Returning to Stately Breakwind Manor from a road gig in Ohio, There wasn't a lot to find vis-a-vis breakfast joints on the way. (the Denny's and IHOPs have all been terrorized by accountants, apparently, as their offerings have all declined exponentially in quality.) The nearest Cracker Barrel was literally 100 miles in front of us. Nope, I was in the mood to find the tiny local joint where folks in the kitchen had a mission. This quest has been front and center in all my travel plans since always, and when I win one, it's always a bonus (find my Yelp about "Lu-Bob's" in Greenville, IL) As wife was driving, I had time to reconnoiter Yelp, and the "Invention" in Milan (a few miles ahead) looked like a bullseye. Milan is a quaint little town with a picturesque town square, and the "Invention Restaurant" was smack dab on the corner- it looked EXACTLY as I hoped it would. It was crowded inside with Families (2nd good sign). We got seated in a tiny booth right next to the kitchen and restrooms- Siberia in any other place, but at least we wouldn't escape the eye of the Waitress when our drinks needed a refill. The Lady Chef expediting was a riot to watch and listen to. I could tell these folks were serious about their jobs. The Waitress seemed right out of central Casting-jovial in a good natured smartass way. Wife went with the "Triple"- Eggiwegs, Pancakes and Bacon. I swung with the special "Hot Trash" which was basically a "garbage plate"-a bit of everything mixed up with potatoes and eggs. (this one promised to be "spicy") A really Good Cup of strong coffee was the 3rd good sign, but the "Pepsi" was a bit suspect. Luckily that was the onliest barnacle on this visit. Not enough to foul the mood, but If we're ever there again, we're drinking Iced Tea. Both Breakfasts were max yummy. The "Hot Trash" wasn't especially spicy, but the dish was really great. I didn't care about the spicing. Wife was happy with hers-everything was top fresh. My plate was so sumptuous, I couldn't finish. Made sure the Chef knew it was a matter of capacity, not lack of quality. Prices VERY reasonable as well. This WAS a "small-town winner" for the books. One note-The unisex toilet was about as spacious as the last one I visited on a Boeing 737. Although clean, you could wash your hands in the sink without leaning forward on the throne. I'm a man of size, and if I was 10 pounds more, I would have had considerable trouble navigating the facility here. We were passing through on our way to Cleveland. The restaurant is located in the center of the town square. The town square was incredibly quaint and the town is the birthplace to Thomas Edison. So the restaurant had quotes on the wall from Thomas Edison as well as photographs of him. The Sunday we popped in, it was packed but we quickly found a booth. Our server quickly took our order and promptly brought us hot coffee. We both ordered the meat and cheddar cheese omelette, I had bacon and my husband had sausage. We both thought they had just the right amount of filling and the side of crispy hash browns were also tasty. However, we felt it took quite awhile to get a meal. My wife and I stopped here on a drive from VA to Michigan. Love the location near the town square. The food was VERY good, and the service was great. They even had pie for dessert, and Abbie gets bonus points for giving me a fork (instead of a spoon) for the pie. This will be a regular stopping place on future trips. read more

I visited The Invention with family and hoped to have a repeat performance of the good country cooking and fine service we had last time. I still enjoyed the ambiance of a country dinner, but they changed chefs. The food came out cold and we had to ask the waitress to check on our food. Perhaps they were having a bad day. I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant and the expansive selection of meals. Invention has a diner type vibe with plenty of seating at the counter, as well as booths against the wall and tables in the middle of the restaurant. Our server was very friendly and checked in often to see if we needed anything. Meal prices are reasonable. It's me, the noob at Invention Restaurant or should I say invention breakfast spot You can tell the minute walking in this is the spot in town for breakfast. Every seat was taken and we didn't wait too long. Menu is affordable and I enjoyed the portions. Our waitress had numerous tables so I get our wait for breakfast as well. The restaurant had various seating, booths, tables and counter. They also had one large oak table for six. We were driving to Maine and stopped in Milan first night and had breakfast here as the one at the Super 8 was a terrifying as our room! This place is so worth it. We split an order of biscuits and gravy and they were incredible. i haven't had a gravy that good in years! I would be a reqular because of those biscuits and gravy if I was a localo. The name of this place intrigued me. I knew we had to check it out without even looking at the menu, although I must admit I anticipated wilder offerings. You'll enjoy this place by expecting a small-town diner with very simple fare. It's a sweet little spot with great service. Charger Burger - this is massive and meaty, but the wan slices of button mushrooms on it don't lend much flavor. You can get a massive heap of classic Ruffles, or swap them for rings for $1.50. The onion-rings are oldschool with a hearty crunch. Our mains were solid, if no more than "fine." But an appetizer elevated the whole meal: Fried Mushrooms - these are a good portion of portobellos in a savory seasoned breading, fried to perfection. Those were awesome. There's no way Nikola Tesla could have fried up a better appetizer for $6. read more
