After shopping for locally grown produce this morning at a number of farm stands we drove over to…read moreHudson, NY for an early lunch at Cocina Chapina (160 Fairview Ave), a relatively new Guatemalan restaurant in the area. After living in southern California for nearly four decades, where there was an abundance of regional Mexican and Central American cuisines, we are always on the lookout for places which offer authentic flavors. Open only a month, Cocina Chapina absolutely filled the bill and will be a restaurant we will visit often. My one sentence review: "Authentic-tasting cuisine from the Guatemalan palate with a number of specialty dishes, served in a relaxed and airy space, by members of the family who own the establishment at quite reasonable prices." Everyone else is invited to continue reading. Por favor! We arrived before lunch and were impressed with the openness and cleanliness of the restaurant. Roxanna, one of the co-owners greeted us and sat us down at a lovely wooden table with comfortable chairs. Before even looking at the menu we both ordered one of our favorite beverages--glasses of cold Jamaica which is a red tea made from dried Hibiscus flowers (with a similar flavor profile to cranberry juice though not quite as tart). Cocina Chapina has a full range of Agua Fresca beverages which one would associate with a taqueria. Freshly made tortilla chips along with a potent Guajillo-based salsa arrived with our drinks. Pleasantly spicy, it was addictive. I thought it might be too spicy for my wife, but she loved it--albeit in smaller doses--and kept finding her way back to the small bowl for a touch of heat throughout the meal. We ordered a plate of four tacos--two al pastor (pork and pineapple) and two carne asada. On the plate were sliced cucumbers, radishes, and grilled scallions. The tacos were topped with chopped onion and cilantro. Two salsas came with the tacos--a very mild salsa verde (made with tomatillos) and a small ramekin of the Guajillo salsa. But the truly special part of the dish was that the taco fillings were served on freshly-made corn tortillas. While we were snacking on the chips, we could hear from the open kitchen the tortillas being patted by the cooked. Incredibly tasty and satisfying. While I might have wished for some more adventurous fillings, e.g., lengua, tripas, buche or goat birria, the meats we did enjoy were really well done. Our next round of food--and the primary reason I chose Cocina Chapina in the first place--arrived while we were just finishing up the tacos--two different pupusas with the usual sides of curtido and a flavorful tomato sauce. Pupusas are typically associated with Salvadorean food and it's a dish we miss dearly. These are corn masa patties stuffed with different ingredients and then grilled. We ordered one with Loroco flower and cheese (a very traditional Central American ingredient) and another with pork and cheese. We had two places near us in southern California which specialized in Salvadorean food and so these were a frequent takeout treat for us, along with Salvadoran tamales (which are quite different in flavor and texture than Mexican tamales). The pupusas at Cocina Chapina were outstanding both in terms of flavor and texture; they were also much thinner than the Salvadoran versions we've enjoyed over many decades. Because of that they were lighter to eat. The curdito, which I made regularly to serve as a side with Mexican meals, is spot-on. This is a slivered cabbage, carrot, and jalapeno pickled slaw. Refreshing and a somewhat tart counter to the richness of the pupusas. The tomato sauce was loaded with flavor, but not at all spicy--for spice we still had an ample quantity of the Guajillo salsa. Much to our surprise, we finished everything, my wife even taking into the car her unfinished Jamaica in a takeaway cup. Roxanna was a delight as we talked about the cuisine and the restaurant she owns with her husband. On our way out I also noticed a case of Panaderia-style baked goods. I turned around and asked Roxanna if they made those too, she smiled proudly and said yes. Next time we'll get some of those as well for breakfast the next day. I would encourage anyone with a taste for authentic Guatemalan cuisine to give Cocina Chapina a try, the owners are lovely, the restaurant is of ample size, the bathroom is pristine and accessible, and there is ample parking since it's located in a large shopping mall. Just a fabulous find for us, one we will be revisiting often as we spend more time in this area.

I ordered the Fontina Panino (vegan sausage, fontina cheese, arugula and fennel mustard on ciabatta) and a cortado to drink. We take out seat in the very cool back room, and only after 5 or so minutes the drink and food arrives. Now I am a complete foodie, really tough on everything I eat, but after one bite I was in love. To the point where I asked Lauren, the owner, what mustard they were using, and then ordered a panini press when I got home hoping to recreate the magic. Perfectly chewy bread, just the right balance of sweet and savory, and that mustard. Truly amazing. My wife ordered the avocado toast which she said was perfection. I wish I could bundle this place up and ship it to New Haven because I'd be eating one of those sandwiches every week. As for everything else: The service was great. The atmosphere laid back and funky. Everything was reasonable priced. LOVE LOVE LOVE Cafe Joust!

How much did you pay the last time you had a one scoop ice cream cone? I bet the odds are pretty…read moregood you may have paid triple what I paid yesterday. Because yesterday, I paid (brace yourself) a buck and a half for a one-scoop cone of pistachio gelato. Yup, I really did. Scoop 518 is the quintessential small town ice cream shop. You'll find it located on the picture perfect Main Street of Chatham, NY. It has a very cool eclectic interior with pink trim, black and white mosaic floor tiles, giant circus posters, and I kid you not... a giraffe neck and head sticking out of the upper cabinets behind the counter. They offered 16 flavors, a lot of the first generation basics (chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, coffee, black raspberry, butter pecan, maple walnut, mint chocolate chip), some of the second generation of flavors (cookie dough, cookies and cream, salted caramel, peanut butter fudge), plus a sherbert, 2 sorbets and a gelato for those looking to save some calories. Actually, I paid 2 bucks for my cone because I added chocolate sprinkles for fifty cents. I'm used to having cones rolled around in a bowl of sprinkles for the maximum density of sprinkle application. But that wasn't the case here. She put the sprinkles into a plastic quarter cup container and carefully sprinkled the sprinkles onto and around the ice cream. It didn't work very well and when was the last time you felt ripped off for paying an extra fifty cents? Anyway, 2 bucks for a cone with a smattering of sprinkles is still a fantastic bargain. By the way, the pistachio gelato was delicious.

I walked in with the intent of getting a smoothie, which I did, but also ended up purchasing the shrimp wrap & a Mac & cheese dog. The seating is in abundance, with the choice of booths, tables & high tables. The decor is hip & chic with their colorful painting & graphics directly on the walls. I would have sat to enjoy the ambiance but I had the furbaby in the car. I went with the Pure Bliss smoothie & it hit the spot. I definitely tasted the fresh ginger & also chunks of the fruit. They don't have a designated dog smoothie, like I've seen at other places, but you do have the option of building your own. In addition to smoothies, they also offer acai, oatmeal & dragonfruit bowls. There's something for everyone! If you get the cheese dogs, get extra napkins. This is isn't your typical topping. This is a whole lot of mac & cheese shells drowning a 9" hotdog. I was in cheese heaven. The wrap was also tasty. I without a doubt loved the corn dusted medium sized shrimp. With all the healthy ingredients, there was not a feeling of guilt in site as a ate every crumb. The side are their house potato chips. Normally, I'm the oddball who does not enjoy this kind but I found my hand dipping in the bag multiple times. They are well salted & peppered, no soggy ones included. There menu is so extensive, it'll take a few trips to get through it all. No complaints here.
