Vinny does excellent work. All of my knives he touched came back much sharper than factory. He uses a metrics based approach based on pressure required to cut a string. I took a 8" chef's knife to him because I had dropped it and the tip stuck in the floor. Momentum caused the tip to bend badly but not break(before photo shown). Vinny had a special plier tool that was able to straighten the tip back into line with no heating or material loss. Then he put a wicked edge on it! The first thing I noticed about Vinny Murgolo, The Knife Guy, was that his website was the most professional and nicest-looking of all the other websites that came up in my search engine when I typed in "knife sharpening Reno" or something to that effect. The website was clear and up front about pricing -- no guesswork required, no unpleasant surprises, and none of the discomfort that comes from having to discover the price for the very first time from a live human being and then having to communicate to them whether or not you will do business with them based on that knowledge. I called three businesses that Saturday morning during their posted regular business hours, but did not leave a message for anyone. So I was pleasantly surprised when I received a call back from Vinny a little bit later. He told me he was at a knife convention at the Nugget, but had seen my missed call. He said he would give me a call as he was leaving after about 4 p.m. I asked him if that was truly ok, since that would put him past his posted regular business hours and he said it was totally fine. True to his word, he called me as he was leaving the convention and I headed straight to his workshop with my mom, with whom I had been running errands. When we got to his workshop, he came out to greet us and invited us both to watch the whole process. He was extremely kind to both of us and I was particularly appreciative of the respect and deference he showed my mom. A true gentleman and family man, clearly. My mom chose to stay in the car due to some bad sciatica and mobility issues, but I got to watch everything and he explained the process to me from beginning to end with great care and earnestness, indulging my curiosity and answering all my questions. It was fascinating and I really wish that I had taken a video or at least pictures of it. He has this special scale that he uses at the beginning and end of the process to compare how much force it took before and after to cut through a filament -- and it is very much a big difference! Plus he has a magnet underneath the sharpening tool to catch all the shavings and a glass of water to cool off the blades at intervals during the process to prevent overheating. My favorite thing was how clearly passionate and invested he is in doing this work and in continuing to learn about it and better himself constantly, as clearly evidenced by the fact that he was at a literal knife-sharpening convention earlier that same day! This is clearly an artisan who strives to continually perfect his craft... and he is a firefighter the rest of the time!! Fascinating human being! Vinny sharpened a total of four knives of varying sizes for us that day and I don't think it took him much more than like twenty minutes or so in total. This was excellent because his workshop is a tiny bit of a ways from where either my mom or I live, plus these are our go-to knives for everyday use, so dropping them off and returning on a later date to pick them up would have been minorly inconvenient for us in more than one way. When all was said and done, he put the freshly-sharpened knives in these great custom sheathes made out of nice heavy cardboard that he cut down to size and then basically gift-wrapped it all beautifully with a handwritten "thank you" note on top and a literal bow -- well, the string wrapped in the shape of a bow! I was so surprised by that. He told us he would follow up in the days to come to make sure that the knives were meeting our expectations and make sure we were satisfied. We said our good-byes as the sun finished setting and drove off very satisfied, indeed. He did follow up later that week and was pleased to know that we were happy with the job he had done. We remain very impressed with the level of attention, customer service, craftsmanship, and all-around care from beginning to end of this process, and will surely be returning to The Knife Guy the next time any of our knives need sharpening. My husband took our kitchen set and a pocket knife to Vinny on a Friday and he had them finished same day. Price was extremely fair ($-$$) and the knives were beatiful upon return (any imperfections from before were gone). We even asked for a razor sharp edge on the pocket knife and that required a bevel adjustment.
