Lancaster Smokehouse is a local favorite, we typically do pickups as they are really busy. But this time we ate in. The parking lots is usually full, but there is free street parking across the road. Just drive around and see where everyone is parking. The smokehouse has large seating on the ground floor and event space on the upper. There are lots of tables and booths to seat any party size, they also take reservations. We went with 6 people and all around us were groups. The main area seems to be able to sit 50+ at least. Service staff are great, they refill and provide all the containers you'll need to get going. We ordered the Family Deal and couldn't finish. Most people have take out bags when they leave. It's that type of place. - we got the 1 lb pulled pork, 6 smoked chicken wings, beef brisket, and full rack of ribs - mac & cheese, red beans & rice, dilly coleslaw - sweet potato fries, and tater tots It took about 30+ mins for the food to come out since they needed to put everything together. We finished maybe 40% of it. The rest were another two meals at home. Over the years, the price has gone up considerably, but the quality and quantity is still a great value. Definitely bring a group and any visitors from out of town. From previous visits their pig tails, sausage are also great. My favorite is the ribs, mac & cheese, red beans & rice, and the tater tots though. The service was also excellent--staff were friendly, attentive, and made us feel very welcome throughout our visit. What really made the evening special was the thoughtful surprise at the end. Honestly my favourite place to eat when I visit Waterloo. I came here with my parents for my convocation dinner as well. The bbq here is just too good! I can't recommend enough. Update: Back three years later, and it just wasn't like how it used to be Food: Had the three meat platter to share. The quantity of food is still the same, with the plate filled with enough meat and sides for two people to share. However, the quality has went downhill (maybe it was a one-off situation because we visited on a holiday). The brisket was served at room temperature and almost cold, and the pull pork was quite dry without dipping it into barbeque sauce. The ribs were decent, being nice and tender and everything was sauced well. It was just a bit disappointing that the flavour wasn't deep and the food wasn't hot. Great place to stop along the way to St. Jacob's Market! Staff is super friendly! And it seemed genuine. Restaurant wasn't very busy on a Saturday early afternoon for lunch. We got a Platter of 3 Meats to share between 2 people. It was more than enough and there were leftovers! It literally looked like we just finished the 2 sides and didn't even touch the meats. Out of the 3 Meats: Pulled Pork, Ribs, & Beef Brisket (+$3), I liked the Pulled Pork the most! But again, portion was quite generous and nothing was dry. Everything was tender, not dry. My only complaint is that everything, including the sides (french fries, mac & cheese), were on the blander side. I'm not salt person, but I expect a certain level of seasoning esp at BBQ restaurants. Some people may prefer their meats under rather than over seasoned, but I'm just speaking as a personal preference. Fries could've been crispier. After a long drive from Toronto to check out St. Jacobs for our semi annual visit (complete with apple fritters of course), my friend brought up this smokehouse nearby. We werent sure what the expect but when someone says (in a previous review) they needed takeout boxes, we were intrigued but skeptical. Since we had just ploughed through a half a dozen of apple fritters, we weren't super hungry so we decided to share a platter. The price difference between a 2 meater and a 3 meater is only$2, so that was a no brainer. We weren't sure how big the platters would be but since we've been to Adamson we definitely didn't think it'd be enough. We added on the rib ends just in case... We were stunned by how much food they had!! Two full chicken wings, six ribs and a solid pile of brisket. The onions rings were quite sad....we think they forget to double fry them. The coleslaw got a pass but the rib ends were...much less than stellar. The texture was similar to that of sweet and sour pork in Chinese restaurants. Noooo thank you. Service was great and we can see why the place was quite packed on a Thursday at lunch time. Portions really ARE huge!! Great value for sure but it doesn't overtake any of the Toronto smokehouse (namely Cherry St BBQ or Adamson). I've known the owner Chris since his days of serving BBQ out of the red BBQ shed at his house, followed by Hog Tails and finally here at Lancaster Smokehouse. One thing that always rings true no matter where he is serving food up: if Chris is serving it you are probably getting the best version