Fish and chips
Missi R.

Nice location on the pier. The exterior is fun and interesting, employees were friendly. It was crowded but service was organized and we didn't wait long for our food. Our group ordered several different items. I ordered fish and chips. It consisted of two pieces of fish, some fries, and a "side" of slaw. The slaw was in a sample-sized cup, more like a garnish than an actual side dish. As for the fish, one piece was very good. The piece on the bottom was overcooked and hard, nearly burned. I went back to the counter to request extra tartar sauce which was handed to me with no additional charge. My friends were happy with their food choices, sandwiches and chowder. We dined inside, and it was startling to see pigeons flying inside to scrounge for food. They walked around on the floor looking for food. Overall, not a bad lunch. A little overpriced but it is a tourist area.

An aesthetic, sea-life-themed restaurant that offers a variety of classic seafood dishes in a cozy setting despite the rain. I ordered the Seafood Combo platter, which featured a variety of finger-food favorites (refer to the photo below), and was pleasantly surprised by how juicy and flavorful the seafood was. Beyond the food itself, I'd also like to give my appreciation to the male cashier who was incredibly helpful and accommodating, making the experience feel very welcoming. The only downside that I personally experienced within my time there is that it's a bit small and open-ended, so pigeons/rain were able to get in easily. However, still grateful for them for having indoor seating for a lot of the other restaurants around unfortunately do not.

Chicken strips with fries

Food was good! Chicken was cooked perfectly. Service was not as fast as we thought it would be, because they called the numbers after us first, so we were quite disappointed ours took longer. Ambiance is perfect, loved the outside seating

Cheesesteak

The Hook can be found in the midst of the super touristy area of Pier 39. It wasn't nearly the worst tourist-trap type restaurant I've ever been to, but it still was overpriced and pretty unsatisfying. We were enjoying ourselves hanging out and taking in the sights at Pier 39 when we decided to take in a quick bite and a drink and came across The Hook. The Philly cheesesteak was just not very good at all. It was very basic and overpriced for what you actually got. Just check out the pics. Very average at best. The beer was just a Bud Light draft, but tasted WAY watered down. There was definitely something off about that beer. It was pricey and unsatisfying, so we decided to cut our losses and save the real grubbing for a better place. 2 stars.

The staff was nice but the food was not good. It was edible but bland. We got a fish and chips, a seafood mix, a bacon hot dog, a Philly cheesesteak, and three drinks for a little over $100. They also don't validate parking from the public parking just fyi. Kind of crappy because parking is $10 per hour unless a restaurant validates it. Idk why they don't validate. The fish was overcooked. The Philly cheesesteak had squeezy nacho cheese on it, the tartar sauce was bland, and the chowder was sweet and gritty.

Although I've tried this spot before and was slightly underwhelmed, this second visit was a pleasant surprise! I've had coworkers recommend this spot for their Philly cheesesteak and their grilled onions and peppers ALONE, so that is exactly what I tried this time around. It's interesting because I've saw photos of this sandwich in previous reviews, and I always thought it looked a bit small for my liking but when I got it I was happy to see that it was a decent size. It has exactly what you'd think: Shredded Steak cooked with Onions and Peppers with the infamous cheese sauce. It was filling and delicious! The savory cheese pairs perfectly with the flavorful steak and sweet grilled onions and peppers. If you go, I genuinely could not recommend the Philly cheesesteak more.

I got the butterfly fish with fries and Tatar sauce. This place is pretty pricy for the amount of food you get. It was really good other than that and theres seating inside and outside. The service was kinda quick but it depends on how many people are there.

Fish and Chips

Never had anything so horrendous. Actually ridiculous. Paid $16 for food that's worth $7 max. Very disappointing. Edit: my friend and I both got a stomachache after, don't recommend

Disappointing Experience with Fried Calamari Unfortunately, my recent visit to this establishment was a letdown. I ordered the fried calamari, which was one of the worst I've ever had. The dish was dry and lacked flavor, which was disappointing. The lackluster food may have contributed to the noticeable absence of customers. Normally I check the review before I try a new place and I failed this time . I was just craving for calamari and stopped here without checking reviews . Rating: 1/5 stars

Great location in the area, love their fish and chips basket. Too bad I'm not staying in SF longer.

