My partner and I were approved for a new apartment at The Markham in Cupertino, managed by Prometheus Real Estate Group. After our application was approved, we let management know that we have Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) and that our updated documentation from licensed healthcare providers was in progress. Instead of reviewing the request or allowing us time to provide full documentation, Prometheus denied the accommodation altogether -- citing the City of Cupertino's two-dog limit as the reason. That was their only explanation. This is not how California fair-housing law works. Under the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA), housing providers are required to engage in an interactive process and consider ESA requests based on disability-related need, not city pet rules. It's extremely disappointing to have a fully approved lease fall through over something that violates state law. We've filed formal complaints with both the California Civil Rights Department (CRD) and HUD. I'm sharing this so others don't have to go through the same frustration. Just had a great experience visiting the Markham apartments! The speed bumps in the parking lot were a little odd but overall the site was tidy and people were friendly. William was fantastic when providing assistance in the office, and was very informative and polite. Definitely makes a difference when the staff greet you with a smile. This is the absolute worst apartment complex ever. My friend Igor invited me to his birthday and reserved the theater. When we arrived and tried to enter, the outside door was locked. We followed every instruction provided by the leasing office staff, but nothing worked. In the end, we were forced to sit outside by the pool in the barbecue area, and it was freezing that day. Avoid this place at all costs if you don't want to ruin your day. And this wasn't the only issue he faced. Moving out was an absolute nightmare. Living at [the Markham Apartments] was an absolute nightmare and the worst experience of my life. The service and management team are terrible. When we moved in, the apartment was dirty with a lot of broken things that we had to wait many weeks for them to fix after repeatedly following up. Despite the poor condition when we moved in, they still charged us for cleaning and damages after we moved out that were clearly present before we even lived there. We were supposed to be able to move out before the end of our contract term, but they are now demanding over $12,000 from us to do so. We had been offered the first 2 months free as an incentive, and I was prepared to pay the $5600 or so in remaining rent, but they are trying to tack on thousands more in inexplicable fees. Whenever we try to get clarification on why we supposedly owe so much money, we receive different answers every time from the incompetent management. They treat prospective tenants well to get you to rent, but moving out is a total nightmare. The bait-and-switch tactics and lack of transparency are appalling. I cannot recommend this apartment complex to anyone based on the deceitful practices and horrendous service we experienced. The move-out inspector told me that the house will be brought down for it's life after 4 years and that I do not need to pay for carpet or cleaning yet the lady from the management, Amanda, kept pressing for almost $200 of carpet cleaning and almost $500 blaming me for a stovetop that was leased to me in that bad state, despite several times of explanations with proofs of data and emails back & forth. No two people would speak the same sentence and absolutely plan to rip-off the tenant taking advantage of the mere location of the apartment. read more

Watch out for large hidden costs. I rented a small apartment mostly for a home office while my house was being renovated. There's a lot of hidden maintenance costs they charge tenants. Including 'standard extras' move-out costs that is charged, regardless how immaculate you leave the apartment or after organizing your own cleaning services. Considering I had only rented the apartment for 5 months and never slept there, it was exactly in the same condition as when I moved in. I had also had the apartment professionally cleaned as recommended by the move-out checklist. However, I was surprised to be charged "extras" anyway, which are additional expenses that Markham claims are used for preparing inspections for new tenants. This includes standard painting that they claim is done after every tenant moves out, carpet steam cleaning, removing fridge & stove to clean the back compartments. I'm not sure how legitimate these charges are and if they are actually done as claimed. Would not recommend a Markham apartment. read more

