Steve Hunter had been recommended by Control 4 when my original media installer went out of business. My Control 4 system had gotten corrupted since the original install and I needed a new set of eyes to reprogram and bring it up to date. I met with Steve Hunter a few days before I was to leave on holiday for 3 weeks. He seemed progressional and reliable, was on time and full of ideas and information. He said I needed a full reprogram of the Control4 main frame and that my existing controller had corrupted software and was too old to reprogram. He even tried to contact the original installer in the hope that he could get the original programming instructions so he wouldn't have to start from scratch. He also left a new controller module in my equipment rack which he hoped to reprogram upon my return. The plan was to met up soon after I returned from overseas and I even reached out by WhatsApp to stay in touch. Sound good so far, right. Well once I got things started to go south. I returned home on Dec 8,2022 and left a message for him to call. We had a brief conversation on Dec 10 at which time we agreed to meet on Tuesday Dec 20 and complete the programing and system setup. There was no question we were setup for Dec 20 I reached out again on Dec 19 to confirm our appointment for the next day and that's when his true colors came out: I reminded him that he had specifically agreed to complete the work on Dec 20. He had certainly enough time to plan since I left the country on Nov 16 and didn't return until Dec 8. His response to my text: "Rod my recollection when we last talked is we would book a time before Xmas for the next year. I don't have it don't firm for this week. I planned on doing it next year. In case there's issue I like to have access to tech support easily. Right now I have clients needing music and TVs for Xmas" I reminded him of our conversation of Dec 10: Steve We spoke on the phone the Saturday after I returned from Indonesia. We specifically set up the service call for tomorrow Tuesday Dec 20 at 9am.I have notes on my phone regarding our conversation. You told me at that time that it had to be that week because you were out of town over the holidays. So are you now telling me that you are not going to complete the work until the first of the year?? This doesn't make me happy It turned out that he is clearly a flake, he was telling me that we never had the confirmed appointment and he had even forgotten that he had left an expensive Control 4 main module at my house Our conversations went south from there. I'm sure he'll have his version of the situation but the bottom line is this guy just didn't care enough and a small job and basically blew me off. Stars? If you look at the Black Hole picture recently taken, I'm​ sure you can see Steve's face in it. This guy kills any stars. So here is my story. Six years ago we bought a new house and the previous owner had installed a Control 4 system, which was great. Unfortunately​ for us, Steve was the one who did the installation​ so we also inherited him. Control4 is great, except for every little thing you want to tweak or modify, you have to go through the dealer. Now, I'm not a tech genius but I'm fairly​ decent at connecting stuff, software updates, etc but this was over my pay grade so I had to rely on Steve. Since Day 1, he had this really abrasive personality, almost treating you like an idiot. To be fair, Richard, the guy who actually installed the new controller, was much nicer. Anyhow, after the whole thing was set up and working, there were minor things that needed to be fixed along the way. Every time I contacted​ Steve via email, not only he would often reply late, but he also had this terrible customer service​​ like you are bothering him. Again, and to be fair, a couple of times, he fixed my problems remotely without charging but those literally​ took him probably 15 minutes max. It's a dreadful feeling to have to contact somebody​ who has a terrible and curt attitude to fix something that you could fix yourself if the system allowed it to. At the end of last year, I​ needed to replace a dimmer. He quoted me $140 (!) saying it was a legacy dimmer. I ended up buying it on Ebay for $35 and it works​ great. I​ started emailing Steve in January/February and he never even bothered to reply. I finally talked to him last week and he started yelling at me on the phone (!), saying "if I never replied is for a reason! Do you think I work for free?" and then a whole incoherent tirade about returning food to a restaurant or whatever he was saying. I told him "let's have a civilized​ conversation" and he kept on yelling and finally hang up on me. So I contacted another dealer in Vancouver, who was awesome, did the work and charged me less than $25, versus the $150 Steve typically charges per hour. So yes, I would​ recommend Steve but only if you typically like to be on the receiving end of BDSM​ sessions. read more

