Five minutes later we try poking our head in to see if there's room for us to stand inside and wait, and quickly get told to go wait outside with a much harsher tone. I'll start with the positives about my experience. The atmosphere was beautiful. A beautiful dark wood feel with real lit candles setting the mood. The staff was friendly and attentive; I was served as quickly as I walked in. But, I was outrageously overcharged for double of scotch neat. The drink had been poured and thoroughly enjoyed before being hit with $55 pours for a $164 bottle. Unfortunately there was nothing I could do but eat it. Maybe for a 25 year, maybe for a 30 year, but for a 21 year bottle of Balvenie Portwood. $20-$25 pours would have been appropriate. I just don't understand industry markup very well and am more than likely just some ignorant bastard. If you're looking to grab a drink here be wise and Inquire about the drink before it's poured, or you may end up complaining about something totally reasonable. Best cocktails in RVA. Not up for debate. Every person that works here knows their sh!t and will deliver 100% quality every single time. The service, knowledge and overall vibe is consistently amazing. Don't get frustrated if they're crowded, take it as a great sign that you're in the right place for a legit, QUALITY cocktail. Prices truly are fair and pours aren't wimpy. They're doing some innovative and unique things over here, don't sleep on it. If you prefer the classics, they can do that too. I love this bar. There is no sign outside, just a little sign that says "bar". It hides on Cary Street but it's the best place. They serve delicious light fair but on Sunday nights they do pop ups and serve amazing food! What can I say but praise for their cocktails? Well thought out, delicious, and unique is just some of what they are. Their seating is limited so get there early. I wish they had a hostess again, at least on Sunday, as seating is a bit hard. It's 40 degrees and I am standing in 40 degree weather in line next a cigarette disposal can waiting to get inside a Christmas themed cocktail bar. Years ago I made a vow to myself that I would never wait to get into a place. I decided that if they did not want me in there immediately, I did not want to be in there yet here I stood, waiting to get in. After about 15 minute wait my party was taken inside and seated at a table. Walking in I was in awe of the decorations hanging on the walls, the tv showing a roaring fireplace ablaze, and the various Christmas references everywhere. I spotted a fragile leg lamp, a "Merry Christmas ya Filthy Animal" written on the wall, Bruce Willis in a vent, and many many more cool decorations. The drink menu had lots of good options but they certainly did not come cheap. When we ordered and the drinks were eventually brought out, they were good, strong but still seemed a little overpriced. Overall it was a good experience to help get me into the holiday mood but I am not sure I need to go again. Once might have been enough for me. read more

Cool bar that wasn't here before I moved from the area! I came down for Father's Day weekend and we stopped here for quick drinks before dinner. Marcelo was awesome and helped us get the ball rolling for the start of our long weekend. We had terrible traffic coming down so we both were ready for some alcohol. I had two cocktails, and my favorite was the deveraux. I'm into more refreshing drinks currently because of the season and this was definitely good for that. The S.O. got a boilermaker to start off with because he has chaotic energy and then finished off with the mind-flayer. All cocktails we tried were good and reasonably priced for the area. We were in and out within the hour and had a REALLY good start to our weekend. Good enough that I bought some wooden wizards from two dudes selling them outside on the streets. read more

