UNPROFESSIONAL, IRRESPONSIBLE, & EXTREMELY RUDE OWNER & STAFF MEMBER. If I could leave a zero star rating for the horrific, surreal, and bizarre experience I had on September 24th I would. I am left with emotional distress after the bullying I faced from Micky - the owner of Jewel Box. After two negative interactions with Micky Roof (the owner and goldsmith of Jewel Box) and one negative phone call with her staff member, Stephanie Winston Vann - I emailed them to retract doing business with them and to have my grandmother's jewelry and the ring I had given them to repair returned to me - both of which holds an immense amount of memory for me. What occurred on September 24th was Micky creating a smoke and mirrors effect to retract away from the fact that she had melted the ring I specifically and clearly told her to repair only. I had to email Stephanie twice to get my items back. FIRST EMAIL TO JEWEL BOX: Hi Stephanie, Spoke to you on Saturday about some concerns I had about my ring I had given to Mickey for a repair. During the session I had with her earlier on in the week the ring was not present. I know for a fact I left the ring at the store along with the other gold jewelry  to be melted. I inquired to know where it was and have not gotten a response back. During the session I was told by Mickey that I "took a bunch of things back" which is incorrect. I only took 2 gold buttons back but had left the ring for repair as Mickey stated she would try to repair it. At this point I just want the ring returned without any repairs. Please let me know where the ring is - it is 24k ring that was split in half in the middle with a braided detail and solid band on each end. There is a strong memory attached to it - it is the only last good memory of my father. In addition, I would like the diamonds, sapphire, and rubies that were taken off my jewelry to be returned to me along with the melted gold. I'm feeling a bit put off after our phone conversation about how I was spoken to and how things have been handled. I'm a client and I felt I was not treated the way I deserve to be and was met with defensive energy and tone. I just can't bring myself to spend that much money on something that will have a negative memory associated to it. STEPHANIE'S EMAIL TO ME: "In response to your email, we've set up an appointment for you with Micky this Friday (9/24) at 2:00. Micky has given us strict instructions to not release anything to anyone but you. She will only do this in person." I was warned before going to this meeting by several others from the Ithaca community about how Micky's character is, therefore, I brought two friends along for moral support and I also found it strange Micky would only give me the items back by meeting me in person. My girlfriend stayed by the car, while my guy friend came with me as Micky was pacing back and forth in-front of her store - we greeted her pleasantly thinking we'll be let inside to have a civil discussion as to why I was taking my business away from her. We were wrong. She asked us to follow her (I'm thinking she's taking us to her work studio separate from the retail store) - instead she was taking us to the back of her store's building to scream at me. As we started to walk, she stopped, put her hands in-front of my friend's face several times and yelled at him saying he's not coming with us. I had to keep strongly insisting that he is in fact coming into this meeting. We get to the back of her store and all of us sit down at the picnic table (there is mural on the right side of the building and a pita truck on the left). My friend tries to introduce himself - at which Micky doesn't even acknowledge him. Instead she starts going on a rampage full of accusations about my character and who I am as a person - which was shocking, false, and had nothing to do with me getting my grandmother's and father's jewelry returned back to me. I recorded the entire altercation. Happy to share the recording if anyone wants to hear it and I have two witnesses who was with me the whole time of the altercation. The story ends by Micky finally telling me she had melted my dad's ring which I had clearly told her not to at our previous meeting. I asked her why she did that to which she became defensive again and screamed at me calling me a psycho and to never return to her store. I told her gladly. My friends and I are still in shock of what just occurred. I spoke to law enforcement officers who said to me Micky is the one at fault here and anyone will see right through that altercation of who was the victim and who the bully was. DO NOT GIVE THIS PLACE BUSINESS. GO TO SCHOOLEY'S ON THE COMMONS WHERE THEY WILL TREAT YOU WITH RESPECT AND GRACE. read more