They installed everything in a couple hours and it was quick and easy, i didn't have to do a thing. Couldn't ask for a more complete and helpful company. Steve and Richard have been amazing to work with. They have done all AV on 5 acre property. It's an older property with many hurdles applying new technology but they have never given up until finished. They also have taken calls for little fixes or sent Richard when larger fixes need to be done. Steve has even been very helpful on discussing other systems he doesn't even deal with, or given contacts for Crestron system or camera AV. Not only did they update the junk parts my original dealer sold me, they also stayed late into Friday night to make sure we had internet. We live here for a year with control4 and no Wi-Fi. Wouldn't give me any information about the company or a card, or let me talk to anyone. Had a few initial interactions with Steve Hunter, owner of The Hunter Group. Nice enough guy but when he showed up to our home for a consultation he made us uncomfortable. Not only did he push hard to "up sell" us on electrical switches that we told him (multiple times) we didn't need and have condescending tone about the issues we were experiencing with the Control4 system, but he was also oddly sexist. Claiming that all women do is listen to is Sarah McLaughlin and "dance music" and that he hated seeing it with his blues playlists (oh so sophisticated!). Suggesting that all women on the westside of Los Angeles have multimillion dollar kitchens that they don't cook in. It was just a number of weird strong opinions that I would never bring up to a potential client. His tone was what made it worse, he talked down to us about all the aspects we found confusing the with system as if it was our fault for not understanding. Very unprofessional already, but we thought, since he had such great reviews, that we would give his work a shot and let that speak for him. However, when we told him we wanted a full quote for all the work we wanted down at the home, which already has a full control4 system with multiple things we wanted repaired, he emailed us back that he was "no longer interested in servicing the system." No explanation at all. The man just had a tantrum because we wanted to have all the information before making a decision. Sorry that we didn't want to pay an hour billed at $125/hour for you to delete 2 things out of the system and add a button to the home screen right off the bat. read more

Steve Hunter was recommended by one of the people who gave one of the five star reviews. We were all set, agreed on an installation date, he told me to send a check, I did. After sending the check he told me he was really busy and couldn't get to me for several weeks. He then sent me a very curt email that was completely inappropriate and unprofessional. I asked him to return my check because the email made me uncomfortable and the fact that he told me to send a check and then put me off, I just didn't trust him - despite my friends glowing recommendation. I hired another company that was a professional company and was actually less expensive than Steve. Keep looking - there are so many companies out there that install these systems! read more

Steve Hunter is a Control4 dealer. I had him out to bid on a job at my house. He spent an hour with me reviewing options. Got back to me a week later to discuss the bid, but didn't give me any prices--said he wanted to stop by one more time the next day to check out the job site. Two days later he hadn't been back out and I gently asked for a bid so I could compare him against another bid. He tells me he'll come by in 30 minutes. Then a few minutes later he emails to say the job is too small and he's not interested. So that's fine, maybe my $8k job is too small for this guy, but why not tell me that when he came to my house more than a week earlier? Why instead waste my time? Or maybe he hears I'm looking at another bid so loses interest because his prices are uncompetitive. Just another flaky contractor...join the club Steve. read more

Terrible experience with this installer. I asked Steve to come out and evaluate a reactivation of the Control 4 system in my new house. At the same time I told him that I would be purchasing a sound bar/sub-woofer system and other items for the house through him and pay for their installation. Steve did not come out but sent one of his installers. They spend a few hours on the Control 4 unit claiming difficulty on reactivating it. Ultimately the system was reactivated and I discussed the other items that I intended to purchase. Steve claimed that the "license" my account was expired and I would have to pay $499 to re-engage it - this turned out to be false. I then received a bill for $1,765 which included $47 of cables, a $99 annual remote access fee, the $499 license that I didn't need and a labor bill of $1,120! Steve charged me 4 hours from his office at a rate of $110 an hour. Steve refused to negotiate any of his charges - I was even willing to pay the $499 as I thought he was telling the truth. I eventually brought in another installer that reactivated the account in ~2hrs by himself at a fraction of Steve's bill and told me that the $499 license was an inaccurate charge. This installer made his money by selling/installing technology as I had supposed would be the arrangement for The Hunter Group. Bottom line, their rating should be zero. read more
