This is a family own business that I have loved for years. When I first moved downtown this was my area and my friend and I would always go there for coffee dates. They also had this little library which was so cute to offer at the coffee shop. I also love the little chandeliers they have for decoration. It gives it such a nice vibe. The people who work there are always really nice. I love their lattes and their beans are wonderful. If you like a dark roast like me to bring home, I highly suggest the Liquid Night. read more

All the seats were taken aside from the student desks (I don't want to enjoy my coffee in a classroom seating!) or that armchair right by the window... This place serves the midtown of TO. It is a bit of the main transit line so I guess it caters to the locals. Interior is nice cappuccino is not. Kudos for having one of the coolest password I have heard in a while. The space is nice. It's warm and inviting. But, there are several drawbacks. For starters, they claim to have the "best Americano in town". Not only is it not the best, it's barely any good. It's pretty close to warm brown water. This is a prime example where overselling yourself can backfire. Second, the place is very dark. It seems they rely on the large front window, but really it's not enough and you end up with a very dark room. You can't read or do any work here. Third, the place gets a little crowded and noisy. There's music in the background, but it's so faint and gets completely lost in the chatter. Fourth, they seem to have some jewellery and other arts and crafts for sale. It seems a little bit cheesy for a coffee shop. I know I'm nitpicking, but when it comes to a coffee shop you are selling coffee and an ambiance. It's the little things that make a big difference, and if you can't seem to get either the coffee or ambiance right, then you have to make some adjustments. read more

A small and cheerful coffee shop with free wifi and bagels. The price point is low, the people quality is high, and the ambiance is what you'd expect if you were at a similar location south of Bloor. I had a green tea, but the man running the joint takes a lot of pride in their americanos, so if coffee is your thing be sure to try one. On a nice day, they have some School style seating just outside with those one sided tables just enough to put your textbook on. Lots of outlets for those with Laptops as I notice even the staff here were using theirs in-between customers. Maybe the bench seating is the way to go? The Mad Bean is a small charming coffee joint west of Eglinton. The warm atmosphere created by the super friendly staff and cozy artsy interior can put anyone at ease. I love their deep red brick walls, sparkling chandeliers, cool music playing in the background, interesting art up on the walls, and bookshelf with a variety of books. I find it interesting that this café sells books, jewellery, art and knitwear. They also have live music, events and free WiFi. Mad Bean has an extensive list of espresso drinks, coffees, tea, smoothies and cold drinks such as Italian sodas and more. They have flavored shots available that include sugar free options. For those who like almond or soy milk, it's free! Besides the beverages, they do have bagels, sandwiches and a variety of baked yummies. I always get the smoothies here, even in winter; their just that good! They are all super fruity, blended beautifully and healthy. My favorite has to be the berry smoothie, it just bursts with flavor. The americano's are strong and well-balanced and pairs perfectly with their baked goods. There's no shortage of places to grab a cuppa joe in this neighbourhood...Starbucks, Second Cup, Hotel Gelato and Phipps are all located within the same two blocks of the Mad Bean. But Mad Bean leads the pack in coffee quality and overall vibe; it's the definition of a cool, arty, independent coffeehouse. From the americanos to the cappucinos, lattes and standard brews, they serve seriously kickass cups of coffee. And I love the emphasis on local...they feature local art on the walls and artisan crafts for sale; they serve Montreal-style bagels from the Bagel House on Avenue Rd; Lemonana mint-lemonade (locally made) and their well-chosen selection of baked goods are sourced from great local bakeries. We were looking for coffee shops around mid town after aSunday brunch and this little suggestion came up on Google maps. Walked in and we were lucky they had live music playing. Instantly fell in love with the vibe, grabbed the last table and settled in. I got the chai latte with almond milk and no syrup. My hubby ordered the Americano not even realizing the best in town claim until we noticed the mug and a slice