Update: The management team reached out to me to discuss the move out charges and offered waive the painting and cooktop charges, so I've updated the rating to reflect the stay. Make sure you take pictures of everything before you move in and fill in the move in checklist with as much detail as possible to protect yourself. Beware of unreasonable and exorbitant move out charges and expect many broken things during your stay! I stayed here for a year in a one bedroom unit and overall the stay itself was average, but giving one star due to poor management and move out fees. Pros: The apartment's location was very convenient, easily walkable to Safeway, CVS, and various restaurants. The maintenance staff were always prompt and professional, they would fix almost everything that came up, and the neighborhood was nice to walk around especially with dogs. The amenities such as the pool and gym were also nice and well maintained. Cons: The apartments are all fairly old, and they show their age when you move in. There was a strong cooking odor throughout the apartment when we first moved in, and when we brought it up to the management, they brushed us off saying that we just weren't used to it. We had to file a maintenance request roughly every two weeks or so due to various leaks, broken faucets, drainage issues, or lights going out. Our kitchen and bathroom faucet both broke at some point, and both also leaked during our stay, causing damage and dirtiness to our stuff. The water heater broke several times during our stay, lasting for more than a day sometimes. There were also roaches around the area and we would find them in the apartment at night a couple times per week. The walls are also quite noisy, we could hear our upstairs neighbor whenever they walked around, and there was constant landscaping during the day. Overall this would have been a 2-3 star experience if not for the ridiculous move out charges imposed. We were charged a $200 cleaning fee which they said they charge to everyone no matter how clean the apartment was, so we didn't bother cleaning. In addition, we were charged a $265 fee for a complete repainting despite ordinary wear on our walls and no holes. On top of that, we were charged a $500 fee for a glass cooktop replacement with some light scratches from normal use. The range installed in the apartment looked like it was 15+ years old and could not be worth more than $200 to begin with. read more

It's been about a month since I moved out and wanted to share my experience with Markham. 1. The HOA is good with landscaping. Except they are ALWAYS landscaping. I literally always hear a lawn mower or a leaf blower going off. The best part is, all the shavings go straight into my patio. If you want good sleep or need a quiet surrounding, don't live here. 2. Before you move out, they will do a "walk through" with you, telling you all the fees you are expected to pay. I told them I plan to clean the unit myself. They basically said, regardless of how well I do at cleaning it, if they don't consider it "clean" I am responsible for the total flat cleaning fee, so don't even bother trying. The maintenance manager spent 45 mins walking around my unit with a flashlight showing me how they expect the unit to be cleaned. Even if I hire professional cleaners myself, I will need to pay again if it's not up to their standards. Basically deterring me from attempting to clean at all, and just pay them for a cleaning fee of ~$250. 3. The paint fee. This was the most ridiculous one. They explained it as the "paint life". If it's paint life is 3 years, and I only live in the unit for 1 year, I have to pay for paint to last the next 2 years. What kind of logic is this? So I'm paying for the future tenants, and they have to pay for their future tenants? Also, they told us we could totally mount and nail things on the wall, as normal and tear. Don't listen to them. You also have to pay for the gallons of paint they need to use. Watch out for a ~$350 paint fee. I wouldn't live here again and won't recommend anyone to. read more

When my husband and I first moved into the complex, we were so proud to be residents at the Markham. The management seemed welcoming and friendly and I made several wonderful friends over the past 6 months. We recently bought a new home and we wanted to maker sure we left the unit on positive terms. When we provided a 30-day notice to vacate, the management gave a form and dished out the harshest penalty I had ever seen in my 12 years of being a good tenant in multiple counties. Reading and signing dozens of housing contracts over the years, the initial contract at the Markham never listed a penalty for early termination. Apparently Prometheus assumed no residents left the complex before the lease was up. This group charged us two months of rent as penalty and a full concession (the discount that lured us to the community last year). Who charges a hardworking couple $10K trying to settle in the Bay? The Markham does. :) Anybody who has a heart half the size as normal would empathize that this group is predatory and will take a huge bite out of their good tenants' wallets on the way out. If I had talented, diligent friends who were looking for wonderful lodging options, I would advise them to stay as far away from this place as possible. A representative, Sharlotte, apologized for the delays and promised she'd make sure I get the refund this time. Based on this exchange, her professionalism, and my trust of her sincerity, I've updated this review. I put in a deposit and canceled within 3 business days but I'm still waiting for the refund and it's been almost a year now. The customer service/representative was very helpful and communicative to schedule viewing and quick take my deposit check but not so after I've canceled. I sent them repeated emails but still waiting for that check, again, almost a year later now. I'll try calling their head office and see. I shouldn't have to spend this much effort to get my deposit back. read more

