One night we tried the steak & they were both very tough, Lucy replaced them with the salmon which was very appreciated. Bev has been sick so she thought she would try the steak again thinking it would good for her. Patrick asked the chef for a nice tender piece of steak for Bev. Big mistake, it was tough again, with a big piece of Grissle and fat. the salad was mixed lettuce leaves, no dressing. The chips were nice. My salmon was nice as usual. Bev called Patrick over & told him the steak was tough & showed him the salad. The salad was meant to be Pear & parmesan cheese. We found the tiniest bit of parmesan but I think the pear was still in the tree.only sorry I didn't think to take a photo of Bev's plate. I am Patrick came & told us THE CHEF WASN'T HAPPY. Excuse me he didn't pay $24. for a hand full of chips. There was no refund, no offer of a complimentary coffee or drink. We are extremely disappointed with the service & food & wouldn't recommend The Avoca. Lucy was always lovely and looked after us & it is a shame she doesn't seam to be there anymore. Wake up, the food & service is what keeps people coming back. Sherrie Stehbens

Our big issue lies with the management and the food. We had not eaten at all that day due to work, so on the first night, we thought to eat at the hotel and ordered two chicken parmies-what could go wrong? The schnitzels were barely cooked, and the sauce was very bland, though it came with a generous serving of chips. We ordered our food around 6:30 PM. Within six hours (by midnight), my partner became extremely ill, and an hour or so after that, she couldn't stop projectile vomiting Eventually, It subsided, but the next morning (Friday), she ate some toast and went back to vomiting violently, leading us to go straight to the hospital. After talking with a doctor and after many drugs, we were told she was suffering from extreme food poisoning. Once we learned this, we instantly knew there was only one possible source: our hotel When we got out, we informed the hotel manager that night. She took all our detalls and sald she wasn't the manager who deals with this and that we should come back the morning of our checkout when the right manager. would be in. Upon checkout, that manager said the same thing and assured us someone would call us. Well, that was at least a week ago, and we have heard nothing. We have attempted to handle this situation face-to-face with the hotel, but communication is a two-way street, and I am extremely disappointed. The worst part of all this is the dinning area and out door area is beautiful and cosy and the meal looked absolutely delicious but looks are deceiving. The images below were of the actual meal my partner ate too So, long story short: don't stay here, and definitely don't eat here.

It was delicious and tender but was served lukewarm to cold (on both occasions). I'm not sure if this is how it's intended to be served but the consensus is that it'd be better served warm. The chips are yummy. We ordered these both times too. And the lamb with rice and papadam. The vegetable platter was yummy though not everyone's cup of tea. Meanwhile the jarlsberg arancini were delicious even though they didn't taste like jarlsberg. The prawn and cured salmon pizza was loved by some and disliked by others. Beer garden is amazing. As soon as word gets out, this place is going to get very busy. Great live music. Great choice of seating (stools, seats, undercover, in the sun), HUGE TV, awesome atmosphere, nice range of wines. Staff were a little on the inexperienced side but I assume they're just new and in training. Overall, two great experiences. We'll be back again.

Whether you want something more al la carte or your regular pub affair; The food is great here! In fact, so is the wine & beer lists. They stock a great selection of craft beer and boutique wines. High fives for Alpha Box & Dice! Nice! Be on the look out for the seasonal menus on their social media. Game Season being a favourite over the last two years. The Chefs here love to be creative. My last visit I chowed down on an Alpaca Cheeseburger and it was amazing! It was very similar to beef, just a little lighter. You probably could not tell the difference if you did not know beforehand. This pub does have gaming. But let's face it; most of them do these days. However, what is good for people like me who do not like gaming, is that it is in a completely different wing to the restaurant and front bar. I really like that! During the summer months this beer garden is a great weekend hang out! There is an outdoor bar, plenty of space for all of your mates to have a good Sunday Session. Plus a super big tele if you wanna watch the footy. I rate this pub really well. If I lived closer, I would visit more often. Check it out!

The Leicester is in a class of its own. You'll find it on a quiet suburb street in Parkside, just off George Street (the city end of Duthy Street), but if you've never cut through Leicester Street (thanks to all the dead ends in Parkside), you wouldn't know it was there. It reminds me of those wonderful old-world London pubs; ageless and filled with a strong sense of community. The front bar is known as Liar's (I've never thought to ask why). The front bar is smallish (read: cosy), and wonderfully welcoming. Adding to its charm is the dark wood, exposed timber roof and painted plaster walls that don't travel all the way to the top, allowing the beautiful brick and stone walls to shine. The central bar runs three sides with the overhead filled with magnificent bottled brews. Stools are scattered around and are generally kept warm by the regular crowd from the surrounding streets. They are a friendly bunch and welcome newbies to their home away from home. The pool table doesn't have a whole lot of room to get around it, but that doesn't bother anyone; somehow they make it work. There's also a jukebox and a few games. The two flat screens show whatever sports are in season. The bistro, despite having little character, is busy nearly every night of the week. It draws a local crowd looking for a good home cooked meal for around 15 bucks and there are often large groups of families here, with numbers upwards of 12. There is a more formal restaurant out the back too called Liars Restaurant. I'd guess it seats 100, but I've never seen more than a few tables occupied. Given the food comes out of the kitchen, most people seem to accept to mediocre surrounds of the bistro for a meal half the price. I haven't been there but hear the private room upstairs is a great location for a party.

