The Marketplace has a whole bunch of breakfast and lunch options with those farm-fresh ingredients that make you feel good about going out to eat. Wraps and other sandwiches were the stars here, but I didn't feel limited by the choices. $5.95 for one piece of fried chicken. $14.99 for a small Mexicali salad with chicken. I spent $38.00 at this cafe and sat with yellow jackets swarming in the patio area. This is the second time I have been to this cafe and I am done with it. The cashier is always unhappy. The cook seems to be a cool guy. I don't know who is hiring and managing this place but it needs some pricing advice and some managers. read more

We're always exploring new food options here in the Berkshires. We decided to try out the Marketplace Cafe in Sheffield, particularly since it has fairly good Yelp reviews and their Specialty Foods counter in Guidos is pretty good. We made two takeout visits for lunch over the past month. The first time, we had the Shay's Rebellion and the Bartholomew's Gobble. We asked for mayo on the side for both, and both were delivered drowning in mayo. Into the garbage they went. Strike 1. We were 10 miles away when we discovered this and we were not going back, so we emailed them to let them know about the problem with our $24 order and they ignored us. Strike 2. OK, they blew that order so let's give them another chance. This time, we ordered the BKT and the Maggie May, the first without mayo and the second w/mayo on the side, and like idiots, we drove away without checking. A half-hour later at riverside, we unwrap and BINGO, the BKT is drenched in mayo. I tossed it and shared the Maggie May with my generous compatriot. We both agreed that it was uninspired. Another email, and ignored again. Strike 3, yer out! So, two trips, 4 sandwiches totaling $48 with 3 orders wrong and 1 edible but uninspired, they ignore contacts, so nope, never going back there again. Oh, and they might think about smiling once in a while ... there's a dark funk among the staff out front ...smiles are as rare as mayo on the side ... maybe that's why they can't get orders right. read more

Looking for a good lunch after working up an apatite hiking Hurlburt's Hill at Bartholomew's Cobble on a fine late autumn afternoon. The Marketplace Café filled the bill... We went with a "Batholomew's Gobble" and an "Ohh Mexico", plus a chocolate croissant for dessert. Service was reasonably quick and the staff and customers seemed to respect "Covid spacing" adequately. We ate at the small tables out back. Had a back alley feel and overlooked a remodeling job but was OK for a quick lunch. The sandwiches were made with fresh ingredients with generous proportions and tasted great. The croissant wouldn't make me forget a fine French bakery but was fresh and buttery. All and all a good experience. read more

Spent a weekend in The Berkshires and beyond the beautiful scenery and quaintness of the place itself, this little cafe became an integral part of our adventures. It was the first introduction to the town when stepping off the bus and then was a must-stop every day thereafter. The little salads in their makeshift deli "case" are fantastic, especially the quinoa/edamame one! I loved the roasted chicken with toasted garlic skin, which went perfectly with the pumpkin bisque soup. Ahhhhh, fall! Speaking of, the pumpkin spice latte was a rich, frothy delight on a crisp day. The veggie sandwich/burger was a dynamite ending to a weekend's worth of home-cooked bites! The gents hustling behind the counter are super friendly and lovely to banter with while waiting for your goodies. I always love getting food here, I typically get the Bartholomew's gobble or the Shays rebellion. the pastries are fantastic too, I just had a home made pop tart that was so darn tasty. The owner happened to remember me which is surprising because I have an absolutely terrible time remembering people haha. I guess I'm just not good with faces, so Hi! Good to see you! Food: top-notch. I've been here many times everything is awesome. There's huge variety to the menu there's something for everyone, and the staff is great at guiding people with dietary restrictions. More people should try this place for Sunday brunch, I highly recommend the Sunrise Over Quito. Btw, mimosas and sangrias for brunch, too! Drinks: standard, although with a high-end flair. The lattes taste similar to ones you would find elsewhere, but their coffees are carefully selected so coffee connoisseurs will have plenty to rave about here. EXCELLENT espresso. Parking/traffic: Good. Ample parking down a quiet street, although there isn't great signage so drive slowly on Main Street or you'll miss the turn! Also, this place is very popular with locals so it can get pretty crowded at times. But they have a lot of seating (outdoor, too!) and are quick with sending out the food, so there's usually a place to sit. Free wifi so great for studying/getting work done. Staff: The friendliest around, seriously. All of them are very knowledgeable and hospitable, and usually take a moment to have a real conversation. read more