of the carrot cake. The chai latte was definitely a good surprise for me. I've never had an almond milk based chai latte with no syrup taste as good as this one. The owner had offered I could sniff all the teas and the aromas of the fresh chai had prompted me to order this drink. It lived up to the original aromas and with just a touch of honey I didn't miss the syrup one bit. My husband's reaction after one sip of his drink was priceless. He's very picky and finds most places downtown tend to use too bold a roast. This was just perfect. Then he took a bite of the carrot cake and claimed it's the best we've ever had. Skeptical as I am I took a bite and it indeed was!!! He ended up getting another piece it was that delicious!. We stayed for a good hour and even out there year old has a great time listening to music. Very friendly staff and awesome unpretentious vibe. Must check out if you're in the area. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of small businesses have been struggling such as "The Mad Bean" located on Eglinton Ave. W Toronto. This humble coffee shop is a good place to settle down and eat. The atmosphere is fun and welcoming. You can feel the sort of "start-up solo" energy you cannot find inside of a mega-corp. This coffee shop has some of the best *insert favorite beverage* here. No matter what you enjoy the Mad Bean will give it to you delicious, fresh, and at a very reasonable price. Other reviewers say the exact same thing as me so I must not be alone in this opinion. Always a great vibe with good background music and very nice, pleasant service. "It's one of the best cups of coffee in Toronto!" I give it a 9/10! This place makes for a nice alternative to the nearby chain coffee joints. Warm wood and red brick tones serve as the background not only to cappuccino sipping but also to numerous pieces of artwork by local artists. Soothing music plays gently in the background enticing you to stay awhile. The prices are reasonable and the espresso not bad (Reunion Island coffee is good, I've sampled better, it is organic and Fair Trade to it's credit). In addition to coffee and tea Mad Bean also serves up some tasty cupcakes and muffins a la Circles & Squares Bakery. Not much else I can say about this place, it's a cozy little cafe that would be worth the visit if you are in the area and in need of coffee and/or pastry. read more

There is a certain magic which occurs when you cruise the city and randomly decide to make a left or right turn and see where it takes you. Yesterday, a few misguided turns landed me somewhere along Eglington near avenue road and into a hip little cafe. The sandwich board out front made the claim "Best Americano In The City!" That statement is Madness old Bean, simply madness!!! OK, I'll bite. I entered in and immediately fell in love with this chic urban inspired loft-y cafe. Walls adorned in brick, booths set up in high back wood finishes, urban tables and chairs abound AND.... plenty of outlets - Finally a coffee shop that gets it! People like ME need places to work all day, and outlets and WiFi (and Coffee) are our lifeblood! Saddling up in a cozy booth with my main gal Evelyn W, we set up shop for the day and made our way to the counter. I called them out on their "Best of..." claim and I was told to take a seat and they'd bring it out. Served hot and in a to-go cup, the Americano was well balanced, not too bitter and got the tingles going in my toes. There was very little aftertaste and I was buzzing by the time I got half way through! Verdict: A Definitely in the top 3 I've had in the city and top 5 in the GTA! It's the second time I go there and by some lucky accident we found the only available table inside. I say lucky because they had live music on Sunday(and by the way the guy was singing and playing the guitar really well). For atmosphere I give it 5+ What makes it even better is that their coffee is just as good. I usually get americano, but I tried latte as well. Indie Coffee Passport's addition of a cafe on Eglinton was a bit of a challenge for me, because I walk to each of the shops. Mad Bean is halfway between Spadina and Avenue Road, and I was intimidated by the prospect of having to climb the hill at Casa Loma. [Forget about walking up Avenue Road; just the thought of that was exhausting.] But one slightly icy, chilly Tuesday I decided to go for it. The cafe was full, one or two people at each table, which means Mad Bean must have struck a chord with the neighbourhood, especially considering it is surrounded by corporate coffee shops across the street and a couple of blocks away. It certainly looked like thought and care had gone into making the interior relaxing and comfortable. The soy latte I ordered was luscious and kept me warm on my walk back. read more