One major flaw - toilets. The piping for the apartment units are all connected and are in terrible working condition. One day, I came home and found an unbearable stench coming from the master's bedroom on suite bathroom. To my horror, the shower stall was flooded with approximately 2 inches of toilet water with many bits of poop in it. When the maintenance guy came, he said my neighbor was experiencing toilet problems too a day earlier. He told us not to use any water, not even in the other bathroom and in the kitchen because any extra water going into the piping would cause more flood as they are all interconnected. Few hours later, the plumber fixed the problem. Apparently, the poop and poop water were from units combined, could be from my upstairs neighbor, could be next door. Two days later, the plumber came again, saying that the next door neighbors were experiencing toilet problems again. Indeed, I heard loud toilet pumping sounds the night before. Fortunately (or so we thought), the unit we were staying was corporate housing and we were moving to another unit within The Markham. So, the new unit had toilet problems again after just 3 days of moving in. The water level in the toilet bowl was high. Maintenance guy came and fixed the problem. While doing so, he got toilet water on the floor. I noticed that the bathroom floor had his wet footprints. Meaning, I had toilet water all the way from the bathroom floor, to the carpeted floors, to the main door. I am shocked that knowing he had toilet water on his shoes, he still stepped onto the carpet. He went out to get some napkins and wiped dry the toilet floor, and asked if there was anything else he could do. I said no because I felt he would only make things worse. I ended up disinfecting the bathroom floors and the carpet all the way to the main door myself. All these happened within approximately 2 months and are a major nightmare which I have never experienced before in any of the other apartments around the area. The Markham may look nicely renovated with granite counter tops and good amenities, but beneath that lies a horrible problem. read more

The worst management team I have ever had to deal with. I lived here for 1 year and had multiple issues come up during my stay here. Let's start out with what I like about living at the Markham. Pros of the Markham... -great location, near many grocery stores and restaurants -well maintained grounds. -relatively quiet, although it is right next to the 280 -amenities (if they are in working order.....) Cons of the Markham.... -First off, within the first few months of living here my water heater broke. The maintenance team tried to "fix" the issue while I was at work but when I got back home they had flooded my bedroom. I will say that they were very quick getting me a new water heater and cleaning up the the water but I still was unable to use my bedroom for a week. -one month, the management team contacted me telling me that they tried to cash my rent check but it was returned and that I would need to pay rent plus a $35 service fee for the returned check. I looked at my bank statement and they had actually charged me rent twice. The first check cleared but, of course, when they charged me the second time it was returned due to insufficient funds. When I called the Markham team back and told them that they charged me twice they came up with the excuse that "you clicked the pay button twice"... which is weird cause I only ever got one confirmation email that my bank account would be charged for the correct amount of rent. I asked if I could have the $35 fee waived as it was my first time ever having any issues like this, never missed a payment or paid rent late, but they said no with no explanation. I was told to contact Olimpia to further discuss the issue. I sent Olimpia multiple emails over a 3 week span and no response.... -When it came time to renew my lease I tried contacting the leasing team about moving to a different unit but, of course, no response... that was the last straw. I really would've liked to stay at the markham as the apartments are in a great location and the complex is relatively quiet and well maintained but it would not be worth the headache dealing with the management. -management also neglected to address many of the residents' safety concerns. **Theft and vandalism were a common issue here. Neighbors posted about getting their bikes stolen or car broken into in the resident portal. The Markham team would reply with a generic response and no extra security measures would ever be implemented. **Markham decided to replace the toilets in ALL units during the COVID-19 outbreak... When residents expressed their concerns and that this is likely not a great time to take on such a big project and putting all the residents at risk, Markham ignored the concerns and decided to carry on with the project. read more

