blackboard out the front with upcoming gigs
    Chloe L.

The Metro is the pub I spend most of my time at these days, for very reason Andrew C. pointed out - they have a band room. When the Exeter had to reduce the quality and quantity of their gigs due to noise restrictions down on apartment-filled Rundle St, the Metro picked up the slack. It now plays host to many of the best local and Australian up-and-coming acts - Thee Oh Sees, Terrible Truths, Batrider, Fake Tan (these guys are doing a Sunday residency here over summer), Fabulous Diamonds, Collarbones + more. When you're tired of trying desperately to get laid at Jive, and you actually want to just hang out with some friends and see a good gig, this is the place to come. The place maintains a pleasantly bland decor - nice little pouffes and couches in the neat theatre bar (the Metro is just opposite the Queen's Theatre, so it brings in clientele on theatre nights), a fireplace, a Sopranos (!) pinball machine and high tables in the band-room bar. There is a medium size pokies room, which instead of destroying the live music, subsidises it. Plus you can duck in and grab a few free cookies and a cup of tea. The staff are really lovely, and there is two outdoor seating areas - on the street front and between the back bar and the band-room. What I like about the Metro is I'm always likely to run into people I like to see, but not every single person I know, like at the Exeter (which is still one of my favourite pubs, but for different reasons). Oh, and they have $3 beers on Wednesday nights after 9pm.

Guaranteed a relaxed time for a beer any day or night and the meals are homely and plentiful. Great venue for local music, not just limiting itself to the wanky Indie scene that seems to be popular nowadays. I love the bar staff, and be sure to get a Metro mates card to accumulate points, and also take advantage of drink specials.

I love a traditional Aussie pub, and the Metropolitan is just that. A place for the hard-working individual to enjoy a drink after a tiring day, people here are just looking for a relaxed evening (or afternoon) to drink their worries away. I'm sold! The service is great, the beer is cheap, and the outdoor seating is shady and mellow - what more could you ask for? There's no air of pretence and the regular patrons are down to earth. It's a simple, refreshing change from the overly pretentious bars littering the Chinatown area, and its simplicity is something to relish. All you need is good people and good booze, and the Metro doesn't strive to do anything but provide the setting.

12/1/2012 So this is the kinda pubs Adelaide city locals go for. Hmmm...I see. Not bad. Much more classier looking inside than a lot of other pubs I've seen so far. Or so it would seem upon walking in. No doubt, we all like those leather couches, bright chandelier, and direct access to the bar, and this place does it right. THREE STARS. I needed the bathroom badly after vising two other pubs before this one, so I had follow the signs on the back wall and ended up in what looked like a backyard public loo. I was a wee bit disappointed with the toilets...I would call this place "Drinkin' and Dinin'" or "Worst Toilets for an Adelaide Pub" ...both of which I think are quite fitting names. It's that bad, they're like the toilets you would see in a camp dormitory (if you remember those 'Outdoor Education' camp excursions in high school, then you'll agree 100% with me). I was just expecting...more. Maybe some tables nearby?! The dining area is hidden away towards the back of the hall. And, the bartenders didn't even talk to us. She just took our order and continued with her work. Must be a busy gal. Apart from the two of us, there's only a handful of other customers here, and they're already drinking. But I don't want to end bitter. Overall - since this was my first time here - and it was on a late Wednesday afternoon after work - the poshy look and convenient access of this place are things I can appreciate about this pub. p.s. no joke: WORST pub toilets. Trust me.

