Came on a Monday night with a friend. Food: Really like the menu. Lots of diversity to choose from, and the prices are reasonable. We started with a couple of specialty cocktails. I had the Sazerac, and my friend had the OG Old Fashioned. Both were well made, and there was plenty of alcohol in each. For an appetizer, we got the Frogs on the Mound, which, as you can imagine, is 1/2 lb of frog legs on haystack onion rings. I haven't had frog legs in a while, and I thought these were very good. The breading was light, well seasoned, and not overcooked. The haystack onion rings were just okay. They could have been hotter and maybe seasoned (or just salted) a bit more. For our entrees, I got the Blackened Catfish, and he got the Grouper Tacos. Both of these meals were also very good. The blackened fish was the best part of my meal. It was excellently seasoned, cooked to the right temperature, and moist and flaky. Delicious! The collard greens were good, but would have been better with just a bit more pork. More pork is always better. The rice and beans were good too, but the temperature was less than hot. My friend enjoyed his Grouper Tacos, and the bite he shared with me was very good, except for the green peppers. I much prefer orange or yellow peppers, but I realize that's a personal taste issue. The tacos tasted fresh, the fish was tender, and the portions were good. Service: The place was about a quarter full. Even though we weren't in a hurry, the service got off to a bit of a slow start. After getting waters and menus, it took a while for our server to get back to us. I started to worry that this might be an issue for the rest of the evening, so I made a point of getting their attention. After that, things went smoothly. After ordering appetizers and entrees, the food came out in a timely fashion. All the staff we interacted with were helpful and friendly. Thanks, Sarah 1 and Sarah 2 :) Atmosphere: Besides the separate bar area, the dining room is a big open space with lots of four-top tables spread around. Around the walls there are posters, art pieces, and plenty of Mardi Gras beads. I wasn't sure at the time, but there was something a bit cramped about the interior. After looking at the pictures, I think it might have to do with the low, tiled ceiling. (I think this is the first time I have ever mentioned something about a tiled ceiling.) On this night, it was quiet and easy to have a comfortable conversation. Glad that we finally stopped in for a meal. With the exception of the initial service delay and some small issues with a couple of food items, it was a very good meal. Would definitely want to stop back again to try other parts of the menu.

Okay, I'm going to dish in a second. But overall - Maxie's…read moreis a super cool vibe. The colors, the well-placed low lighting, the appropriate volume of cajun music ... all done in excellent taste. The waitstaff is INCREDIBLE. They all seem to be having a great time, when it's slow, and when it's busy, which is important to see; plus, they help each other out. Waiters, bartenders, bussers, hosts, food-runners - they're often smiling and helpful to anyone. Not only did our waiter Scotty take amazing care of us (a group of 10 on a Saturday night, all arriving at different times; and he had many other tables besides us), but his teammates helped bring drinks, clear the table, and our deliver our food. Everything was timely, fresh, and as far as I know, no errors were made with drinks or food. We were all quite satisfied with our meal. The reason I give 3 stars is, for some reason I do not understand, near the end of our meal, we heard a man yelling quite loudly from the kitchen area AT OUR SERVER. The man (manager I assume) was insisting that Scotty was not attentive to us (and I can't discern a single reason why this would be claimed). Even if he noticed something we didn't -- it could have been a moment of quiet criticism, but this dude turned it into a screaming fit. And he could not have been more wrong. In fact overhearing this exchange (right around the corner, within full earshot of us and the back half of the restaurant) was the ONLY thing that soured our otherwise amazing experience. We then watched who I assume was the same guy (red-faced and angry) sit down at a table very close to us, and our server return a moment later somewhat shaken up. It was awful. We made sure to congratulate him loudly on his impeccable service after that. I don't know if the manager heard or not. But one can hope. This was not my first time here, but it was the first time I've experienced anything like this. Like I said, the team seems solid, our service is always timely and kind (and often, incredibly FUN) even when they're PACKED, the food is bangin', the oysters are fresh and delicious, and EVERYTHING is well priced & spiced! So we will be back. But we really hated seeing our waiter treated like that. For anyone who doesn't know - waiters in WI currently make $2.33/hour. This is below the federal wage rate of $7.25/hour for the same job. They survive off your tips. If they're good, they're great, and GOD BLESS THEM - they must do what they do because they love people. This manager did not seem to appreciate what he had right in front of him. But we did!!!! GO SCOTTY GOOOOO

Needless to say, it was crowded and lively, but our table was waiting for us and we were sat immediately. Our server was friendly, attentive, and very helpful with our menu choices, which were limited due to their Madi Gras-only offerings, but also plentiful and varied. My husband decided on the jambalaya, I went with the crawfish étouffée, and we split the roasted Cajun cauliflower as an appetizer. While it's hard for this kind of stew-like, saucy, veggie/sausage/seafood over rice mixtures to present beautifully, everything looked, smelled, and tasted delicious. The jambalaya had a little more of a kick than I prefer, but my husband loved it and my crawfish étouffée had the perfect amount of spice without being spicy. The roasted cauliflower was cooked to perfection and was the perfect way to start the meal. Not pictured is the bananas foster bread pudding that was the perfect way to end it. We both left with extra food to take home and the memory of a wonderful meal and great experience.

