This is such an elegant and charming place to get afternoon tea and it's better than any I've been to in the Pittsburgh area! It is by reservation only, which is done online and you pay online ahead of time as well, which makes for enjoyable experience the day of, not worrying about the check, tip, etc. You get unlimited tea, and there are hot and iced varieties. I started with the mango passion fruit green tea and then finished the experience with the iced raspberry hibiscus -- you can switch it up as much as you want. The savories consisted of a red pepper quiche, spinach artichoke cups, cucumber Boursin sandwiches and almond chicken salad croissants. The standard tea includes one scone per person and I highly recommend ordering extra -- they're phenomenal and are served with strawberry jam and clotted cream. Our desserts were a raspberry lemon pound cake, chocolate and vanilla macarons and a vanilla custard in a pie crust cup with a fresh raspberry on top. Everything was amazing and they rotate menus seasonally. Children are permitted but it's the same menu and price for them, just FYI. What a great experience here at The Johnston House. My mother, two sisters, and Nonna came here for lunch on a Sunday. The building is well kept, the staff are kind, and the food is absolutely delicious. If you plan to dine here, be sure to make a reservation on their website! When you are seated, you get to choose from a list of hot, cold, caffeinated and non-caffeinated tea. Your waitress will bring your table milk, sugar, and your own little tea pot with hot water that is the perfect size for two cups of tea. The set menu includes savory and sweet items. The first course items on the bottom plate are a cucumber sandwich, quiche, pesto artichoke pastry, and a chicken salad croissant with an almond crust. The middle layer is a plain scone which is paired with strawberry jam and a whipped cream. The top plate holds the dessert portion. This included a sweet pastry, chocolate mousse cup, and orange cranberry bread. The bread flavor changes throughout the year. This visit to The Johnston House for High Tea was an afternoon I had been anticipating for awhile. TJH came highly recommended by several people and it did not disappoint. I booked a 90 minute high tea slot for me, my mom and aunt. What a lovely afternoon! Not only is TJH a beautiful property, the staff is very friendly and attentive as well as the tea selection being extensive. The food is sooo good! Who would know you could get full from small finger sandwiches, quiches, and desserts?! We had such a lovely time and ended it with a tour and some purchases-ornaments and small gingerbread houses for some additional Christmas decor. I can't wait to go back! read more

Total disappoint for the price! It was not up to any other High Tea I have attending in and around the Pittsburgh area. Had trouble making reservations then was informed no cancellation, mush pay in advance including the tip. The place was pretty and service was attentive but was surprised to see they only used tea bags, no brewed tea. The sugar was in packets instead of cubes (that all other High Tea shop use). 50% of the food did not seem made in house. The jelly for the scones tasted like it was from a jar, one of the mini puff pastries served with the sandwiches seemed like appetizers from Sam's club. There was also a filled chocolate cup for dessert that it too looked like it was bought premade. I know costs are crazy and getting help is hard too but the quality of the food should come close to the cost of the event. read more

What a wonderful place!! They staff is so kind, accommodating, and wonderful. They do their best to ensure that you have the best time ever. The overall experience is perfect. They have such a wide tea collection to choose from and the explain each one and give their own recommendations. The food is also so tasty. You can't but smile every second you're there because you're having such a great time. The decor of the house is the cherry on top and adds to the high tea vibe. My sister aka our bride was over the moon about having her shower here. However, myself, the bride, mother of the bride, and mother in law all tried to contact the JH to no avail yet we never heard back beyond a pricing list. We all had the pricing list multiple times over. What we needed what confirmation on date availability but 3+ months later we have still not received any further communication from our emails and calls despite our constant follow up. Judging from the other reviews, this seems to be the norm but we are super sad to not be able to have my sisters event here. Bummer considering I know COVID had impacted so many businesses and we wanted to give them our business. read more

My daughters, sister and I look forward to going to the Johnston Tea House every year for their Holiday Tea. It is a highlight of the season. The food is delicious, the presentation is fabulous and the atmosphere is beautiful. My one daughter has celiac and so her portion has to be gluten free. They are very accommodating. Really beautiful space. I came here for a bridal shower and everything was classy and elegant. There are multiple rooms so multiple parties can be held concurrently. There were big windows filling the room with sunlight. The food was surprisingly better than I expected for being small bites...and they came out very warm so it wasn't like they were sitting out for a while. Coffee was good but I was surprised tea was served as tea bags and hot water..at a tea room. I'm no tea expert but it seemed to take away from the experience. read more