I wish I could give The Markham 0 stars. As you might note in other reviews, they have a tendency to harass you with fictitious charges at move-out. They even had the audacity to enter my unit without prior notice. I had to waste money on lawyer consultations and was going to take them to court before they backtracked. If enough people stand against them, we should be able to bring a civil lawsuit. Pros ==== - excellent central location - good upkeep of common property, it's clean and very walkable - service staff was professional and courteous for the most part Cons ==== - Most appliances never worked properly; service team is prompt but they routinely replace a broken part with substandard parts so it just breaks down again and again. The worst for me was the AC and heater stopped working properly last two years and were never fixed (leaked some toxic gas that caused us all breathing problems, my son has been prescribed a nebulizer; service team just cleans the dust in the air filter and ignores obvious problems like toxic gas that makes you cough or a water leak in the piping outside... eventually the fan started making a loud noise so EVERYONE could hear it). I had to spend thousands of dollars during the California fire season to buy air purifiers, fans and stand-alone heater. If you lived in Northern CA during '20 '21, you know it was basically like living in hell with the above problems. We could not move out due to risk of Covid. In hindsight, probably should have taken the risk. - Walls are paper thin. In our apartment, we could hear the neighbors dryer / washer, dog howling, sound from their TV, children's screams etc. The units are all connected so if you live on floor 2 and someone drops a ball on floor 1, you will hear that noise. Basically you hear everything and unfortunately for us, Covid made a bad problem worse because people started being noisy late into the night / morning. Insomnia it was. - theft and car vandalism is common; we were fortunate to be in a more reclusive part of the complex but their internal forums are filled with complaints read more

They recently put up new mirrors at gym which I absolutely LOVE IT. Thank you Markham for listening to the neighborhood voice. Public areas are always clean. I see ppl always come and clean the steps outside of our room (it's always clean!) And they also repainted the stairs a few weeks ago. The neighbourhood is quiet and peaceful (except in the morning there will be car noises Bc my unit is close to the driveway) This is a dated apartment so things might seem a little old, but they are all working perfect. Great 3 years at the Markham! Enjoyed the proximity to work, amenities, maintenance, easy move-out etc. At the time of move out, they had a cleaning service for a nominal fee. Didn't have to vacuum/clean, which was great for me! Had one snag for scheduling annual cleaners in 2017, but was addressed quickly. Anywhere in silicon valley is going to come with a large price tag, it's the reality. So no point in reducing stars for it. I highly recommend it. read more

The bad: - They straight up lie. They told us that storage was free before moving in and then we were told that we had to pay for it. - Our bathroom counter doors were broken upon move in and broke when we tried to open it which caused my wife to get injured. - Crime is pretty bad. Besides the homeless rooming around, there are many crime incident reported around the area. - If you renew your lease they are going to try to get every cent from you possible. Negotiate, wait until the time is right to get them to reevaluate your lease. They wouldn't reevaluate our price even though there were multiple other apartments opened at a lower price. - Prometheus is sketchy. Very very sketchy. -Apartment are actually smaller compared to other apartments around the area. - They say the apartment complex is no smoking but our neighbors smoke all the time and they won't do a thing about it. read more