We ordered our lunches, a wrap and salmon salad. It took quite a while to get our lunches. There was a large party dining at the same time, so maybe that was the reason, but my friend had to get back to work and was getting a bit anxious. She said that her wrap was good. But my salmon salad was amazing! It had a perfectly cooked plant of salmon, with fresh spinach leaves, segments of orange and grapefruit, diced beats and a delicious horseradish dressing. It was served in a bowl, nothing to look at , but so tasty. It think serving it on a plate would have shown off the ingredients better. We had to wait a bit to get our check, too. If you don't have much time, I wouldn't recommend, but if you have time, please try The Bay. (A third member of our party had to leave after ordering her wrap due to a family emergency. The server kindly stopped her order and did not charge us. So kind of him.)

My husband and I shared the cubano sandwich and the buffalo cauliflower bites. Those cauli bites were fire, I could order those everytime and be happy! Wasn't the biggest fan of the cubano though. We had a group of 8 and were seated right away on a Wednesday. We got there in time to order a few $5 apps from the happy hour menu. We all liked the elote fritters! The walleye and crab cakes were also good. We all tried something different. Between the NOLA Salmon, Ahi Tacos, Shrimp Cobb, Spicy Pasta, and even the cheeseburger sliders. Everyone really enjoyed their meals. They even brought out an Apple Pie for my dad's birthday! The only complaint I had is it was very slow. From ordering, to getting our food, and the longest wait was for our bill. With a 1.5 year old, we were eager to get going but waited about a half hour after finishing dinner to get the bill. Prices are pretty fair for the quality and quantity you get. Definitely would still go back, just not if we were in a rush!

Meh. But sandwich was solid. Others had chicken and waffles and double smash burger. Both were clean plated. Chicken and waffles were huge too! Surprised my bud finished them. He's like one of those thin people that could do competitive eating if they had a long distance version. Not speed just long steady stuffing that surprises you how much they can eat. Will come back. St. Paul Fish Market is located inside the very busy and popular Milwaukee Public Market indoor shopping complex downtown. It reminds me of the Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle. The only parking option that I am aware of is metered street parking. The building has 2 levels but the 1st floor is where most of the business are. It appeared to me that St. Paul's is the most popular business there. It is a seafood restaurant and fresh fish market. They have a small sit down area for table service dining or you can order your food to go at the counter. After being seated and reviewing the menu I decided to order the same meal I had over 11 years ago. I went with a bowl of clam chowder for $8 to start and then added a fried grouper sandwich ($16) with french fries for another $2.50. The chowder was perfect. Flavorful, delicious and I wanted more (5). The sandwich also was delicious and satisfying made with quality fish, lettuce, tomato, and bread. However while it tasted very good halfway through eating it the bread bun started to disintegrate and then quickly turned to mush before I could finish. Then I needed a fork to finish it. It got messy and I don't like that in a sandwich. It's only for that reason I give an overall 4 score instead of a 5. The french fries were very good tasting too but I had ordered too much food and only had room for a few of them. The table service was very warm and friendly. I believe St. Paul's is a very good choice for a casual seafood meal but please buy more sturdy buns!

With a lot of variety and friendly service, this definitely is a great go-to place. My Mom and I came here for a light dinner and ordered the crab cake and mussels appetizers as our entrees. Thinking that wouldn't be enough food, we added the arugula beet salad. Everything came out pretty quickly, and the mussels portion and salad were enormous. Each dish was excellent. The mussels, a recommendation by our helpful server, were especially good - the mussels were cooked perfectly, without an unopened mussel in the bunch, and the white wine-garlic-fennel broth was seasoned well and had the classic flavor I was hoping for. The only miss was that the bread provided was only barely toasted and a little chewy. The salad was a wonderful surprise: dressed properly with a nice vinaigrette, it had toasted pepitas, creamy goat cheese, fennel, and beets that were not overly earthy. My Mom enjoyed her crab cakes, which had a bit of a spicy kick. I wanted a little dessert and chose their Door County cherry ice cream. I would strongly recommend leaving room for it. It had a fantastic, creamy texture, tasting homemade. The ice cream itself had a natural flavor of almonds with a hint of cherry, was studded with dark chocolate and cherry pieces, and topped with a cute fish-shaped cookie. One of the best ice creams I've had. Like the food portions, it came as three big scoops, so it's good for sharing. The atmosphere is casual and fun, though be prepared for a pretty high noise level when it's full - not from music, but from everyone having a great time with friends and family. I'd recommend getting a reservation, and they're conveniently on OpenTable.
