The gamey meat was tender and succulent. I accidently ate into my wife's jackfruit pie...it was so good that I mistakenly thought it was my venison pie! £20 for any hot pie 'LOADED' which came with chips or Mash, plus heaps of roast vegetables and seasonal greens. It'll fill you up, and deliciously! Side Story: they accidently gave my wife a Chicken Pie instead of the Jackfruit Pie. The staff was so overwhelming apologetic about the error, and they refunded our ENTIRE bill! We said a small discount or just her pie being comped would've been more than fine, but they insisted on refunding the entire amount.

So that's good if you're vegetarian. Service was awesome, just like any pub, order at the bar, and they'll run a tab for you if you're going to order more beers or dessert. They bring the food to your table. Bath Ales owns this pub, so their beers are the mainstay. There was also Budvar (the original Budwesier - SOLID CHOICE) and a couple of others. I was mostly interested in the local cask ales though, and the fall seasonal, Wild Hare, was an excellent choice. I didn't see it until I was paying, but they also had a 7.3% beer (which was likely the highest ABV I saw all week) which I think was their "Double Gem", Gem being their amber ale. The Dark Side stout was also nicely done.

This place has all the love of classic dive bars if that is your scene. Good music and friendly faces. Service was a confusing at first, but was just swell once we were seated...the leftside is a side is a traditional sit down restaurant service, the right side is a classic pub style where you order everything at the bar, and the expansive outside patio is self service as well, a completely taken over by smokers and vapers like every other European patio. £20 FISH & CHIPS! The fresh beer battered haddock was thick and crispy on the outside, and moist and tender on the inside, perfection!, The chips were pleasant enough, though crushed minted peas were just okay...maybe because they day prior I had some incredible mushy mint peas at another pub. Still a great plate overall! £20 SHORTCRUST PIES...wife went with the Chicken, Leek, and Herb...wonderfully rich and savory, with flavorful scent and warm, buttery pie crust. Lovely! At £22 for 3 courses it's pretty good value, we all preordered and prepaid for our meals. I had the parfait (pate) to start which came with thin crispy crackers and a sweet chutney, it was nice but there weren't enough crackers for the amount of parfait, having said that my plate was cleared. Main course- There was a hot service trolley so when we were called we went up and told the man what we had ordered, he ticked it off the list and the waitress then served the meat/ fish/ veggie option and you help your self to the trimmings including pigs in blankets, stuffing balls and veg. I had the beef bourguignon, which came with onion rings, the dish was nice it had a really tasty sauce but the meet was a little tough, the onion rings were cracking though! I had the cheese board for dessert, it was ok, came with 3 cheeses and a few crackers with onion chutney and celery. My friend chose the Christmas Eton mess and we were all surprised with the tiny portion, it was really nice but you expect more. There was one rather big error, one of my colleagues is vegan, his nut roast disappeared. Despite preordering and ticking off at the service trolley they managed to lose his nut roast. He waited and waited and at one point I believe it was suggested by staff that someone else must have had it by mistake (I think we'd notice if we had two mains, especially if one was nut roast and the waitress was serving the main dish) Any how after a rather lengthy wait he opted for a plate of veg instead, I'm not sure if he eventually got the nut roast, Not the end of the world but not such great value. On the whole the staff were friendly, theres parking out back and the pub itself is nicely decorated. But due to the very average food and the nut roast saga it's only a 3 from me!

It's a larger pub than I would have expected and they serve wonderful food. I got chicken breast stuffed with stilton wrapped in some form of bacon-like meat with roasted potatoes.....mmmmmm And I had my very first beer at my very first pub. The gentleman at the bar was kind enough to give me a rather large sample of it before I ordered and I got the Caledonian IPA. Loved the atmosphere, the staff was friendly, and everything was tasty. I'm for it.
