The Island Inn is the first spot you come across after you step foot on magical Monhegan island. It's very welcoming and has all the charms of island life you'd expect. The view from their deck is SPECTACULAR. Hard to beat, unless you have a private home on the island. The staff was very friendly and the Inn is like stepping back in time. It's very old school and rustic with some of the modern day charms (cuisine, internet, running water, being just some of them). My mum and I got a smaller room with two twin beds that faced the village. Next time I go with my husband I will splurge for an ocean view room. It was quite hot and we didn't have a fan so it was tough to sleep at times. Just having the window open wasn't enough, but also my mum snores, hah. The beds were very comfy and the room was quite clean. The bathrooms were also more luxurious than I had hoped for, so that was a plus. The dinner at The Island Inn was very old school, classic. Their menu items could use some updates for dinner but it was good overall. However, their breakfast that comes with your room each morning was UNBEATABLE. Lobster scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, sausage, english muffins, fantastic music and that gorgeous dining room overlooking the harbor. My recommendation is, stay at the Island Inn and make sure to have dinner at least one night at the Monhegan House. You will not be disappointed! The trails and history on Monhegan is legendary. The sunset is breathtaking and it's truly a magical place. There aren't many other places in this world like Monhegan. It holds a special place in my heart.

Perfect for the setting. It's very picturesque, inside and out. The lobby and small reading room are charming, and the dining room is just delightful. (I loved the butter yellow color on the walls.) My boyfriend and I stayed in a queen ocean view room with a shared bath. The room was small, but tasteful and just right for a couple nights. And of course the view from our second story window was wonderful. No problem at all with the shared bath. They had my favorite tea (Harney & Sons) available in the morning -- great to keep you warm on a morning walk. Dinner and breakfast were very good. Overall, the Island Inn was the best place we stayed on our entire weeklong trip up the coast of Maine and Monhegan was a definite highlight.

This review is for the food. We had two meals during our stay - breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was very nice and a good value considering that a very nice lobster scramble and blueberry stuffed french toast with unlimited helpings was on offer. They had a full complement of the usual warm breakfast offerings as well as a nice selection of continental items that included some decent baked goods and good quality fresh fruit. Dinner was expensive but not a bad value. The quality of their ingredients really stands out. My wife had the filet mignon, I had the haddock, my younger daughter had salmon, and my older daughter had roasted vegetables with quinoa. All used absolutely top flight ingredients and my haddock portion was immense. The visual and creative appeal of these dishes was limited, however, and this restaurant would not warrant a return visit (for dinner) if it were located in Boston, Cambridge, or Portland. That said, you cannot beat the view at the Island Inn, and they definitely have a wonderful breakfast offering. For dinner, the Monhegan House beats the Island Inn hands down, if you are more concerned about the food than the view.

The restaurant at the Monhegan island Inn sits high above the harbor and even higher than it's mainland competitors. Considering that every washed linen and bottled condiment has to cross the chill Atlantic to be ready for a dinner here, the Inn's Menu rivals any destination resto, and at reasonable prices too. Our table enjoyed a colorful and flavorful parade of delights, including baby spinach salad with candied nuts, feta, and cranberries. Sweet, tiny yet meaty Maine mussels in aromatic butter broth. Roasted beets beside bright kale. Salmon filet with a brush of horseradich glaze, accompanied by rosemary red potatoes and sauteed kale mixed with butternut squash. Dessert was a granola topped, deep bowl of rhubarb and berries. Other tables applauded tall filet mignon topped with two large, un-shelled lobster claws. A quinoa dish rounded up all the veggies in the kitchen and came with either curried scallops or grilled chicken. The Inn has it's Region's best fare. And timed nicely, you can finish your meal in time to enjoy the setting sun over Manana island from a rocking chair on the Inn's expansive porch.

Came here for lunch after getting off the ferry. Breathtaking views and courteous service. I tried the clam chowder which was fantastic, and the fish cakes for an entree. Fish cakes were good but could have used a bit more sauce. The side quinoa salad was bland at best, but was only a small component of the entree, so no biggie. Overall the views and the chowder made it worth the choice for lunch.

it is an amazing view from the front lawn

Service and dinner were great. I had the crispy duck and really enjoyed it. My wife had the salmon special.

250 Main Hotel - Linger by the huge fireplace (perfect during a snowstorm!)

We booked a room at this hotel and went to check in and asked for room change after seeing the…read moreroom. The person at the front desk named Jeremy was extremely rude and we ended up leaving the hotel without staying. Daniel (the other person at the front desk) was nice and much more pleasant to deal with. We do not recommend this hotel as we find the attitude in general being too rude (it is not only the north east attitude, we lived in the northeast for decades. This was way worse). Again though, thanks Daniel for being nice and helping us with our refund. For Jeremy: learn a thing or two about customer relations.

I love a cool boutique hotel--when I can afford them! Taking advantage of off-season prices, I…read morechose 250 Main when I headed up to Rockland for a long weekend toward the end of March. It ended up being one where we had a pretty big storm, and that actually made this hotel an even better place to stay. Basics: great location right downtown (if you look at the map and it looks like it's a bit out of the downtown range, it's not; this is a small town and you can walk from 250 Main to the heart of it within 5 minutes). The hotel itself doesn't have parking, but there's street parking or you can park free in the harbor lot across the street (you may want to check this if you're coming during high season). The welcome vibe is immediately evident not only from the super nice and helpful staff, but because check-in time is also when 250 Main starts its happy hour wine social downstairs, which is perfect! And if you reserve directly with the hotel, you get a complimentary glass of vino. I literally met friendly people from the minute I checked in, and we hung out with a glass of wine for awhile before heading out. You can purchase from a small menu of wine and beer until around midnight, which turned out to be a great thing when the storm rolled in the next night of my stay. With the warm and relaxed vibe, hanging out in the lobby area is part of the experience. My room was a queen room with a small balcony overlooking the harbor--which on their website is described as "small," but it definitely is not! Fantastically comfortable bed (which honestly seemed larger than my own queen at home); big bathroom with an awesome rain shower, heated towel racks, and robes; plenty of space to move around in the room itself, which also had a desk and a little sitting area. Oh, and super high ceilings and HUGE windows. While I neglected to get a pic *inside* the actual room [insert facepalm here], check out the cool views of the snowstorm from the windows and balcony. If you don't want to venture out for breakfast in the morning, there are light options available (croissants, yogurt, fruit, etc.)--with delicious coffee from local Rock City Coffee. Huge points too for keeping a coffee and tea station open in the lobby all day and night. With the term "boutique" being tossed around these days willy-nilly, I'm always thrilled to find a place that lives up to it. 250 Main is definitely worth the splurge!
