The 1774 Inn - Drawing Room with original wall panelling and floors

I rarely give five stars, but our stay was as close to perfect as you can get. The Inn was recently…read morerenovated and the owners, John and Jackie, have done a fantastic job. Rooms are beautiful, beds are very comfortable, and there's a ton of indoor and outdoor common space. John and his staff were so nice (Jackie was out of town, but sounds like she's great too) and we and our friends instantly felt at home. It's well worth the price, which is very much on par with other places in the area that aren't nearly as beautiful, comprehensive, or welcoming. I added a photo from first thing in the morning. I got up, grabbed some coffee and homemade granola with yogurt and fresh fruit and went and sat on the deck overlooking the river. Such a great way to start the day. A little hint - when you call to book, don't be put off by how laid-back they are about the reservations. I don't think they asked for any money up-front to confirm or anything. Being 'city-folk', we found this a little scary, but they are on the ball. Don't worry! There's a lot to do in the area, too, if you like the outdoors - go down to Popham Beach and take a walk, visit Fort Popham, grab lunch or dinner at Spinney's, hike one of the many trails, bring a bike and tackle the windy, hilly Parker Hill Road, or pop into Bath if you want a little more (but not too much) action. We'll go back for sure. Would love to visit in another season.

They bend over backwards to try and make your stay memorable. The inn is a wonderful old Phippsburg home and has many different rooms you can stay in. The beds and linens were divine, the bathrooms more humble of the rooms I crept into to have a discrete look. Our room the Woodshed was an.....old woodshed! It overlooked the water, and the early morning brought....SILENCE! Wonderful....no noise, little light...thus we snoozed for ages.....and did other things in complete privacy.....but none of that is your business!!!!! The breakfast time is flexible, the food served satisfying and fresh. We had fresh scrambled eggs with ham mixed in, started with greek yoghurt and fresh berries...but you could choose from many items. Now onto the tea.....being a fellow innkeeper (who's standards are demanding!!!!) and BRITISH....I am VERY demanding on my morning cuppa....and they delivered! The home is impressive and Phippsburg and Bath in general are not like Camden....over developed and touristy. You can cycle from their inn to Popham beach and fort...where there is a great restaurant, not fussy, serving fresh lobster (out of the tank in front of you!) and a plethora of other dishes. John & Jackie the innkeepers try to please in a quiet and relaxed way, are not over burdening, and take pride in their home....but do welcome one to use many parts of it. The setting overlooks the water and is next to a church....I could go on....but won't....just get yourselves booked in when you are 'doing' the Maine coast.

Hubs and I were in Maine for about a week, enjoying the glorious land that is Maine. Our last two…read morenights were supposed to be at the Edgewater Farm Bed and Breakfast. We made the reservation over the phone. I was very excited, because there were so many excellent reviews from others who had enjoyed themselves. We arrived in the late afternoon, and were shown to our room. The grounds of the farm are quite lovely, lots of flowers and veggies. Entering the home, the owner showed us the area where breakfast is served, then showed us upstairs to our quaint little room Now, I understand that B&Bs all have a personality of their very own. The decor and personality of this home was provided by someone who went to every garage sale and estate sale in a tri-county area, and bought up all of the used bedding, towels, and table linens in the 1990s, and has been using them since then. The bed was very soft, like the sort of mattress that one might find in a cheap motel. The towels in the bathroom were of mismatched colors, and rough, oh, so rough. There were signs in the bedroom, the bathroom, and by the front door that instruct you to take short showers and not waste water. I just could not get over how uncomfortable the entire home felt. The walls in the house were quite thin, as I could hear the guests in the room across the hall speaking in hissed whispers as I walked by. If I can hear whispering through the door, imagine what a regular conversation would sound like. But, we made these arrangements in advance, and, what are you going to do. So, we went back into town for dinner, and decided to go back to the farm and relax. Unfortunately, there is nowhere to relax. The bed is uncomfortable, and there isn't anywhere to hang out on a couch. The only place to go is to the main dining area, which also happens to be the only place in the house where the wifi works. The owner's wife had returned, and greeted us. In the meantime, we tried to figure out how to turn on the heat in our room. It turns out that our room is the only room in the house that did not have its own heat controls. I was freezing. We discussed this with the wife. She suggested that we turn the heat up to 60. Really? I am in a fleece, with a hat on and a puffy coat. No, I would like to turn it up higher. Now, she is irritated with me, and tells me that she likes to sleep in a room that is cool, around 55 degrees. We go back and forth on this for awhile. She agrees to let us turn the heat up, but the insists that we absolutely CANNOT open the window. Why, my husband asks. Because it is wasteful. By this time, I have had it. Between the mattress, the rough exfoliation towels, and general uncomfortable nature of the B&B, I just didn't think I could take it anymore. When I travel, I want to be comfortable. If you have a B&B where strangers book rooms and you agree to provide accommodations, I hope that you understand that these people will pay you money, and they will use the heat, use water, and want to be comfortable. The wife was just rude. And, the expectation that we would stay there, not use the heat or the water was just ridiculous. I understand that resources are precious - we are from Seattle, which is the Mothership for recycling and carbon footprint reduction. But this was just unfriendly and ungracious. So, we decided to leave. Upon our departure, the owner informed me that she would be able to evaluate any Tripadvisor review that I might leave, as if she might be able to edit it or change it. Thankfully, they do not require payment up front. I am sure that there is a market for this type of accommodation, but I am not that person. I would NEVER come back here, nor would I recommend. I wish the owners the best, and hope to never see that unpleasant lady again.

