There are cabins scattered across the property and the main reception was held under a tent in the large field. This is a great property for events, family reunions, a weekend get-a-way, friend or business retreat etc... You are surrounded with nature, in a quiet setting and it just couldn't get much more New England than this. I can only imagine this place in the fall when all the leaves are changing color and the views from the water must be spectacular.

It features cabins of all shapes and sizes, some lakeside, some mountainside, all tucked into the trees with views of rolling hills and countryside. The proprietors, Jay and Amy, are warm, amenable and kind. The cabins are cozy and well-appointed for couples and families, with fireplaces, day beds and fridges for leftovers. Don't expect luxury; this is rustic living! Part B&B, LLL offers cabins with inclusive breakfasts, ranging from standard continental to omelettes and pancakes (don't miss these... I think they're the best pancakes I've ever had). Activity options abound: soccer (there's an entire field), badminton, tetherball, basketball, two tennis courts, and a lovely grass volleyball court. In case that isn't enough, there's also an "activity cabin" with board games, toys, books, foozball, and TV for kids' movies (see photos). Post Pond, the lodge's central feature, is a glorious place to swim - the water is warm and lovely, as ponds are meant to be. There are rowboats, kayaks, canoes and paddleboards for guests who want to paddle, as well as a fleet of bicycles. If you're into cycling or running, take a meander down N Thetford Rd half a mile from the lodge to River Rd, which takes you all the way to the winding Connecticut River. Birds, butterflies, and peacefulness abound. (Pro tip: take your first right from N Thetford onto Breck Hill Rd for the most idyllic country scene you've ever seen.) LLL's head chef, Janet, cooks up amazing, healthy fare like kale Caesar salad, pesto linguini, grilled chicken, burgers, corn on the cob, steak, jambalaya, zucchini fries, and other fresh cuisine. There's always a kids menu with hot dogs and mac n' cheese, and you can order lunch - and ice cream cones! - through the side kitchen window to dine lakeside. Twice a week there are delicious summer buffets - on Wednesdays and Sundays, LLL is hopping with BBQ, music, juggling, swing sets, see-saws and watermelon. They are also open for dinner on weeknights in their dining room, which is classy without pretention (think tablecloths and napkins, but in a cozy, homey setting). If you ask nicely, they'll set up the most glorious outdoor table under the spreading oak trees with a view of the lake, and you'll think you're in heaven. (Warm rolls and salted butter come gratis.) Amazingly, everyone who stays here manages to become friends, and it starts to feel like home. If you come during summer, prepare for the occasional thunderstorm with raincoat and umbrella... or, better yet, just live in your swimsuit! Sunblock essential, water bottle and flashlight helpful. Cell service is spotty and no WiFi in the cabins, but that feels like a blessing. If you need to plug in, grab a couch in the main lodge or barn. Whether solo or traveling with family, LLL is an amazing place to vacation, have dinner with the kids, or relax for a weekend. This place is a godsend. Thank you LLL!! *Important note: If you smell sewage, don't panic - this just means that your cabin's septic tank needs to be pumped. Tell Jay and it'll be solved lickety split!

Our stay was lovely except for the second night, we left the sign for housekeeping on the morning to clean our room and change the towels. Lo and behold we got in late around 10 pm and the bed was undone, which is fine with me BUT the towels were still on the floor!!! They don't have any staff in house at night. When I checked in late the previous night the girl I spoke to said she'll leave the room key and instructions on how to find my room on top of the front desk since she's gone by 8:30-9 pm. Anyways I followed the instructions to call this number at night if we need anything, guess what?!?! the phone was ringing at the front desk. I called multiple times from my room phone and courtesy phone next to the front desk and same result-the phone was ringing right next to me!!! We were very frustrated, I even wrote "need fresh towels" on a piece of paper and held it in front of the camera at the front desk hoping someone will see it. No such luck, I also messaged thru Expedia that night to no avail. I ended up using toilet paper to dry myself after I showered! I was very frustrated. The next day the owner's son apologized to my husband stating he thought the sign was for "do not disturb" and told us he's working on the problem because the phone calls at night wasn't getting transferred to his cell phone. I know for a fact that calls were not being transferred even the night we checked in late, an elderly guy thought I work there and needed help with something. I told him to call the same number and same thing happened, the front desk phone kept ringing. In a positive note, breakfast served in the mornings were good. When we checked out, the owner also apologized for the snafu that happened.

Kids running uncontrolled in and out. A couple of people had dogs and they were off leash outside. It simply wasn't what we had in mind for a B&B. Masks were enforced and we complied. Our Room was clean but my husband called it a "bed in the bathroom" because the sink and shower were exposed - no doors - one on the left and the other on the right with a bed in middle. Only the toilet was behind a door - whew! Oh, and the floor is painted concrete (with lots of repainting needed) with just a small area rug. Towels were a bit rough and toiletries left a bit to be desired. We wanted a nice cross breeze (being a corner bedroom) but only one window had a screen in it so we opened it. The TV had zero reception and per the host, was only there for viewing DVDs. They did provide a selection of DVDs and we watched 2 movies without difficulty. I think they should upgrade the TVs or advertise no TV. Internet was fine. The grounds are beautiful being on the CT River. We walked the neighborhood. It was lovely. The host (no hostess) was pleasant. However, given all of the above, likely we will not return to this B&B.