We walked past this place and I was intrigued by the sign subtly proclaiming "bar". Its exterior is very subdued and I wasn't sure if it was even open. After a little research we later discovered The Jasper's name and concept. It is as stated; great cocktails at decent prices. We had the burbon and ginger special and a Manhattan. Yum! Good selection and high end ingredients. Nice big bar in front, but it was full even on a Sunday night. The hostess pointed us to the back where they have so really cool and comfortable booths. My second experience was just as bad as my first one was good. I think what could go wrong, did go wrong. I had wanted to purchase one of the Santa mugs for a Christmas gift, only to find out they were selling used mugs as new! I received my mug in a bag and in the box but noticed the tape on the box had been opened. I then opened the mug and it was dirty on the inside. There were remnants of someone else's drink!! This was disgusting. I asked the waitress about it and she nonchalantly said yeah they were "recycling" the mugs until they got more in. Why wasn't I told beforehand that it wasn't a new mug? Also, if this is any indication of how clean their dishes are, I'm surprised we don't all have diseases from going there and drinking out of their dirty cups. I was frankly so repulsed by the fact that they tried to sell me a dirty cup as new that I will never be back. I'm just thankful I didn't get the drink that came in the Santa mug because it would have had dirty remnants of the previous drinker's drink in it! What disappoints me is that the waitress didn't tell us it was a used mug until after I brought it to her attention. I had wanted to give this as a gift. It would have been awfully embarrassing to have given someone a dirty "new" mug on Christmas morning. Aside from all this, we had to wait outside in the cold for about 25 minutes to get in. I understand that since it's a crowded space. When we finally go seated, we had to sit in a back corner facing a wall. The hostess also seemed to favor the large party behind us. Phenomenal. I arrived at 9:00 p.m. and walked through a curtain, past the sign in the entrance that says to kindly choose anywhere to sit. I chose to sit at a table for two with one side being a booth. The server greeted me and when I told her I'd have a few more joining she graciously started pushing the tables around me together. Next, she brought a glass jar of water and tiny glasses for the table. Since it was a birthday, I asked if they had any matches to light the candles. She said they did not, but told me I would be welcome to borrow her lighter! I found this very accommodating. She also mentioned that they do not have forks here because all of their food is supposed to be eaten with your hands. After my friends arrived and I looked over the menu I chose to order a house bubbly for 7 dollars. It arrived in the same glass the water came in. Everyone else ordered cocktails, which were all delicious and probably averaged around 12 dollars. Later we ordered a bottle of brut. If you are interested in full bottles it is on a separate menu that you must ask for. As far as the food goes, everyone was amazed. The table tried and loved the pretzel bread, the French onion dip!!!, the bodega board, the bahn mi, and the liver mousse. Aside from the food, this bar has a cozy, classic ambience. The actual bar is beautiful to look at, the lighting is dim, and there have an area in the back with couches. The service isn't that fast, so don't go expecting a rushed experience. It's slower, but not in an annoying way. When you come here it's easy to lose track of time because once you start sipping your cocktail you start really enjoying the experience. If you want a real craft cocktail, I am talking about a REAL cocktail, then The Jasper is most definitely your place. Carytown is known for unique one of kinds stores and restaurants and The Jasper fits the Carytown mold to a tee. On the outside there is only a small sign that simply says BAR. Blink and you will miss it. The aesthetic and the cocktails will feel very speakeasy and you will think it's 1920. You will know you are not back in time because I am pretty sure during Prohibition bartenders didn't wear Hawaiian shirts and Notorious Big or WuTang Clan did not exist and neither did hip hop music, which was being played at a modest volume amongst the hipster, college crowd. I loved every minute of it. From the great music, to the old school ceiling fans. It is the perfect blend of the past and the present. The bartenders are superb and must have come from a cocktail paradise planet. Do not go here and get a beer. You must order one of the amazing signature drinks that these craftsmen created. They are absolutely amazing. Not only are they appealing to eye but the taste is just as exquisite! They drinks range from $10-$15 but they are strong and quite large. I had the Caribbean Kween and 2 of the Mexican Firing Squads. Both filled my fancy and the drinks were mixed perfectly. Date night in Carytown lead us to Jasper. Even though I knew to be on the lookout for a discreet "bar" sign we still almost missed it. As soon as we walked in I was in awe of how beautiful this place was. I felt like I had transported back to a 1920s Speakeasy. I was literally waiting for someone to ask me for a password before being seated. There is no password and no hostess you seat yourself. The vibe is sexy, sophisticated and intimate. The lighting is minimal. There are lit candles at every table. The tables are intimate and cozy. There were couples and groups of friends piled into little nooks throughout the bar. The cocktail menu is extraordinary. This isn't a place you come to order Tequilla sunrises this is prime time scotch and whiskey territory. The cocktails are crafted by mixologist who know their stuff. I drank something that had lavender in it and it was AMAZING!! There aren't pool tables or darts or even a dancefloor here but rather people wrapped up in conversation and the vibe of the music. I can officially say with confidence that Jasper is my new favorite bar. read more

New cocktail centric bar in Carytown. I was thinking it would be a little more upscale since they're all about creating unique cocktails but it's really just a cool hipster bar. No pretentious attitudes here! We decided to check this place out on a Friday night and it was suuuuper crowded so we did have to wait to find a seat. So keep that in mind if you visit during peak booze hours. Once we finally got a seat at the bar, the bartenders were very friendly and service was surprisingly fast considering how busy they were. We tried a couple of their house and classic cocktails, and everything was delicious. By far, my favorites were the Expat Willy and the Caribbean Kween. Be careful if you try the Hailstorm Julep, it's so strong, it'll put hair on your chest! My only complaint is that I wish they had a couple of better veg options on their food menu. read more

