charging and they brought a portable charge to my table. Our server, Kate, was funny and told us a lot about how kangaroo meat isn't served as often as we would think. I'm starting to think that maybe I needed a glass of wine. read more

While in Australia, I did want to try kangaroo at least once. Glad I chose here! Seasoned with bush spice, it was not overly gamey. It was moist and flavorful. I paired with the house wine, cleaver and vine. My husband had the fish and chips and enjoyed it. The restaurant was busy and crowded, but the hostess was very kind and accommodating, as was our server. I had the Shorthorn Ribeye and I customized my farm salad with blue cheese and feta cheese. You get a choice of chips or salad with the steaks so the prices are quite reasonable at around $50AUD. I paired with a couple glasses of Pinot Noir and I didn't pay more than $75AUD. I was going to get the NY Steak but after I asked my waiter for recommendations I went with the Ribeye and I was not disappointed. Some parts cut like butter and more on the inside it only took a back-and-forth cut or two to cut another piece off. I would recommend this place for any steak lovers from the states. From my personal perspective, the US has the best steaks in the world outside of Japanese A5 Wagyu which is more like eating butter than a piece of meat from what I hear. Took a few minutes to get another glass of red wine a long with better steaks in the US I give it 4.5 stars. I do recommend this place. read more

Looking for a laid back steak place, come here. The only thing odd is the reservation/seating arrangement. Depending what time you make the reservation, they seat you in areas of it. We had a 630pm dinner time and were first seated next to the window of the cooking oven. As it was too hot, we asked to be seated somewhere else, as the restaurant was empty. They informed us they would have to check as they do it by time and seated us on the out skirts of the seating area due to the reservation time. Odd. Very odd???? Other than that the bone in ribeye that we both ordered was cooked to what we asked for. Both medium rare and juicy. Mines was a bit rare near the bone, which I enjoyed as I gnawed it and my partners at the end. As it was portioned as a large cut of beef, it actually really wasn't, if you don't order starters. Went here for dinner last night and was not disappointed. The calamari is amazing, very light and the sauce is excellent. We had a bone in dry aged rib eye which was once of the best I have ever had. I went here for my birthday dinner and was not disappointed. The staff were great and accommodated the number of changes I made to my booking with ease - even when the restaurant was fully booked. Trying the portuguese chicken for my main, (because I really wanted one of the hanging flame-grilled skewers), the meat was tender; seasoned and beautifully cooked. The surprising thing - this place is not all about the meat. We ordered a number of the sides to share and these were also delicious, (although sides did come with a number of the meals so this was a bit of indulgence). Having been to the Melbourne one and loved it we decided to come here as we wanted to take my friend from the UK for a nice dinner and it didn't disapoint once again. I love a great steak dinner and I was to die for, great quality meat, and perfectly cooked. The pepper sauce is the best I've ever eaten and the crispy skinny onion rings are perfect! They also do a great wine and cocktail list to, the malbec is my favourite. The decor is also great, cosy and inviting with very comfy chairs. I just LOVE this place!! I tried Kangaroo meat here for the first time. It was cooked very well and the server helped pair a fantastic Cabernet with it. I think they could have maybe seasoned the Kangaroo better to get rid of some more of the "gamey" taste. I tried some of my friends filet and I have to say I probably still prefer steak. They also have great tasting platters here as well, one of which came with an amazing pork belly. Overall, The atmosphere was nice. The place had a nice dimmer lighting and nice decor. The bartender wasn't the friendliest but that was offset by his honesty, which I appreciated, and he was quite attentive compared to some of the other servers I've had at other Sydney restaurants. I came here one evening for a special occasion dinner. From everything I had heard and read beforehand, I expected our experience to be amazing. Ernest Hemingway hit the nail right on the head with the line at the end of his first novel: "Isn't it pretty to think so?" When my friend and I arrived, the ambiance was lovely, and the staff was welcoming and friendly. We were seated immediately, and our waiter came over and introduced himself. We told him we'd like to start our meal with bread, and that we both wanted fillet steaks as our entrees; I asked him to substitute mashed potatoes for my chips, and for dessert, I decided to go with the chocolate and hazelnut fondant. The dinner started well enough; our bread arrived; it was super fresh, and tasted wonderful! However, even before I could even butter my first slice, our steaks were brought out! This, after we had specifically asked that the bread be served as a starter :-( Despite the fact that the steaks were brought out way too soon to allow us to enjoy our starter, our steaks were cooked too perfection, and done exactly as we had requested (medium-rare for me, and medium-well for my friend). The meat was nicely marbled, juicy, and perfect seasoned to bring out the flavor of the beef. My mashed potatoes, on the other hand, were awful; they looked and tasted like they had started the day in a can of freeze-dried potato mix. To add insult to injury, my friend had been waiting for around 20 minutes for the glass of wine he had ordered when we were first seated. When we asked why it hadn't come, it turned out that our waiter had finished his shift and left without telling anyone about the wine. In summary, this place has wonderful ambiance, and the food is fairly good. However, the service is decidedly sub-par, and could use quite a bit of improvement. read more

