    Pigeon

This place was great, food was excellent, service was solid. I'm visiting London, I wanted a meal that I wouldn't traditionally find in the USA. This place was recommend by a friend and they delivered! Food was different, I'm from USA, this was not your traditional menu, the selections I've never seen before. Server was helpful in helping me decide. I honestly don't think I could have gone wrong with anything that I picked. App was the pigeon breast, it was way better than expected, consistency of a duck but little heavier. Great flavor. Never had pigeon before, this set the bar high I believe. Main: horseshoe venison sausage, the curry sauce had heat, I like heat, not overpowering, for me it was a medium heat. The sausage had good flavor, just a touch on the dryer side but that's venison. Had the venison flavor. It was great. Dessert was the sticky toffee, basically vanilla ice cream with a chocolate cake and caramel sauce. It was awesome!!!! I'd come here again hands down!

My wife and I had to have a proper Sunday roast while we were in London and our nephew who lived here for 15 years said to go to the Jugged Hare, a great Gastro pub in the City of London. We were not disappointed by yet another brilliant recommendation. The atmosphere is hunting lodge fun, the staff were all friendly and despite our 730 reservation, they were still able to serve us our Sunday roast (we whiled away the afternoon at the Tate's Expressionist Exhibit). Candidly, our waitress Lauren made all the difference in our evening with her charming repartee, great advice, menu guidance and general good cheer. She expertly balanced supporting our dining experience while not being intrusive. They are really quite fortunate to have such a pro on their team. My Welsh Leg of Lamb was medium rare and tasty as was the excellent mint jelly and the Yorkshire pudding and gravy (in my mind the whole point of a Sunday roast) was superb. My wife opted for a perfectly prepared pan seared Cod Filet. We were both surprised by the side of really well prepared kale and the roast potatoes were also something to write home about - crispy on the outside and buttery smooth on the inside. My wife raved about the sticky toffee pudding. I can't have dairy and to my delight and surprise they had and absolutely delicious dairy free cheese cake with a chocolate sorbet that was as good as any I have had. We would we go back - in a quick second - especially to try one of their specialty game dishes - though we might check to see if Lauren is working.

Sunday roast - beef with horseradish

Celebrating my first English meal in London at The Jugged Hare felt right. The gastropub is clean with ample wooden decor (also taxidermy everywhere!). Our party sat at one of the barrels and enjoyed the sunlight coming in through the atrium. Great ambiance to spend Sunday afternoon catching up with friends. Beers on tap are cask ale, bitburger, heineken, etc. I've never tried/heard of cask ale before, but my party introduced it as uncarbonated, warm beer. Sounds interesting enough to try it one of these days. My Sunday Roast with beef was really a feast. Although you can get it with chicken or lamb, the beef is aged for 45 days. The horseradish was on the creamier side without enough kick so that I felt the beef to be overwhelmed. However, the steamed vegetables were seasoned well and contrasted well to the cauliflower cheese gratin.

"Bangers and mash": roe deer sausage and mashed potatoes.

The name of this place sounds like a pub, and when you walk in, the front part feels like a pub. Except there's a nice restaurant hidden in the back, and they serve a lot of interesting British fare. The menu points out which foods are in season, and there are plenty of seasonal offerings. They specialize in game, but if you're not that adventurous, they do have some normal items. We started with some queen scallops with chorizo and garlic. Hmmmmm so delicious and creamy. We also had a salad, but in the face of all these yummy game meats, I could barely remember what it was. I had the roe deer and port sausage with mashed potatoes, which was a game version of bangers and mash, essentially. The mash and the roast onion was very, very savory, and you could definitely taste a hint of herb in there. The roe deer sausage was interesting but a bit grainy, so it wasn't as good as I had hoped. On the other hand, you could tell it was a freshly made sausage. I really wish I had tried the jugged hare since I never had that dish. I read about it online and got cold feet... (poor rabbit). If you're a traveller craving for British pub food with a flair, this is a good place to go!