Stay away from this property, especially their management team. If you are like me amazed by the convenient location and facility on property, and the "friendly" first time tour, then signed the lease. Welcome to the nightmare of dealing with this shitty management team for the rest of your leasing time. Not mention the package stolen happened to me 3 times and old building with noise issue. There are below dramas which should never happen in other properties. We were encountered change of occupant in the middle of our lease. After consulting with the office with all the materials and charging the application fee with all materials submitted, they never changed a name on the lease. In result, our new tenant was not able to use the online payment system at all. After we tried email, office visit, appointment, phone call at least 10times, they accused us of not submitting enough material. So as in today, the last month of our lease, we still not get name updated on the lease with charged three times 45$ ($135 in total) The management will never communicate with you other than threatening you of evicting or sending your information to lawyer just to blackmail you or shut your mouth off. We were late paying 2 times. First time is we realize the new roommate was not able to pay online also they triple charged the name of change fees. We sent email to them, they replied either pay or we got evicted. Second time is our last month with only 23 days on the lease. They charged us more than 1000$ more and we wrote a email also tried to visit the office 1 day before DDL. Now they are threatening again to send our information to lawyer and the payment amount is still $1000 more than we should pay. We lived there for 5 full years. However, they really disappointed me when I move out. They immediately show differently when you are no longer their customer. In our contract, they are supposed to 'change carpet every five years'. But when we move out, because we kept the carpet so well, that they don't have to change, so they chose to charge us cleaning fee. I double confirmed with Joseph the manager before moving out, he agreed no such charge. Then probably the new manager Rigo coming afterward, and I received a carpet cleaning fee on my final bill, for the carpet they are supposed to replace every 5 years. I got that, you want to save money, but can you just pay the cleaning fee yourselves if you want to keep the old carpet? And when I talk/email with Rigo, he disagreed whatever the previous manager agreed, he said 'he is not here anymore'. But was previous manager spoke for Markham management or himself? And he ignored my later on email, and I could never find him, and he never called back. I am quite dissatisfied with this apartment community. It is already overpriced. Extremely ineffective management. We've experienced three instances of rubery in the last two years. A police report was lodged, but management took no action. This location is not secure. There are numerous strange folks strolling around, particularly at night. If you choose to reside there, ensure that your cameras are placed and that you have double luck your apartment door. I do not recommend this apartment to anyone. They will always quadruple charge you upon departure to ensure that your deposit is never returned to you. Very disappointed. read more

My partner and I lived here from June 2015 - June 2018. This place was just OK. This review reflects the time we lived there. It might be completely different now. Within the first 2 months of living at Markham, we noticed a van heat-treating the unit below us. This would only lead us to believe that there was a bed bug issue below us. We were obviously concerned so we reached out to the Leasing Office through email. She doesn't work at this office anymore, but the Leasing Manager (at the time), Katie Broughton-Pham responded and did not give me a straight answer. When I spoke with her face-to-face, she was absolutely passive-aggressive and rude and I left our meeting in tears. She had a pest expert come in to do an inspection and while he was inspecting, he revealed that the unit below us did indeed have bed bugs. THANKFULLY they were either completely exterminated during the heat treatment, or they never traveled up to our unit. I've had similar experiences with different folks in the Leasing Office. After they power washed the buildings one summer, many of us were wondering if they'd be power washing our balcony floors and wash the windows as all of the dirt transferred to those surfaces. They had me come into the office to "surprise" me with something and they ended up "gifting" me with my very own floor brush so I could scrub the balcony myself. They made a huge deal out of it and acted like it was my birthday and they surprised me with a car. They cheered and clapped. Never in my life have I ever felt so humiliated. The only reason why we stayed for 3 years is because the annual rent increase was not a lot. Maybe $60 increase each time our lease was up for renewal? We also didn't want to have to worry about the stress of moving so we stayed until we found something better. I think the folks at Markham focus solely on the landscaping because it's always impeccable. I must say, they did an amazing job keeping the outside of the units looking beautiful. The inside was nothing to write home about. Maintenance requests were met pretty quickly. The maintenance workers were amazing and worked their butts off. There is no assigned parking so if you want a spot close to your unit, you probably need to get home for 5pm and never leave the house at night. They did not monitor the parking so people without permits could easily park anywhere and not be towed. Moving out was actually quite positive. After reading about the horror stories on here about people not getting their deposits back, I was so stressed about potentially losing ours. We didn't hire the cleaners they suggested (which seems kind of sketchy), we did it all ourselves. We scrubbed everything from top to bottom. Luckily, we didn't lose our deposit but just a heads up, you do have to pay for a carpet cleaning no matter how clean your carpet looks. The person who inspected our unit was very impressed with how clean everything was (we had scratches on the wall but since they paint every 2-3 years he just ignored it). I really hope the staff who work there now are better at their job. I understand how tough working in customer service is but I also know how important it is to stay professional and how kindness goes a long way. read more

