We loved this restaurant and enjoyed all our dishes. The good thing about small plates, at modest prices, is if a member of your party doesn't care for a dish it's no big deal. The salads, the kebabs, the dips, the seafood... everything was first rate as was the service. Only dish that faltered (and we had 10 among four of us) was the moussaka. Terrific meal! They need to pay more attention to their Yelp listing - there's a full bar, excellent cocktails, and they take credit cards - despite the Yelp listing.

As I get further into my twenties, I've found that restaurants have an increasing tendency to play their music very loud. I'm sorry, and call me old fashioned, but one of the main things about going out for dinner is that you are there to have a conversation with the person you are with. I'm not there to get my groove on. Anyway, I digress. I really enjoy Greek/Turkish and Middle Eastern Food which is what this place specialises in. We chose some mezze plates including the chicken souvlaki, soutzoukakia (meatballs), the Moroccan Chicken Tagine and the Loukaniko. It was mouth watering. It was great value too, the portion sizes were manageable and we left very happy customers.

For me, this shows the power of online research or word of mouth - although Saffy's is easily accessible in Ayr town centre and just across from the Mercure Hotel, it is not at all on the main drag. But Saffy's is highly ranked on Tripadvisor. What we have here is a forty cover (estimate) bistro which doesn't really catch the eye from the street. You can't really see much through the windows, and nothing of the signage or the standard Ayr old sandstone building gives any clues. Inside, the ambience is informally elegant and friendly - one of our waitress was good enough, but the head waitress was outstanding in terms of bubbly and informative communication. From the website, Saffy's looks to be a chef-patron place of a former head chef of local upmarket country hotel Enterkine House. One nice touch for the foodies amongst us is that the chef has kindly stored his cookbook collection in two full height bookshelves front of house, with an implied invitation to diners to browse - I could have happily spent several hours doing just that! Foodwise, there is a line on Saffy's website that 'good food doesn't have to be expensive' or words to that effect. I would say both our mains were good food with unfussy presentation, with a bit of labour cost saved by skipping any attempt at fancy plating. Mother had a korma-type curry of market vegetables which she really enjoyed. I didn't get a taste, but it sounded as though there were some veg in there which would be unlikely to feature at your average curry house - think celeriac, sweet potatoes. My main course was roasted veg and brocolli over sautéed potatoes topped with melting brie - not outstanding, but a wholesome meal with which I was well pleased. Vegetarian choices on the menu were impressively extensive and imaginative compared with the small number of other Modern British venues I've visited. In Ayrshire, I wouldn't be surprised if Saffy's is a better choice for vegetarians than any of the upmarket mini-chains - Costley, Simpsinns, Buzzworks. I read out the dessert menu to mother and we both decide on crème brûlée, which is turns out mother has extensive previous experience of. This came as a small ramekin on a side plate, with a rhubarb compote at the bottom of the ramekin, beneath the custard, and three mini-shortbreads on the side (see photos). Whereas the mains felt good value at £9 or so, £4.50 each (from memory) for the desserts felt a bit steep. Although there weren't any 'mistakes' to warrant sending them back, mother had been expecting a hot pudding and was disappointed when they were served cold. Also, the combined sweetness of the brûlée topping and the 'jammy' rhubarb compote was too much for both our palates. All in all, Saffy's was just right for a nice evening meal out with a parent of advanced years. By 7.30pm, the place was busy with couples of various ages, what looked like families on holiday and mixed-age ladies' night out. However, I do have a few niggles. I felt the presentation of the food could have been a bit more elegant. And while I liked the mix-and-match décor , some of the furniture looked a bit worse for wear - scratched glass, worn corners on wooden veneer. While I sympathise that modern furniture isn't constructed for sanding down and revarnishing, I felt that the oil-stained placemats smacked of a place needing just a bit more TLC. If mother had her way, we would be going straight back to Saffy's during my next visit north - I would have no complaints if we did.