The restaurant is a little dark and you can see the African influence in the decor and the wine selection. It's quite a large restaurant with lots of tables. Centrally located in downtown. I opted for the burger. Being from Texas, I rarely eat steak outside of my state because not too many places do it right and also because I like to try new things that I can't get everyday. The burger was huge and it was properly cooked. The fries or chips were delicious as well as the house salad. My colleague ordered the lamb shoulder and said it was excellent. read more

I only review when there is a definite reason to. Being an American steak eater, I appreciate a high quality American steak and/or burger, but I still can appreciate quality in different parts of the world. Germany and Austria have amazing quality beef, and Australia certainly does as well. But I actually didn't have a steak, so I can't say it was bad. So I can't give this restaurant an honestly low rating, because of that. However, my 2 experiences at this one dinner were: 1) I opted for the burger, and asked for it rare. After 15 minutes, the manager came over and said "Our burger meat is processed, and we only will serve it medium, as rare could cause food poisoning ". Really???? Cmon. An elegant steak house can't have tartare quality beef? They wouldn't even serve it to me medium rare for the same reason. That was a total turn off. I appreciate the warning, but that is disgusting that they won't invest in high quality burger meat. I'm now thinking that maybe I only should order a burger in a high end steak house, only if they also offer steak tartare as well. I2) then opted to take the beef ribs. They were fatty beyond the norm, and I couldn't even finish because of that. I credit the nice red wine for breaking the fatty molecules up in my mouth!!. I gave it a 5-star given the money and the quality of the food. I came to this resultant for the kangaroo skewer, and although I'm not a big fan of super lean meat like kangaroo meat, the dish itself is good: the meat is cooked to medium rare, which prevents the meat from getting too dry. I really like the onion rings and the potatoes on the side. We also ordered a steak, which is pretty standard and tastes good. Three of us went here for dinner - my wife and I, and a colleague of my wife's. The colleague had the kangaroo skewers and liked it quite a bit, saying the meat was very tender. My wife had the beef skewers and they weren't as tender as she expected them to be. I had a boneless ribeye steak, and it was frankly tougher than I expected. We have eaten at a number of higher end steakhouses and expect the steak cuts to be higher quality. On a more positive note, we had the Chocolate and Hazelnut Fondant for dessert, and it was scrumptious. We weren't told, however, that it takes about 20 minutes to prepare, so our expectations could have been managed better. The biggest complaint was the service, which was spotty at best. We had to ask for drink refills, inquire on the status of our food, etc, which I don't expect to have to do at a steakhouse like this. The strangest thing was at one point our waiter was standing next to the table, I thought waiting for a moment to check on us, when I saw that he was instead leaning against a post and using it to scratch his back. All in all, given the cost and quality, I would advise heading elsewhere. read more

There was no problem with getting a table at 3:15pm on Australia Day, and the regular menu (bar one!) was available. We ate Meat and we drank Wine, so the promise of the Company was met. Regrettably the biltong was not available on the menu, so we missed out on the South African specialty. The full rack of pork ribs was meaty and excellently cooked, as was my partner's burger.