We moved from NY to the Bay Area and moved straight into the Markham. We don't regret the decision because this is a great community. It's clean, beautiful and the apartment is spacious. We felt at home immediately. The staff are very courteous and very helpful. The maintenance and service is also very good. The location and the staff makes a big difference. The pool, the clubhouse and the gym is kept in good condition. The only con is that the rents are very expensive and there is a difference of about 300-500$ between you and your neighbor depending on the time you sign your lease. We moved in Aug so our rents were 500 higher than my neighbor who has the same apartment (size, location all same). April - Sep is high and the rest of the year the rents are lower. read more

My wife and I lived here for 3 years and only just moved out around May 2017 (needed to move closer to work). Overall we had a really wonderful experience here and enjoyed living here more and more with each passing year. Here are some of the highlights: 1. Safe, peaceful and family oriented. There were so many afternoons we spent napping with the window open, listening to the birds chirp and children run around outside. I know that sounds ridiculously "Disney-like" but it's true. We never felt unsafe and it was always a pleasure to come home from work or vacation or wherever. 2. Amenities: excellent. Really great gym, really amazing pool (although it could be a bit warmer, even though they'll tell you its heated on your tour there), awesome jaccuzzi (although it does sometimes get overrun by kids or high schoolers, depending on the moment). The BBQ which you can rent for free (with a safety deposit) is also top notch and well maintained. 3. The Apartment: very nice inside (our model had been recently re-done and i think they are all slightly different). The Markham team is very responsive to any maintenance issues at all. In Northern California places can be so expensive for an old unit or house, so even though the Markham is expensive (although mostly it's reasonable for the area) at least you get a really nice, modern and clean place. Negatives: 1. Parking: unless you get a second parking pass (which you have to buy, if that's even an option) parking can be a pain. Especially at night when everyone is back from work and it's all full, you oftentimes end up parking far away from your apartment because you can't park in the covered areas. Unfortunately many people without parking passes do exactly that and the Markham doesn't really do anything to actually enforce it (you might get a little paper notifying you not to do it but I never saw a tow-truck out there). This means that people who don't have a parking pass can fill up the covered areas for people who do have one. 2. It's a big apartment complex- what i mean by this is that this isn't really a place where you can "negotiate" your rent. They have rules they stick to pretty rigidly, although this is part of what makes the place so well maintained, clean and efficient for a large group of renters. That being said, the front office is friendly and helpful. Overall we would live here again and would definitely recommend it to anyone. This isn't a place where big parties go down and the night life around here isn't very much, but the restaurants in the area, the community feel, the peace and quiet of the Markham itself, and the amenities are really worth it and hard to find. As my wife and I are both swimmers, and it is difficult to find year-round lap-pools in the area, we moved to the Markham apartments primarily because of their advertised year-round heated pool. However, we have been very disappointed to find that it was regularly not heated (with the water temperature often dropping to 65 degrees or lower). Towards the end of last summer I had resorted to swim-training in a wetsuit (yes, in August/September, in California). More frustrating is that they have actually closed the pool now for the last three months. They have claimed it is for short maintenance work, over the Christmas holidays, but that 'just happens to be a bit delayed'. Although it was expected to be open by mid-January, it is still closed, and unfortunately there seems to be no sign of it reopening soon. We are very disappointed with this, as a similar apartment without a pool would be considerably less expensive. In essence we are paying for an amenity that we do not have. This seems to be consistent across Prometheus apartments. I have seen the same policy in Spruce Apartments who would ocasionally switch off the heating of the pool. I have been given the excuse that"there was something wrong with the wiring" on more than one occasion. This is an excuse I had also heard a few times at the Markham. My speculation is that they simply want to reduce the energy bill for heating the pool, which is understandable, however it is not reasonable to advertise a year-round heated pool and not provide it. In my experience, other apartment companies in the area do a better job. For example, I have swum regularly in Irvine apartments, both Montecello and The Hamptons, where I found the pool to be consistently heated and always open. For the price they charge for their apartments, you can certainly do better elsewhere. read more