Clam chowder in bread bowl
Roxanne P.

While visiting San Francisco with my best friend, we stopped at The Hook on Pier 39, and shared a clam chowder in a bread bowl. It was delicious! The chowder was creamy, flavorful, and packed with tender clams, and the bread bowl was the perfect vessel--crispy on the outside and soft inside. The casual, laid-back vibe of the place was perfect for a quick meal while enjoying the views. It's a bit on the pricier side, but for fresh seafood and the atmosphere, it's totally worth it. If you're in the area, definitely give it a try! Video Review will be posted on Tik Tok @Foxy.appetite and Instagram @Foxyappetite soon

Fisherman Platter
Lareina H.

First time at the pier and wanted to try the sourdough bread bowl clam chowder. Tried it here and it was delicious! My husband had the fisherman platter and I tased the shrimp and it was amazing! The view of the seals outside and the harbor were beautiful. The only thing lacking from making the place perfect was the service. Our server was rude. Like I get it, you have to serve tourists all day long, but throwing down my water saying "here" was unnecessary. Loved the food, but wouldn't come back.

This is a fun seafood shop. The wharf has many but it's the specialty. I had the fried shrimp and it was fun..many shrimp..I asked for a discount and he took off like four dollars..with french fries Here's to pier 39

A typical pier eatery, very quick but crowded. The food was greasy but still yummy.

In addition, each piece was surprisingly FRESH and you can tell. If it was frozen prior, then you sure did a great job making it taste as if you just caught it from the ocean. The fish was falling apart and thick slices/fillets, the shrimp was bouncy and the fries were thicc. The batter was light and there were no air gaps and it was not greasy at all (someone is a pro at the oil temperature I see you) I've never been defeated by a plate of food before but I do dare say it was almost too much for me. Highly recommend (may take a while for your food to arrive but it is worth waiting).

A good friend of mine and decided to spend the $8.50 to cross the bridge and head into San Francisco for fish and chips. I ordered a two piece fish with fries and my buddy did the same. He thought two might be enough and almost bought a three piece. He is glad he didn't. The fish were good sized, had a nice crunch to the batter, tasty batter, tender, flakey and fresh. The fries were the best ever. Nice and crunchy on the outside, soft in the middle and you could taste the potato. Fresh fries fried perfectly. I didn't get around to writing a review after my first visit and I took another friend recently. The fish and chips were just as good the second time around. If you are in the City and want some excellent fish and chips you have to hit The Codmother.

No character development. Here's your chowder. They accommodated all eight of us even though it was busy, and the staff were genuinely friendly and helpful. Getting eight people seated anywhere on vacation feels like coordinating a prisoner exchange, so I appreciated that. Nice view of the water and some outdoor seating, although it had rained that day. Would've loved to sit outside. The chowder was excellent. Could I explain how it differed from every other chowder I've eaten? Absolutely not. I don't have a clam vocabulary. It tasted good and I demolished it. Ate the bread bowl too. Returned essentially nothing to the establishment. Pretty affordable, especially for a touristy area, and easy to walk in, eat, and get back to your trip. Highly recommend if you're nearby and want lunch served before your group can start arguing about the next activity.

You could easily spend a lot more at nearby restaurants without getting a noticeably better meal. The food itself is pretty good, though I wouldn't call it exceptional. The clam chowder is creamy, filling, and especially good served in the sourdough bread bowl. The bread soaks up the chowder nicely while still staying chewy around the edges. The seafood tastes fresh enough, portions are decent, and everything comes out fairly quickly. This is definitely more of a casual tourist stop than a destination restaurant, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It works well when you're walking around Fisherman's Wharf and want something warm and satisfying without sitting down for a long meal or spending a fortune. Overall, Chowder's delivers what you'd expect: good seafood, reasonable portions, and surprisingly fair prices for Pier 39. It probably won't be the most memorable meal you have in San Francisco, but it's convenient, tasty, and worth stopping at if you're already in the area.