of that dish available. Ribs, brisket, sausage, heck even the side dishes are delicious. Ridiculously good! Chris has travelled extensively on the BBQ circuit and has perfected his craft by going up against the best. Today I had the two meat platter for lunch with ribs and brisket. The brisket is so moist and delicious with a dark bark, it doesn't get any better. As I was enjoying the ribs, I kept thinking about those somewhat misinformed posts about ribs "falling off the bone." Texas ribs don't fall off the bones, they have texture and need a proper bite to release the goods. As usual, Lancaster delivers the perfect version. A local and authentic southern restaurant. It's a bit far so you definitely need a car. The meats are delicious and barbequed just right to my taste. The sides were also excellent. One thing I can tell you is that you will be FULL after Lancaster. I highly recommend ordering their "Platters" since you get to try all types of meats they offer, as well as yummy sides. 3 Meats 2 Sides is the best in terms of value and food portions. You'd think that you save more by ordering 5 meats or 4 meats. The problem is, they only increase the portion of sides (notice they say LARGE sides), the meat portion doesn't change. They also add a bunch of cornbreads which no one can finish. If you think by ordering more meats and splitting it among a group of friends you'd get more value, then you're wrong. I usually get 3 meats 2 sides and pack it home for next day's lunch. If you order 2 meats you might be able to finish it in 1 go if you're a big eater. In terms of meat, I recommend beaf briskets (must get) + chicken + ribs/wings. For sides, definitely get the mac & cheese (very rich taste). The onion rings are gigantic and tastes good, but the dough is too thick for me (it's like eating a donut per onion ring and it stuffs you). I always get the sweet potato fries. I come to Lancaster when I would like to feast and celebrate. You can pack home whatever you don't finish to-go and it'll still taste amazing once you heat it up again (you won't get tired of it!) It's a hidden gem in Waterloo and not many people know of it due to its remote location from Campus. My only regret is that I haven't visited the place earlier. Deep with Waterloo is the Lancaster Smokehouse. Last nite (Dec 28/18) the places was very busy but it didn't take us long to get a table. We ordered the rib-tips as a appetizer along with a Caesar Salad (I was charged $0.50 for a small container of Caesar Salad Dressing)! This is based on a $9.00 Caesar for a pile of lettuce! The rib tips were batted & deep fried. They were ALL batter it appeared. At the bottom of the bowl was a pool of grease. So we didn't finish them & they had virtually no taste We split a platter. Our was 3 Meats, 2 Sides & one corn bread. The meat was pulled pork (excellent), beef brisket (super fatty & didn't eat much of it) & andouille sausage ( 2 huge chunks of grizzle) that turned me off & we didn't finish. Sides were beer battered onion rings which were good but they didn't remove the outer skin so I couldn't eat em! The other was coleslaw which had no taste. Note; the beef ribs were very good! Listen folks, this was mediocre food from an otherwise very dirty restaurant (the floors were black with filth). I really doubt I'd go here again. Lancaster Smokehouse has a reputation as one of the best restaurants in Waterloo/Kitchener. A lot of new students don't really know about it since it is pretty far if you're commuting. I've been here a few times now and it is one of the best places to eat smoked barbecue in Ontario. I could see myself coming from Toronto just to eat here. This place is really popular and gets pretty busy on evenings and weekends. On Friday and Saturday nights there is a 45 minute wait time sometimes. The menu has a large variety of meats but I'd suggest you get a platter to try the different meats. The first time I came here I thought I could finish the 3 meat platter myself and boy was I wrong. Usually, me and my friends either share a 5 meat platter, or if it's just me and another person a 3 meat platter is enough (or you can just take the rest in a take-away box). My favourite meat here is the beef brisket - it is just so tender. Next would have to be the pulled pork - same thing, really tender and smokey flavour. I'm not too much of a fan of the ribs because they are really tough. I like ribs that just fall off the bone but I kind of find myself gnawing on rib for a bit haha. The sides are okay, I had the mac n cheese which seemed a bit bland but you don't come here for the mac! All in all, a great place, very reasonable prices and tasty meat. read more

