Okay, I could say that this place is really, really, ... really bad, but that would be cheating. He's right though, there actually isn't all that much to see here, and even if you are in the shopping centre doing some shopping you'd probably avoid this place. Actually, the only good thing about the Castle Tavern is the bottle shop, and that's saying something. Mind you, when I was working in the Coles here I did drop in for a drink, but I generally, like my friend suggests, avoid the place.

Our big issue lies with the management and the food. We had not eaten at all that day due to work, so on the first night, we thought to eat at the hotel and ordered two chicken parmies-what could go wrong? The schnitzels were barely cooked, and the sauce was very bland, though it came with a generous serving of chips. We ordered our food around 6:30 PM. Within six hours (by midnight), my partner became extremely ill, and an hour or so after that, she couldn't stop projectile vomiting Eventually, It subsided, but the next morning (Friday), she ate some toast and went back to vomiting violently, leading us to go straight to the hospital. After talking with a doctor and after many drugs, we were told she was suffering from extreme food poisoning. Once we learned this, we instantly knew there was only one possible source: our hotel When we got out, we informed the hotel manager that night. She took all our detalls and sald she wasn't the manager who deals with this and that we should come back the morning of our checkout when the right manager. would be in. Upon checkout, that manager said the same thing and assured us someone would call us. Well, that was at least a week ago, and we have heard nothing. We have attempted to handle this situation face-to-face with the hotel, but communication is a two-way street, and I am extremely disappointed. The worst part of all this is the dinning area and out door area is beautiful and cosy and the meal looked absolutely delicious but looks are deceiving. Meanwhile the jarlsberg arancini were delicious even though they didn't taste like jarlsberg. The prawn and cured salmon pizza was loved by some and disliked by others. Beer garden is amazing. As soon as word gets out, this place is going to get very busy. Great live music. Great choice of seating (stools, seats, undercover, in the sun), HUGE TV, awesome atmosphere, nice range of wines. The old menu was cheesy, extensive and offering all kinds of pub fare but at quite a decent price (although some Schnitzel topics - and toppings - were a bit Frankenstein). But it was a warm hearth, a mighty fine list of beverages, and a coziness that only old pubs of yore can give you. The new menu boasts the title "gastropub" yet, there is nothing close to a gastropub feeling; the menu just got a trimming, a few new dishes. But more importantly, out went the beer lists and extensive wine selection. You add a 45 minute wait for two dishes to show up on a relatively empty evening and.. Do not like the direction this place is headed -- straight for the iceberg. I wept like that time Leo was on the silver screen.

When I went to there on a Saturday afternoon, I was lucky enough to experience their outdoor seating in the beer garden. The beer garden is located at the northern edge of the hotel/pub. There are many large trees to take shade under and a range of barrels to sit at and enjoy a drink. For the beer garden, they had a window in the main building where you could order drinks. The drinks were well priced. One thing that I found pretty cool was that there was a person collecting beer glasses from tables once people were done. He even wore a shirt that said "glassy" on it. What was even more impressive than the humour with the shirt was the fact that he could carry around 40 glasses stacked up and still open the door to go inside. Some serious talent there! Although I did not end up selecting from their exquisite snack and meal menu for the beer garden, as the event I went to was catered, I managed to have a quick browse of the menu. The meals were around $20 or so, which is pretty good and they all sounded great. I will have to try some of them, the next time I go. As for the food at the catered event, I felt it was quite innovative, favoursome and well presented. The first item I had were sundried tomato and thyme pinwheels. It was a simple bite sized appetizer however the thyme and the sundried tomato paste went well together. The flatbread that held the ingredients together was also not too loose meaning that it could easily be eaten without a plate or napkin. The second appetizer was a Brie and Quince cracker. The watercracker had a thin slice of Brie at the base followed by a small rectangular prism of quince paste. It was a very simple yet effective appetizer. It is a shame I didn't get a photo of that one before I sent it on a one-way journey to my stomach. Appetizer the third was a samosa. It was filled with diced vegetables and was served hot. For this one, I thought ahead and grabbed a napkin and waited a minute for them to cool down. The same could not be said for the other people at the table who endured went straight in and found it to be quite hot indeed. The samosa was served with what appeared to be a chive sauce. The sauce was tasty and complemented the flavor of the samosa and it's spiced vegetable contents quite well. The fourth appetizer was a prawn wrapped in a fancy tempura batter. I am not a big seafood lover however I broke of the tip of the batter and found it to be quite nice. Appetizer number 5 were sausage rolls and mini pasties. And the best part was, they looked like they were made at the hotel and not bought from a supermarket! The worst part was, they ran out by the time they got to me cause most people took two of them (a pastie and a sausage roll each). The sixth and final appetizer was a thin strip of crumbed fish served with tartare sauce. I had a nice sized piece which unfortunately broke when I dipped it in the tartare sauce, however I was fortunately able to savage it. The batter was nice and not too oily. It was well crumbed and the fish was fresh. If these appetizers are anything like the food on the menu, then I will definitely be going back. The surroundings were lovely and it was the perfect spot to spend the afternoon.