When I went to there on a Saturday afternoon, I was lucky enough to experience their outdoor seating in the beer garden. The beer garden is located at the northern edge of the hotel/pub. There are many large trees to take shade under and a range of barrels to sit at and enjoy a drink. For the beer garden, they had a window in the main building where you could order drinks. The drinks were well priced. One thing that I found pretty cool was that there was a person collecting beer glasses from tables once people were done. He even wore a shirt that said "glassy" on it. What was even more impressive than the humour with the shirt was the fact that he could carry around 40 glasses stacked up and still open the door to go inside. Some serious talent there! Although I did not end up selecting from their exquisite snack and meal menu for the beer garden, as the event I went to was catered, I managed to have a quick browse of the menu. The meals were around $20 or so, which is pretty good and they all sounded great. I will have to try some of them, the next time I go. As for the food at the catered event, I felt it was quite innovative, favoursome and well presented. The first item I had were sundried tomato and thyme pinwheels. It was a simple bite sized appetizer however the thyme and the sundried tomato paste went well together. The flatbread that held the ingredients together was also not too loose meaning that it could easily be eaten without a plate or napkin. The second appetizer was a Brie and Quince cracker. The watercracker had a thin slice of Brie at the base followed by a small rectangular prism of quince paste. It was a very simple yet effective appetizer. It is a shame I didn't get a photo of that one before I sent it on a one-way journey to my stomach. Appetizer the third was a samosa. It was filled with diced vegetables and was served hot. For this one, I thought ahead and grabbed a napkin and waited a minute for them to cool down. The same could not be said for the other people at the table who endured went straight in and found it to be quite hot indeed. The samosa was served with what appeared to be a chive sauce. The sauce was tasty and complemented the flavor of the samosa and it's spiced vegetable contents quite well. The fourth appetizer was a prawn wrapped in a fancy tempura batter. I am not a big seafood lover however I broke of the tip of the batter and found it to be quite nice. Appetizer number 5 were sausage rolls and mini pasties. And the best part was, they looked like they were made at the hotel and not bought from a supermarket! The worst part was, they ran out by the time they got to me cause most people took two of them (a pastie and a sausage roll each). The sixth and final appetizer was a thin strip of crumbed fish served with tartare sauce. I had a nice sized piece which unfortunately broke when I dipped it in the tartare sauce, however I was fortunately able to savage it. The batter was nice and not too oily. It was well crumbed and the fish was fresh. If these appetizers are anything like the food on the menu, then I will definitely be going back. The surroundings were lovely and it was the perfect spot to spend the afternoon.

From the outside, the building looks like your standard tavern, however on the inside, it is quite well refurbished with a giant fireplace, a small games room and a wide variety of paintings and art. In terms of sizing proportions, they are quite decent. I had a half schnitzel for around $15 for lunch and it was the perfect size. It was crumbed well, cooked nicely and was served in a very tasty, yet not too overpowering pepper gravy. The chips it was served with were very crispy and lightly salted. It was served on a small plate with a mini bowl of garden salad, which was nice however could have done with some dressing. Staff were attentive, not too obtrusive and had a likeable personality. The waiting service works when everyone was paying on the same credit card, which was fortunate as we had a large group with one card. If you don't pay all on the same card, then there is no waiting service and you must pay individually at the main counter. The staff recommended the garlic breads and chilli cheese breads as entrees before our main meal. The garlic bread was satisfactory however the cheese bread was quite bland and lacked good flavour. It was around 20 mins after ordering that these breads came out and around another 30 mins before dinner. All in all, for pub grub, I was quite impressed. The venue has a good range of rooms and areas. From what I have heard, the tavern hosts good functions and caters well for such events. I would definitely come back to try a Tonsley burger, which quite a few of my family members tried while there for lunch, it certainly looked nice.

Still, they make this place look really cool. Okay, I have only ever been into the front bar, or should I say The Chrysler Bar, but then again, why would you want to go anywhere else here (unless of course it is the bottle shop for some takeaway). Hey, they even have a couple of cars embedded in the walls, though once again, like the oil cans, I am not sure if they ever where real cars. Now, what really surprised me was the menu. They had sliders. I thought the only place you got sliders was in some trendy pub in Melbourme, and the Tonsley is far from a trendy pub, and yep, they do sliders. All I can say is that this place is cool (though legend has it that back in the days it was a very popular nightclub).
