I still remember when this was a big time live music venue, but unfortunately those days are now long, long gone. In fact they had bands such as Nirvana and AC/DC playing here (and surprisingly the bar tended didn't know about the Nirvana fact, though he told me about the AC/DC fact). They still do live music, though it is a lot more mellower than what it used to be (back in the day that is, and I am still kicking myself for completely missing Nirvana playing here - I went and saw a movie with a friend instead, and we could have seen the movie anytime, it's not every day you get to see Nirvana playing in a pub). As for the Lion, it still has it's charm, and I do quite like the beer garden, however times have changed.

The Lion is just a very cool place to have drinks, lunch, dinner, or watch live music. It is a hotel/pub, but has a fancy restaurant behind it as well if you're after a "proper" dinner. Situated on the corner of Melbourne St and Jerningham St (opposite The Store), it is convenient and accessible. My favourite meal here would have to be the Vegie Burger! It is the fattest burger (by fat I mean large and filling) ever, with a big vegie patty and generous fillings - not to mention, "fat chips" on the side. Yes, they are called "fat chips" on the menu. The best place to eat these fabulous meals would be in the outdoor back area, out past the live music area. Here, there are comfy chairs and tables sheltered underneath a verandah. There are also seats outside facing the street, which are nice on a summer night. On Friday nights there is live music, which is always enjoyable. In addition, this place often brings out free nibbles and finger food like party pies, hot dogs, and samosas. Brilliant.

I dined in the casual area for a work lunch where we had pre-ordered. They delivered quickly as we were on a schedule and we're courteous with our requests for condiments and extra cutlery. I ordered the mushroom and grain burger and was pretty underwhelmed. There was a relish and spinach leaves that were tasty but the burger itself was overtaken by a cumin flavour that was so strong. Veggie burgers tend to have cumin which is fine but the mushroom just didn't sit well with it and I ate most of it because I was hungry but didn't finish it. The fries were overcooked and the whole meal felt like it had at under a heat lamp for too long. Other people ordered the Lion burger which seemed to go down well, which was quite large, featuring egg which was favoured by the majority. The venue itself was nice and modern, nice atrium style area which would be good in Summer. The casual dining area is adjacent to the sports bar area and the restaurant. My other gripe was we had a staff member hovering around our table ready to take our plates as soon as we had finished. He even tried to take my friend's plate before she had finished! If we were fine dining I would understand but we were at a pub, on a Thursday which was not busy. It would have been possible to wait until we were ready to leave. All in all, it was a nice atmosphere with a good beer selection (local craft brews on tap) but the food failed to impress. Maybe stick to a few drinks with friends on a Friday night.

The best fine dining restaurant in Adelaide. Others come and go but the restaurant in The Lion Hotel is consistently one of the best. It has the added advantage of being part of Adelaide's best pub. Not pompous and sterile like The Magill Estate and half the price. Fresh local produce, amazing steaks, modern cuisine and fast friendly service paired with a great reasonably price quality wine list.

I had a fantastic meal at The Lion restaurant. Delicious steak that melted in your mouth. The desserts were really nice and high quality and all less than $15.00 which I was impressed by. The service was slow but the waiter acknowledged that, so it didn't bother me so much. Somewhere I would recommend for a fancy occasion.

Maxing Christmas Eve experience. Tables decorated appropriate to the season -the quality Christmas crackers were well received with trinkets that could be used. The Special Menu provided something for any taste. My Coorong Black Angus steak cooked to perfection - served on a potato purée. The green garden salad was a great accompaniment. None of our large party could make use of the tasty selections of the dessert menu. The waitress assigned to the table was friendly and highly skilled.

Champagne brunch this morning was delightful in the most spectacular morning sun, could have made it a better morning. Food was great.

Ok, maybe I'd throw in the word comfort too, for this hotel had the most comfortable bed of my entire two week trip. Yup, I was as snug as a little joey in his mother's pouch. Oh, and the carpeted floors were simply Heaven with so much spongy padding underneath the carpet that I felt like I was walking on a cloud. I swear this experience was just like taking a trip to a spa, and it had me crying, "Why can't my carpets at home be this awesome!" Finally, the location of this one rocks!! The whole area near the hotel is loaded with bars and restaurants of just about every style--why I even found a sushi conveyor-belt restaurant around the corner. Kanpai! I always mix business and pleasure when I travel. My room here was delightful. Large main room, separate bedroom. Bathroom down the hall. Much larger than a normal hotel room. Kitchenette with fridge and microwave. I would have preferred a work table, but the bar-height workspace was large and worked very well. The overall feel was extremely comfortable and it was easy to just settle in and feel at home. The staff were great, especially at the bar. Bar/dining area opens to the sidewalk seating. In October the weather was pretty perfect. It took me a full day to understand the bartending staff. The Adelaide accent is a bit stronger than Melbourne or Sydney. But they are very patient with Americans who ask for everything to be repeated three times. I stayed four nights and had an excellent experience. Would recommend it and would stay here again.

Before any other Yelpers start waxing on about their opinion compared to mine, yes there are some nice places, but I think in the city the nicest places are the historical ones that have been made over - until you stay over at Mantra you can't compare. Big rooms, very lush, plush and highly relaxing. Of course you pay a high price, but compared to other capital cities the price is relatively good; it is high for Adelaide. But expect great service plus, and great rooms plus, and you may be visiting, but end up staying in your room the whole time you are here, because it is nice.

Which I did! The Tap Inn had become old and staid and lacking atmosphere save for their Tuesday quiz nights which were great fun. Bring on The Jungle! The new theme throughout is wonderful with palm trees, a massive gorilla, a reasonably sized elephant, vines, tunnels and surprises around every corner. The owners have done a great job in pre-creating the atmos before you've even had your first drink! Talking of which, there's an amazing array of beers, wines and champagnes available, and at prices that won't cause you to 'go ape'. Each of the bars is well stocked and they have a wonderful range of beer on tap as well as the traditional imports. The food is nothing short of spectacular! Their new Argentinian rotisserie is something to behold, and the meat that comes from it is a melt-in-the-mouth experience to delight every palate! There are over 80 'swords' that gently turn on the spit, cooking an incredible feast of meats and seafood. The Head Chef Praveen is a genius! The meat is provided by their own in-house butcher Michael, who is 'on display' as he cuts the various offerings. The menu is comprehensive, exciting and again, well priced. I even went there for Christmas Lunch which was an all you can eat delight. At $95 per head I expected a great deal - and I wasn't disappointed!! The staff are unbelievably friendly in each of their fantastic bars. They go out of their way to help and serve you with a constant smile on their faces. They are everywhere too - no need to wait an hour to be served here! My favourite of all the bars is the Rooftop. On a balmy evening it's open to the skies and stars with plenty of seating available. You can even have a game of Jungle Bocce if you're pissed enough! Just as an added bonus - if you're desperate for the loo - why use the stairs to get there when you can slide down one of the fun jungle slides! The Crafty Monkey bar on the ground floor has free fresh nuts (I know, right?), and is where you can enjoy their Happy Hour! All in all, I'm deeply impressed with the new Kent Town Hotel. I've spent many wonderful evenings there and intend to spend many more. Finally Adelaide has a new and exciting venue to crow about so let's hope that the powers that be ensure that it stays fresh. Well done to Paul, Kendel and all concerned!