I was in the company of others and one suggested Italian food, as this was the nearest we came here instead. There was a lunch special on, this was a two course for £6 two of us ate of this menu while the other two guests ate of the Al a carte. We all ordered starters which was *chicken & chickpeas in tomato sauce *breaded mozzarella sticks & spicy tomato dip *mussels in white whine & cream *smoked salmon & prawn Marie rose All the starters that came out looked pretty good, and you received quite a fair amount of food for your money, with some items I would have questioned would they have even made any money on them at all. Main courses where *prawn tagliatelle *beef & tomato pasta *Cajun chicken with fries Fetta cheese salad Everyone enjoyed their main courses with the the only negative was that there was too much food placed on the plates, with little thought to presentation or garnish to the dish, main courses where all served on cold plates, even though the restaurant looked good it still was rather dark. The biggest surprise of all was the food bill, a table of four having a two course meal was only £50 bang on. I enjoyed my visit here and would go back knowing that the food is pretty good, this would rate a pretty good 5*

It is also very close to the cinema which was good as we were off to the cinema after our meal. Upon entering we were quickly seated in a booth. We liked the decor of the place and the semi privacy offered by the booths. Menus were handed to us and drink orders taken. Our drinks arrived promptly and we placed our orders - Mozzarella Sticks and Penne ala Crema for him and Bruschetta followed by Spaghetti mia casa for myself. The starters arrived quickly enough but not before a waiter attempted to give us someone else's calamari starter! The boyfriends' two mozzarella sticks seemed a small portion and my bruschetta was a large slice of bread with fresh cherry tomatoes and was nice enough but I've had better elsewhere, the bread hadn't been toasted long enough. Our plates were cleared, new cutlery was set down and we were left to wait....and wait.....and wait. The waitress appeared after a time and asks "would you like some coffees or anything else?" and rather surprised I look back at her and say "no..." she was about to dash off when I managed to add "we're still waiting on our mains". The waitress gasps and runs away without saying anything. We shrug our shoulders and continue our conversation and during this wait I notice that the waiters really don't seem to know who ordered what. I watched a waiter wander around with a slice of cake for about 10 minutes before he managed to find the correct person! Our mains finally arrived and appeared to be good, freshly prepared food. The meals were simple but with good flavour and I only wish I'd had enough forethought to have ordered some garlic bread to soak up the remainder of the sauce. Plates were cleared and we opted for the dessert option on the pre theatre menu seeing as we had a bit of time to kill before our movie. Again we waited a fair amount of time before the waitress arrived once again to ask if we wanted coffees, no but we would like to see the menu please. We each chose the chocolate fudge cake and then found ourselves faced with another rather lengthy wait for dessert. During this time I amused myself by watching waiters wander around with plates of food asking fellow diners "did you order this?" and then wandering off upon finding it to be the wrong diner. I spotted our desserts about 5 minutes before they arrived as the waiter was over at the other end of the restaurant asking if they belonged to other people. The desserts finally made their way over to our tables and our ice cream had transformed to a puddle of cream but nevertheless still rather tasty. Getting our bill involved another 10 minutes of trying to catch a waiter's eye but it finally arrived, we paid up and left. We enjoyed the food well enough and for a pre theatre meal I'd say it was worth it. I honestly had the impression that the waiting staff had just shown up as new starts for the first time ever that day and been told to get on with it as they seemed to be without a clue. They were all friendly enough, they just appeared somewhat distracted. I might go back for the pre theatre deal but I would never pay full price for this place unless the service improved. I'd also say that despite advertising itself as being Mediterranean, the focus is largely upon typical Italian fare and it would be nice to see a wider choice of Mediterranean options on the menu, especially considering the restaurants close proximity to at least 3 other Italians within a block of this place. Nice enough for a pre theatre meal but it could be better.

