I have been coming here regularly for the past 4 years. I had a meal plan and came here between 10 and 20 times per week for all three meals. While I admit, the food is not the greatest food you will ever have; I will say that most of the food is good, and there is enough variety to not make coming here a terrible chore. The Hot Spot, like any cafeteria/buffet possesses a few constants. In the morning, they usually serve the same assortment of stuff with slight varieties to the choices such as the occasional inclusion of bacon as a meat choice. During lunch and dinner, they always serve burgers and fries, pizza, Mongolian style Chinese food, among others. That being said, there is still enough variety to make people happy. First, they have a sandwich bar where students can have someone make their own custom sandwich, there is a vegetarian vendor that serves different items everyday, They even have theme weeks, where they cook up international dishes. Lastly, every afternoon they have a snack bar open where they serve different snacks including ice cream, puddings, and others. Overall, I think this place is pretty decent and I would temper your expectations for fine dining because this is not a 5 star place. However if you come here expecting an abundance of decent quality food at a good price, I think you might be pleased. read more

I've been eating here for nearly a whole semester now and my experience with the hot spot just gets worse the more you know and rely on it. This morning was very disappointing, I waited from 10:00 to 11:30 and none of the other places opened up during this time, to which I left hungry. I will say that the other (rather unhealthy) choices were open but it's almost always the same greasy American breakfast, pizza, and pastries. Most choices are hit or miss here but more miss as the week progresses. Next semester I'm just going to change my meal plan from 14 to 10 meals since anything outside the hotspot has reliable service and better food. UPDATE (1/20/19) 2nd semester : I am completely fed up with the hot spot and nau food in general. First day back before the semester they fed us OLD FOOD. As a result, I had a very unpleasant trip to the bathroom. Since then I've completely avoided the pizza/ cheese foods as well as going there in general. This food is not worth the $600 I pay a month for their god forsaken meal plan I'm enslaved to pay for! We tried to see if we could cancel the meal plan all together but it turns out freshmen living on campus are enslaved to a meal plan. Some people just straight up stopped using their meals that administration had to called them a couple times to encourage them to use it. The truth is we'd rather eat Louie's juicy ass than whatever the hot spot made from the depths of their uncleaned hell fryers. read more

When you can be jealous of a bunch of college kids because of their on-campus cafeteria, you know you've found something special. My family was here recently on a tour of the campus, as our son is considering transferring to NAU. Part of the tour is lunch at the cafeteria. I didn't expect much, but I was very impressed. They have many different choices, and the day we were there, all of the stations weren't even being used. I can only imagine school-in-session lunch rush options. The big winner, for me was the sandwich station. Made to order sandwiches -- Gluten-free bread was available as well. Furthermore, the lady making my GF sandwich did everything right. She put on new gloves, brought out a special cutting board and knife, made my sandwich, cut it and grilled it. Perfection. Furthermore, for the GF crowd, there's a small fridge with other tasty GF treats. read more

When I went here for years, it wasn't really that great. Sometimes it was good, sometimes it was bad. There were not very many vegetarian options, but it was amazing that they had vegetarian options at all. The problem was they tended to be a bit bland. It is a good place to go and hang out and study and stuff your face, which is good when you can hardly afford food. I stayed there for two meals once. Got some great study time in. read more
