An amazing afternoon on Monhegan Island! We are not seafood eaters, so the Fish House wasn't for us. Stumbled upon this incredible little gem! Emma had a "toast" with smoked salmon and capers. Note: this review is for food/drink, not for the lodging. After some initial exploring during a day trip to Monhegan Island, we dropped by the Trailing Yew for a snack. I got a hand pie (was supposed to be the cheeseburger, but ended up with the sweet potato) and a lemonade. The hand pie was amazing, with fresh, flaky crust and wonderful filling...no regrets on the flavor mix-up. I should note the size was more of a turnover/appetizer so not enough to make a meal. The lemonade was fresh and refreshing, though it was more on the tart side so plan to add sugar if you like yours on the sweeter side. For something sweet I tried the brownie and it was really good if not overly moist, something closer to a flourless torte. Like most things on the island the prices weren't cheap, but the quality was there so I'd definitely recommend trying this place out for baked goods or a nice snack. read more

PLEASE NOTE: We didn't stay here, we just ate snacks here. We were walking back from a long, sweaty hike and had some time before the boat came back to pick us up. We weren't feeling beer, so when we saw the sign for the Trailing Yew (which I knew had a bake shop but couldn't find much information about online)... it was like an oasis in the middle of a dessert! Open daily 9a to 2p, they offer LOADS of (vegan) options like avocado toast, hummus and veggie toast, PB&J all served on a slab of their homemade sourdough; they had peanut noodles, orzo salad, hand baked pies (including a vegan broccoli and potato option), and an abundance of smoothie options (The Indulge made with chocolate, housemade peanut butter, banana, and housemade oat milk; The Nourish made with avocado, ginger, spinach, banana, green, apple and housemade oat milk; The Enlighten made with peach, mango, banana, lime juice, and housemade oat milk; The Energize made with strawberries, blueberries, lime zest, orange, lime juice, banana, and housemade oat milk). Which is what we ended up getting, but I heavily regret not getting basically everything else I listed! We got The Mellow (pineapple, ginger, island mint banana, housemade oat milk) and The Align (mango, strawberry, banana, orange, lime juice, and housemade oat milk). We sat on their homey porch overlooking the ocean. It looks like there were Adirondack chairs, picnic tables, and cornhole too, but I'm not sure if those are meant exclusively for the people staying at The Trailing Yew. To be totally honest, we were happy just to drink our thick, flavorful smoothies in the shade listening to good tunes after spending hours in the sweltering sun and heat. Very easily one of the best surprises I've had in years, and I can't wait to come back and order literally one of everything. (For those of you who like *all* the information: when we visited, they also had bottled water, sun tea, iced coffee, fresh lemonade, a muffin of the day, an old fashioned donut, a brownie, a cookie, a cookie bar, pickled beets, fresh baked bread, bagels, lox toast, and a bacon cheeseburger hand pie too.) read more

The staff is incredibly friendly and down to earth, the rooms are rustic. The inn feels mostly quiet most times of the day - although we do feel the need to keep our voices hushed - and just outside is a bake shop with decent prices and amazing food - do not expect decent portions - plus grassy ocean views out the front door. Just came back Tuesday afternoon after our I think 5th or 6th stay at the yew. They continue to impress us with their professionalism, their down low integrity and their skill in dealing with the ever changing landscape of covid hospitality in 2021. I was needier this year than in the past, they accommodated my needs with great grace. I cannot sing their praises enough, and I feel blessed they are still an access to this beautiful, special island. I come back from my time here feeling centered and grounded, yet unsatisfied because I cannot stay for longer. Damn the schedulers. Let me provide some context. I work in LTC and quite frankly my life since feb 2020 has been hellacious at times. Covid, a shoulder injury as a result of understaffing and covid , mental health issues as a result of caring for covids. You name it, the works. The yew has become a brief but important respite and reset for me. The island is a separate thing from this. My time at the yew is almost a respite from the island. First of all, if you are the type that loves the amenities of the Marriott or Hilton, maybe Monhegan Island is not for you. A day visit may suffice. The island and its accommodations ate right out of the late 1800's or early 1900's. But if you like to get away from this hectic world and spend a few days hiking, reading, painting, bird watching, and just enjoying the world as it was in a simpler age, then maybe you should spend a few days. We brought our little dog with us, and the Trailing Yew was the only place that indicated that it welcomed dogs. The only problem is that the dog must always remain with you on a leash. It cannot be left in your room should you like to eat in a a couple of the places that serve sit-down meals. All of your food must be eaten outside on a bench, rock, lobster trap, etc. If it's raining, you take it back to your room to eat. You cannot enter an eating establishment with your dog. The Trailing Yew staff is very accommodating to make your visit as comfortable as possible in spite of the pet restrictions. The included breakfast is very good and substantial. Breads, scones, yogurt, are homemade. Some bathrooms are communal as they are even at the two hotels we visited. We had a private bathroom. There is no room service, and you make your own bed and keep your room orderly. I saw no TV's, but Wi-Fi is available but sometimes a bit spotty. All-in-all, if you are okay with living as was was 100 years ago, you'll enjoy Monhegan. It is also important to know that there are no medical emergency provisions on the island. A sign at the dock makes that clear. read more

