Nothing special about it but the food is good and they have one person working the front of the house and boy was she on top of everything from the service to busing the tables. Food is pretty terrible and greasy, but if you're expecting it to actually be quality you need to reevaluate. I love garbage Chinese food in all shapes and forms, so I come here often. The waitress who works there every time I go in there is always rude and consistently tries to memorize my order and inevitably messes it up because she didn't write it down. Even when she does write it down you probably will need to remind her to bring you something you asked for. Come for the greasy egg rolls and duck sauce that tastes like strawberry jam, stay because it takes the waitress half an hour to bring your check after you're done eating. The food is good and reasonably priced (especially the lunch special). Sesame chicken is a go-to. Taste of Nirvana is great if you're a vegetarian. My family and I have lived in Oberlin for the past 10 years, and have always enjoyed the Mandarin. I find it a little weird that there are so many negative reviews, when I've never once been disappointed with their food or service. After walking through an odd hallway, the doors opened into a living room sized restaurant. It was mostly empty. We were seated quickly and looked at the menu. The staple dishes for all Chinese restaurants were ordered. California Roll, General Taos Chicken, Mongolian Beef, and Beef Fried Rice. The California Roll was quite good. The General Taos was good. Good cheap American Chinese food. As per Oberlin's standards there are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. I highly recommend Taste of Nirvana! I don't know exactly what's in it but it's vegan, fried, and delicious. The lunch portions are still quite big and they're only about $5 so it's a much better deal than dinner. read more

My family and I visited this establishment this evening. We began our meal with 3 bowls of hot and sour soup. My wife and kids all complained that the soup didn't taste very good. I tried the soup and agreed that something was just not right. We informed the waitress and she removed the soup from the table. We then received our meal and when we were finished, she brought our check to the table. I noticed that we were being charged for all 3 bowls of soup. When I inquired why we were being charged for the soup, she stated that the owner would not take it off the bill. I replied that I wasn't going to pay for it and she stated that she would pay the $7.50 because "the owner will make me pay for it." I asked to talk to someone as the owner had left for the evening, so the son came out to speak with me. I explained about the soup and he said that "because it came to your table and you tried it, you pay for it!" I wasn't angry about the $7.50, but the way that I was treated by some little boy. I then said I wouldn't be coming back and he replied "if that's the way you feel about it!" The restaurant business is about hospitality and taking care of the customer. This kid was so adamant about getting the $7.50 now than ensuring that the customer would return future business. Very sad! The short of this review is this: the restaurant is in a dirty little building, the restaurant's door is in front of two dirty and smelly bathrooms that are not cleaned frequently, the restaurant is dingy and dark with an extremely odd off pudding odor, mediocre food at best, and owners that treat you like garbage. There are better Chinese food restaurants out there with management that cares about you as a patron than what you can stuff into their personal "fortune cookie". Decent Chinese food in Oberlin. The vegetarian options tasted delicious when I tried it but the meat options could've been better (about the same as Too Chinoise). Sushi is decent but can't complain because there are limited sushi offering in the town of Oberlin. Portions were huge and prices were low. Good, decent take out. It's actually much better than you might think based on the looks of this place, which is its major drawback. It's a terrible location and they've done nothing to enhance the interior either. Dingy and very ugly space. That's why I emphasized "take out" even though you can dine in. I have visited many of the dining facilities around town and I will have to say the Mandarin Chinese and Japanese restaurant is by far one of the most affordable and delicious restaurants to dine in (or carry-out) at in town. The Mandarin restaurant has a beautiful array of chinese art and paintings within the restaurant that give it an authentic oriental feeling and the music thats played adds to the authenticity of this restaurant. The wait staff and owners are very personable and poliite to their patrons. Now to get to the meat of the review "the menu"....Mandarin has a mix of chinese and japanese items ranging from sushi to numerous chinese dishes (may I suggest the Szechuan green beans AMAZING!!!). I have tried many of the dishes available at this restaurant and have never receieved any platter that I would not deem beyond satisfactory. Overall the mandarin's platters are delicious and also well presented, their price range is very fair and the staff is freindly and professional. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for a great meal at a reasonable price! read more

DO NOT GO! The restaurant will charge you more than what you've signed and written on your receipt! They assume that you will not notice some dollar difference until you realize they actually do! My uncle and I met here today to plan a surprise birthday party. The food was delicious, the service was lovely, and everything went fine until the end. A middle-aged Asian woman (the owner?) gave me a takeout box for the remainder of my meal, and I requested a to-go cup for the remainder of our hot tea, as it had warmed me up and I knew it would just be thrown away. She informed me I could not take the tea. Confused, I said Okay. She informed me the tea was free with the meal and is not to-go. Realizing I had offended her, I again said Okay. She then indignantly informed me that otherwise everyone would just come in and take all the tea. She then walked quickly away and ignored my protest that I would never do such a thing. I'm not sure why it was so offensive for a paying customer to ask for some tea that instead went down the drain, but I certainly won't be coming back to a restaurant where I was so rudely treated. read more

Don't go here unless you have a lot of time on your hands. The food is okay, not really good but not really bad either. But the service is terrible. I have ordered there 2 times in the last 3 years and have highly regretted both times. I ordered for pickup and both times they told me it would be ready in 25 minutes. Showing up after 30 minutes I continued to wait another 30-45 minutes...both times!! The only reason I waited both times was because because they collect your payment the minute you walk in the door then completely disappear. Terrible. read more

the quality has consistently gone down. I used to be able to stomach the general tao's but last time it was as if they shredded the spicy peppers into it and it was hard to eat it was so hot. This time today I ordered sweet and sour chicken and paid dinner pricing and received 2 small slices of green peppers like 2 chunks of pineapple and on top of that the onions and green peppers werent barely cooked which to me is disgusting as they should be cooked all the way through. My gf broccoli is never cooked correctly anymore either. They just don't seem to care anymore I don't understand how lunch is $5.50 and dinners almost double you don't get barely any more. Also order two different kinds of rice if ordering more than one meal as if you order the same rice for one person they only give you half as much as they would if you ordered white and fried.i'm trying somewhere else from now on and I used to look forward to going to the mandarin........... read more