After a Berkshire hike with my dog, this patio was a lovely luncheon respite for a maple kale salad. Freshest ingredients, creative menu. They serve custom dinners weekly and post the selections on the counter for the coming week. This is a definite a block off the main path treasure when in western MA. read more

Meat on sandwich tasted spoiled. It was really disgusting. Tasted like dog food. After a few bites, I brought it up to counter and told this old blonde woman working that the meat was old/bad, and she was incredibly rude to me. She actually argued that there was nothing wrong with it. Was quite embarrassing, even my colleagues were shocked that she treated me so disrespectfully. I had another sandwich made, then she came and basically threw the plate down on my table and walked away. The experience was so awful we all agreed never to eat there again. It's overpriced anyway. Later that night I was sick and I'm sure it was because of the few bites I took of that sandwich. If you want a good sandwich, drive a few minutes down the road to Great Barrington Bagel Company or Mom's Country Cafe. Roberto's Pizza in Sheffield is also amazing. Stay away from Marketplace unless you want to get treated like dog and sick like one, too. read more

I wish I could give 2.5 stars, cos 3 is too many and 2 is too few, but I'll err on the side of being less mean :-) We ordered a Spicy Eggplant Wrap (note: that's what it said on the board, but online menu says 'spiced' - spicy & spiced are 2 very different things) and a French Onion Grilled Cheese Panini ... neither was that bad, but not great either. The wrap wasn't 'spicy' - probably due to being 'spiced' - I think it had some generic Indian type mayo (described as punjabi sauce), and I don't recall much eggplant in it - a lot of chickpeas & greens. The panini was basically a couple slices of regular bread put under a panini press with not a lot of filling. For nearly $10 I was expecting to be able to see & taste cheese in every bite. The French Onion taste was good though. I think as I read this & think back to eating, it's really just that it was over-priced & I know I could've made those same ingredients taste better... but overall it was 'ok'. read more

I did a yelp search while in Sheffield and found this gem. I had a huge party with me and they were really nice about it. All the food came out hot and they called me up to grab it as they made it. Which I love. The christmas cookie latte was good. I also did a yelp check in so I got a free tea. I loved the sweet biscuit, which is what I got. It had a sweet crust. I would get that again and maybe another one for the road. read more

I love this place. I visit here at least 6 times a week for either delicious morning coffee, lunch, or take out for dinner. The food is real, authentic, and they use better ingredients than can be found in local stores. Only better than the food is the staff. They get to know you, take a personal interest in their customers, and will have conversation (imagine that). Must haves: coffee, burger specials, wrap with no name (add chicken), and any of their specials. Would have an easy 5 stars if I ate breakfast (folks rave about it) and if they had some accessible sandwiches (plain ham and cheese on white) for kids. They don't - it's a sophisticated menu. The food from the marketplace Café is amazing, but I am less than pleased with the bakery. I wanted to order a cake for my daughter's birthday. It was expensive, but still at a competitive price. However, they wanted $10 more to put raspberries on it. I was fine with paying that because fruit is expensive and it is not a part of the usual cake. But then they wanted another $10 to put some freaking icing roses around the bottom of the cake and another $2.50 to write "happy birthday," which I found to be both greedy and petty. When I complained about it the employee, who was actually very nice and polite, she explained that it's a, "custom cake. " Ridiculous argument; all birthday cakes are custom cakes. Needless to say, I ordered my cake elsewhere and will not be going back. read more