I went to the Jewel Box several months ago to have a stone reset into a thinner band because the original thicker band was uncomfortable. I wasn't well versed in the language, and found the customer service to really be lacking in helping me figure out how to make the ring resemble the original design, but on a thinner band. Mickey seemed impatient and frustrated with helping me, and didn't offer any real suggestions for making it work, other than shoving the catalog she has in front of me. Unfortunately, I went with her suggestion for something that was completely different from what I wanted (especially a low-set stone) and now have a ring where the stone is essentially set on a golf tee, that looks nothing like the original ring. I am probably going to have it changed again at some point, but will definitely not be going back to the Jewel Box. read more

I can not recommend the designers and staff at the Jewelbox highly enough. With the help of Mickey Roof (the owner/main designer) my partner and I 'designed' an engagement ring composed of elements of many different rings. Mickey and the staff worked with us to come up with a final ring that had all the design features we wanted, but still was within our budget. We do not live in Ithaca, but the staff was beyond compare with fast, responsive communication. They helped us solve confusion about what we wanted, and were incredibly helpful with any hiccups along the way. The finished product was PERFECT: delivered on time, and my partner is completely happy. They were so helpful and patient through the entire process- which was quite a process given that I was living in California at the time. I grew up in Ithaca and during a visit back home I started working with Mickey on the ring. Their customer service was incredible! They even sent me photos of the ring while it was being created. I grew up in Ithaca and now live in Miami. A couple of years ago, while visiting Ithaca, I stopped in The Jewel Box. I met Sarah and Steve, who were incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. I was wowed by the original designs of the owner, Micky Roof. Modern, substantial, earthy and organic-looking describes a good portion of her designs. There are rings, bracelets, pendants all in a very distinctive style. She creates jewelry in both gold and silver, as well as pieces that utilize both. There are other, less earthy designs as well. All her pieces are beautifully crafted. A few years have now passed and I confess to owning far more pieces of Micky Roof jewelry than I should! The Jewelry Box loves to create jewelry just the way you want it: they gladly help you take an existing Micky design and pick different stones to add your own personal touch. Most recently, they assisted me in refurbishing an antique ring by adding new stones. Their customer sevIce is impeccable. Every piece I have purchased requires it to be custom made and then shipped to me in Miami. Sarah and Steve have always handled the packing/shipping without a hitch. My partner and I had a great experience while shopping for wedding bands at the Jewelbox today. We were immediately greeted by Steve, who remembered my name, though I hadn't been in the store in a couple years. So typical of the staff there. He turned us over to Micky, the owner, who was extremely helpful in answering what we thought were silly questions, and in helping us select just the right bands. We ended up choosing two slightly different versions of Micky's original design "wrinkle rings". We loved the design right away, but Micky helped us choose the slightly different designs and materials that looked best on each of our fingers. Without her expertise, we would have just gotten the same ring. We are so happy with our rings, and really with the whole experience. What more could we want...expert advice without any pressure, and sealing our marriage with an original design ring that you won't see on every finger. read more

Ok to be honest I have not purchased anything here. But I know it is run by Micky Roof and I purchased many things from Micky Roof when they were up in triphammer mall. I was super happy with them up there. We bought wedding bands there and when my wife got her's, it seemed to thick (even though that was the thickness she selected). They saw the look on her face and could tell she was disappointed. So they replaced it free and let her have the one that was two big also in case she changed her mind or wanted to have them some day make it into something else. Wow that is customer service. So a year ago a stone from her engagement ring (which MR made) chipped (garnet). Insurance was going to cover it, but only one stone (there was a matching one). We of course brought it to the Jewelbox and they said they would take care of it all, they do insurance repairs all the time. Two weeks later we picked it up with two new stones and no bill, they took care of it all. read more

Great experience! I was shopping for a replacement Gelin Abaci tension setting. My original was purchased at the Jewelbox 13 years ago, but had become uncomfortable over time. I tried on a few different styles (it is worth noting that very few jewelers have true tension settings in-store). I live out of town, and they took care of everything for me - sending Gelin Abaci my original ring, inspecting it when it was reset, and sending it back to me. They also took payment over the phone which was so convenient. And if that wasn't enough, I received electronic photos prior to them mailing me the ring, which added to the excitement and anticipation. 5 stars for sure. read more