I used to love this place but it has hit rock bottom. Cocktails taste horrible or are literally all the same thing. I call it dishwater. An the best way for a newer or veteran consumer to see this from the bartenders perspective is. Look at the tables. If every table, every seat, has a cocktail that looks exactly the same and it is over half full. It doesn't take rocket science to figure out somethings wrong. Then as you watch the bartenders you can already see the problems source. Counts vary from cocktail to cocktail. From what I've seen it could be a 3 counts to a half count pour for an ounce ratio. So your either getting a drip or a flood. Thats why your same drink tastes totally different. Somehow an I cant confirm this every drink tastes like water. I presume it is the ice they use to shake an yes there is a correct ice. Preferably you want ice that wont melt, else it will water down a good cocktail. However you can make bad ice work you must change your technique. Shaking it for long periods of time only ensures ice melts and ruining your drink. Again I love the bartenders but there definitely needs to be a quick class to refresh the skill set. I would ask that the bar staff continue to read the room. An test a cocktail to see why so many half glasses are on the floor. An or who is making said cocktail an if they are using proper technique. Its an opportunity to learn, not an insult. Lastly back to the lack of variety, if your team is making 7 different cocktails but every cocktail is leaving the bar looking the same begin to question if your garnishes if pretty do they impact the finish of the drink. Nothing wrong with garnishing a drink but if every drinks garnished the same all the drink begin to taste the same as well. Unless the dressings are not impactful like a decorative piece. But not everything needs a zested lemon and twist. Makes no sense on an old fashion. I will say on the upside, kitchen always does a good job with orders. read more

This place is exactly what it says, "full pours and honest prices" The exterior design of this place is easy to miss. Full black with just a small "BAR" label. When you walk in, there's so much character and your experience is immediately elevated. Dimmed lights, classic sign of a speakeasy. When you come here, you come here to have well crafted drinks, not food. So make sure you hit up dinner elsewhere before you come here. That being said, they do provide food that you can munch on, but be aware this is not going to be their forte. For crafted artisan beverages, the price is more than fair. What is normally averaged about 14-15 bucks you can get for average of 10. That is a steal! They also got certain drinks for only 8 bucks! They have housed cocktails as well as classic ones. They also have a small selection of beer and wine if that's more of your fancy. I always recommend sitting at the bar, because that's where you can see all the magic happen. It is so mesmerizing to see your (and other) drinks being crafted right in front of your eyes, and love they put in little touches, such as stamping the blocked ice of your old fashioned with a 'J.' It also seems that their drink menu does change here and there, so that's always appreciated! If you want to get something that was on a previous menu, feel free to ask the bartender! No joke, the second I moved to this town I have been hearing about the Jasper. So much buzz. I don't know if they have a great social media/PR team or what but settle down people. It's an okay cocktail bar but I have certainly been to better in this town. Truly my least favorite thing about this place is the location. It is smack-dab in the middle of Carytown. Like you can look out the window and see storefronts, shopping center, and where they set up for the farmers market Sunday morning. It's literally only the Jasper, a deli next door, and that brasserie across the street that closes at 11. That's not the vibe for an intimate, romantic cocktail bar. If you walk in and the scene sucks, that's kind of your only stop for the night. As it were, it was dead as a doorknob on a SATURDAY NIGHT at 11pm, people. What I really wanted was an espresso martini. Yet, for being such a craft cocktail bar, they had no espresso machine, no french press, not even a coffee pot. I mean, what if I was a monster and wanted a white russian? Or an irish coffee? I'm just saying, an espresso martini is kind of a quintessential after-dinner drink so this was a major strike in my book. Guys, get a french press. It's $20 bucks. Invest. I think the cocktails were fun and rather creative but didn't exactly pack a punch for $15 a pop, you know what I'm saying? And the layout of the place is like an old arcade, doesn't lend itself to an intimate, grown & sexy cocktail vibe. We left to go find another place but sure enough, everything in Carytown closes by 11pm and you're walking around a ghost town. I am into vibes and atmosphere and frankly just feel the Jasper lacks that.
