This is what all pubs should be doing. I know it's a hard time for hotels & pubs in Adelaide at the moment. There are a lot of new restaurants and bars opening all of the time. It's competitive. But, it takes a smart hotel owner to realise that all you need to do to compete is be creative and cook amazing food. That is what The Highway does so well. Just look at the photos! Whether you want something more al la carte or your regular pub affair; The food is great here! In fact, so is the wine & beer lists. They stock a great selection of craft beer and boutique wines. High fives for Alpha Box & Dice! Nice! Be on the look out for the seasonal menus on their social media. Game Season being a favourite over the last two years. The Chefs here love to be creative. My last visit I chowed down on an Alpaca Cheeseburger and it was amazing! It was very similar to beef, just a little lighter. You probably could not tell the difference if you did not know beforehand. This pub does have gaming. But let's face it; most of them do these days. However, what is good for people like me who do not like gaming, is that it is in a completely different wing to the restaurant and front bar. I really like that! During the summer months this beer garden is a great weekend hang out! There is an outdoor bar, plenty of space for all of your mates to have a good Sunday Session. I still remember when we referred to this place as 'grab-a-granny', probably because this was where all the over 40 singles would congregate (and it sounds as if it had an ever worse reputation once). However I don't think that is the case anymore. The pub has basically everything, including, unfortunately, pokies. However, ignoring that there is an awesome beer garden out the back with a Diaquari bar, as well as a fine dining restaurant. Come Friday and Saturday night the beer garden becomes a nightclub, and I remember coming here one night simply to have a beer before I caught the bus home and found that the bouncers were uncharacteristically welcoming. Despite not being dressed up, and having a book in my hand, they were more than happy to step in for a drink. However, as I have said, and will say again, it is the beer garden that I think is the best part of this place. read more

Wow this place really blew me away with the outside beer garden!! Huge decking with tonnes of heaters and cute little booths to winter proof your drinks and catchups. The menu is HUGE and while some stuff is pricey most is super affordable and stuff you'd never make at home. Theres the normal pub fare and then some gourmet selections mixed in to keep you on your toes! The specials board was really quirky with quail eggs and wallaby on offer but I stuck to my cabbage tacos (they had a weird name like raddichios?) with a chickpea filling. My friend had a masssssive helping of the squid which was the best she'd had and my other friend had a really gorgiously plated apple crumble. Love this place and the bar was gorgeous, will be back! This place certainly has vibe, but don't go to the Deck and Lounge Bar if you're on a first date and actually want to have a conversation with the person you're with, there's way too much happening for that. There's a constant flow of people from about 7pm onwards and the music is already playing. From about 9pm onwards, the inside takes on a 'nightclub' feel to it and the open air area continues to feel like a beer garden.....a very busy beer garden. That being said, it's a great place to go and hang out with your friends for a drink. The food is GREAT! I've never had a bad meal there, or come to think of it, I've never had a mediocre meal there either. The only issue I have with the food is the price. Last time I was there I had a delicious Smoked Chicken with Candied Pecans, Danish Feta, Pear and Orange Salad. It really was something scrummy, but it wasn't $22 worth of scrummy, especially when there was a whole lot of lettuce left at the end. *They also specify vegetarian and gluten free options on their menus* There's MASSIVE TV screens playing various games/matches and then flips to music videos. There's plenty of staff and security all over the place. The vibe is great and well worth checking out if you haven't been for the past year or so. read more