Just spent the weekend at Traling Yew and Loved it! In fact, so did the rest of our herd of 11 (who had never been on the island before) were on the island to celebrate the 80th birthday of a grandmother. Rustic splendor/Shabby Chic/Funky cool- whatever you chose as a descriptor, this place is a classic. Sit on the porch overlooking the bay with a good book, or spend a few hours hiking some legit trails through beautiful forests and along cliffs over the ocean. Check out the Lighthouse museum and art galleries too. The topper was Monhegan Brewery at the top of the hill above Trailing Yew. Killer beers, ginger beer and root beer made right there! Awesome staff, good food and a great vibe overall. Can't wait to go back! read more

Rustic and quiet. Lamp light in many of the rooms which is very romantic and soothing. You can hear the ocean from the back house. Hot in the summer, no A/C in my room which was fine. The family style meals are a wonderful way to meet people staying on the island and the food is terrific and it is a good value. I love sitting on the lawn and reading. read more

After exploring a bunch of Maine, doing a mix of camping, hotels and staying with friends, this was easily my favorite place I visited. The Island is so nice, part of me wants to keep this a secret, however, as a traveler and explorer, I can't help but share my experiences to help the next person that comes along. First off, Monhegan Island is amazing. It really is, in many ways, a step back in time. Because there are no vehicles (other than the trucks that deal with supplies), everyone walks everywhere and it sets a great tone for an island. Then there are the artists. They are everywhere. Mostly painters, but photographers, and probably some sculptors, jewelry makers, etc. While my stay on the island was short, it was so tranquil, frankly it was hard to leave. Ok, so about The Trailing Yew, oh what can I say...It's just perfect. It's part boarding house, part family style restaurant and part communal living experience. Because breakfast and dinner are included in the price ($120/night single occupancy, $210 d.o. for 2011). I can't tell you what a great value this is given this is on an island!!! The vibe of the place is very friendly, fairly informal and about as relaxing as you can get. Note, for many people that require an ensuite bath, your out of luck. This is very much like staying with a friend in the spare bedroom with the bath down the hall. Oh yeah, there is only 1 room with electricity. Every other room has gas lamps, so people tend to go to bed on the early side, and get up earlier. I am a complete night owl but went to bed before midnight, and got up (I set my alarm) before dawn and watched it rise over the sea (WOW!!!)... Dinner was decent, I had fish, and while I missed breakfast because I was out hiking, I was given a few donuts/pastries and some coffee because I got back at the tail end of the meal. If you like to hike, walk, cool breezes, the sound and sight of the ocean and want to try something a little less conventional, you will probably love this place. If your an artist, I would even give you stronger encouragement to check this place out for a night or three. I will be back as soon as I can, and be bringing friends, family or my significant other with!!! read more

So far so beautiful and we have a lovely cabin. It's rustic with a view. We have our own shower and the grounds are lovely. Will hike later after a brew at near by Monhegan Brewing. Time for a nap in the comfy bed and then read in their porch by the sun!! Oh we had a shared bath originally but the cabin became open and she put us in it. Nice!! I highly recommend coming to the Yew and to the island of Monhegan. read more