Great selection of Whisky and Whiskey

Who knew there was a restaurant stuck over on the side here. The pictures and menu look great. I want to eat here on my next trip. I was hauled in by customers after a day of meetings. The atmosphere excellent. You could drop the bartenders into any American hipster bar and they would look like they belonged. It's too bad things like that get globalized. Anyway the beer selection excellent, The selection of whisky and whiskey was top notch. I didn't try a cocktail, but they looked like they were prepared with fresh ingredients and with skill.

Sunday roast was out of this world.

This place is a meat-lover's heaven. The game heads hanging on the wall really add to the hunting lodge vibe, and the food is incredible. I went for Sunday roast and was greeted with the most glorious rump roast, with potatoes cooked in duck fat and cheesy cauliflower gratin. The house Ale was spot on too. Make a reservation, though it's off the beaten path, near the Barbican, it is extremely popular and fills up quick at lunch.

The Jugged Hare is a great higher-end gastro-pub near the Barbican Centre. Highly recommended for a quick pint or even better if you stay for dinner. The rotisserie menu is the way to go. I agree wholeheartedly with Zoe K that the 1/2 chicken was juicy and flavourful. My friends all seemed to enjoy their roast of aged meats....the side of sprouting brocoli with almond butter looked amazing. Strangely enough the special of the day was "squirrel pie" which sadly none of us tried. There is a long list of grilled meats and fishes, so plenty of choice or even the fussy of carnivores. The atmosphere definitely draws a wealthier well put together clientele, though the excessive taxidermy on display by the bar is rather bizarre. What's the story behind the stuffed ferret?!?

I can think of nothing better than spending a Sunday afternoon with a group of friends, and a variety of meats! In which case the Jugged Hare was perfect. As you enter the pub the main wall behind the bar is a glass case of taxidermy. To the right mounted antelope and rabbit heads. The main restaurant wall decorated with prints of animals. This bodes well for the meaty game theme. I'd read good things about the Sunday roast, so was keen to give this a go. Between 6 of us we had the 45 day aged rump roasts, bacon croquettes, boar bombs, rabbits liver on toast, scallops, and a rump steak. The liver and scallops were from the specials menu. Each dish was a well prepared, good sized portion. I get really excited when a restaurant serves cauliflower cheese with their Sunday roasts, and the Jugged Hare serves up a delicious side with theirs. Service was really friendly and accommodating. The waitress arranged for a kids portion of fish and chips for the one child we had in the group. It turned out to be a lovely grilled piece of cod, triple cooked chips, and a side of veg. On the way out we were shown the ageing cabinet where meat is hung, which was gross and pretty great all at the same time. All in all a pretty great afternoon of eating. We will definitely be back for more!

Loud happening place on a Thursday night. Great food and vibe but the taxidermy was a little bit of a turn off.

The  menu at Battersea Pie Station includes classics like steak and stout, minced beef and onion and chicken and mushroom, plus more creative, veggie options including butternut squash and goat's cheese. The steak and stout is my ultimate favorite! This place is my go to pie place every time I'm in London. I always try to stay in Covent Garden just so I can come here. This is my basis of the perfect meat pie with the pleasingly firm crusts and sides of mash and roasted potatoes are so delicious. The rich red-wine gravy comes separately in a small jug. I smother the pie with the gravy. Ingredient quality was excellent. They have mini pies and the regular sized pies. Even for a counter-service place this little cafe is terrific value - and you will be surprised that for Covent Garden you can eat a reasonably priced and uber delicious meal that makes me full the whole day! 5 stars can't wait to come back!

Minced Beef & Onion: The most popular, apparently. Smooth and moist inside with a buttery flaky outside. Steak & Stout: Same great crust, but with a very distinctive inside, chunks of firm roast and thick gravy where you could actually taste the stout. Probably my favorite pie here. Chicken & Mushroom: A nice variation from beef, but by no means lesser. With it's large chunks and umami gravy, this was like a quick hit fix for when craving a proper chicken pot pie. Mash & Gravy: The mash was smooth and buttery. The gravy was more than plentiful. Kinda lives under the shadow of the delicious pies though. Sticky Toffee Pudding: Good, but not great. The toffee sauce felt a bit too thick and wasn't as warmed as I like it. The sponge cake was alright, but kinda dry, like they just plopped into the toffee sauce puddle. But it did do a good job of soaking up the sauce with a little spoon dexterity.