Ok, maybe I'd throw in the word comfort too, for this hotel had the most comfortable bed of my entire two week trip. Yup, I was as snug as a little joey in his mother's pouch. I swear this experience was just like taking a trip to a spa, and it had me crying, "Why can't my carpets at home be this awesome!" Finally, the location of this one rocks!! The whole area near the hotel is loaded with bars and restaurants of just about every style--why I even found a sushi conveyor-belt restaurant around the corner. Kanpai! There is easy transition between levels, but not a whole lot of space for two cars crossing paths. I would advise driving slow through here. The elevator is located at one end of each level, so you may have to walk a bit to gain access to it. The elevator is kind of old and makes weird noises. But, it works. This is an unusual carpark, I think it is important that I point out a couple of things. Firstly, you must pay for your ticket at a ticket both near the valet part of the Playford across the street. I took a photo so you know what it looks like. There are a bunch of signs explaining this, but I see a lot of people still getting confused. The other thing is that the buttons for the elevator on the bottom level are not clearly marked. You will see a grey button. Hit that one to get into it. Final thing to note, is that this carpark is cheap if you are stopping in town during business hours. If you are parking during the night, got for one that has an after hour special elsewhere. 0 to 1 Hour $4.00 1 to 2 Hours $8.00 2 to 3 Hours $12.00 3 to 4 Hours $16.00 4 to 5 Hours $20.00 5 to 6 Hours $24.00 Maximum $25.00

Most pick this place because it is affordable accomodation in the city, plus they have spa rooms. So it seems to be most of the male species think that dining at heights with great views and then back to the room with the spa is a perfect choice for an anniversary or special birthday. And granted the spa's are in the suites and they are a lot nicer than the general run of the mill rooms most people would get. Plus they have a pool, with spa, and fitness room on the roof - which I find kind of cool! Personally if I was going to pay somewhere, and it was in the city for a night out, I would pick somewhere else, purely because the whole point of staying in there is not to have to worry about getting home at the end of the night, but this is on the outskirts of the city and a little far to walk after a night out. I would prefer to stay right in the middle of the city if I am going to bother paying to stay in there at all. If it's my anniversary and I want to stay inside a room all night I would still pick somewhere else because thinking about how many people would have had sex in a hotel spa in a private room well and truly puts me off getting into one. I mean it's not like the one with the pool which has chlorine cycling through it to kill the germs. They do wedding and conference packages but I have never been to an event such as these at this venue. Info is available on their website and pics do look nice. Plus they do have parking at the Hotel for guests.

A live band was playing for the background music and for those that wished to dance. The wine list was extensive although no sparkling red by the glass. The bottle of red we did get costs about $10 in the bottle shop and was marked up steeply to $48. As it was Christmas in July it was a set menu with tiny freshly baked bread rolls to start with salted butter. The entrees were a choice of three. I had the pork belly which was divine and my husband the prawn cutlets. Even though it was an entree only three prawns on the plate seemed skimpy. Perhaps he should have gone for the warm caramelised shallot & Woodside ashes goats cheese tart (v), baby herb salad with white balsamic glaze. We asked the waiter to light the candle on our table as ours was the only table not alight. Mains were a choice of four. I had the rump which was cooked the perfect medium. My husbands turkey was a disappointment. His serve was large but the turkey was processed and not 100% turkey meat. Other choices were seared Tasmanian salmon fillet (gf), crushed peas, roast spices potato, crisp pancetta with tomato oil, and the meal of semolina and ricotta gnocchi (v) mushroom ragout, thyme, parmesan cheese. All mains are served with sides of table fresh garden salad with balsamic dressing and steamed seasonal vegetables. However, neither the salad and vegetables were given to us and we didn't realise until dessert was served so it was too late. My husband mentioned it to the waiter, and he acknowledged it was forgotten but did not make amends with the offer of anything complimentary. Dessert was a choice of three. I had the passionfruit meringue smash and didn't like the pieces of coconut in the smooth coconut cream. My husband was again disappointed with his third course of plum pudding as it was half the size of a cupcake and didn't taste as nice as mine. Perhaps again he should have chosen the chocolate and cherry trifle with toffee and custard bubbles. The atmosphere was nice but the difference in meal quality ranged from excellent to pretty average, so I wouldn't go back in a hurry, especially due the wine prices.