Piccolo Mondo is close to Glasglow Central Station, on a very uninviting street. Despite the somewhat negative exterior setting, inside it's welcoming and traditional. We found the service to be friendly and efficient; unfortunately, while the food was AOK it was nowhere near as good as the reviews had led us to believe :-( For my starter, I had the house specialty - Potted Prawns, served in a warm creamy sauce with thin grissini sticks. It was OK, but I doubt I'd order it again. For my entrée I had the Seafood Risotto, which came with too much Calamari in a slightly spicy sauce with prawns and mussels - decidedly unappealing... Overall, it was an average Italian meal for too high a price in very busy surroundings. Better to find an exceptional meal elsewhere.

This time we were meant to be going somewhere else, but this place really impressed. From the outside, it looks just like a casual takeaway but there's actually a restaurant out the back too. Rocco had booked us a table and we had the space to ourselves which was quite fun. Looking over the menu there was a really impressive selection and I'd say most people should be able to find something they'd be excited to order. Of course I went for the aubergine starter (imam bayildi) which is served cold and in tomato sauce. The aubergine had been cooked for a long time so it was lovely and soft and incredibly delicious. It was also really nice to have a cold starter as it was quite refreshing. For mains, I had the chicken shish which came with rice. It could've used some kind of sauce I thought, maybe some yoghurt but I did really enjoy it. It was a generous size portion and I couldn't actually finish it in the end. While this restaurant is pretty casual I felt like we were well looked after, and the bill came to around £16 per person which I thought was reasonable for two courses and many soft drinks. It's handy for a pre-drink at the Laurieston too.

The first time I walked past this place I did have a bit of a laugh about the name, it really doesn't look like much from the outside. I really did wonder what we'd be in for as we gathered in an empty back room for International Food night.. Thankfully initial impressions don't always ring true as this was a rather enjoyable evening. So yes, Falafel & Houmous were ordered & devoured as I'd worked up quite an appetite that day. To be honest, you could easily have 1 starter & 1 main course between two, which would mean you could try the Baklava (you know you want to!) The Houmous was really good, it was flavourful and had the perfect consistency for spreading on the mountain of fresh flatbread that accompanied it. I think I could've kept eating it until I keeled over! The Falafel plate that came out as my main course was huge. Thankfully about 1/3 of it was salad so that I didn't end up overdosing on chickpeas, as the other 2/3 of the plate was Falafel & (more) Houmous. The Falafel was a little overcooked on the outside, but it was perfectly cooked on the inside. Oh yeah did I mention there was yet more flatbread! After that meal I figured I'd carb loaded for the rest of the month, it was about 49% chickpeas, 49% flatbread & about 2% salad & drinks. The great thing about Kervan Palace is despite the modest surroundings, the food was pretty authentic & tasty, the seemingly lone member of staff was really friendly and obliging (despite having a group of 14 hungry Yelpers & 8 folk up front watching Fenerbache v Ajax). I have to say I've thought about going back for another taste of the Houmous & Imam Bayildi, which means that this seemingly hidden wee gem has found itself another fan!

One of the places she recommended was 'BABS, and after looking at the menu online we decided to try it. It turned out to be one of the best culinary experiences we've had. The place is not large, the ceilings are low and the noise level can be a little distracting. However, even though we didn't have reservations, we were quickly seated. When a larger table became available, we were offered that one instead. We had the sense that this was very much a family-run business and that they really love what they do. We were quite hungry, so we ordered the Mezze Platter for Two which was very reasonably priced at 22.5£/per person. For our four-dip starter we chose the Tzatziki, Sundried Tomato Hummus, Classic Hummus and Babaganoush which came with small pitas that were themselves spiced. All were delicious and we could have easily filled up on just these. Our main courses were chicken shish, chicken souvlaki, lamb shish and king prawns. All were extremely tasty. The platter also came with two side dishes and for these we chose the Basmati Rice and the Beef Doner Fries. The rice was an excellent complement to the main courses, but because by this time we were so full we ate the Beef topping but left the fries. We loved 'BABS so much that a couple of weeks later when we had a three-hour layover in Glasgow between trains, we went back to 'BABS for lunch. The return visit did not disappoint. We would wholeheartedly recommend 'BABS to anyone dining out in Glasgow. It's well worth it.
