Unfortunately, the experience went downhill the moment I walked in. One employee immediately gave me a harsh look and stared at me from across the room. I didn't even realize he worked there at first, so I tried to move out of his line of sight. Another employee eventually approached me, and I explained that it was my first visit and I wanted to look around before asking questions. He was friendly and helpful -- I honestly wish he had been the one assisting me the whole time. Instead, the first employee eventually came over and asked if I needed anything, but his tone and body language made me feel unwelcome, as if he wanted me to leave rather than browse. It took the excitement out of what should have been a fun first visit. Bottom line: the store itself was great, but the attitude from that particular employee made the experience uncomfortable and disappointing.

She never expected to find a store with such great selection of wool felts and wool pieces. The store was huge and very sewing craft focused, with embroidery, quilting, and wool felting materials. It's pretty a niche hobby shop because it exclusively caters to these kinds of projects (as opposed to knitting, crocheting, etc). It has everything you could think of for the types of sewing hobbies that the store caters to, however. Highly recommend a visit for anyone into sewing crafts! Everyone working there has their own crafting specialty and is very knowledgeable about it.

There were a lot of people just sitting around and talking (i.e. not there to play just to "hang") and it made it hard to walk around the store. It would be nice if there was a separate room for them to play or "hang" in the store. Not a lot of parking on a Saturday night either because of they share their lot with a very busy Olive Garden.

In fact, when in the beginning I would go over to his house and he would do his work there. Over the years, he has opened up several shops and the business has slowly grown. It isn't the largest of train stores, but they don't carry any of the low-end, junk stuff that will break easily. I have heard that they are moving again to Greece, which ironically will be just a mile or so from where I used to live when I was in the Rochester area.

Walt's is a pretty big hobby shop, with a wide variety of stuff, including RC cars and planes,…read moreplastic models, model rockets, and lots of random supplies for making cool stuff, including paints, balsa, dowels, glues, etc. And as big as it is, there's an even bigger space out back with an RC car track, a crawler track, and even an extra meeting room. That's where Walt's really shines -- long after the posted hours, they open the space to all sorts of local hobby groups. I've been there with a rocket club in the back room, RC cars going on the track, and yet another group up front, meeting in the actual hobby shop part. The staff is super-friendly, and willing to help out and offer suggestions for whatever kind of project you want to take on. If you need hobby stuff, this is a great place to go in the Syracuse area.