I so wanted to come here last August but wasn't able to so I finally made it to have the Clam…read moreChowder, Dungeness Crab and Sourdough Bread!! My bro & SIL were talking it up since they took my visiting cousin here back in June. I saw their photos and was drooling! Yeah, I grew up here but I rarely come to the Fisherman's Wharf. It's nice to play tourist, though and eat their specialties! Axel was our waiter and we sat upstairs where we had a view of the Piers and SF Bay. We came on a Friday but didn't need a reservation as there was plenty of seats. I wanted a bowl of Clam Chowder separate from the Sourdough Bread Bowl so we could share the soup. My bro ordered an Iceberg Wedge Salad and the Dungeness Crab Linguine. My SIL & I shared the roasted whole Dungeness Crab. We had some sourdough slices on the side. The chowder was fine, nothing spectacular. The crab was a little dry and not juicy and I was thinking because it wasn't peak season? My SIL said it was drier than the one she ordered in June. We asked Axel where the crab came from and he said from the SF Bay. My brother said that was odd because it isn't crab season which is typically Nov-Feb. He thinks the crab was either from Canada or somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. The crab vendors we got crabs from in February said it tapers off for them and they may get only 7 crabs in one net. That's as the season tapers off. Their fresh crabs that we bought off the boat were one of the most juiciest, tender crabs we've ever cooked! The Dungeness CrabLinguine was one of the best dishes I've ever had! I'm still thinking about it! The sauce was light, yet flavorful with wine, parsley, lemon, garlic, anchovies, capers, buttery croutons and that briney flavor in the broth. The linguine was fresh and al dente and it all came together with that sauce. I should've ordered that instead! I most certainly will order it the next time I visit as every bite is a flavor bomb! After we ate, we went downstairs to the Sourdough Bakery Cafe. I purchased an apron and a loaf of bread. They had kitchenware, cookbooks, souvenir items, baked Sourdough loaves, coffee drinks, pastries, savory baked items and even a Teddy Bear & Crab-shaped mini loaf. The clerks were Eastern European as I had a hard time understanding the one helping me over the counter. I had to ask him to repeat himself when I asked him if he could slice my loaf of bread. He asked me how many and it took me a few seconds to decipher what he said so I said "Oh, one loaf." He went to the back behind the displayed loaves and gave me this puny loaf! My brother and I looked at each other wondering why he didn't give or offer us a bigger loaf shown on the display case? Were the displays just to entice customers or is it a 2 lb loaf that's available? The option wasn't presented. Again, it must have been his strong accent, lack of enunciation and also lack of customer service. He wasn't friendly nor helpful at all which I find is a poor representation for a high-traffic, touristy destination and iconic establishment. Next time I want a Boudin Sourdough loaf, I'll save my gas, parking fee and go to the Stonestown location. Across the street we met up with my SIL who was buying really good quality $5 ballcaps and $10 sweatshirts with San Francisco logos, Warriors & Giants themes.

Located right in the heart of the action on the piers, this flagship spot is always packed to the brim with crowds and gift shops, but the experience is absolutely worth the hustle and bustle. The food quality remains outstanding despite the heavy tourist volume, highlighted by their world-famous, comforting clam chowder served hot inside a fresh, perfectly tangy sourdough bread bowl with that signature crispy crust and chewy center. Watching the bakers skillfully craft giant loaves into whimsical animal shapes through massive glass windows adds a fun, theatrical energy to your visit. While it is undeniably a tourist-heavy landmark, the combination of rich history, unbeatable waterfront views, and the mouthwatering aroma of baking bread makes it an iconic Bay Area rite of passage. It was a very thin broth which may be some people's preferred chowder but I like my chowder to be thicker, more developed, and hearty. This was thinner, light, and less flavorful. 2. The pasta with the mussles was a lil weird. I don't know i was expecting the dish to be more refined for the price point.