I am a Sheffield resident and I can't believe it's taken me three YEARS to write a review of the place I haunt. I love the Marketplace. I love the delicious breakfast burritos I love the chicken salad on a salad I love the espresso I love the soups, especially their clam chowder and their hearty meat chili I love the brownies and other sweet treats I love that each server has his/her own Pandora station (all, save one, of which I enjoy!) I love the patio I love the wifi I love their line of house-made chocolates I love that I have a place to take my out-of-town guests to that never let's me down and always does me proud. But most importantly...(drum roll please) I LOVE THE SERVERS AND THE SERVICE! I read one review here that said, "four stars for food but only one for service." It's funny how opposite my feeling is about the staff. I actually, truly, LOVE them. I know most of their names; most of them know mine; they know how I take my coffee and how I like my breakfast burrito (gooey with that avocado crema and an extra bit of chorizo!); I tease and flirt with them, they tease and flirt right back with me; they ask me how I'm doing and actually want to know. I don't know what their vetting process is for their staff...but whatever it is...it's working. Yes...the service can be a WEE bit slow, and the order line can take a bit of time...but you're in the country for god's sake! If you want super-fast service go to Manhattan. Chill out...take a breath...enjoy this lovely oasis in Sheffield. read more

I just popped in on a drive with my family through Pittsfield. Cozy little place with a little music playing in the background. The servicewas quick. I got the Maggie May with chicken and apple smoked bacon and tomato aioli while while my girlfriend got the Oooh, Mexico which had pepper jack cheese, guac, and chipotle aioli and I thought that one was amazing. Both sandwiches were built well and came with a pickle and we split the chips and a cookie. I was very satisfied with our purchase and left full. The food is very good and fresh, but a bit expensive for what it is. I was surprised to order a turkey, bacon and avocado sandwich and it came with very little turkey almost no avocado and nothing on the side, no handful of salad or pasta salad. It seemed a bit plain for the cost. Although there were 3 employees working, most of the tables were dirty and the napkin dispenser empty. The woman at the register was unfriendly. The register/counter area is so overcrowded with items its hard to know what anything costs. I would give this place 5 stars based on the taste of the food. But they seriously need a very good food manager to re vamp their register/paying process and navigation of the little seating area. This same restaurant in Pittsfield has a much better lay out. A little re modeling could go a long way here. read more

The food here is definitely not worth the trip. My coworker and I got lunch that involved meat and got very sick. The day prior I had ordered a pumpkin spice latte that tasted like medicine in a cup. The staff is very nice however, that does not make up for the horrible food and the sickness that comes after. If you are looking for a quick pastry to satisfy a sweet craving with no other options then MAYBE, if you are willing to take the risk. The inside is decorated nice but definitely NOT WORTH IT. I love this place. Food is consistently great, though a tad pricey for what you get portion wise. Cheese sandwich was thin but very tasty. The soups are hearty, and I usually call soup a beverage, not a meal, but I have to put them in the meal category for this place!! always four choices also!! When we got there I stepped out of the truck I arrived in and fell flat on my back slamming the back of my head on the frozen ground. I felt ok after the fall and the stars dissipated, and reported my fall to the manager, who was very nice. Today I feel like I fell off a tallish building. At 60 plus years, I no longer bounce when I hit the ground. Sand the parking lot! It was so slippery getting to the front entrance, every time I took one step forward, I slid back 2 steps. It was so slippery I had to turn around and make believe I was going back to the truck to get to the front entrance! Today it only hurts around my head, face, chest, neck and shoulders. Now, I do enjoy the place but there was this female of the opposite sex in there hacking up a lung every minute or so. It was disturbing, as who the hell wants to get sick from eating in a public place. She disgusted me when she literally blew her nose into her shirt inside and literally cleared her passages with her finger, through the shirt!! Gross doesn't cover it! She was just sucking up their bandwidth and drinking coffee. Now this is at lunch time mind you, taking up space, not spending money and hacking all over us. A large group came in and sat next to her, and after 5 minutes, when some other customers left, they moved as far away from Hackey McPhlemington as they could get. Trust me, I'm biting my tongue here, and not really telling you how I really feel about this situation. This person had no Couth whatsoever. If that was my restaurant I would ban her! I hope she's not a relative of management, but it would explain why she wasn't asked to leave!! Too many elderly people in the area, and yes I am including myself, to be spreading disease. I have enjoyed this place since its opening a few years ago. The food is exquisitely prepared from the freshest local ingredients. The hamlet of Southfield itself is very charming. I wouldn't give it five stars for one reason- the service. It has become a victim of its own success. On weekends the kitchen cannot keep up with demand and food often takes a LONG time. I'd suggest you save your visit to a weekday and avoid peak times like Sunday brunch. read more

