In these parts, ANY restaurant is a welcome sight. The Lunchbox is nestled pretty much in the middle of nowhere. We drive a good 35-40 minutes to eat here ourselves. Its cute, decorated well, and very clean. The exterior is pleasant, lotsa parking! Bathrooms have always been tidy. I like to include these kinds of details in my reviews because I am a firm believer that if an establishment doesn't at least exercise cleanliness in the same bathroom the staff and cooks use, then I can expect the kitchen and food areas are dirty too. But the Lunchbox gets a passing grade! Lets start with my favorite things about the Lunchbox: Hand battered, made in house Onion Rings that are incredible! They also hand batter some other items, I believe chicken strips and fried mushrooms too. LOVE THIS. I love grilled chicken sandwiches, I cannot explain why lol. The sandwich here is really good. Large, juicy, fresh and really - no complaints. My less than favorite things about the Lunchbox: Our experience with servers have been a hit and miss; once we had a younger girl who was absolutely spectacular. She had great recommendations, knew the menu, was pleasant, brought refills timely, remembered side items (ranch to dip the fries in, for example), and generally made us want to come back. However, we have also had our share of duds. A 30/40 year old female server that couldn't have cared less if we spontaneously ignited in our chairs. She would've walked right past without batting an eye. lol. Also, I have noticed that every time we eat here something makes my tummy upset. Usually before we leave the restaurant even. Not sure if it is the well water (I do consume a couple glasses of water while there with my meal), or something else. They take credit card which is nice, some places up here are cash only. read more

Tried to place a carry out order on a Sunday morning at 10:30 because we didnt want to eat out in public and when I called to place a carry out order like we have done about 1/2 dozen times in the past and they told us no we couldn't place a carry out order because they had a "full house" that morning. We have been coming to the Lunchbox since it opened. We have always received great service and great food... i can say we have eatin here almost every weekend at least once when we come up and they are open.. we must say goodbye to them through. We have sold our cabin in the area so we wont be coming back as far as i can tell. If your in the area they are the best food served hands down... What a gem of a place at the corner of M65 and M72! Conveniently situated in the middle of nowhere, this is a beautiful establishment with airy light colors, lots of windows, well thought out theming and a delicious breakfast menu. We stopped thru on our way back to Indiana on the recommendation of some family members. Staying in Alpena, it was a solid half hour to arrive but worth the wait. Three of the family had the logger special, which was a generous portion of 3 eggs, choice of potato, a pancake, bacon and sausage. The sausage was outstanding with great flavor and texture. I had the corned beef skillet with potatoes and eggs and wheat toast (with homemade blueberry jam!). Sensational. With a drink, average plate was $10 or so in 2019. Just a delicious start to the day in an out of the way (for us) location. Highly recommended. read more

It's some of the best homemade food in the area, everything I've ever had there was great, (burgers, coney dogs, country fried steak). I will say their fried cod isn't desirable though. Their service is very good, all the waiters are very nice. And the ambiance is very homey. read more

We live within easy driving distance from this new restaurant. We had been away for some time and our local friends were speaking highly of the 'new place'. We stopped in for a late (2:00) lunch on a weekday. The menu had the usual plus a few twists to try. I ordered a Rubin, my date had a burger. Our meals came in a reasonable time and were wonderful. I've enjoyed Rubin sandwiches all my life, this was easily among the best ! Everything just right, even the house-cut fries were tasty. The location was pretty close to 'Nowhere', but the building was new, clean and pleasant with lots of windows. The restrooms bright and well stocked with supplies. The waitress staff lacked polish, wrapping forks in napkins two tables over and talking loudly to the other employees. Over all, this place is a 'must try'. read more

The Lunchbox is a local comfort spot that is said to focus on fresh ingredients and made from scratch up north food fare. The outside of the restaurant on first glance said hole in the wall to me. As you walk in you notice the cleanliness of the place. It is very nicely put together with wood accenting the entirety of the walls. The tables and booths are limited to a small number but for the place it should have regular availability for seating. The decor is layered with fifties-eighties style memorabilia. The main piece is a shelf lining of lunch boxes from all different eras and kinds that surround most of the main dining area. The bathrooms were also similarly themed, and were also clean and well kept. The food came out fresh and fast, almost all homemade. The French Fries, Fried Mushrooms And soup were all excellent. The mozzarella sticks left a lot to be desired but were hot and fresh out of the fryer. The fish was excellent, with a great batter crust that wasn't too oily. Their homemade pie is some of the best pie I've had up in the northern part of Michigan and was huge. Overall this is a really nice kept restaurant with some great homemade food. Stopped by today for a late lunch. Pretty cool place and the food was excellent! Sliders were full sized hamburgers and the hand cut fries were totally awesome! It's so nice to have a restaurant close to our cabin that is clean,friendly wait staff,and very good food. I had the perch dinner that comes with a choice of 2 sides; I picked nice creamy mac and cheese and cole slaw. My husband had a big cheese burger with fries. Burger was cooked just perfect, so many fries he couldn't even finish them. I have heard their pies are very good but we are usually so full from the meal that we can't eat anymore. Great food, excellent service, and a very nice atmosphere. The lunchbox theme is cool. I had the breakfast with eggs, sausage, rye toast, and hash browns. Where to start? We have driven by this place several times and have always said we need to stop. Well, we finally did.... When we stepped foot inside we were taken away by how nice it was! It felt very much like home for us. The food was excellent, the service was awesome. We had Ursula as a waitress and she did an awesome job. The food was good, and the inside of this place is really neat with lots of rustic details like lots of cedar including an inlay of the name on the wall, a high shelf around the inside with different types of tree branch holding it up, and old style glass canning canisters for salt and pepper shakers. Excellent food! We came for our first time on a Friday night. Very busy but "no wait" in a seat yourself format. I thought the chicken dinner was very good. The side salad was better than average with added yellow and green peppers My wife had the cod dinner with redskins and coleslaw. Service was great as Becky did a nice job. I didn't want to post a review online, but my phone call was never returned. I even left an email address. We stopped by during a very busy time recently to split a cheeseburger and fries. We noticed others receiving their food, but they had arrived after us, so we started paying attention. We then witnessed the waitress deliver a cheddar cheeseburger and fries to a lone diner who arrived well after we did. We watched him pick through the food and eat a fry. He then spoke to the waitress who returned to the kitchen. He picked at the food and touched the burger again. She returned apologized and took his plate back to the kitchen. Then immediately brought the same plate to our table. Gross! When asked, she admitted that she had delivered it to the wrong table and offered to get us a new one. Since we ran out of time, we simply asked for the check for our drinks. I had ordered an Arnold Palmer (ice tea and lemonade mix), but she charged me for two drinks. She explained that's how they do it. By then we were out of patience, paid the bill with no tip, and left. My call to management was to simply relay the story and suggest they review it with their employees to ensure nothing like that happens again. I am sure we will probably give it another try.