Upon driving up, we were immediately greeted by Wolf, who walked us to the door. Actually, I might be misremembering the dog's name, but it was a nice welcome. John and Donna are very welcoming, and Donna's breakfasts were delicious. When we sat down for breakfast in the morning, John would tell us the hot breakfast menu for the day, and serve us. We loved being able to sit outside and enjoy a lovely fresh breakfast cooked by Donna. John would entertain us with stories about bears and their dogs. Their DVD library was pretty extensive, and I think they have ambient floor heating which was nice. If you're particular about your toiletries, I would recommend bringing your own shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and soap. Their showers have a dispenser for all purpose shampoo and body wash. We wanted to go outside, and John gave us a Xerox copy of a hand drawn map for a easy walk nearby. Both John and Donna made sure that we were prepared for the outsides, whether it was bug spray or lending us umbrellas for the rain. At the end of our stay, Donna gave us one of their cute gift baskets which is part of their Facebook promotion. My friends enjoyed the stay at Breakfast on the Connecticut so much, they considered themselves B&B converts.

I somehow managed to finish the marathon the next morning running laps around Lake Morley without much sleep. My friend booked the Silver Maple Lodge and cottages here in Fairlee, Vermont. It was a quaint home that's quite off the beat path. It felt homely, since it was a home that's converted to an Airbnb for guests and travelers. It felt like I was in a vintage antique home where you can peak into a room and that was what it looked like in the early 19th century. It wasn't like that in reality but it surely felt like it! My main problem was the beds. We were assigned the room with two beds that had a bathroom with tub in the corner of the house. I remember getting up to use it at least 4 times during the middle of the night and creeping back to the bed to try to sleep. The problem with the bed is that it was literally too small for me. If I rolled too far to the left or right, even a half a turn, I would have risked rolling off the bed and onto the wood floor. It was that small. It was comical when I look back on the experience but annoying as hell when I just wanted to get enough sleep to be fresh enough to endure 26.2 miles the next morning. Needless to say that wasn't the case, but managed to get enough sanity to ease myself thru and thought of that bed that wasn't comfortable at all. I don't mean to be mean, but that's my experience here at the Silver Maple lodge and cottages. While the prices maybe substantially cheaper than that of a hotel in the local area, I'd likely go with the hotel for a better night's stay. Airbnb's are great, just the bed here only. Wish I could get those 4 hours back instead of trying to make sure I don't roll off the bed in the middle of the night. The overall experience here at the Silver Maple lodge and cottages was severely mixed. On one hand, it was a good deal to split with a friend on the room rate on two bed unit in the home. The other hand, obviously was my quality of sleep - or lack thereof, during my stay here at the Silver Maple Lodge and Cottages. The home is quite nice though. It has everything you could possible need, while the guest rooms were decidedly upstairs. My friend and I bumped into other mutual friends who were staying the night there too, which was nice. My friend spent the evening having dinner in the dining area of the Airbnb, pizza and French fries while we waited out the storm to clear. Not sure if there was maid service, but after we left our leftover pizza there, it was taken care of after we gotten back from the nearby Dollar General store down the road. The service here was okay, although the reservation was under my friend's name. I was not there when he checked in. It was neat to see the 21st century improvements made on the house, since this house was aging and modern methods of upkeep was necessary as the years go by. Although my experience was lacking, along with my sleep and sanity that night, I managed to give all my gusto and finished the marathon the next morning around Lake Morley. Call it sheer will or just the wanting to succeed, the lack of sleep beforehand weighed heavily on me. Will I swear off Airbnb's completely? Not necessarily. Just depends I guess. Not to sound mean but never again here. But, if you enjoy vintage rustic Airbnb that's off the beaten path in southeast Vermont, consider coming to this hidden gem. While my experience is individual, you'll be surprised at how much the prices are compared to hotels and other accommodations in the local area. The Silver Maple Lodge and Cottages is located at 520 S US-5 in Fairlee, Vermont. They accept major credit cards when booking your reservation online, like majority of the lodging industry is these days. As far as parking goes, they have a small but sizable amount of parking slots for those who decide to stay on the property overnight. I'm pretty sure that Fairlee doesn't have a public transportation system, so best bet would be to rent a car and get here. Amtrak or greyhound May come close enough, but you'd need a rental car. Uber and Lyft operate in the area, but can be sparse when you need one on demand. The closest commercial airport would be the Manchester Boston regional airport (MHT) or the Portland Jetport in Maine (PWM). Still a good amount of driving distance to get across state lines into Vermont. Whichever the road of life takes you, you can consider this Airbnb for your stay in southeast Vermont. While the antique house is quaint and supporting the local business is paramount, my quality of sleep that night was non existent. Take this what you will. The beds are small but might fit your style. Wasn't the case with me. 3.0 stars for the overall experience. 4.0 stars for the price and location. 2.0 for the room / bedding. 4.0 stars for the limited service. Support local! C