The Marketplace Cafe is tucked away on Elm Court, just off Route 7 in downtown Sheffield. A small black sign marks its location, but blink and you'll miss it. Having worked in Sheffield for almost two years, I've been to the Marketplace on several occasions. It's a really popular spot; every time I've been, it's been packed with people. But then again, this is Sheffield, and it's the only place to eat lunch . . . The main draw to the Marketplace is its selection of sandwiches, but they also offer dinner specials and an assortment of desserts and specialty coffee. They support local and regional brands, like Tommy's Naked Soda, which gives the place that crunchy granola vibe so typical of Berkshire businesses. Most recently, I tried the grilled cheese of the day with a tomato. For $6.42, I got a huge sandwich packed with cheese on challah bread. It was at least an inch thick, probably the largest grilled cheese sandwich I've ever had. I'm not sure what kind of cheese was used, but it didn't taste like it was cheap or of low quality. I think there was also mayonnaise spread on the sandwich, which is an interesting touch for grilled cheese. Unfortunately, the sandwich wasn't hot when I picked it up, but I can't blame the cafe for this since I called in my order pretty early. Of the sandwiches I've tried here, I think the grilled cheese is definitely the best. I've also had the city boy wrap (back when I ate meat), and although it was good, it was sloppy and drippy and was messier than it was worth. I've also had the hummus and apple wrap, which is really good, but it left me with stomach pains after I ate it, so I can't really recommend it. The worst thing about the Marketplace Cafe is the customer service. The people behind the counter are very friendly, but the service is incredibly slow. Even at the busiest points in the day, there is only one person working at the cash register. When I call in an order for pick up, I'm waiting at least 15 minutes to get the food I ordered once I get to the cafe. This is not because the food hasn't already been prepared; it's because I have to wait in line behind the other people who are still placing their orders. I think the Marketplace would be a lot more efficient if they had two lines, one for people placing initial orders, and one for people who are just picking up something that's already been ordered. And if you haven't called in your order in advance, just forget it. You could be waiting for a half hour just to get a sandwich. On top of this, the interior of the Marketplace is small, so only a few patrons can eat inside. There is some outdoor seating, but of course, it's weather-dependent. If there was another lunch choice in Sheffield, I would never go to the Marketplace simply because their lack of efficiency is irritating. With all of that in mind, I'd give the Marketplace three or four stars for the food, but only one for the customer service. As good as some of the food is, it's not worth the wait or the hassle. read more

This cafe could be a great little foodie place - it has all the makings. We enjoyed the one in Great Barrington about a month ago. That location raved about the flagship cafe in Sheffield. The Sheffield one was mediocre - we stopped in around 6pm close to closing time. That may be the reason it was not so good? But the side dishes are the size of a tablespoon and overcooked or stale. Best sandwich spot in South County, hands down. Fresh, local ingredients, large menu, Something here for everyone. It's a little on the expensive side but I think that's justified by the quality of the food. They catered my wedding as well, and really did a great job. I stopped in on during a day trip up to MA back in December. It's located off the main road, somewhat hard to see, but not being from the area, I still managed to find it. The cafe itself was rather plain, yet welcoming and cleanly. Customer service was average, not remarkable. What was memorable however was the drink that I had. BEST HOT CHOCOLATE EVER! It was absolutely incredible. The flavor of it was subtle, similar to hot fudge, but somehow it was mildly sweet and not overly thick or sugary. It was light and rich at the same time. I don't recall the name of it on the menu (it had a cute sounding title, as many of the drinks and sandwiches do here) but hopefully it is something they serve year round and not just for the holidays. It really made my day and it was cheap, around $2, because it was on special that day. If I'm in the area again I would definitely stop back to have another. Maybe two. read more

This place is hidden off of the main street in Sheffield. I am sort of happy about that, as it is a great find and does get crowded, so it is the sort of place that locals want to keep for themselves. Great sandwiches, delicious and interesting sides, and altoghether a fun place to stop in for lunch. As others have said, the grilled cheese is good, the chicken salads nice, the sandwiches are interesting combinations. Okay, the servers get a bit overwhelmed at times, but that's forgiveable considering the quality of the food. You can also find some of their dishes (like the wonderful risotto cakes) at Guido's market down the road in Great Barrington. read more