I've been here almost two months and all in all, it's been a great place to live. My unit is not perfect, but it's definitely good, and it's a good value as far as Cupertino goes. The complex is well managed, and the staff and management are all very friendly, likable, and responsive to their residents. They actually care, and they try hard to make you happy. It's obviously important to select the right unit based on your needs. As with any apartment complex, not every unit is right for every person. I'm in an upstairs 2 bed 2 bath unit close to the gym, away from the main street, with ample parking. That's what I was looking for. Your happiness here will depend largely on how well you know what you need and communicate it to the leasing agents before you sign a lease, because they will be honest in helping you find what you're looking for. read more

This is our third year with the Markham and we are very proud to call it home. Despite the quite neighborhood, close to all businesses, and not to forget about their amazing management team!!! I am always grateful and thankful for their team. Sara, Kellie, Joseph, and Kimberly are always provide an excellent customer services and super helpful in time of our need with the most positive and lovely attitude. They will make sure and always remind us what needed to be done as tenant. (Renter insurance, lease renewal, if expires, etc). Special shout out for Kellie. She is been helping us lately with out special renewal lease. She is never too busy and she even make smallest problem a priority. She's very respectful and makes us and Markham communities feel important. She handle our needs very quickly and professionally. We had wonderful 5+ years at Prometheus community earlier at Shadowbrook Sunnyvale and The Markham Cupertino. I always appreciated the professionalism and service of the management. I used to tell my friends it is worth paying a little bit more for these communities.......... until I moved out. The day has come and I gave the 30-day notice as in the lease agreement. Unfortunately, I had to break the lease since we were moving to another area. I was searching for the lease break option in the agreement, but there is none. They muted that point so that they can say whatever they want. Here is the e-mail I received. "We're sorry to see you go! We hope your new chapter is full of opportunity and adventure. We have scheduled you to move out on 11/14/18 as requested, although your lease end date is 02/11/19 (Please make sure to sign and return the attached Early Termination Addendum by 10/29/18 [2 weeks prior to move out] or you will default to Option 2) I have scheduled your Pre-Move Out inspection for the 11/05/2018 between the hours of 3pm and 5pm, as we require a 2 hour window. To help make your move-out easier, we've attached the Move Out Roadmap, also located on The Hub. This document will help guide you through the next steps for move out, as well as cover any potential turnover costs. For instance, the "Cleaning Specification Sheet" explains every single item that must be cleaned thoroughly. Although you have the choice to try and clean the apartment yourself, we do not recommend it as it can be very difficult and time consuming to get the apartment as clean as the day you moved in. In fact, sometimes the vendors we hire may miss something on the list and we will require them to come back and clean the home so that it sparkles just as yours did when you first moved in. We have noticed some neighbors may try to hire someone to clean their apartment but the results still do not meet the same standard of cleanliness of when you first moved in. Also, more often than not, the price our vendors charge is lower than what you will end up paying if you hire someone yourself. If you do decide to hire someone to clean, please let us know so we can inspect their work before they leave to make sure they cleaned every item listed on the "Cleaning Specification Sheet" thoroughly. Nicely drafted e-mail, but read it carefully and you be the judge. Hmm, I was so stressed out by seeing the charge. By God's grace someone(God bless you) rented the unit at a higher rent ($3180) and I was so happy. I was checking their website at least 10 times a day to see if someone rents that unit. When I checked at the office, they said that the person might back out. They were suggesting me to take option #1 which will give them $6k. I stayed with my option and the person moved in on the availability date posted on their website. So now management wants me to pay an additional 6 days rent (The time they took to clean and prepare the unit) on top of deep cleaning and carpet replacement. These are the final charges. Renewed our lease last week because nothing in the area compares to the Markham. The cleanliness, spacious apartments, and prompt service from team members make this place one of a kind. They have taken our complaints seriously, and fix things in a timely manner. The clubhouse, gym, and pool are incredible. You're close to Safeway, and yummy restaurants. So, nothing's changed. It's only gotten worse. When our lease expires on May 26, they are raising our rent by 400 dollars. You read that right. 400. And they think they are being nice, because if they put us up with the going rate right now, they'd have to raise it 622 bucks. This apartment is NOT worth 2000. Our fridge freezes stuff in the back. Our oven is off by 50 degrees. It took them over a month to solve our rodent problem. We don't have A/C or new appliances or a W/D or granite countertops or stainless steel stuff. Our apartment is old. The only thing they've done is paint the outside and gave us new balconies with less privacy. We're outta here. read more