Would have been nice to know all what they were out of while waiting for a table rather than telling me they are out of chicken after a 20 minute wait and on the way to my table. So as there was no chicken I decided on the 2 meat platter with 2 sides and cornbread. Decided on the brisket and ribs with mac and cheese and coleslaw for the sides. Both the ribs and the brisket were over sauced for my liking. The ribs were also quite small. The Mac and cheese wasn't so good either with the cheese sauce being quite soupy. I ended up clicking on the restaurant button on Google Maps and The Lancaster Smokehouse was the first restaurant to pop up. Saw some pictures people posted and we were sold. We ended up ordering the 3 meats plus 2 sides each that way we could try all the meats and different sides and we weren't disappointed, we actually had to take food home. You know a smokehouse restaurant is exactly that when you park the car and all you smell is the meat being smoked and cooked. All the meat was so tender and soft and those were some of the biggest ribs I've ever come across in my whole life!! Their Mac and cheese was so creamy and cheesy, their slaw was the perfect consistency, those were some of the BIGGEST onion rings I've ever seen in my life but they weren't too battery and their fries were perfectly cooked. Their cornbread was probably my favourite cornbread I've ever eaten. I was visiting Waterloo on a Saturday so we decided to stop by Lancaster in the afternoon, just after the lunch rush. Best decision ever. My only regret is that I didn't take advantage of this beauty of a place in my years of university! There are a ton of different options and platters for you to try. The waitress was really friendly and gave her opinion at what may be best for the two of us. We ended up with a 3 meat platter, which includes 2 small sides, and 1 cornbread. I thought that the portions of each meat would juts be small, but they piled those on the plate! You can't double up on meat for the 2 meat or 3 meat platter so we got the ribs, pulled pork, and brisket. We decided to get mac n cheese and coleslaw as sides. Both also so good. UGH IT WAS JUST TOO GOOD. We also decided to get a small poutine and added brisket on top. The fries itself were delicious, but the gravy made it that much more great. The pieces of brisket were fattier than the brisket on our platters, and it was soooo goooood. Don't know what we were thinking, but I guess we just weren't expecting the portions to be so big. It is higher recommended that you come with a big group because the portions here are gigantic, with plates as wide as a person, definitely worth the price. I came with a group of 10 and we ordered platters (rib, pulled pork, brisket, smoked whole wing), sides (sweet potato fries, onion rings, coleslaw, cheesy grits, cornbreads) and some pigtails. We didn't hesitate to grab the food with our hands and dig our faces into the meats -- this is definitely the type of restaurant to let loose. My personal favorites include ribs (longest ribs I have ever seen), chicken wings, sweet potato fries, onion rings, and the pigtails. I have been to Lancaster several times throughout the years and it's by FAR my favourite barbecue restaurant ever. I've had the platters that come with 2 southern style sides, fried chicken dinner, Nashville hot chicken, po'boys and LOTS of caesars! A little spicy and tangy and I usually hate a celery salt Rimmer. The fried chicken meals are crisp to perfection and come with 2 sides as well. This restaurant is the little happening place here! The parking lot was completely packed to the point we had to park on the opposite street. It appeared to be a good sign so far. There was a 30 minute wait and we decided to wait for it I mean southern soul food for an Atlanta lady? I'll take the wait thank you! When our number was called, it felt like we had won the lottery! I think I might of even yelled "Yippie!" We were seated at a nice table and we could tell that everyone around us was literally enjoying their food. There was a man playing music and was good if I must say so myself! The food I was a tad disappointed in! Again, I don't know if I need to just give up on the soul food here in Canada and just stick to eating the good stuff when I go back home to visit. But seriously! I ordered a gumbo soup to start, it tasted more smokey then anything savoury. The husband ordered the two meat platter and I went for the three meat platter. Go big or go home right? I choose chicken, ribs and pulled pork. The ribs were alright in my opinion, The chicken was cold and the pulled pork was the redeeming quality of the platter. I decided on mac n cheese and cheesy grits for my sides. I had one bite of each and decided to never put those things in my mouth again! My husband had the brisket and chicken. His chicken was warm but he even made a comment about the chicken not being good. In the end, I ended up walking away yearning for some good soul food.