I don't want to go to the Highway. The Highway is for bogans. Except it's not. The Highway is a surprising little tart. This place suffers from a terrible rep which compels me to write this review to tell you one thing: the Highway is really, genuinely, remarkably, note-worthily good. I had the fish of the day, the marlin, and it was spectacular. Genuinely spectacular. Not fancy in a Michelin Star kind of way, but just surprisingly flavoursome, well cooked and well presented food. The worst bit is that I was jealous of everybody else's food. Not jealous enough to swap my marlin, but the burger, the salt and pepper squid and whatever that other guy had we're fantastic. Well priced too. Add to that a great live guitarist and I was impressed. Not bad for a Wednesday night. It should be noted that this review relates to the beer garden and restaurant sections. It's also a great place to watch a pay per view UFC event on a Sunday afternoon with a great atmosphere and knowledgable fans. Downsides are two: last time I went to the front bar (a Friday night) I was confronted by a gentleman who wished to inform me that he KNEW I was an undercover police officer (I work in advertising) and he was very robust in his persuasive techniques. Our regular drink and chats meet-up spot, The Highway isn't too close to home but not as far as the city and worth the petrol to drive there. The staff are always friendly, most drinks are available with good choices on tap, and a small choice in cocktails. The seating area is great and there's always at least one spot to sit at (well almost always), with an indoor area (complete with fireplace), or outdoor area with heaters in winter and a huge television. Lots of people have talked about the Highway as a nightclub or a pub but I wanted to talk about my restaurant experience which was so amazing, it is worth speaking out about. The restaurant is relatively small with seating for around 50, but is decorated contemporarily and is welcoming. The menu is very vast with a range of choices for entrees, sharing platters, mains, and dessert options. And you know there is a wide range of drinks available when the drinks menu is 6 pages long! We received excellent service from all of our waitresses and waiters and the processes they go through to take your order, bring your food and answer any questions is very professional. They presented the specials to us and explained what they were and the costs. Special shout out to Trish who was our waitress most of the time and was very attentive without hovering and being annoying. The food was also amazing and really good value. I had the Salt and Pepper squid which is only $18.00 and comes with an enormous bowl of squid, fries and a yummy Asian salad. My boyfriend had the American Style Ribs which were so big that they were almost off the plate. They were covered in sticky BBQ sauce and were served with a huge pile of fries. Having never eaten at The Highway before, I would definitely go back and would put it in my top 3 eating experiences in Adelaide. read more

It's okay, I confess. I am a huge fan of The Highway Hotel. Particularly because of the different nights they have. My favourite is Tuesday which is known as the movie night. You walk in to the Deck and Lounge Bar and you are greeted with blankets and popcorn (all for free) while you wait for the movie of the night to begin. There's always a wide variety of films that they choose to show for the month. They've previously had Dirty Dancing, Mamma Mia, The Blues Brothers, Little Shop of Horrors, Pretty In Pink, Shaft and the list goes on! Did I mention the movie is also free? If you really wanted to go out on a cheap date this is definitely the place to go as they will never hassle you to buy anything! When I first found out the night was free I was a bit unsure about it because I immediately thought, 'I can't just rock up and not buy anything. How stingy will they think I am?!' However, that was not the case. In my experience the staff have never been anything but kind to me. They always make you feel welcome and that they'd love for you to return. I definitely recommend visiting The Highway on a Tuesday night. It's quiet, it's romantic, they always have great films showing and it's free. I cannot stress that enough! This place was heaving on a Sunday afternoon. They've definitely got everything covered; They had poker going on in the gaming lounge, the bar had people lounging and enjoying wine and other bevvies, and the beer garden had a 40th birthday happening. We both had schnitzel - I made mine a Parma and it was pretty good. The chips were nicely cooked and it came with a small salad. They've got a check in special for a glass of wine so we took them up on that offer. It's definitely a place to be on a sunny afternoon on the Anzac. read more

A laid back atmosphere for Friday (or any day) after work drinks. The highway really does have it all by way of relaxed atmosphere and good food and drink in a convenient location. Separated beer garden, pokies room and bistro the highway has a little something for everyone. In the bistro or beer garden on a Friday night they often have a musician playing some tunes for you to listen to while you relax with friends - although to be honest the quality of music could be better, live music always adds a nice touch to any venue. The highway is a great place to go to watch any footy game or UFC matches, I'm not necessarily into footy but the atmosphere when surrounded by avid footy lovers is contagious. Finally, the food served in the main dining area is delicious and the price is average - high. I ordered the tri quinoa salad which was fresh and tasty with pieces of popped corn throughout. Give it a go for an after work catch up or drinks with your mates - there really is something for everyone read more

