I had Nick over and the first thing he asked me was "What do you want to do." I told him some ideas I had and he said that is what he would do. He said he would put a tall plant here and some short ones there. Why would I agree to be locked into their high prices when I am obviously doing the designing myself? My sister, a lifelong resident here, says that Schmalz' is the only place in the Valley where the annuals still look good at the end of their season. If it's higher in price, you will still get what you pay for. Schmaltz also has a vigorous Landscaping business. I have only seen one site of theirs, but I have seen many of their trucks at the Garden Center! That site is The Houdini Plaza in downtown Appleton. Nice use of curves, as appears to be the case throughout Appleton. Interesting choices of trees. Good blocks of evergreens for the winter, and trees whose leaves are falling now for the summer. There are Sycamores! They take a long time to mature, and are not often planted. They are placed right next to the annual variegated Spider plants used quite effectively as a massed bedding plant.at this year. My critique? The same as what I heard at the other Garden Center I worked a this year. The price. And what do you get for it? Here, you get clean, you get variety, you get help. Perhaps on the down side is the emphasis on 'product', such as root simulator or fertilizer, by placing it right next to the Easy Elegance roses, which are supposedly known for not needing this much life support. Why not place garden hoses next to half of your stock instead, in order to suggestively sell? Just sayin'. Me, I have walked through this place many times this year, with coffee cup in hand. All other landscapers I called were booked far into the summer, but Vande Hey was able to get the work done in a very short time. The landscaping looks great, and I thought the price fair. (I always keep in mind that if I can't or don't want to do something, I need to pay someone to do it.) Considering the cost of mulch and stone plus labor, I can't find fault with the cost. The crew also didn't bring enough soil to properly fill the planting hole and restore the surrounding area. Instead, they took soil from the surrounding landscape and used mulch to cover the area. No one seemed to take responsibility for seeing the job through to completion, which left us repeatedly following up to get the problems corrected. It wasn't until September 24, more than two months later, that the work was finally completed. Their customer service, communication, and follow-through were terrible, especially for a business that has been around as long as they have. We will definitely not be purchasing another tree from Vande Hey.

Wolfrath came right out and repaired that and also replaced several shrubs that did not survive the next winter and overseeded the new grass which didn't take the first time around. Riverview serves as a means to establish work habits and provide jobs, paid and unpaid, for many in the community. Many hoop houses have been erected, and garden beds are being prepared. Food bearing plants are being added to those already in place outside of the hoop houses. Sound organic principals are being practiced under the able leadership of Oren Jakobson. Certain areas of the grounds are dedicated to park like persuits. The former Country Club is being made into a community center. Volunteer driven. This addresses many needs of the community.