I've lived around the corner from The Mad Bean for over two years and have popped in maybe once a month. I've never had bad experience. It feels very comfortable, always good background music, incredibly nice staff, decent selection of treats and (most importantly) reeeally nice coffee. The only down side would be that they aren't open late... but then again, I'm rarely in the mood for a coffee late at night anyway. Most coffee shops promote themselves as having the best (insert beverage name) in the city. In The Mad Bean's case, the best Americano... and to be honest, I dig it! Such a cute, quaint cafe. Kinda small but wasn't too busy when I was there so smallness wasn't a problem. Very laid back atmosphere. Not hipster or pretentious at all like some other coffee shops. Exposed brick. Very warm-feeling. Seems to be family owned. The lady is so lovely and friendly to everyone. A pretty big community feel where at least a couple of regulars came in. Not the best latte I've had but pretty good, and definitely beats Starbucks and Second Cup. It's larger than your average serving, so better value here than at most coffee shops. Peanut butter chocolate chip cookie and regular chocolate chip cookie were pretty decent. Sandwich board outside says "best Americano in the city," so I thought I had to try it. It is actually pretty amazing. You can drink it plain. I think I overheard them talking about using more than one type of espresso depending on what they're making so maybe that's why the americano is way better than the latte. Bookcase with lots of books on it. Lots of loose-leaf tea, and other cold drinks. Bottled water is Nestle, FYI. Loyalty card, 10th one's free. Free wifi, just ask for the password. Lots of plugs from where I could see. All the goods outweigh the not-so-goods so this place definitely gets a 5 for warm, cozy, easy-going, friendly atmosphere with free wifi and plugs. What a friendly little cafe spot! The owners are so chill -- I've had some nice conversation about coffee, of course, and customers seem to be open to chat, too. It's a good spot to catch up on your reading. The cafe is a small and cozy one that looks incredibly inviting even from the outside! Cool art work hangs in the space, which houses other wonderful pleasures to distract yourself with. The latte is the best in town. It's the first thing I choose when I stumble in a coffee joint. The sandwiches and treats are tempting -- it's worth it, too! For just over a fiver, you can have a bite to eat and a coffee. For ten, you can indulge. My kinda place! There always seems to be a table open here. Mind you, I've only managed to visit during the day because it's so close to Body Harmonics Pilates on Eglinton. The Man Bean is an artsy independent coffee shop that feels like someone took it directly from the Queen West area and plopped it down in Forest Hill. It's run by a friendly husband/wife team along with a their teenage son who helps man the counter and makes some cool latte art. This shop itself has a ton of character with red brick walls decorated with artwork by whatever local artist they're featuring that week, interesting furniture and chandeliers, books you're welcome, if not encouraged to browse through, and live music at random times on weekends. The live music is a great way to spend a cheap date. Grab a coffee, share a dessert and listen to some cool tunes. They serve sandwiches, muffins and sweets. They make a great coffee, and like any great coffee shop, have free wi-fi. If you haven't already, you should definitely check this place out. A really nice little Coffee Shop with a good atmosphere and good coffee. The owner is super friendly and super nice and the atmosphere is really neat. There is a large collection of reading materials available as well as comfy places to sit. They also have live music from time to time which is a nice touch. I didn't have anything to eat but the people I were with enjoyed what they had. Also the prices are reasonable compared to some of the big chain coffee places. It's not a joke where it says best Americano in the city. It's true! Can never drink any other coffee again. I have been coming here for over 2 years. Even the entire ambiance of the mad bean is cool very relaxing. They have this scrumptious pumpkin cake that will knock your taste buds off. Accompany the cake with an espresso and you are in heaven. They have amazing soy lattes too which I drank almost everyday for a year. But then I discovered the Americano. There is no reason to go to the other franchises around there they just do not come close to the quality of this place. read more