I am a current resident and just gave my 30 day notice, I've lived here for a year. This place seems nice when you first get your tour however the construction is unbearable. Since moving in they've taken away our carport, our FRONT DOOR, SHOE CLOSET, as well as storage. 60 days before our lease was going to end I HAD TO CALL THEM TO SEE WHAT'S GOING ON, they told me that I wasn't able to renew my lease because my apartment is going to rennovations but gave me no option or incentive to move into another apartment in their complex. When i found another apartment and gave them my 30 day notice they were more inclined to keep us and reduced the rates dramatically. The management is disorganized and unattentive, except for a good fellow name Raul (he has always been kind to us and accommodating, as much as he is allowed to be) however the new manager is a total douchbag. We initally came to him about our request to transfer however he gave us outrageous rates, saying there is was no other price available. Where was my incentive to tranfer if you're going to jack up my rent 300 bucks because YOU GUYS ARE RENNOVATING!?? No common sense! After we told them we were leaving they told us they can work with us. They try to be a high end complex but in reality, they really don't have their *ish* together. Kids run around unattended and the hot tub, gym, and pool are always filled with kids. For the same price, go look at another apartment. Very disappointed in their lack of customer service or quality. PS--from the outside the nicer apartments are priced at 1500 + for 700 sq foot and for the crappy/old ones, they are priced at 1295.00. Seriously---not worth your money. To add, the walls are either thin or not well insulated and the upstairs neighbor is always noisey. People walking their dogs don't pick up their waste. They actually called me telling me that I don't pick up my dog's waste --how do you know who's dog waste it is?? My dogs go to work with me everyday so how could I not pick up my dog's waste?! I am not one to discourage you from moving in, this is just my ACTUAL experience with the complex. We never complained about any of loud noises or contruction or loss of space or storage but when we moved out I complained about the lack of organization or communication about the apartments rennovation. They advised that they we not "obligated" to notify me because they were not breaking our lease, we just weren't allowed to renew. I told them it's common courtesy to tell your tenants "btw, you have to move out of your apartment because we are rennovating". Their response is "well you guys decided to purchase a home instead of moving in an apartment so you guys should be happy"." My final response to them was "honestly we are purchasing a home instead of moving into another crappy apartment and having an bad experience, but it doesn't justify the lack of customer service. My husband and I had a wonderful stay at the Markham for nearly a year. It was the perfect landing pad while we were in transition from a cross country move. We would've stayed had a larger floorplan been available once our lease was up! The staff is kind and attentive, the landscape is impeccable, it's wonderful for pet owners and we found the community/neighbors to be supremely caring and conscientious. Having a Safeway, Starbucks and small park right next door is such a win, and there's also Mary Dog Park just a two minute drive away.