I have been to EdgeWater Farm Bed and Breakfast three times in the past three years and I plan to…read morereturn there again next summer. Popham Beach is nearby and between swimming at this beautiful beach and experiencing welcoming and attractive accomodations at the bed and breakfast, this place on the map has become my favorite vacation spot. I love the lush perennial gardens, apple trees, and sweet grassy paths that surround this home. Inside, there is a lively and interesting collection of art and books so if you forgot to bring reading material there is a good chance you'll find something here. The common space where breakfast is served is large, open, and full of light coming in from sliding glass doors. The bedrooms are all painted with an artful flair and with an eye for color and I found my room very comfortable. Bill and Carol are kind hosts ready with suggestions (if asked for) of places to explore whether it is beach or town. And the breakfasts? Really wonderful and fresh as in fresh from the garden. This is a place to come back to, summer after summer--an experience to be woven in with the best of summer memories.

Our friends truly outdid themselves by booking the entire Harpswell Inn for our 4th of July…read morereunion, and I find myself incredibly lucky, feeling like the gods were smiling down on us! It was the most perfect setting for a fun, kid, and dog-friendly celebration at the breathtaking Harpswell Lookout Point. At one point, as I was simply sitting in a rocking chair, gazing at the magnificent sea view, with birds chirping, kids' laughter echoing, and my dog peacefully by my side, I honestly felt like I was in a real-life "Calm Soundscape" - pure heaven. Harpswell Inn is truly a magical place. The lovely young couple who took over a few years ago have done an exceptional job preserving the traditional 1800s Maine vibe of the house while infusing it with modern, fun, and funky furniture. The staff, though a small and dedicated team, were incredibly friendly and welcoming. I must give a special shout-out to Barbara, a true Harpswellonian, whose blueberry scones are absolutely divine! I even had a delightful small-town moment running into her aunt at the local Hannaford's in Brunswick. The thoughtful owners also provided a delicious continental breakfast, featuring locally roasted coffee, and offered kayaks and paddleboards for the more adventurous members of our group to enjoy. Our friends also inquired with Kelsey, the owner, about hosting a private chef for a special three-course meal. Kelsey went above and beyond, creating a gorgeous tablescape adorned with local flowers. She collaborated with a local private chef who focused on sourcing everything locally. Our culinary journey began with fresh oysters featuring traditional fixings and an amazing yuzu orange sauce, alongside a gorgeous cheeseboard as appetizers. Our three-course meal then commenced with a delightful tuna tartare salad with fried capers, followed by perfectly cooked NY Strip steak with garlicky chimichurri sauce, huge, delicious scallops, and incredible focaccia bread. The meal concluded with a delightful and refreshing key lime pie. The owners were also kind enough to arrange a separate, equally delicious meal for the kids, featuring a fun crunchy salad, mac and cheese, and brownie bites (yes, I tried it all!). If I could convince our group of friends to make this an annual tradition, and we could secure our spot early enough with the kind owners, I would absolutely make Harpswell Inn our go-to destination every 4th of July. Thank you, Kelsey, John, and Archer, for being such lovely and gracious hosts. We can't wait to return!