Referring solely to the restaurant...... A 5-star review for the restaurant experience. Really quite superb. Above and beyond what I would have expected given the magnitude of the bill. We ordered two quite different dishes, pan-seared atlantic salmon (that was frankly incredible) and a pork roast. Lovely dessert option. The service was a rare treat as well. Knowledgeable, friendly without being too invasive. Their minimalist approach really added to the experience. I read other reviews of the Highway and they differ. But then the place is HUGE! There is a pokies section, a sports and betting bar. Had dinner in the Lounge Bar. A very pleasant environment it is too, there's a lovely large outdoor area (Heated) and a decent sized indoor dining area. They offer a range of foods from a light snack of Tacos to the full on Steak fest and a selection of gourmet pizza. Being a carnivore at heart I had to try their Braised Pork Ribs .. They must have been slow cooked for ages, the meat falls off the bones (no knife needed) served with some salad leaves and a small quantity of chips. The Highway has since undergone a complete facelift, and is now the hot place to be with youngsters from all over town. Women strut across the courtyard, showing off the latest summer fashion - less is more. The effort from the blokes should also be commended, as this place is like a walking catalogue for Globalize. The bar staff are pretty much off season Celebrities themselves, and this Hotel even has it's own iPhone App! With themed evenings every night of the week, this place is always guaranteed to pack a crowd. So nearly gave this one five starts but it was dropped back to four because of their inconsistent dress codes. One visit they told us my pants aren't dressy enough and made us eat in the bar instead. The next time we go to the restaurant we dress up more and find a table there for a funtion and one of them, I shit you not, is in her denim overalls and her pink crocs!?!?!?!?!?!? So dress rules apparently don't apply if you are in a big group that will spend lots of money. That being said the food here is bloody fantastic. The first time I went I had roast lamb with vegies and the best rosemary gravy. It was cooked to perfection. The second time I had steak with chips and again, cooked to perfection. Both times I had the same dessert. It's the best plate with the most amazing desserts on it. There are three small serves and one is the most delectable cheesecake that I just can't go past. It looks tiny when they bring it out but it is ample once you eat it with such rich flavours. The presentation of all their dishes is like something out of Masterchef! Like I mentioned, I have also eaten in the Bar which was of course much cheaper and still a decent sized burger that tasted ok, the serving size was big enough that I couldn't even finish it all but the bun was a little too greasy to hold and you can't eat a burger with a knife and fork! Just had a meal in the Sports Bar to escape the heat. Had heard the ribs were good so gave them a crack. Awesome! Definitely slow cooked, lots of meat, tasty sauce. And for $15 it's a bargain, you won't go hungry. Next time might try the rib dish (more expensive) in the bistro. read more

I've been here quite a few times over the years, I've only ever eaten in the dining room, so I'm not sure what the rest of the menu is for outside. I realise with their schnitzels they try to make them "healthier" with their crumbs and grains that they put on them but I want a schnitzel so obviously I'm not really concerned about the not so great health benefits that come from that. My partner gets the steak with the mash every time and he can not fault it and I gave to say that mash, wow! I find the chips are way too salty for me but I hate salt so as soon as I taste it uugghhh. Slightly over priced. read more

This place is revolting. Supporting this venue would be supporting discrimination. We live in the city and headed out to do some shopping on anzac highway today and thought we would try this venue for a quick lunch. We chose not to go into the restaurant area as even though lunch time we were not really dressed for this so we sat in the indoor/outdoor area. A female staff person promptly proceeded to embarrass us, telling us there was a dress code focusing on my husbands 'tracksuit' pants (they are black sports pants) when there were multiple other people in the venue dressed very casually including wearing thongs! We both work in human services and very familiar with the treatment that people receive due to other people's value judgements. This staff person decided that we were not the kind of human beings that should be served. No, we were not dressed up but we were both wearing clean, casual clothes, does this mean we cannot buy lunch in a pub? No it doesn't we went back into the city and to a hotel close to home that can provide customer service. We have never been refused anywhere and my husband turns 40 next month, so we know it is not about us at all, this is a venue that condones discrimination read more