I am DISAPPOINTED and FRUSTRATED beyond belief with this place. I received an initial email with the venues and pricing and an invitation if interested for myself and a guest to try the menu. We would have LOVED to do this except we could not get anybody to return our calls or emails. I have now other reviews that are saying the same thing. I certainly understand if you are short staffed, however, don't send out pricing and invitations if you cannot follow through!!! I contacted them nearly two months before an event for tea boxes to go. They told me to call back within two weeks of my event to confirm numbers and the food. When I tried to reach them again they never answered their phone and didn't return my calls. It left me stuck trying to find a new option weeks before my event. This was always a special place for my sister and me growing up, so I couldn't have been happier when she chose to hold my bridal shower here. From start to finish, it was the same magical experience I have always come to expect from the Johnston House: outstanding food, kind and attentive staff, and an exquisite setting. Our guests, many of whom were from out of town, were blown away by the level of service and quality of the food and tea. The complaints about teabags vs. loose tea are baffling to me - why comment on the delivery system and not the quality of the tea itself? All tea is "loose" - the teabag merely serves the same function as a tea strainer in a convenient and disposable form, which is why so many high-quality teas are available in both forms. I've loved all of the teas I've had at the Johnston House, and never felt I was getting anything less than a five-star experience. For the icing on the (tea) cake, there's hardly space here to describe the stunning home goods for sale throughout the house; it's a beautifully curated selection of objets d'art that makes the entire shop feel like you've stepped into another, more gracious and charming dimension. This tea house is fabulous! It's absolutely beautiful inside. I especially love the metallic gold chairs and the attention to detail with the decor. I was introduced to Stash teas here, and the raspberry hibiscus is my favorite. I love that you can try as many teas as you want, from fruity to earthy or spicy. The food is served on a tiered serving tray, and everything is homemade. The scones and clotted cream are my favorites, but the tea sandwiches and assorted desserts, especially the chocolate mousse and the lemon tart are delicious. I have been to the Johnston House many times for tea and for showers--both as the bride and a bridesmaid. The rooms are stunningly beautiful and the food is excellent. I particularly enjoy the quiche. The staff is friendly and professional, and they have gone out of their way to make sure that the events held there are magical. Reservations do go quickly, so you do need to get your date together early for showers, but that aside, I had absolutely no problems booking my events or having the staff contact me back. The comments regarding the tea bags are absolutely laughable. You are given a huge selection of tea to chose from and it is fun to try different ones. I have had a high end tea with the mythical loose leaf tea preparation and it tasted pretty much like Lipton black tea. Give me the bags any day! read more

Yes, this tea house is lovely for a bridal shower. The tea selection and individual teapots of hot water worked well to custom brew your tea. The food was very good and filling. However, the presentation of food caused confusion. The food is served all at once on a 3-tier butler. It wasn't explained that the food progressed from savory to sweet from bottom to top. It also wasn't explained how many people the butler was for. The tables were set for more people than we reserved for and so the food was served for the number of place settings-not the people. Consequently we were charged for more people than attended and were confirmed to attend. The proprietor was unwilling to correct the bill. After 5 minutes of discussion-not wanting to make a scene-I relented. I found being over charged very unscrupulous. My advice, read your bill very carefully. As lovely-and loud-as it was, I will never go back. And BTW, prepare for a headache as no water was served. read more

I am extremely disappointed with the customer service Johnston House. I looked in to having my wedding there but I never received a response to my inquiry. Apparently the Johnston House doesn't need the business as I made several phone calls and emails and nobody ever got back to me. I actually spoke to two employees on the phone that assured me I would hear back from one of the employees in their special events department but I never did. I live right by the Johnston House and I work at a big company in downtown Pittsburgh. I will continue to tell neighbors and friends not to waste their time and money there. read more

My mother and matron of honor held my bridal shower here in May. The venue was absolutely fabulous from service to decor. The price per person was not cheap however I'm a believer in "you get what you pay for." It was well worth it. We had one concern which was a high add on cost per person to bring a personalized cake. When we mentioned our feelings about the high add on cost (extra $3/person on top of the regular rate), the fee was waived. I do not know that they will do this for everyone and maybe there's a minimum spend to get it waived, but we were extremely grateful. As a stresses out bride-to-be, it made my day and helped me understand why this place is so popular. If they treat all their guests with similar compassion, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. I cannot image a more perfect setting for a bridal shower! The room itself is simply beautiful but it is matched with lovely china, decor, and food that is not only delicious, but also beautifully presented. They were able to accommodate special requests to add additional food choices ( cream of asparagus soup and salad with fresh berries and champagne vinaigrette) which our guests raved about! The staff is super responsive and very attentive to both the host and the guests. Nothing was "a problem" even when one guests arrived unexpectedly - the staff readied a place quickly and quietly. They are able to provide such complete service including fresh flowers and lovely favors.if you chose. Attention is paid to every detail here- and it shows! I had my sister's baby shower there. It was a nice venue, but the service as the shower began was terrible. One table never got their drink order and had to go to the kitchen an ask for drinks (this was after food was being served). Also, two people showed up unexpectedly and they made a big deal saying they had to rush and make more food (when all they had to do was put a couple more sandwiches/pastries on a plate). If I was a business I would always have a couple extra ready to go! The lady (dark hair/short) made me feel horrible about this, though the rest of the staff was semi nice. The price is outrageous for the amount of food you get. If you bring a cake, there is a cutting fee ($2.95 pp). All in all this place is way too over priced. The Johnston tea house is absolutely beautiful, however, the customer service piece is horrendous. I booked a bridal shower for my sister and the staff was extremely unprofessional, disorganized, and defensive. They tried to add prices, such as a cupcake fee, (I was bringing cupcakes to the shower) and they insisted we talked about these fees. Apparently they want to charge you a cupcake fee because cupcakes cause wear and tear on their linens and the servers need to be compensated to deliver them, even though you are already paying them 18% gratuity. Interesting...Also, I never discussed these fees with them. Finally, they never put anything in writing to prove their bogus charges, but insisted upon them, which proves their lack of business savvy. I called today hoping to book a baby shower for about 50 people. This is such a gorgeous building. However, it is NOT a real tea experience. They still bring you hot water and tea BAGS! That's so gauche for a tearoom. If it's not loose leaf, steeped tea, it's just lunch with small, overpriced sandwiches. I hoped something had changed since I heard there was new management there. Just have tea at the Westin William Penn downtown. It will be a far more elegant experience for the money. read more

Was there for the 1st time this past Sunday, Once you visit you will understand what I mean, when I say words can not describe it. The high tea was like stepping back in time.
